Kasauli Snowfall: When It Snows and Where to Find Snow Nearby (2026-27)

Short answer: Kasauli snowfall is rare and light. At about 1,800 m the town gets snow only in some winters, usually between late December and mid-February (8 January 2020, early February 2021). For sure snow, base in Kasauli and drive up to Chail, Kufri or Narkanda on the forecast day.

Short answer: Kasauli snowfall is rare and light. The town sits at about 1,800 m, low enough that most winters bring only cold, clear days and the odd flurry. When it does snow, it is usually during a strong western disturbance between late December and mid-February: Kasauli got its season’s first snow on 8 January 2020 and again in early February 2021. If you want guaranteed snow, base yourself in Kasauli and drive up to Chail, Kufri or Narkanda on the day snow is forecast.

Quick answer

  • Does it snow in Kasauli? Sometimes, not every year. Expect light snow in a good winter, nothing in a dry one.
  • Best chance: January, then early February. December is usually cold and dry.
  • Recent recorded snow: 8 January 2020 (Kasauli, Solan, Barog, Dagshai); 3–4 February 2021 (Kasauli and Dagshai). In early February 2022 nearby Chail got about 4.5 inches while Kasauli saw at most flurries.
  • Surer snow nearby: Chail (about 2,250 m), Shimla and Kufri (about 2,200–2,500 m), Narkanda (about 2,700 m).

Does it actually snow in Kasauli?

Yes, but far less than people expect. Kasauli is a British cantonment town founded in 1842 on a ridge in Solan district, and at roughly 1,800 m it is several hundred metres lower than Shimla. Wikipedia’s climate summary for the town gives winter temperatures of around 2°C, a record low of about −6°C and notes that “sometimes snowfall is also there during early January”. That is a fair way to put it: the cold is reliable, the snow is not.

What decides it is altitude. A western disturbance that drops 30 cm on Kufri may bring only rain and sleet to Kasauli, because the snow line sits just above the town. Only the strongest systems push it low enough for the Mall Road and the church roofs to turn white. When that happens it is news: The Tribune ran “Solan, Barog turn white” after the 8 January 2020 spell and “Kasauli gets season’s first snowfall” after the early-February 2021 one.

When is the best time to see snow in Kasauli?

January is the best bet, with early February next. Both recorded snow days we could verify from news reports fall in that window. December is cold but usually dry, and by March the hills around Kasauli are getting rain, not snow – on 30 March 2026, for example, UNI reported 30 mm of rain at Kasauli while Keylong in Lahaul got 2 cm of snow.

Month What to expect in Kasauli Snow chance in town
November Crisp, clear days, cold nights, best views of the plains Very low
December Cold and mostly dry; Christmas–New Year crowds from Chandigarh and Delhi Low
January Coldest month; western disturbances bring rain, sleet and sometimes snow Best of the year, still not guaranteed
February Cold early, milder late; snow possible in the first half Moderate early, low late
March Spring rain, rhododendron and blossom season begins Very low

Snow odds above are our reading of past news reports and the town’s altitude, not an official forecast. For the week you travel, check the IMD city forecast for Kasauli (city.imd.gov.in) and the Meteorological Centre Shimla bulletins three to five days out.

Which years did Kasauli get snow?

These are the snow days we could confirm from dated news reports. We have left out years where we found only social-media claims.

  • 8 January 2020: The Tribune (9 January 2020) reported that Kasauli, Solan, Barog and Dagshai got the season’s first snowfall, while Chail turned white for the second time. Roads to Chail from Kufri, Junga and Sadhupul were blocked, the road beyond Barog was closed in the afternoon, and power was hit in Kasauli and Dagshai.
  • 3–4 February 2021: The Tribune reported season’s first snowfall in Kasauli and Dagshai, light, with vehicles skidding on the approach road and power cuts. The same report noted that only light snow had been seen in the area for several years.
  • 3 February 2022: Chail recorded around 4.5 inches of snow (The Tribune, 4 February 2022), which said Kasauli, Solan, Barog and Dagshai were “yet to experience snow this season”. Amar Ujala’s video report the same day showed snowflakes falling in Kasauli – so flurries, not a white town.

The pattern is clear: when Kasauli does get snow, Chail, Kufri and Narkanda get much more, and they often get it on days when Kasauli only sees rain.

Where can you find snow near Kasauli?

If snow is the point of the trip, stay in Kasauli for the views and quiet, but plan one day higher up. These are the usual options, ordered by how far you drive.

Place Approx. altitude From Kasauli Snow in a normal winter
Kasauli ~1,800 m – Occasional, light
Chail ~2,250 m About 2 hours via Solan and Kandaghat Most winters, a few spells
Shimla ~2,200 m 77 km Most winters; town snow usually Jan–Feb
Kufri ~2,500 m About 15 km beyond Shimla Regular in Jan–Feb
Narkanda ~2,700 m About 60 km beyond Shimla Most reliable; skiing Jan–Mar in good years

Chail is the closest real snow option and sits in the same Solan district; it often turns white when Kasauli only gets rain, as it did in February 2022. Kufri is the classic snow-play stop above Shimla – our Kufri snow guide covers what is open in winter. Narkanda holds snow the longest. For the whole state’s winter pattern, see our Himachal snowfall guide for 2026-27.

How do you plan a Kasauli trip around a snow forecast?

Snow near Kasauli comes with western disturbances, and the IMD usually flags them three to five days ahead. The trick is to keep one flexible day.

