Choosing your Thailand — this is the whole decision

Thailand is not one destination. The mistake most first-time visitors make is trying to see all of it in six days and spending half the holiday in airports. Bangkok and Pattaya sit together in the centre. Phuket and Krabi are the Andaman coast in the south. Koh Samui is on the opposite side of the peninsula with a different weather pattern entirely. Chiang Mai is mountains and temples in the far north. Pick two regions at most for a week. We would rather talk you out of a fourth city than sell you a schedule you will resent by day four.

On entry requirements: Thailand currently allows visa-exempt entry for Indian passport holders for short tourist stays. This arrangement has been introduced and extended in stages and the permitted duration has changed over time. Immigration may also ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. We confirm the exact position for your travel dates before you book flights.

The regions, honestly compared

Bangkok

The Grand Palace, Wat Pho’s reclining Buddha, the floating markets and some of the best street food anywhere. Also serious traffic and serious heat. Two to three nights is right for most people — long enough to see the temples and shop at Chatuchak, short enough that the city does not wear you down.

Pattaya

Two hours from Bangkok by road, which is its main advantage. Coral Island day trips, Nong Nooch gardens, the Sanctuary of Truth. The beach is not Thailand’s best and parts of the nightlife are not family territory, so we place families in the quieter northern end or Jomtien. Good for a short add-on; not worth a long stay.

Phuket

The biggest island with the most infrastructure — and the most crowds. Base for Phi Phi and James Bond Island day trips. Patong is busy and loud; Kata, Karon and Bang Tao are calmer and better for families. Convenient rather than beautiful, but the day trips from here are genuinely spectacular.

Krabi

Limestone cliffs rising out of the sea, Railay beach reachable only by boat, and the four-island tour. Quieter and prettier than Phuket, with a slower pace. Our usual recommendation for couples and for anyone who found Phuket disappointing on a previous trip.

Chiang Mai and the north

Mountain temples, ethical elephant sanctuaries, night bazaars and cooler air. Completely different in character from the beaches, and the best choice if temples and culture interest you more than sand. Add three days, or build a whole trip around it.

A sample 6-day itinerary

Bangkok plus Krabi, which we think is the best-balanced first trip. Swap Krabi for Phuket if you want more nightlife and easier connections.

Day 1 — Arrive BangkokTransfer to hotel, evening at Asiatique riverfront or a Chao Phraya dinner cruise.
Day 2 — Bangkok temples and cityGrand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun in the morning, then Chatuchak weekend market or MBK and Siam for shopping.
Day 3 — Floating market, fly to KrabiDamnoen Saduak or Amphawa floating market, then the short flight south. Evening at Ao Nang.
Day 4 — Four Islands tourLongtail boat to Phra Nang cave beach, Chicken Island, Tup and Poda, with snorkelling and lunch on the boat.
Day 5 — Railay or Hong IslandsRailay for the cliffs and viewpoint climb, or the Hong Islands lagoon if you prefer a quieter boat day. Afternoon free.
Day 6 — DepartureMorning at leisure, transfer to Krabi airport for your onward flight.

When to go

November–February · Best overallCool dry season. Comfortable temperatures, calm seas and reliable boat trips. Peak rates, especially over Christmas and New Year.
March–May · Hot seasonGenuinely hot, often above 35C. Good rates and fewer crowds. Songkran in April is a spectacular experience if you do not mind getting soaked.
June–October · Green seasonRain in short afternoon bursts rather than all day, and the lowest prices of the year. Andaman boat trips can be cancelled in rough weather.
Note on the two coastsKoh Samui and the Gulf side run on an opposite pattern to Phuket and Krabi. If your dates are fixed, we pick the coast that suits them.

Common questions about Thailand

Do Indians need a visa for Thailand?

Thailand currently offers visa-exempt entry to Indian passport holders for short tourist stays. The scheme and its permitted duration have changed more than once, and immigration can ask for proof of onward travel, accommodation and funds. We confirm the current position for your dates as part of booking.

Is Thailand suitable for a family trip with children and parents?

Yes, with the right itinerary. We keep families away from the Walking Street end of Pattaya and the Patong strip in Phuket, choose hotels with pools, and build in rest afternoons. Tell us who is travelling and the plan changes accordingly.

Bangkok and Pattaya, or Bangkok and Phuket?

Pattaya is cheaper and only a road transfer away, so it suits shorter and tighter-budget trips. Phuket and Krabi need an internal flight but the beaches and island trips are in a different class. On five days or fewer, Pattaya. On six or more, fly south.

How much money should I carry?

Thailand is card-friendly in hotels and malls but cash is king for street food, markets, tuk-tuks and boat operators. We give you a realistic daily spend estimate for your itinerary and advise on where to exchange.

Is vegetarian food easy?

Easier than its reputation suggests. Thai cooking uses fish sauce widely, so pure vegetarian needs asking for specifically, but Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya all have proper Indian restaurants. Jain meals need advance arrangement, which we handle.

Are the island day trips safe?

Generally yes with licensed operators, and we only book those. Trips are occasionally cancelled for rough seas, particularly in green season, which is a safety call and not something to argue with. We build enough flexibility to reschedule.
