Short answer: Dalhousie and Khajjiar are a pair: Dalhousie is the hill town (about 1,970 m) and Khajjiar is the meadow 24 km and roughly an hour away. Give them 3 days — two nights in Dalhousie, one full day at Khajjiar and Kalatop, and a half day for Dainkund or Chamba. The nearest railhead is Pathankot, about 85 km below. Go March–June or October–November for clear weather, December–February for snow.
Quick answer (checked 22 October 2026)
- Distances: Delhi → Dalhousie about 555 km; Pathankot → Dalhousie about 85 km; Dalhousie → Khajjiar about 24 km; Dalhousie → Chamba about 45 km.
- How many days: 2 nights is the minimum, 3 nights lets you add Chamba or Dainkund without rushing.
- Stay where: Dalhousie for restaurants and walks; one night at Khajjiar only if you want the meadow empty at dawn.
- Best time: March–June and October–November. Snow is likeliest late December to February.
- Combine with: Dharamshala–McLeod Ganj (4–5 hours away) and, from Punjab, Amritsar.

Where are Dalhousie and Khajjiar, and how do they fit together?
Both sit in Chamba district, in the far west of Himachal Pradesh, on ridges facing the Dhauladhar range. Dalhousie, named after the British governor-general Lord Dalhousie, is a former colonial hill station spread over five hills at about 1,970 m. It has the hotels, the churches, Gandhi Chowk and the long, level walks under deodar and pine.
Khajjiar is not a town. It is a saucer-shaped meadow at about 1,920–2,000 m with a small lake, ringed by deodar forest, 24 km from Dalhousie (Chamba district information on Vikaspedia gives 24 km; allow about an hour on the hill road). On 7 July 1992 a Swiss diplomat, Willy P. Blazer, called it the “Mini Switzerland of India” and put up a signpost showing Bern at 6,194 km — the sign is still the most photographed spot in the meadow. The meadow sits inside the Kalatop–Khajjiar wildlife sanctuary.
Most people treat Khajjiar as a day trip from Dalhousie, and that is the right call for a first visit. The road between them runs through Kalatop forest, so a single day covers both.
How do you reach Dalhousie and Khajjiar?
There is no railway or large airport in the hills here. Every route ends with a drive up from Pathankot, in Punjab, or across from Kangra.
| From | How | Road distance / time to Dalhousie | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi | Car with driver, all the way | About 555 km, a long day (11–12 hours with stops) | Families, groups with luggage |
| Delhi | Overnight train to Pathankot, then car | About 85 km from Pathankot, 2.5–3 hours | Saving a day; most popular with our guests |
| Amritsar | Car via Pathankot | Roughly 200 km, 5–6 hours | Golden Temple + hills trips |
| Kangra (Gaggal) airport | Flight, then car | Khajjiar is about 130 km from Gaggal | Combining with Dharamshala |
| Dharamshala | Car | 4–5 hours | The classic Dharamshala–Dalhousie circuit |
The overnight train is the smart option from Delhi. The 14035 Dhauladhar Express, for example, leaves Delhi Sarai Rohilla at 23:20 and reaches Pathankot at 08:20 on its running days (ixigo schedule, checked 22 October 2026 — it does not run daily, so confirm on the IRCTC or NTES app before booking). Pathankot has two stations, Pathankot Junction and Pathankot Cantt (Chakki Bank); your driver can meet you at either. If you are flying into Kangra or starting in Dharamshala, our Pathankot–Dharamshala taxi page explains how the circuit is usually driven with a Dalhousie add-on.
Driving yourself from the plains is possible but tiring: the last 2–3 hours are narrow hill roads with sharp bends, and in winter the shaded stretches near Banikhet and on the Khajjiar road ice over in the mornings.
How many days do you need for Dalhousie and Khajjiar?
Three days (two or three nights) is the right length. Two days works if you are passing through on a longer Himachal circuit. Anything beyond four nights is for people who want to read, walk and do nothing — which Dalhousie is very good at.