  1. Book Kasauli for two nights and keep the middle day free.
  2. Watch the IMD forecast for “light to moderate snow in middle and high hills” around your dates. Snow at Kasauli’s height usually needs a strong system and cold air behind it.
  3. On the snow day, drive up to Chail or Shimla–Kufri in the morning, before roads get crowded, and be back in Kasauli before dark. In January 2020 the Barog stretch and the roads to Chail were closed by afternoon.
  4. If snow falls in Kasauli itself, stay put – the Mall Road, Christ Church and the ridge walk are at their prettiest, and the approach road skids badly in the first hours.

If you are starting from Chandigarh, the Chandigarh to Shimla taxi route passes the Dharampur turn-off for Kasauli (a 12 km detour), so Kasauli plus Shimla or Kufri works as one trip.

What is Kasauli like in winter without snow?

Most visitors will get a dry winter, and that is not a bad trip. Clear days give long views over the plains, and on clear nights the lights of Chandigarh can be seen from the ridge. The town is small enough to walk: the Upper and Lower Mall, Christ Church, Gilbert Trail and Sunset Point. Monkey Point, the highest spot with the Hanuman temple, is inside the Air Force station about 4 km from the centre – carry ID, follow the guards’ instructions and keep phones away where told, as entry rules are set by the Air Force and can change.

Nights drop close to freezing, so heating matters more than the view when you choose a hotel. Ask whether the room has a heater or a fireplace and whether it is charged extra.

How do you reach Kasauli in winter?

  • From Chandigarh (58 km): about 1.5–2 hours via Pinjore and Parwanoo, turning off at Dharampur. Chandigarh airport and railway station are the usual starting points.
  • From Delhi: drive or take a train to Chandigarh or Kalka, then road. As of our late-October 2026 check, the Kalka–Shimla toy train was running only from Dharampur because the Kalka section was shut till 30 November – see our toy train status post.
  • From Shimla (77 km): about 2.5–3 hours via Solan and Dharampur.

On a snow day the last few kilometres into Kasauli get slippery fast. A driver who knows the hill and a car with good tyres matter more than the car size.

What should you pack for a Kasauli snow trip?

  • A proper down or padded jacket, thermal inner layers, woollen cap and gloves – nights can go below 0°C.
  • Waterproof shoes with grip; town lanes freeze after snow and sleet.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for the snow day at Kufri or Narkanda.
  • Some cash – power cuts hit Kasauli and Dagshai in both the 2020 and 2021 snow spells, and card machines go down with them.

Which package works for Kasauli and snow?

Kasauli fits neatly into a Shimla-side itinerary. Our Shimla Manali tour from Chandigarh (5N/6D) starts at ₹12,499 per person (deluxe, off-season, twin share) and can add a Kasauli night on the first day out of Chandigarh. From Delhi, the Shimla Manali tour from Delhi (5N/6D) starts at ₹14,999 per person plus 5% GST. For a shorter break, the Chandigarh–Shimla 3N/4D tour covers Shimla and Kufri, and Kasauli can be added on the way up. Prices are as shown on our package pages on 1 November 2026; Christmas–New Year dates carry a peak supplement. More options are on our Himachal tour packages from Chandigarh page.

Two good dates to aim for: the New Year weekend (Friday 1 January to Sunday 3 January 2027) and the Republic Day break (Tuesday 26 January 2027, with the Monday off). January gives the best odds of snow in Kasauli itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kasauli get snowfall every year?

No. Kasauli is at about 1,800 m, close to the usual snow line in the Shimla hills, so many winters pass with only rain, sleet or flurries. Snow was recorded in Kasauli on 8 January 2020 and in early February 2021, while in early February 2022 nearby Chail got about 4.5 inches and Kasauli saw only flakes. Plan the trip for the cold and the views, and treat snow as a bonus.

Which month is best for snowfall in Kasauli?

January is the best month, followed by the first half of February. Both verified snow spells in recent years fell between early January and early February. December is usually cold and dry, and March brings rain rather than snow. Keep one flexible day and watch the IMD Shimla forecast three to five days before you travel.

Is there snow in Kasauli in December?

Rarely. December in Kasauli is usually cold and clear, with nights near freezing and busy Christmas–New Year weekends, but snow in town is uncommon. If you travel in late December and want snow, plan a day trip to Kufri or Narkanda above Shimla, which hold snow far more often. Check the IMD forecast for “snow in middle hills” before you go.

Where is the nearest snow to Kasauli?

Chail, about two hours away via Solan and Kandaghat at roughly 2,250 m, is the nearest place with snow in most winters. Shimla is 77 km away, and Kufri about 15 km beyond Shimla is more reliable still. Narkanda, about 60 km past Shimla at around 2,700 m, holds snow the longest and has skiing in good years.

Is Kasauli or Shimla better for snow?

Shimla, clearly. At about 2,200 m it is roughly 400 m higher than Kasauli and gets snow in most winters, usually in January and February, while Kasauli gets it only in some years. Kufri and Narkanda above Shimla are better again. Kasauli is the better choice for a quiet, uncrowded hill break close to Chandigarh.

How cold does Kasauli get in winter?

Winter temperatures in Kasauli are around 2°C, with nights often near or below freezing in January, and the lowest recorded temperature is about −6°C according to the town’s climate records summarised on Wikipedia. Days are milder in sunshine. Pack thermals, a down jacket, gloves and grippy waterproof shoes, and ask your hotel about room heating.
