Short answer: Dalhousie snowfall usually comes between late December and mid-February, with January the most reliable month for snow on the ground in town. Dalhousie itself sits at about 1,970 m, so town snow is not guaranteed every winter, but the higher points nearby – Lakkar Mandi, Kalatop and Dainkund (about 2,755 m) – get snow in almost every cold spell. Book January, base in Dalhousie, and drive up to the snow line when the road is open.
Quick answer
- Best month for snow: January, then early February. Late December is possible but hit-and-miss.
- Where the snow is surest: Dainkund, Kalatop and Lakkar Mandi on the Dalhousie–Khajjiar road, a few hundred metres above town.
- Khajjiar in snow: yes, in a good spell – but the 24 km road through Lakkar Mandi is often the first one to shut.
- Recent record: more than 60 cm in town and over 100 cm from Kalatop to Dainkund in January 2022 (The Tribune); only flakes in town in December 2024 after a four-month dry spell.
- How many days: 3 nights in Dalhousie gives you two chances at a snow day; 4–5 nights with Dharamshala is the usual trip.

When does it snow in Dalhousie?
Dalhousie’s snow season runs from late December to February, with the odd spell in early March. The pattern is driven by western disturbances – weather systems from the west that cross Himachal a few times each winter and bring two or three days of cloud, rain lower down and snow higher up (which is why Kasauli snowfall, at about 1,800 m, is so rare). Between those spells the sky is clear, the days are bright and cold, and old snow melts off south-facing slopes.
The town is at roughly 1,970 m, spread over five hills (Kathlog, Potreyn, Tehra, Bakrota and Balun). That height puts it right on the line where a spell can fall as snow or as cold rain. Bakrota and Ahla, the upper parts of town, usually hold snow longer than the Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk area. Wikipedia’s summary of Dalhousie’s climate puts the number of snowy days at roughly 20–30 a year – enough that a week in January has a fair chance, not enough to promise one.
Two recent winters show the range. In January 2022 a heavy spell left more than 60 cm in town, Bakrota and Ahla, and more than 100 cm from Kalatop to Dainkund, and blocked the Dalhousie–Banikhet and Khajjiar roads (The Tribune, 24 January 2022). In December 2024, by contrast, a four-month dry spell ended with snow at Dainkund and Kalatop while Dalhousie town “also saw snowflakes” (The Tribune, 24 December 2024).
Which month is best to see snow in Dalhousie?
January. It is the coldest month, the spells are most frequent, and fresh snow lasts longest in the shade of the deodar and oak forest. Early February is a close second and is often quieter. Late December gives you Christmas and New Year atmosphere but snow only some years – in 2022 the season’s first snowfall in town came on 30 December, just as the New Year crowd arrived (ETV Bharat, 30 December 2022).
| Month | Snow in Dalhousie town | Snow at Dainkund / Kalatop | What a recent year looked like |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | Rare | Occasional dusting | Clear, cold nights; best visibility of the Pir Panjal |
| December | Possible, mostly late in the month | Likely in any spell | First town snow 30 Dec 2022; only flakes in town 23 Dec 2024 |
| January | Best chance | Deep snow, road often shut | 60+ cm in town, 100+ cm Kalatop–Dainkund, Jan 2022 |
| February | Good chance, melting faster | Likely | 20 Feb 2025: Dainkund 7–8 in, Lakkar Mandi 5–6 in, Ahla 3 in |
| March | Occasional late spell | Patches remain | Snow melting off; spring walks open up |

