Short answer: Narkanda is a small hill town in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, about 65 km beyond Shimla on NH-5 (roughly 2 hours) at around 2,700 m. Go for Hatu Peak (about 3,400 m), the apple country of Thanedar and Kotgarh, the little lake at Tani Jubbar and, from late December to February, snow and beginner skiing. One night is enough; two lets you do Hatu at sunrise.

Quick answer

  • Where: Shimla district, on NH-5 (the road to Rampur and Kinnaur), about 65 km and 2 hours from Shimla.
  • Height: about 2,700 m, some 500 m above Shimla, so it is colder and gets snow more often.
  • Top sights: Hatu Peak and Hatu Mata temple, Tani Jubbar lake, Thanedar and Kotgarh orchards, Mahamaya temple at Kacheri, the Sutlej viewpoint.
  • Best time: April–June for clear weather and Hatu Peak; October to early November for golden light and harvest-season orchards; late December to February for snow.
  • How long: a day trip from Shimla is possible; 1–2 nights is better.

Where is Narkanda and how high is it?

Narkanda sits on a saddle of the ridge east of Shimla, in Shimla district, where NH-5 (the old Hindustan–Tibet road towards Rampur Bushahr and Kinnaur) crosses one of its highest points. The town is at about 2,700 m (Incredible India puts it at 8,500 ft), around 500 m higher than Shimla’s Mall Road. That height is why Narkanda is cooler in summer, why it has views of the snow ranges to the north and east on clear days, and why it often gets snow when Shimla gets only rain.

It is a working town rather than a resort: a bus stand, a short bazaar, HPTDC’s Hotel Hatu and a growing number of homestays and small hotels, with apple orchards falling away on both sides of the ridge. Most visitors come for a day from Shimla; the better plan is a night, because Hatu Peak is at its best in the early morning.

What is the Narkanda distance from Shimla, Chandigarh and Delhi?

From Approx. distance Drive time Route notes
Shimla about 63–65 km about 2 h NH-5 via Kufri, Fagu and Theog; good road, bends and fog
Chandigarh about 180 km 5–6 h Parwanoo–Solan–Shimla bypass, then NH-5
Delhi about 410 km 10–11 h Best broken with a night in Shimla
Rampur Bushahr about 65 km 2–2.5 h Steep descent to the Sutlej; onward to Sarahan and Kinnaur

The nearest airports are Shimla (Jubbarhatti) and Chandigarh, and the nearest railhead is Shimla on the Kalka–Shimla line. HRTC buses heading from Shimla towards Rampur, Rohru and Kinnaur pass through Narkanda through the day, but in winter a private car is the practical choice: you can turn back or take the diversion if the road ices. In January 2025, for example, 1–2 inches of snow disrupted NH-5 at Narkanda and traffic was sent round by the Sainj–Luhri–Shimla route (The Tribune, 16 January 2025).

If you are continuing to Kinnaur, Narkanda is the natural first stop; our Shimla to Kalpa route guide covers the drive beyond it.

What are the best places to visit in Narkanda?

1. Hatu Peak and Hatu Mata temple

Hatu Peak is the reason most people come. At roughly 3,400 m (some sources give 3,352 m) it is described as the highest point in Shimla district, and a narrow road climbs to it from Narkanda through dense deodar and fir forest. At the top is the carved wooden Hatu Mata temple; locals hold it to be a shrine of the goddess Kali, while another tradition links it to Mandodari, Ravana’s wife. Nearby rocks known as Bheem Chulha are said to be where the Pandavas cooked. On a clear morning you see the snow ranges in an arc, including the Shrikhand Mahadev range. If you prefer to walk, it is a long day of about 11 km up and 11 km back by road, shorter on forest trails. Hatu Peak had the season’s first snow on 25 October 2026 (The Tribune), and the upper road usually becomes impassable to cars after heavy snow. For the mountain itself, see our list of peaks in Himachal Pradesh.

2. Jor Bagh meadows

About an hour’s walk from Hatu Peak through forest, the open meadows of Jor Bagh are quiet, good for a picnic, and a reason to stay longer at the top rather than drive straight back down.

3. Tani Jubbar lake

About 15 minutes’ drive from Narkanda, Tani Jubbar is a small oval man-made lake beside a Nag Devta temple, ringed by trees. It is not dramatic, but it is peaceful and an easy add-on on the way to or from Thanedar.

4. Thanedar and Kotgarh: the apple country

Around 15 km from Narkanda by a forest road, Thanedar and neighbouring Kotgarh are where Himachal’s apple economy began. Samuel Evans Stokes, an American who settled here, introduced the improved apple varieties that changed the region, and his family’s orchards are still worked. He also built the Paramjyoti temple in Thanedar in the local Pahari style. Nearby is the old St Mary’s Church, a 19th-century mission church (sources differ on its exact year). Come between late summer and autumn to see orchards heavy with fruit and packing sheds busy.

5. Mahamaya temple, Kacheri

About 10 km from Narkanda towards Rampur, the Mahamaya temple at Kacheri is dedicated to the goddess Kali and is a short stop on the Rampur road.

6. Sutlej viewpoint

Roughly half an hour down the Rampur road, a viewpoint looks over the deep Sutlej valley. Pair it with Kacheri if you have a free afternoon, or stop on the way if you are heading to Kinnaur.

