Updated: October 2026
Quick answer
- Best all-round month: October. The monsoon has gone (in 2026 it withdrew from all of Himachal on 3 October), skies are clear, Manali averages about 22°C by day and 6°C at night, and Kullu Dussehra runs 21–27 October 2026.
- For snow: late December to February. January and February are the snowiest months in Shimla; for surer snow go higher, to Solang, Sissu or Kufri.
- For escaping the heat: April to June, when Shimla and Manali stay around 20–26°C by day. This is also peak season, so book early.
- For Spiti and Lahaul by road: June to early October, while Kunzum La and the Manali–Leh passes are open.
- Avoid if you can: July and August, the heaviest rain months, when landslides close roads.
- Cheapest: on Suzu Travels packages, 1 July–30 September, 1 November–19 December and 6 January–14 March are off-season; October, 15 March–30 June and 20 December–5 January cost about 25% more.
There is no single best month for all of Himachal, because the state runs from 1,000 m valleys to 4,500 m passes. Shimla, Dharamshala and the Kullu–Manali belt are open all year; Spiti and Lahaul depend on high passes that are snowed shut for half the year. The table below shows what each month is actually like in the two places most trips include.
Himachal month by month
| Month | Shimla day / night | Manali day / night | What it is like |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 9°C / 2°C | 11°C / −1°C | Coldest month, best chance of snow; roads above Manali often shut after snowfall |
| February | 10°C / 2°C | 12°C / 0°C | Still snowy, fewer crowds, off-season rates |
| March | 15°C / 6°C | 17°C / 3°C | Thaw and blossom; wet spells in Manali; snow left at higher points |
| April | 20°C / 11°C | 21°C / 6°C | Pleasant, green, before the school-holiday rush |
| May | 23°C / 14°C | 25°C / 9°C | Peak summer season; Rohtang usually reopens around May |
| June | 24°C / 15°C | 26°C / 13°C | Busiest month; Spiti and Ladakh roads open; monsoon arrives late June |
| July | 21°C / 15°C | 26°C / 16°C | Heavy rain (Shimla about 330 mm), landslide risk |
| August | 21°C / 14°C | 25°C / 16°C | Wettest month (Shimla about 350 mm); travel only with flexible dates |
| September | 20°C / 13°C | 24°C / 12°C | Rain eases in the second half; green valleys, off-season rates |
| October | 19°C / 11°C | 22°C / 6°C | Driest, clearest month; Kullu Dussehra; first snow on the high passes |
| November | 15°C / 7°C | 17°C / 3°C | Crisp and quiet; Kunzum La usually closes early in the month |
| December | 12°C / 4°C | 14°C / 0°C | Christmas–New Year rush; snow in town is likelier from late December |
Temperatures are IMD 1991–2020 monthly averages of daily highs and lows, rounded. Single days can be much colder: Manali’s record low in January is about −12°C.
October and November: the clear-sky window
If you are visiting Himachal for the first time and just want good views and easy roads, go in October or the first half of November. The rain is over, the air is at its clearest, and both Shimla and Manali are comfortable by day and cold at night. October 2026 also has Kullu Dussehra (21–27 October), when deities from across the valley gather in Kullu’s Dhalpur ground. The trade-off: October is priced as peak season and long weekends get crowded. November drops back to off-season rates; read Manali in November or the October vs November comparison if you are choosing between them. Diwali-week ideas are in our Diwali holidays in Himachal guide.
December to February: snow season
Shimla averages about four snowy days each in January and February and only one or two in December, so a snow-in-town Christmas is far from certain. Snow is more reliable a little higher up: Kufri near Shimla, and Solang, the Atal Tunnel’s north portal and Sissu beyond Manali. Roads above Manali close after heavy snowfall, sometimes for a day or two, so build in a spare day. Our Himachal snowfall guide for winter 2026–27 explains where and when snow actually falls, and the winter Spiti guide covers the only route open to Spiti in winter, through Kinnaur. Snow activities around Manali are listed on our adventure page.
March to June: summer and the busiest season
From April, Shimla and Manali are pleasant while the plains are at 40°C, which is why May and June are the busiest months of the year. Expect traffic queues on long weekends, book hotels well in advance, and expect peak-season rates from 15 March. Rohtang Pass usually reopens to tourist vehicles around May, with a daily permit quota, and the Manali–Leh highway reopens around mid-May. Spiti by the Manali side only opens once Kunzum La is cleared, which happened on 20 May in 2026, and at first only for 4×4 vehicles.
July to September: monsoon
July and August are the wettest months in Shimla and Manali, and landslides regularly block highways in Kullu, Mandi, Shimla and Kinnaur districts. If you must travel then, keep your plans flexible and check the forecast daily; our monsoon guide explains which areas cope best. Spiti and Lahaul lie in the rain shadow and get little rain, but the roads leading to them can still be cut. From mid-September the rain eases, the valleys are at their greenest and package rates are still off-season.
Spiti, Lahaul and the high passes
- Rohtang Pass: roughly May to November, permit needed for tourist vehicles. The Atal Tunnel needs no permit and stays open through winter except after heavy snow.
- Kunzum La (Manali–Kaza): roughly June to October. In 2025–26 it was blocked from early November until 20 May.
- Spiti via Kinnaur (Shimla side): open most of the year, including winter, weather permitting.
Current permit rules and closures are on our Rohtang permit and road status page, updated weekly. Not sure which way to drive to Spiti? Read Spiti via Shimla or Manali.

Best month to visit Himachal: frequently asked questions
Which is the best month to visit Himachal Pradesh?
October is the best all-round month: the monsoon has ended, skies are clearest, days in Manali average about 22°C and Kullu Dussehra falls in October. April–June suits families escaping the heat, and late December–February suits snow trips.
Which month has snowfall in Himachal?
Snow falls mainly from late December to February. January and February are the snowiest months in Shimla, with about four snowy days each on average. Higher spots such as Kufri, Solang and Sissu get snow more reliably than Shimla or Manali town.
Is it safe to visit Himachal in July and August?
Many people do, but July and August are the heaviest rain months and landslides often block highways. Travel only with flexible dates, check the IMD forecast and road updates daily, and avoid long drives after heavy rain.
When is the cheapest time to visit Himachal?
On Suzu Travels packages the off-season runs 1 July–30 September, 1 November–19 December and 6 January–14 March. October, 15 March–30 June and 20 December–5 January are peak season, priced about 25% higher.
When can I visit Spiti Valley?
By the Manali route, roughly mid-June to early October, while Kunzum La is open. The Kinnaur route from Shimla stays open for most of the year, including winter, so winter Spiti trips go and return that way.
Is October a good time for Shimla and Manali?
Yes. October is the driest month, with clear mountain views, days of about 19–22°C and cold nights of 6–11°C. It is priced as peak season, so book a few weeks ahead, especially around long weekends and Kullu Dussehra.