Where do you find snow around Dalhousie?
If the town is green when you arrive, the snow is rarely more than 30–45 minutes away. The road to Khajjiar climbs through the forest above town, and that is where you go looking.
Lakkar Mandi
A small settlement on the Dalhousie–Khajjiar road where the forest opens out. It catches snow in most spells – 5–6 inches on 20 February 2025, when the town got far less (The Tribune). It is also where traffic stops first when the road ices.
Kalatop
The Kalatop forest, part of the Kalatop–Khajjiar wildlife sanctuary, sits at about 2,400 m. Deodar and blue pine hold the snow for days after a spell, which makes it the most photogenic snow walk near Dalhousie.
Dainkund peak
The highest point near Dalhousie at about 2,755 m, with the small Pholani Devi temple on top and views to the Pir Panjal and the Chamba valley. It gets the most snow of anywhere you can reasonably reach – over 100 cm in the January 2022 spell. In deep snow the last stretch is a walk, not a drive, and an Air Force station on the ridge means some areas are off-limits; follow the signs.
Khajjiar
Khajjiar’s meadow at about 1,920 m turns white in a good spell, and the lake and deodar ring look completely different from the summer postcard. Our Dalhousie and Khajjiar trip guide covers the route, the Khajji Nag temple and how many days to give it.
Is the Dalhousie–Khajjiar road open in snow?
Often not on the day after a heavy fall. The 24 km road runs through Lakkar Mandi and below Kalatop, and it is usually one of the first local roads to close. On 20 February 2025 traffic “came to a standstill on the Dalhousie-Khajjiar road” (The Tribune, 21 Feb 2025), and in January 2022 the Banikhet and Khajjiar roads were both hit. The PWD Dalhousie division clears it with earth movers, and in a normal spell it reopens within a day or two once the sun comes out.
Snow can surprise even outside winter: PTI reported snow disrupting traffic on the Dalhousie–Lakkar Mandi–Khajjiar route for almost two hours on 22 June 2026. That is the exception, but it shows how fast this stretch reacts to weather.
What this means for planning:
- Do not fix Khajjiar for the morning after a snow forecast. Keep it as a floating day.
- Black ice forms on shaded bends early in the morning. Start after 10 am when the sun has worked on the road.
- Small cars struggle on packed snow. An SUV with a driver who carries chains is worth the extra cost in January.
- The Pathankot side, through Banikhet, is lower and usually cleared first – but in the biggest spells even the Dalhousie–Banikhet road was disrupted (Tribune, Jan 2022).
How do you reach Dalhousie in winter?
Pathankot is the railhead, about 85 km away, and the drive takes roughly 2.5–3 hours. Delhi is about 555 km by road. Gaggal airport near Dharamshala is about 130 km away. Most snow trips pair Dalhousie with Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, which sit lower and stay accessible when Dalhousie’s upper roads close. Our Pathankot to Dharamshala taxi page covers station pickups on that side; for the Kangra half of the trip in winter, see Dharamshala in December.
What does a Dalhousie snow trip cost?
These are the live starting prices on our Dalhousie trips as of 31 October 2026, per person on a twin-sharing basis:
| Trip | Starts from | Duration | Price from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Splendid Dharamshala–Dalhousie | Pathankot | 5 days | ₹14,500 |
| Dharamshala–Dalhousie from Delhi | Delhi | 4N/5D | ₹16,499 |
| Supreme Dharamshala–Dalhousie | Chandigarh | 5N/6D | ₹19,499 |
Christmas–New Year week (Christmas falls on Friday 25 December 2026, New Year on Friday 1 January 2027) and the Republic Day weekend (Tuesday 26 January 2027) fill first and cost more; mid-January weekdays are the best value for a snow trip. All our Dalhousie options are on the Dalhousie tour packages page.
What should you pack for snow in Dalhousie?
- Waterproof boots with grip – the Mall Road and the Lakkar Mandi stretch get slippery fast. Gumboots are hired at snow points, but your own are better.
- Layers, not one big jacket – thermal inner, fleece, down or padded jacket. Afternoons in the sun can feel mild; evenings drop well below freezing.
- Gloves, woollen cap, sunglasses – glare off fresh snow is strong at Dainkund.
- Power bank and cash – heavy spells have cut power in Chamba district (The Tribune, Feb 2025), and ATMs in town can run dry on a long weekend.
- Some medicine for cold and headache, and moisturiser – the air is very dry.
A 3-day Dalhousie snow plan
Day 1: Pathankot to Dalhousie by afternoon. Walk Gandhi Chowk to Subhash Chowk on the Mall, St John’s Church, and Bakrota hill if it has snow. Check the evening forecast.
Day 2 (the snow day): If the road is open, Lakkar Mandi – Kalatop forest walk – Dainkund, back by 3 pm. If it is shut, Panchpula and the town’s upper hills instead.
Day 3: Khajjiar by late morning once the road has thawed, then on to Chamba or down to Dharamshala. If you want the meadow from the air in spring or autumn, the Khajjiar paragliding guide explains the season – winter is mostly weather days.

Frequently asked questions
Does it snow in Dalhousie every year?
The higher points around Dalhousie – Dainkund, Kalatop and Lakkar Mandi – get snow every winter. The town itself, at about 1,970 m, usually does too, but not always in quantity. In December 2024 a long dry spell meant only snowflakes in town while Dainkund and Kalatop got proper snow. January gives the best odds of snow underfoot.
Which is better for snow, Dalhousie or Dharamshala?
Dalhousie. It is several hundred metres higher than lower Dharamshala and gets snow in town far more often. Dharamshala usually sees snow on the Dhauladhar peaks and occasionally at McLeod Ganj and Naddi. Combining both, five days in all, gives you the snow of Dalhousie and the easier access of Dharamshala.
Can I visit Khajjiar after snowfall?
Yes, once the road is cleared. The Dalhousie–Khajjiar road through Lakkar Mandi is often closed the day after a heavy fall and reopens within a day or two as PWD clears it. Plan Khajjiar as a flexible day, start after 10 am to avoid black ice, and use an SUV with chains in January.
Is Dalhousie good for a Christmas and New Year trip?
Yes for the atmosphere, less certain for snow. Late December snow happens some years – the 2022 season’s first town snowfall came on 30 December – but not every year. Christmas (Friday 25 December 2026) and New Year (Friday 1 January 2027) are long weekends, so book hotels and cars early.
How cold is Dalhousie in January?
Expect sunny days around single digits Celsius and nights below freezing, colder after a snow spell and colder still at Khajjiar and Dainkund. Water pipes freeze in some hotels in deep spells. Pack thermals, a down or padded jacket, gloves and waterproof boots, and choose a hotel with room heating.
How many days are enough for a Dalhousie snow trip?
Three nights in Dalhousie gives you two possible snow days, which matters because the upper road can be shut for a day after a heavy fall. Add two nights in Dharamshala for a five-day trip from Pathankot, or six days from Chandigarh or Delhi.