7. The ski slopes in town

Narkanda is one of India’s oldest ski areas: Incredible India notes that skiers have come here since 1980, with snow from December and guided lessons usually from January to March. The slopes are close to town and suit complete beginners. Our adventure team’s snow and skiing in Narkanda page covers lessons, the Hatu views and what runs in which month, and skiing in Himachal compares Narkanda with Kufri and Solang.

What is Narkanda weather like, month by month?

Months What to expect Good for
Late Dec – Feb Coldest months; nights below freezing; snow comes with western disturbances; NH-5 can close for hours Snow, beginner skiing (Jan–Mar)
March Snow melting in town, still on Hatu; cold mornings Late ski days, quiet stays
April – June Pleasant days, cool nights; apple blossom in spring; busiest months Hatu Peak, walks, families
July – mid Sep Monsoon cloud and rain; landslide risk lower down NH-5 Orchards, misty forests (flexible plans)
Late Sep – Nov Clear skies, crisp air, longest views; first snow on Hatu possible from late October Views, photography, fewer crowds

Town snow is not guaranteed in any given week. In December 2024 the upper Shimla belt, including Kufri and Narkanda, got good snow just before Christmas (The Tribune, 24 December 2024), and Narkanda was again among the snow spots tourists flocked to over New Year (All India Radio, 31 December 2024). If snow is the point of your trip, keep two or three flexible days and watch the forecast; our Himachal snowfall guide for winter 2026-27 explains how to read it.

How many days do you need, and what does a good plan look like?

Day trip from Shimla: leave by 8 am, stop at Kufri briefly, reach Narkanda by 10, drive up to Hatu Peak, lunch in town, Tani Jubbar on the way back. It works, but you spend four hours in the car.

One night (recommended): Day 1 drive from Shimla, afternoon at Thanedar and Tani Jubbar, night in Narkanda. Day 2 Hatu Peak at sunrise, Jor Bagh walk, then back to Shimla or onward to Rampur and Sarahan.

Two nights in winter: the extra night gives you a buffer for snow days, a ski lesson and the chance to see Hatu after fresh snow once the road reopens.

How much does a Narkanda trip cost with a package?

Narkanda is usually added to a Shimla–Manali or Kinnaur trip rather than sold alone. On our live pages today (2 November 2026), the Shimla Manali tour from Chandigarh (5N/6D) starts from ₹12,499 per person on twin sharing at the off-season rate, and the Shimla Manali package from Delhi (5N/6D) starts from ₹14,999 per person with standard 3-star hotels. We can add a Narkanda day or night to either; ask for the revised quote. Shorter trips can build on the Chandigarh–Shimla 3N/4D tour, and if you are heading on to the Sutlej valley, the Kinnaur tour from Shimla already passes through Narkanda.

Practical tips before you go

  • Winter driving: from late December to February the stretch around Narkanda ices over; travel with a driver used to snow chains and leave early. An SUV is easier than a small car.
  • Cash and network: carry some cash; mobile data is fine in town but weak on the Hatu road.
  • Layers: even in May, mornings on Hatu Peak are cold; in winter pack thermals, gloves and waterproof shoes.
  • Temples: remove shoes, dress modestly, and ask before photographing inside Hatu Mata temple.
  • Combine well: Narkanda pairs naturally with Shimla in January for a snow week, or with Sarahan and Kinnaur going east.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Narkanda from Shimla?

About 63–65 km by NH-5, through Kufri, Fagu and Theog. The drive takes about 2 hours in normal conditions. In heavy snow the road around Narkanda can close for hours or traffic may be diverted via Sainj and Luhri, so allow extra time between late December and February.

When does it snow in Narkanda?

Snow usually comes between late December and February, brought by western disturbances, with January and February the most reliable months for snow on the ground. Hatu Peak above town can get its first snow much earlier; in 2026 it had the season’s first snow on 25 October. No week is guaranteed, so keep flexible days.

Is Narkanda better than Kufri?

Narkanda is higher, quieter and more forested, with Hatu Peak and the apple villages close by; Kufri is only 16–20 km from Shimla and easier for a short outing but much busier. If you have a full day or a night, Narkanda gives the better mountain experience; with only a few hours, Kufri is the practical choice.

Can you drive to the top of Hatu Peak?

Yes, in normal weather a narrow road runs from Narkanda through the forest to the Hatu Mata temple near the top. It is steep and single-lane in places, so a local driver helps. After heavy snow the upper road is usually blocked to cars, and you either walk part of the way or wait for it to clear.

Is Narkanda good for skiing beginners?

Yes. Narkanda has gentle slopes near town that have been used for skiing since 1980, and guided lessons usually run from January to March when there is enough snow. It is a place to learn the basics, not to ski long runs; experienced skiers usually prefer Gulmarg in Kashmir.

How many days are enough for Narkanda?

One night is enough for most people: arrive by lunch, visit Thanedar and Tani Jubbar, then go up Hatu Peak at sunrise the next morning. In winter, add a second night as a buffer for snow closures and a ski lesson. A day trip from Shimla is possible but rushed.

Facts checked 2 November 2026 against Incredible India (Narkanda page), The Tribune (24 December 2024, 16 January 2025, 25 October 2026) and All India Radio (31 December 2024). Road and snow conditions change quickly: check before travel.