A 3-day plan that works most of the year
- Day 1 — arrive and walk the town. Reach from Pathankot by lunch. Afternoon on the Garam Sadak and Thandi Sadak loop between Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, St John’s Church at Gandhi Chowk, and sunset from the Mall. Evening in a café near Gandhi Chowk.
- Day 2 — Kalatop and Khajjiar. Leave by 8:30 am. Stop at Kalatop, roughly midway, for a short forest walk — the name means “black cap”, after the dark forest on the hilltop, and the sanctuary is home to pheasants, monal, leopards and black bears. Reach Khajjiar mid-morning, walk the meadow and the lake, visit the 12th-century Khajji Nag temple (attributed to Raja Prithviraj Singh I of Chamba), and add a horse ride, zorbing or a tandem paragliding flight. Back in Dalhousie by late afternoon.
- Day 3 — Dainkund or Chamba, then leave. Either drive up towards Dainkund, at about 2,755 m the highest point around Dalhousie, and walk the last stretch to the Pholani Devi temple (a shrine with a trident and no idol), or go down to Chamba town for the 10th-century Lakshmi Narayan temple group and the Bhuri Singh Museum. Afternoon drive to Pathankot for the night train or onward.
If you only have two days, fold Khajjiar and Kalatop into the afternoon of Day 1 and keep Day 2 for Dainkund on the way out.
What is there to do in Khajjiar beyond the meadow?
Khajjiar is small. Its pleasure is the setting: a flat green bowl, deodars all round, and on a clear day the snow line behind the trees. In practice a visit includes:
- The meadow walk and the lake. The lake is small and partly covered by a spongy floating weed. Walk the full circuit; the far side is much quieter than the road-side edge.
- Khajji Nag temple, with its golden-coloured dome and wood carving, at the edge of the meadow.
- Horse rides and zorbing on the meadow, run by local operators. Agree the price and the route before you get on.
- Paragliding. Licensed tandem pilots fly between the district’s marked launch sites at Dadota and Lahara. Flights stop every monsoon and in 2026 restarted on 16 September; passengers must be at least 12 years old and 30 kg. Details on our paragliding in Khajjiar page.
- The Swiss signpost from 1992, if only for the photo.
An honest note: on summer weekends and in the Christmas–New Year week, the road-side end of the meadow is crowded with vendors and ponies. Arrive before 10 am or stay the night at Khajjiar to see it quiet.
When is the best time to visit Dalhousie and Khajjiar?
There is no bad month, but each season is a different trip. Dalhousie typically records 20–30 snowy days a year, almost all between late December and February.
| Months | What it is like | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| March–April | Cool, clearing skies, snow lingering on Dainkund early in March | Couples, quiet trips |
| May–June | Peak season; pleasant days, the meadow at its greenest, busiest weekends | Families escaping the plains’ heat; book early |
| July–September | Monsoon: heavy rain, mist, landslide risk on the approach roads; no paragliding until mid-September | Only flexible travellers; build in a spare day |
| October–November | Our favourite: dry, clear Dhauladhar views, cold evenings, few crowds, off-season prices | Photographers, couples, seniors |
| December–February | Cold, sub-zero nights; snow likeliest from late December; Dainkund and Khajjiar roads can shut for a day after heavy snow | Snow seekers who can flex their dates |
Recent winters show the pattern. Over the 2024–25 New Year, snow had already fallen on the hills and government hotels in Chamba, Dalhousie and Khajjiar were fully booked, with private hotels at up to 90% occupancy (The Tribune, 1 January 2025). On 1 January 2026, light snow fell on Dalhousie itself, and visitors went up to Dainkund and Lakkar Mandi to see it (ANI, 1 January 2026) — at a time when Manali had stayed largely dry through December. That makes Dalhousie a useful snow alternative, not a guarantee. Our Himachal snowfall guide for winter 2026-27 compares the odds across the state month by month.
Is it worth adding Chamba?
Yes, if you have a third day and like history more than viewpoints. Chamba town is about 45 km from Dalhousie and lower and warmer. The Lakshmi Narayan temple group, built in the shikhara style and traditionally dated to Raja Sahil Varman in the 10th century, stands in the old town. The Bhuri Singh Museum, opened on 14 September 1908, holds Chamba miniature paintings and the embroidered Chamba rumals; it is open 10 am to 5 pm and closed on Mondays and gazetted holidays. The big open ground, the Chaugan, hosts the Minjar fair each summer.
