How far is Kalpa from Shimla and how long does it take?
Wikipedia puts Kalpa at 265 km beyond Shimla on NH-5; the driving guides we checked measure the Powari turn-off at about 246 km and Kalpa itself at about 250 km (Discover with Dheeraj, updated 20 Oct 2026). The difference is where in Shimla you start and whether you count the climb from Reckong Peo. Treat it as 250–265 km.
The time is what matters. The first 130 km to Rampur are a decent two-lane hill highway and take 4–4.5 hours including the descent to the Sutlej. The next 120 km are cut into cliffs, pass through two hydro-project zones, and include the landslide belt between Jeori and Wangtu; they take as long again. Our drivers quote 7–8 hours of driving and we tell guests to plan on 9–10 hours with a lunch halt and photo stops.
That is why most of our itineraries do not do Shimla to Kalpa in one go. A night at Sarahan (the Bhimakali temple) or at Sangla (the Baspa valley) turns a long day into two short ones and lets you see Kinnaur rather than just drive through it. If you are coming all the way from the plains, our Delhi to Kalpa guide covers the two-day version from the capital.
What is the route from Shimla to Kalpa, stop by stop?
| Place | Approx. km from Shimla | Running time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kufri / Fagu / Theog | 15–30 km | 45 min–1 h | Slow through Theog market; tea at Fagu if you left early |
| Narkanda | about 65 km | about 2 h | Highest point of the day (about 2,700 m); Hatu peak road branches off here |
| Rampur Bushahr | about 130 km | 4–4.5 h | Lunch at HPTDC Cafe Sutlej; last big town with banks, fuel and a pharmacy |
| Jhakri / Jeori | about 150–155 km | 5 h | Jeori is the turn-off for Sarahan, 17 km uphill; fuel pump at Jeori |
| Nigulsari / Bhabanagar / Nathpa | about 165–185 km | 5.5–6 h | The landslide belt; do not stop under the cliffs, no night driving |
| Wangtu / Tapri | about 205–215 km | 6.5–7 h | Bridge over the Sutlej at Wangtu; the Kinnaur district board is just before it |
| Karcham | about 230 km | 7–7.5 h | Baspa meets the Sutlej; turn right for Sangla and Chitkul, straight on for Peo |
| Powari / Reckong Peo | about 246–255 km | 8–8.5 h | Leave NH-5 at Powari and climb to Peo; fill the tank here |
| Kalpa | about 255–265 km | 8.5–9 h | 7–8 km above Peo on a steep but tarred road; Kothi temple on the way |
Distances are rounded from the Discover with Dheeraj NH-5 guide and our own trip sheets; running times assume a dry road and a 06:00 start. Add an hour for every stop you did not plan.
What is the NH-5 road condition from Shimla to Kalpa now?
As of October 2026, NH-5 is open from Shimla through Kinnaur to Sumdo on the Spiti border. The only recurring trouble spot is the Nigulsari–Nathpa stretch between Jeori and Wangtu. A large landslide at Nigulsari closed the highway on 6 August 2026 and damaged two trucks (Amar Ujala, 6 Aug 2026); rockfall was still being reported at Nigulsari and Brauni Nalla in mid-September; by early October the road was calm, with the advice to check the morning you leave because rain can shut Nigulsari for a few hours (Discover with Dheeraj, updated 20 Oct 2026).
During the 2025 monsoon the Kinnaur administration barred all traffic through Nigulsari from 8 pm to 5 am because of shooting stones (Tribune, 31 Aug 2025). Whether an order is in force on your date or not, our rule is the same: be past Wangtu before 5 pm and never on the cliff stretch after dark. If you are driving yourself, the Kinnaur district website and the local WhatsApp groups that hotels run are the quickest way to hear about a block.
Between Rampur and Karcham the road also passes the Nathpa Jhakri and Karcham Wangtoo hydro projects, which means heavy project traffic, dust and single-lane stretches at the tunnel portals. Keep windows up through the project zones and expect to crawl behind trucks for a few kilometres at a time.
Should you take the bus, a taxi or your own car?
| Option | Time | Cost (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| HRTC ordinary bus to Reckong Peo | 10–11 h, plus 30 min to Kalpa | about ₹500–600 | Solo travellers, tight budgets |
| Private car with driver | 9–10 h with stops | ask for a quote; depends on car and days | Families, groups of 3–6, anyone stopping at Sarahan or Sangla |
| Self-drive | 9–11 h | fuel and tolls only | Confident hill drivers with a high-clearance car |
| Shared taxi (Rampur or Peo stands) | varies, fills before leaving | per seat, negotiated on the day | Backpackers joining the road partway |
Bus details. The HRTC service we found listed from Shimla to Reckong Peo leaves at 06:10, goes via Rampur, and is scheduled at 10 hours 25 minutes for ₹600 in an ordinary 3+2 seater (Abhibus listing, Jan 2026). Older timetables also show a direct Shimla–Kalpa bus about 06:15 and a Reckong Peo bus via Sunni at 05:00, while the Delhi and Chandigarh to Reckong Peo buses pass through Shimla around 09:00; fares on those are similar. Timings shift with the season, so phone the Shimla ISBT (0177-2659795) or check the HRTC site the day before. Buses stop for lunch at Rampur and usually reach Peo in the late afternoon.
Car details. A sedan is fine in dry months; from November to March, or if you plan Chitkul or Nako, ask for an SUV. We send a driver who has done the road recently, because the single-lane sections and the project traffic reward someone who knows where to wait and where to push. On a two-day plan the car is also your transport around Sangla, Chitkul and Roghi, which the bus is not.
