Short answer: The places to visit in Himachal fall into six circuits. Shimla with Kufri, Chail, Narkanda and Kasauli is the closest to Delhi and Chandigarh. Manali and the Kullu Valley add Solang, Naggar and the Parvati Valley (Kasol, Tosh, Manikaran). Kangra has Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Bir Billing and Palampur. Chamba has Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Chamba town. The quiet valleys are Jibhi, Tirthan and Barot. The high country is Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa and Spiti. For a first trip of 6–7 days, pick one or two neighbouring circuits rather than trying to see the whole state.
Quick answer: places to visit in Himachal at a glance
- First trip, 5–7 days: Shimla + Manali, or Dharamshala + Dalhousie.
- Snow (late Dec–Feb): Kufri and Narkanda near Shimla, Solang near Manali, Dalhousie and Khajjiar. Never fixed; it depends on each winter.
- Quiet and green: Jibhi, Tirthan Valley, Barot, Naggar, Palampur.
- Adventure: Bir Billing for paragliding, Solang for snow sports, Kasol and Tosh for treks.
- High Himalaya: Sangla, Chitkul and Kalpa in Kinnaur; Spiti (Kaza) for 7–9 days.
- Months to avoid: July–August, when monsoon landslides close roads across the state.

Which places should you visit in Himachal? The full list
This table lists every major place, with the region, the best months, approximate road distance from Delhi (Kashmere Gate) and from Chandigarh (Sector 17), and the number of days most people need. Distances come from OpenStreetMap routing and are rounded; hill roads are slow, so allow roughly 25–35 km an hour once you leave the plains. Each place links to our detailed guide.

Two things the table cannot show. First, Himachal is a big state with slow roads: Shimla to Manali alone is a full day, and Spiti is two days from either Shimla or Manali. Second, winter changes everything above about 2,500 m. Jalori Pass, the Kunzum Pass into Spiti, the road beyond Solang and the upper Chitkul road can all shut for days or weeks after snowfall, so a December–February plan should stay on the lower, open routes.
What are the best places to visit around Shimla and Kasauli?
Shimla (about 2,200 m) is the old British summer capital and the easiest hill station to reach from Delhi and Chandigarh. The Ridge, Christ Church, Mall Road, Jakhu temple and the Viceregal Lodge fill a day; see our Shimla tourist places list and things to do in Shimla. Around it:
- Kufri sits around 2,500 m, 16–20 km out on NH-5, and gets snow more often than Shimla; January gives the best odds (Kufri snowfall guide).
- Chail, about 45 km from Shimla at about 2,250 m, has the old Patiala summer palace and a cricket ground at about 2,444 m (Chail guide).
- Narkanda, about 65 km beyond Shimla at around 2,700 m, is the base for Hatu Peak (about 3,400 m), apple orchards and beginner skiing from late December to February (Narkanda guide).
- Kasauli, at about 1,800 m in Solan district, is an 1842 cantonment town roughly 50–60 km from Chandigarh, with Christ Church (1853), Monkey Point and quiet forest walks. Snow is rare and light there (Kasauli snowfall).
What are the best places to visit in Manali and the Kullu Valley?
Manali (about 2,050 m) is the state’s busiest holiday town: Hadimba temple, Old Manali, Vashisht hot springs, Mall Road, and Solang Valley 13 km north-west for the gondola, snow play and paragliding. Plan three to four days; our Manali itinerary, Manali local sightseeing and Manali trip cost pages cover the detail. The road beyond Solang through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu can be restricted after snow; check our Rohtang and road status page.
Down the valley, Kullu town (about 1,280 m) has the Raghunath temple and the week-long Dussehra in October. Naggar has a 15th-century castle and the Roerich art gallery, and makes a calmer base than Manali. Across the river, the Parvati Valley runs up from Bhuntar to Kasol, the Manikaran gurdwara and hot springs, and Tosh at the road’s end. Kheerganga, above Barshaini, is now a day trek only: the Forest Department has banned camping at the top since July 2024. Read our Parvati Valley guide and Kasol trip plan.
Which quiet valleys in Himachal are worth the detour?
If you want rivers and forest without Manali’s traffic, turn off the highway:
- Jibhi (about 1,600 m) in the Banjar valley has wooden cottages, a waterfall walk, the Chehni Kothi tower and the road up to Jalori Pass (3,120 m) and Serolsar Lake. Jalori usually shuts under snow from late December to March (Jibhi, Jalori Pass).
- Tirthan Valley (1,500–1,700 m) is the gateway to the Great Himalayan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014 (Tirthan Valley).
- Barot (about 1,820 m) on the Uhl river in Mandi district has a reservoir, a government trout farm and the old Shanan haulage trolley line (Barot Valley).
- Rewalsar near Mandi is a lake sacred to Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists, and an easy stop on the Chandigarh–Manali road (Rewalsar Lake).
Our offbeat Himachal guide compares these with Shoja, Pangi and the Dhauladhar villages.
What are the best places to visit in Kangra: Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj and Bir?
Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj (roughly 2,000 m) sit under the Dhauladhar range. McLeod Ganj has been the home of the Dalai Lama since 1960; the Tsuglagkhang complex, Bhagsu waterfall, Naddi and the Triund trek are the highlights (Dharamshala tourist places, McLeod Ganj). Lower down the valley:
- Kangra Fort, the old seat of the Katoch rulers of Kangra, about 20 km from Dharamshala (Kangra Fort).
- Palampur (about 1,300 m) for tea gardens, Andretta and the 1204 AD Baijnath temple (Palampur tourist places).
- Bir Billing, about 35 km from Palampur, for tandem paragliding from Billing (about 2,400 m) down to Bir (about 1,400 m). Flying stops every year from 15 July to 15 September (things to do in Bir Billing, paragliding in Bir Billing).
What are the best places to visit in Chamba: Dalhousie and Khajjiar?
Dalhousie (about 1,970 m) is a quiet colonial hill town; Khajjiar, the meadow 24 km away, is the reason most people come. Give the pair three days, with a half day for Dainkund or Chamba (Dalhousie and Khajjiar trip guide, Dalhousie snowfall). Chamba town on the Ravi, at about 1,000 m, has the 10th-century Lakshmi Narayan temples and the Bhuri Singh Museum, and Bharmour beyond it has the Chaurasi temple complex (Chamba tourist places). The nearest railhead is Pathankot, about 80–85 km below Dalhousie.
Which high-altitude places in Himachal should you plan for?
These need more days and the right season.
- Sangla (2,621 m) and Chitkul (3,450 m) in the Baspa valley of Kinnaur, about 225 km and a full day beyond Shimla. Indian travellers need no permit. Snow usually closes the Chitkul road for stretches between January and March (Sangla and Chitkul guide).
- Kalpa (about 2,960 m), above Reckong Peo, for sunrise on the Kinnaur Kailash range (Kalpa, Shimla to Kalpa, Kinnaur valley guide).
- Spiti, with Kaza, Key monastery and Chandratal. Mid-September to mid-October is the best window. Kunzum Pass is shut from mid-October to mid-May, so in winter Spiti is reached only via Shimla and Kinnaur (best time to visit Spiti, Spiti itinerary from Delhi, Spiti trip cost, winter Spiti guide).
How many days do you need, and which route works?
| Days | Route that works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 3–4 days | Shimla + Kufri + Chail or Kasauli; or Dharamshala + McLeod Ganj | Short drives from Chandigarh; no overnight bus needed. |
| 5–6 days | Shimla → Manali (via Kullu) | The classic first trip; see our Shimla Manali itinerary. |
| 6–7 days | Dharamshala → Dalhousie → Khajjiar | Quieter than Manali; Pathankot or Gaggal as the gateway. |
| 7–8 days | Manali + Kasol + Jibhi or Tirthan | Mix of town, river valley and forest. |
| 9–10 days | Shimla → Manali → Dharamshala → Dalhousie | Covers four circuits; long driving days. |
| 7–9 days | Spiti circuit via Shimla, Kinnaur and Manali (June–mid-Oct) | Both roads open only in summer. |
Our 7-day Himachal plan and 10-day plan show these routes day by day, and Himachal trip cost breaks down the budget.
When is the best time to visit Himachal’s tourist places?
| Season | Months | Best places | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring and early summer | March–June | Everywhere below 3,000 m; Kinnaur from mid-April; Spiti from June | Crowds in Shimla and Manali in May–June |
| Monsoon | July–August (to mid-September) | Spiti and Kinnaur interiors are drier, but the approach roads are not | Landslides statewide; no paragliding in Bir 15 Jul–15 Sep |
| Autumn | Mid-September–November | All circuits; Spiti until mid-October | Cold nights above 2,500 m from November |
| Winter | December–February | Snow at Kufri, Narkanda, Solang, Dalhousie; Shimla and Dharamshala stay open | Passes shut; chains or 4×4 needed after snow |

