In the Maldives you are not choosing a city and then a hotel. You are choosing one island, and you will stay on it for your entire trip. There is no stepping out to explore, no changing your mind on day two. This makes the choice of resort the single most important decision of the holiday — far more than in any other destination. Get the island right and it is extraordinary. Get it wrong and you are stuck. That is where a real conversation beats a comparison website.
Resort islands, local islands and liveaboards
Private resort islands
One resort occupies the whole island. All-inclusive or half-board, water villas or beach villas, complete privacy. This is the Maldives of the photographs and it is the right choice for honeymoons and special occasions. It is also the expensive option, and the gap between a good mid-range resort and a famous-name one is often more about the brand than the water.
Local islands — the budget route
Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah and others are inhabited islands with guesthouses rather than resorts. You get the same water and reefs at a fraction of the cost, with excursions to sandbanks and snorkelling sites. Local islands are Muslim communities, so bikinis are restricted to designated tourist beaches and alcohol is not served. For many Indian families that is not a problem at all, and the savings are substantial.
Liveaboard boats
For divers and snorkellers who want to move between atolls rather than stay put. You sleep on the boat and reach reefs day-trippers never see. Worth considering if the underwater part is the actual point of your trip.
Water villa or beach villa?
The question we get asked most. Water villas are the icon — steps straight into the lagoon, glass floor panels, complete privacy. They also cost significantly more, get hot in the afternoon sun, and are not ideal for families with small children because of the open deck and deep water. Beach villas put you on sand with shade and easy access, often with a private pool for less than the water villa costs. A common approach that works well: two nights beach, two nights water. You get the photograph and the practicality. We will tell you honestly which suits your group rather than upselling the villa with the bigger commission.
How the transfer works — and why it affects your budget
Getting from Male airport to your island is a real cost and a real planning constraint, not a detail. Speedboat transfers serve nearby resorts, take twenty minutes to an hour and are the cheapest. Seaplanes reach the further atolls, are spectacular, and add meaningfully to the bill. Crucially, seaplanes only fly in daylight, so a late-evening arrival into Male can mean an unplanned night in a Male hotel before you reach your resort. Domestic flight plus speedboat serves the distant southern atolls. We factor the transfer into the quote from the start, because a cheaper resort with an expensive seaplane can easily cost more than a nearer one.
