The four Sri Lankas — and how to combine them

The Cultural Triangle

Sigiriya rock fortress, the cave temples at Dambulla and the ruined capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. This is the historical heart of the island and needs two to three days. Sigiriya is a genuine climb of around 1,200 steps, best attempted early morning before the heat.

Hill country and tea

Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Cool air, waterfalls, tea estates you can walk through, and the train journey between Kandy and Ella that is regularly called one of the most scenic rail routes anywhere. Two to three days, and the single part of the trip most people say they would extend.

Beaches and the south coast

Wildlife parks

Yala for the highest leopard density in the world, Udawalawe for reliable elephant sightings, Wilpattu for a quieter safari. One full day plus an overnight nearby. Yala is busier and more of a lottery; Udawalawe is the safer bet if you want to be certain of seeing something.

When to go

Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts at opposite times, which means somewhere on the island is always in season. This is the single most useful thing to understand when planning.

December–March · West and southPeak season for Colombo, Bentota, Galle and Mirissa. Dry, sunny and best for beaches and whale watching. Book early — this is when everyone goes.

May–September · East coastWhile the west is wet, Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Arugam Bay are at their best. Good for surfing and quieter beaches.

Yala has the highest leopard density in the world but sightings are never guaranteed and the park gets busy. Morning drives give better odds. If seeing animals reliably matters more than seeing leopards specifically, Udawalawe and its elephants are the better choice.

Is vegetarian food easy to find?

Very. Rice and curry is typically served with several vegetable dishes, and South Indian food is widely available. Jain requirements need notice, which we give the hotels in advance.
