Where is Palampur, and what is it known for?
Palampur is a small town on a plateau in Kangra district at about 1,300 m, with the Dhauladhar range rising straight behind it. It is known as the “tea capital of north India”: Kangra tea estates were laid out on the slopes around the town from the mid-19th century, mostly by European planters, and the green rows of bushes still run right up to the edge of town.
Unlike Dharamshala or Manali, Palampur is not a tourist town built around a mall. It is a working hill town with tea gardens, an agricultural university, and quiet roads. That makes it a good base for families and older travellers who want gentle sightseeing with big mountain views.
Which tourist places in Palampur should you see?
| Place | Distance from Palampur | Time | Why go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tea gardens | Around town | 1–2 hours | Walk between the rows, watch plucking (roughly April to October), and see tea being processed where a factory allows visitors. |
| Saurabh Kalia Van Vihar | About 4 km | 1 hour | Forest park named after Kargil war hero Captain Saurabh Kalia, a son of Palampur; good with children. |
| Neugal Khad | About 3 km | 30–60 minutes | A deep chasm of the Neugal stream with the Dhauladhar behind; a classic Palampur view. |
| Bundla stream | Edge of town | 30 minutes | Stream along one side of town, popular with anglers. |
| Andretta | About 13 km (20 minutes) | 2 hours | Artists’ village: Sobha Singh art gallery, Andretta Pottery and Craft Society, Norah Richards’ Kangra-style mud house. |
| Baijnath temple | About 16 km | 1 hour | Nagara-style stone Shiva temple built in 1204 AD; ASI-protected. |
| Tashijong monastery | Near Taragarh, on the Baijnath side | 45 minutes | Tibetan monastery and settlement in a quiet valley. |
| Chamunda Devi | About 25 km | 1–1.5 hours | Major Devi shrine on the Baner river; the Aadi Himani Chamunda trek goes to the original hilltop shrine at about 2,900 m. |
| Bir and Billing | About 29–35 km to Bir; Billing 14 km above Bir | Half or full day | Tibetan colony, monasteries and tandem paragliding from Billing. |
What makes Andretta worth a visit?
Andretta is a small village that became an artists’ retreat. The Irish theatre artist Norah Richards settled here in 1924 and built a traditional Kangra-style mud house. The painter Sobha Singh, best known for his Sikh religious art, lived in Andretta until his death in 1986, and his home is now a gallery. The potter Gurcharan Singh, who founded Delhi Blue Pottery in 1952, also made Andretta his base; in 1983 his son Mansimran Singh and Mary Singh founded the Andretta Pottery and Craft Society, which still makes slipware and runs a terracotta museum.
Go for two hours, see the gallery and the pottery, and buy something made in the village. Check opening hours locally before you go, especially on Mondays and holidays.
Why is Baijnath temple important?
The Baijnath temple, in the town of the same name between Kangra and Mandi on NH-154, is dedicated to Shiva as Vaidyanath, “lord of physicians”. Inscriptions say it was built in 1204 AD by two local merchants, Ahuka and Manyuka, in the Nagara style, and it is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Local legend links the lingam to Ravana, which is why Dussehra is not celebrated here. A large fair is held at Shivratri.