Where should you stop on the way from Shimla to Kalpa?
- Narkanda (65 km). Tea with a view of the Shrikhand range. If you left late, this is also a good overnight; our Chandigarh guests sleep here on night one.
- Rampur Bushahr (130 km). The old capital of the Bushahr state on the Sutlej. Padam Palace is visible from the road, and the HPTDC cafe is the standard lunch halt. Fill the tank and withdraw cash.
- Jeori (about 150 km) for Sarahan. The Bhimakali temple at Sarahan, 17 km up from Jeori, is the finest piece of Kinnauri wooden architecture most visitors will see. If you have time for only one detour, make it this one, or sleep at Sarahan and reach Kalpa by lunch the next day.
- Karcham (about 230 km) for Sangla and Chitkul. The road up the Baspa valley to Sangla is about 18 km and Chitkul another 25 km beyond. Our Sangla and Chitkul guide covers it; most itineraries do Sangla first and Kalpa second.
- Kothi temple (just below Kalpa). Ten minutes for the Chandika Devi temple on the climb from Reckong Peo.
What should you know before driving to Kalpa yourself?
Self-driving is common on this road and the surface is better than its reputation. The risks are specific: blind hairpins on the Narkanda descent, trucks in the project zones, and the rockfall belt. A few habits make it safe.
- Leave Shimla by 06:00 so you are through Nigulsari by early afternoon and in Kalpa before dark.
- Refuel at Rampur and again at Reckong Peo; pumps between them (Jeori, near Karcham) are useful but not guaranteed to have stock.
- Carry cash, a basic toolkit, a tow rope and water. Mobile coverage drops between Jeori and Tapri; Jio and BSNL work best in Kinnaur.
- Pull in and stop for the HRTC buses and the project trucks; they will not stop for you.
- From November onwards carry chains and check the overnight forecast; Narkanda is the first place to ice over.
- If the road closes, wait with the queue. The crews clear most slides within hours; turning back to Rampur rarely saves time.
Once you are there, our Kalpa travel guide covers the village, the walks to Roghi and Suicide Point, and where to stay; the Kalpa in winter guide covers the snow months.
Is Shimla to Kalpa part of a longer trip?
Usually. Three ways we run it:
- Kinnaur loop from Chandigarh, 6 nights. Narkanda, Sangla (two nights with Chitkul), Kalpa (two nights), Sarahan, back. Our Eccentric Kinnaur package is from ₹24,999 per person, twin sharing, Deluxe, off-season; about 25% more in peak dates.
- Kinnaur from Shimla, shorter. If you are already in Shimla, the Unexplored Kinnaur from Shimla page shows the plan; prices on request for your dates.
- On to Spiti. Kalpa is the natural last stop before Nako, Tabo and Kaza. In summer the full circuit exits via Kunzum and the Atal Tunnel to Manali, which is our Kinnaur–Kaza with Chandratal package from ₹32,500. From 15 October 2026 the Gramphu–Batal road is shut for winter, so until about June Spiti is an out-and-back on this same NH-5; see our winter Spiti guide for 2026–27.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours is Shimla to Kalpa by road?
Plan on 7–8 hours of actual driving and 9–10 hours door to door with a lunch halt at Rampur and a couple of photo stops. The HRTC bus to Reckong Peo is scheduled at about 10.5 hours, plus half an hour up to Kalpa. Leaving Shimla by 06:00 gets you in before dark; a later start means a night at Sarahan or Sangla.
Is there a direct bus from Shimla to Kalpa?
Older HRTC timetables list a direct Shimla–Kalpa bus around 06:15, and there are several Shimla–Reckong Peo services, including one at 06:10 and the Delhi and Chandigarh buses that pass Shimla about 09:00. Fares are roughly ₹500–600. From Reckong Peo, local buses and shared taxis cover the 7–8 km to Kalpa. Confirm timings at Shimla ISBT the day before.
Is the Shimla to Kalpa road safe?
In dry months, yes, with normal hill-driving care. The risk is concentrated between Jeori and Wangtu, where Nigulsari and Nathpa see rockfall during and after rain; the highway was blocked there on 6 August 2026 and a night ban from 8 pm to 5 am was imposed in the 2025 monsoon. Avoid July to mid-September, never drive that stretch after dark, and check the status the morning you leave.
Can you do Shimla to Kalpa in one day?
Yes, if you leave by 06:00 and keep stops short; you will reach Kalpa by about 16:00. We prefer to split it with a night at Sarahan, 17 km above Jeori, or at Sangla up the Baspa valley. That turns a tiring day into two easy ones and adds the Bhimakali temple or Chitkul to the trip for no extra driving.
Where can you stop for lunch between Shimla and Kalpa?
Rampur Bushahr, about 130 km from Shimla, is the standard halt; HPTDC Cafe Sutlej and a row of dhabas sit on the main road. Narkanda has tea stalls and a few restaurants for an early break, and there are dhabas at Jeori and Tapri. After Karcham there is little until Reckong Peo, so eat at Rampur even if you are not hungry yet.
Which is better, Shimla to Kalpa or Shimla to Sangla first?
Most itineraries do Sangla first, then Kalpa. Sangla is lower (about 2,700 m), the Chitkul day trip is easier from there, and the Karcham turn-off comes before Powari on the drive up. Kalpa, at about 2,960 m with the Kinnaur Kailash view, makes a better finale, and from Kalpa you can return via Sarahan without doubling back.
