Malaysia rarely tops anyone’s wishlist, and that is precisely why it delivers. You get skyscrapers and rainforest, colonial port towns and island beaches, all at prices well below Thailand and a fraction of Singapore. For Indian travellers there is a particular advantage: Malaysia has a substantial Indian-origin population, so Tamil is widely spoken in parts of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves is one of the most important Hindu sites outside India, and finding good vegetarian food is never a problem. It is comfortable in a way that surprises people.
Where to go
Kuala Lumpur
The Petronas Twin Towers, the KL Tower, Merdeka Square and the limestone caves and 272 coloured steps at Batu Caves. Excellent shopping at Bukit Bintang and Pavilion, and street food at Jalan Alor. Two to three nights covers it well. KL is easy to navigate and considerably cheaper than Singapore for the same kind of city holiday.
Genting Highlands
An hour from Kuala Lumpur and around 1,800 metres up, reached by one of the world’s longest cable cars. Cool air, a theme park, and a casino complex. Families like it for the temperature change and the rides; it is an easy overnight or even a day trip from KL.
Langkawi
An archipelago in the Andaman Sea with good beaches, the SkyBridge across a mountain gorge, island-hopping trips and duty-free shopping. This is where Malaysia competes directly with Thailand’s islands, usually at a lower price. Two to three nights.
Penang
George Town’s colonial shophouses and street art are UNESCO-listed, and the food is widely considered the best in Malaysia. A strong Indian quarter too. The most interesting stop for travellers who prefer culture and eating to beaches and malls.

Combining Malaysia with Singapore
These two pair naturally and travellers who combine them get noticeably better value than those who do either alone. Singapore is polished and expensive; Malaysia is relaxed and affordable. A week split four nights Kuala Lumpur and three nights Singapore — or the reverse — covers two countries, two very different atmospheres, and brings the average daily cost down. The two are connected by short flights and by road across the causeway. Note that Singapore requires a visa for Indians while Malaysia currently does not, so plan the Singapore paperwork early.
