Where is Tosh, and what is it like?
The Parvati valley runs east from Bhuntar, near Kullu, past Kasol and Manikaran to Barshaini, where the motor road ends. Tosh sits above Barshaini on a steep hillside facing the Parvati gorge, a village of stone-and-timber houses, apple trees, cafes and homestays. The peaks at the head of the valley carry snow well into spring.
Compared with Kasol, Tosh is higher, quieter and colder. There are no big hotels, no ATMs and only patchy phone signal. People come to sit on a cafe terrace with a view, walk to the waterfall and meadows above the village, and use it as a base for Kheerganga. If you want nightlife and lots of choice, stay in Kasol and visit Tosh for a day.
How do you reach Tosh?
| Leg | Distance | How |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi → Kasol | About 520 km, 11–12 hours | Overnight bus, or Delhi to Kasol taxi from about ₹7,799 one way (sedan, our published fare). |
| Manali → Kasol | About 75 km | About 2 hours by car; sedan one way from about ₹2,499 on our Manali taxi page. |
| Kasol → Barshaini | About 20 km | Local bus (cheapest), shared taxi or your own car, via Manikaran. |
| Barshaini → Tosh | About 3 km uphill | Shared cab on a rough link road, or walk 30–60 minutes (1–2 hours with luggage). |
The Manikaran–Barshaini road is narrow and prone to slides; reports in early 2026 mentioned landslides near Ghatigarh. Parking near Barshaini is tight, so most people leave the car there or come by taxi. Fill fuel at Bhuntar and draw cash in Kasol.
What can you do in Tosh?
| Experience | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Tosh waterfall | 30–35 minutes’ walk each way | Gentle walk above the village; slippery after rain or snow. |
| Kutla meadow | Half a day | A shepherd settlement and meadow higher up, with snow views; go with a local in shoulder seasons. |
| Cafe terraces and village lanes | Any time | Siddu, trout and wood-fired pizza with a view of the gorge; many cafes shut in deep winter. |
| Kheerganga day trek | Full day from Barshaini | About 12–13 km each way to a hot spring at about 2,960 m. Camping and night stays at the top are not allowed since July 2024; reach by about 10 am and leave by 2 pm. See our Kheerganga trek page. |
What are Pulga, Tulga and Kalga?
These three small villages sit near Barshaini, on the side of the valley towards the Kheerganga trails. They are quieter alternatives to Tosh and easy to combine with it.
| Village | Approx. altitude | Getting there | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kalga | About 2,300 m | About 30 minutes’ walk from Barshaini | Largest of the three; most homestays and cafes, apple orchards, close to the Kheerganga trail. |
| Pulga | About 2,210 m | About 3 km from Barshaini | Old wooden houses and the deodar “Fairy Forest” a short walk away; quieter. |
| Tulga | Between the two | About 10 minutes from Pulga, 15–25 minutes from Kalga | Smallest and most basic; better as a day walk. |
A good plan is one night in Tosh for the views and one in Kalga or Pulga for the forest, with the Kheerganga day walk in between if you are fit.
When is the best time to visit Tosh?
| Months | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| March–June | Roughly 15–25°C by day; snow still on the peaks in March–April | Best for walks and Kheerganga; May–June is the busiest time. |
| July–mid-September | Monsoon; slides on the Barshaini road and trails | Avoid if you can. |
| Mid-September–November | Roughly 10–20°C, clear skies, autumn colour | The best window for views and fewer crowds. |
| December–February | Snow, nights well below freezing, many cafes closed | Beautiful but hard; the path and link road get icy. Kheerganga is under snow. |

Where should you stay in and around Tosh?
Tosh, Kalga and Pulga have family homestays, small guest houses and cafe-rooms. Listings in 2026 show basic rooms from roughly ₹400–800 a night, more for rooms with views and attached bathrooms, and Barshaini guest houses around ₹700–800. Prices rise in May–June and on long weekends. In winter, ask about heating and hot water before you book, and expect to pay walk-in rates after checking the room in the off-season.
Is Tosh safe for families and couples?
Tosh itself is a working village with homestay families, and most visitors have an easy time. A few rules matter in the Parvati valley:
- Stay away from the riverbed. The Parvati can rise suddenly when water is released upstream; two tourists were swept away near Kasol in May 2025.
- Refuse drugs. Cannabis is illegal in India despite the valley’s reputation, and police carry out regular checks.
- Don’t trek alone above the villages, and tell your homestay your route. Phone signal is weak above Barshaini.
- Carry cash from Kasol; there is no ATM in Tosh.
Families with young children or older parents usually find Kasol or Manikaran easier as a base, with Tosh as a day trip.
How do you fit Tosh into a trip?
- Manali + Kasol + Tosh (5–6 days): three nights in Manali, then one in Kasol and one in Tosh or Kalga. Our Manali itinerary shows the Manali days, and the Manali tour package from Delhi (4N/5D), from ₹14,999 per person off-season on its live page, can be extended with Parvati valley nights.
- Kasol weekend + Tosh: see our Kasol trip plan and camping in Kasol.
- The whole valley: our Parvati valley guide covers Kasol, Manikaran, Malana and Kheerganga together.
What this means for your trip
Treat Tosh as a one- or two-night stop, not a day out from Manali. Reach Kasol first, go up to Barshaini in the morning, and walk or take a shared cab to Tosh. Spend a day on the waterfall and Kutla walks, add a night in Kalga or Pulga, and do Kheerganga as a day trek only. Pick March–June or mid-September to November, carry cash, keep away from the river, and in winter be ready for snow and closed cafes.
