It is close, it is affordable, and it gives you four completely different holidays inside one small island. In a single week you can stand on a colonial-era rampart in Galle, ride the hill train through tea country to Ella, climb a fifth-century rock fortress at Sigiriya and watch elephants at a waterhole in Udawalawe. Flights from Chennai take about an hour and a half; Delhi and Mumbai are direct too. The food will feel familiar, rice and curry is the national staple, and vegetarian eating is genuinely easy rather than a negotiation.
The four Sri Lankas — and how to combine them
The Cultural Triangle
Sigiriya rock fortress, the cave temples at Dambulla and the ruined capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. This is the historical heart of the island and needs two to three days. Sigiriya is a genuine climb of around 1,200 steps, best attempted early morning before the heat.
Hill country and tea
Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Cool air, waterfalls, tea estates you can walk through, and the train journey between Kandy and Ella that is regularly called one of the most scenic rail routes anywhere. Two to three days, and the single part of the trip most people say they would extend.
Beaches and the south coast
Bentota, Mirissa, Unawatuna and the Dutch fort town of Galle. Whale watching operates out of Mirissa in season. Two or three days here at the end of a trip gives you the wind-down that a temple-and-fortress itinerary needs.
Wildlife parks
Yala for the highest leopard density in the world, Udawalawe for reliable elephant sightings, Wilpattu for a quieter safari. One full day plus an overnight nearby. Yala is busier and more of a lottery; Udawalawe is the safer bet if you want to be certain of seeing something.

Yala has the highest leopard density in the world but sightings are never guaranteed and the park gets busy. Morning drives give better odds. If seeing animals reliably matters more than seeing leopards specifically, Udawalawe and its elephants are the better choice.