What this means for your trip
- Pick circuits, not a checklist. Two neighbouring circuits in a week is comfortable; three is a driving holiday.
- Start from the right city. Chandigarh is the best gateway for Shimla, Kasauli and Manali; Pathankot and Gaggal (Kangra airport) for Dharamshala and Dalhousie.
- Check entry fees and permits. Out-of-state vehicles pay a Himachal entry fee, and Rohtang needs a permit; see Himachal entry tax and permits 2026.
- Keep a buffer day in winter for road closures after snow.
- Taste the food: our Himachali food guide explains dham, siddu and madra.
Prefer a ready plan? Our 9-day Himachal tour from Delhi starts from ₹18,999 per person (twin sharing, off-season), and the Dharamshala Dalhousie tour from Delhi (4N/5D) from ₹16,499. Every route is on our Himachal tour packages page.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the most beautiful place to visit in Himachal?
It depends on what you want. For snow peaks close to a town, Manali and Solang; for a meadow, Khajjiar; for a high village, Chitkul (3,450 m) in Kinnaur; for a high-desert landscape, Spiti. For a first trip, Shimla and Manali are the easiest to combine.
Which places in Himachal are best for a 5-day trip?
Shimla and Manali via Kullu, or Dharamshala and Dalhousie. Both fit five or six days from Chandigarh without overnight drives. Avoid adding Spiti or Kinnaur to a five-day plan; each needs a week on its own.
Which places in Himachal have snow in December and January?
Kufri and Narkanda near Shimla, Solang above Manali, and Dalhousie and Khajjiar usually get snow between late December and February, with January the most likely month. Snowfall is never fixed; it depends on western disturbances each winter.
Which is better for a first visit, Shimla or Manali?
Shimla is closer (about 125 km from Chandigarh) and better for a short trip or older travellers. Manali (about 270 km from Chandigarh) has bigger mountains, snow activities at Solang and more to do in three to four days. Many people do both in five or six days.
What is the cheapest way to see Himachal?
Travel off-season (November to mid-December or March), take an overnight HRTC Volvo from Delhi, and stay in one or two bases rather than moving every night. Our Himachal trip cost guide shows realistic budgets.
Do I need a permit to visit places in Himachal?
Indian travellers need no permit for Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Sangla, Chitkul or Kalpa. Rohtang Pass needs a permit, and out-of-state vehicles pay a Himachal entry fee. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for parts of Kinnaur and Spiti near the border.
How many days are enough to see Himachal?
Seven to ten days covers two to four circuits, such as Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala. Seeing the whole state, including Kinnaur and Spiti, needs three weeks or more.
