Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj: where are the tourist places?

“Dharamshala” covers two towns about 10 km apart by road. Lower Dharamshala, at about 1,450 m, is the district town with Kotwali Bazaar, the cricket stadium and government offices. McLeod Ganj, higher up at about 2,000 m, is the Tibetan quarter where most visitors stay. The Dharamshala Skyway ropeway links the two, and Gaggal (Kangra) airport is about 13–14 km from lower Dharamshala.

If you want cafes, monasteries and walks, stay in McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot. If you are travelling with parents or want easy access to the valley temples and the airport, lower Dharamshala is calmer and flatter.

What are the main tourist places in Dharamshala?

In McLeod Ganj: the Dalai Lama temple (Tsuglagkhang), Bhagsunag temple and waterfall, Dharamkot, Naddi, Dal Lake, St John in the Wilderness and the Tibet Museum. In lower Dharamshala: the HPCA stadium, War Memorial, Kangra Art Museum and Norbulingka. Nearby: Chamunda Devi, Kangra Fort and Masroor temples.

Is Dharamshala the same as McLeod Ganj?

No. Lower Dharamshala, at about 1,450 m, is the district town with the stadium and Kotwali Bazaar. McLeod Ganj, about 10 km up by road at around 2,000 m, is the Tibetan quarter with the Dalai Lama temple. Both are usually covered on one trip.

How many days are enough for Dharamshala?

Three days cover McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu, Naddi, Norbulingka, Chamunda Devi and the stadium. Add a fourth day for Kangra Fort and Masroor or Palampur and Bir, and two more if you want to include Dalhousie and Khajjiar.

How far is Chamunda Devi temple from Dharamshala?

About 15 km on the Palampur road, around 30–40 minutes by car. Darshan runs about 5 am to 10 pm in summer and 6 am to 9 pm in winter. It combines well with Norbulingka and Palampur on the same day.

Is there an entry fee for the Dalai Lama temple?

No. Entry to the Tsuglagkhang complex in McLeod Ganj is free, with a bag check at the gate. The Dalai Lama’s residence is not open to visitors, and public teachings are announced only on the official schedule at dalailama.com.

Can you do Triund as a day trip from Dharamshala?

Yes, if you are fit. It is about 9 km one way from McLeod Ganj via Gallu, 4–5 hours up and about 3 hours down, to a meadow at around 2,850 m. A Forest Department fee of ₹100 per person per day is collected at Gallu, with a daily cap.

What is the best time to visit Dharamshala?

March to mid-June and mid-September to November, when days are clear and the Dhauladhar views are sharp. December to February is cold but often clear, with snow on the ridge. July and August bring some of the heaviest rain in India.