The scenic way is Dalhousie → Kalatop → Khajjiar → Chamba, then back by the lower Banikhet road, making a loop in one long day.
Dalhousie or Dharamshala — or both?
They suit different moods. Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are about Tibetan culture, cafés, monasteries and short treks; Dalhousie is about quiet, colonial walks, Khajjiar and colder, snowier winters. Most of our guests from Delhi and Punjab do both in five days, because the drive between them is only 4–5 hours. Our Dharamshala vs Dalhousie comparison goes through it in detail.
What does a Dalhousie–Khajjiar trip cost?
We don’t quote invented averages; here are the starting prices on our own live package pages as of 22 October 2026 (per person, twin sharing, off-season rate, ground package without train or flight):
- Dharamshala and Dalhousie from Pathankot, 4 nights / 5 days — from ₹14,500.
- Dharamshala Dalhousie tour from Delhi, 4 nights / 5 days — from ₹16,499.
Prices rise in the May–June peak and over Christmas–New Year. If you are coming from Amritsar, our Amritsar taxi service lists a two-day Dalhousie and Khajjiar trip with one night.
Practical tips from our drivers
- Start early for Khajjiar. Leaving Dalhousie at 8–8:30 am beats the tourist buses and gives you the calmest air if you plan to fly.
- Carry a layer in every season. Even in June, evenings at 1,970 m need a fleece; in December–February you need a proper down jacket, gloves and shoes with grip.
- Cash helps. Card and UPI work in Dalhousie, but signal and payments at Khajjiar’s stalls and pony stands can be patchy.
- After snowfall, wait a day. The Khajjiar and Dainkund roads are cleared, but not instantly. A local driver will know when they are safe.
- Book long weekends early. Dalhousie has far fewer rooms than Shimla or Manali, so Christmas, New Year and the May–June school holidays fill up first.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Khajjiar from Dalhousie?
About 24 km by road, which takes roughly an hour each way on a narrow hill road through Kalatop forest. Most visitors do Khajjiar as a half-day or full-day trip from Dalhousie, stopping at Kalatop on the way. Staying a night at Khajjiar is worth it only if you want the meadow empty at sunrise.
Is 2 days enough for Dalhousie and Khajjiar?
Two days covers the essentials — the Dalhousie walks on day one and Kalatop and Khajjiar on day two — but it is rushed once you add the 2.5–3 hour drive from Pathankot each way. Three days lets you add Dainkund or Chamba and leaves room for weather, which matters in winter and the monsoon.
Does it snow in Dalhousie and Khajjiar?
Yes. Dalhousie typically sees 20–30 snowy days a year, mostly from late December to February, and Khajjiar and Dainkund get snow more reliably than the town. Light snow fell on Dalhousie on 1 January 2026. Snow can never be promised for fixed dates, so keep a spare day in a winter trip.
What is the nearest railway station to Dalhousie?
Pathankot, about 85 km away, with two stations: Pathankot Junction and Pathankot Cantt (Chakki Bank). Overnight trains from Delhi reach Pathankot in the morning, and the drive up to Dalhousie takes 2.5–3 hours. Check the days of operation on IRCTC or NTES, as several trains on this route do not run daily.
Why is Khajjiar called Mini Switzerland?
On 7 July 1992 a Swiss diplomat, Willy P. Blazer, gave Khajjiar the title “Mini Switzerland of India” because of its meadow, lake and forest, and set up a signpost showing the distance to Bern as 6,194 km. A stone from Khajjiar was taken to Switzerland. The sign still stands at the meadow.
Can we do Dalhousie and Dharamshala in one trip?
Yes, it is the most popular way to see this side of Himachal. The drive between the two is about 4–5 hours, and five days covers both comfortably: two nights in Dharamshala–McLeod Ganj, two in Dalhousie with a Khajjiar day, plus travel from Pathankot or Kangra airport.
