What does a Manali trip cost from Delhi versus Chandigarh?
Chandigarh saves you about 250 km each way, which is a full day of driving on a round trip. That is why couples and families often fly or take a train to Chandigarh and start the road trip there.
| Getting there and back | From Delhi | From Chandigarh |
|---|---|---|
| Distance, drive time | About 540 km, 11–13 hours | About 290 km, 7–8 hours |
| AC Volvo return, per person | Approx. ₹2,000–3,600 | Lower; check the day’s fare |
| Sedan, two one-way drops, per car | From about ₹13,800 | From about ₹8,400 |
| Same, per person for 4 people | About ₹3,450 | About ₹2,100 |
For four people, a private sedan costs only a little more than four Volvo returns from Delhi, and you get door-to-door travel and daylight driving. For two people, the Volvo is clearly cheaper. Tolls, parking and, for cars registered outside Himachal, the state entry fee of ₹100 a day and the Manali green tax of ₹200 per car (valid seven days) are extra. Our Himachal entry tax and permits 2026 page has the full list.
How much is a Kullu Manali trip for a couple or a family?
Couples pay the same per person as in the tables above, because hotel rooms are priced per room and shared by two. Families of four save on the car, since one taxi carries everyone, and often on the hotel too if children share the room.
- Couple, 4N/5D from Chandigarh, comfortable: our Kullu Manali honeymoon package lists ₹12,999 per person (Deluxe), ₹15,339 (Super Deluxe) and ₹17,549 (Luxury), off-season, with a private car from Chandigarh. For two, that is about ₹26,000–35,100 in all.
- Couple or friends, 4N/5D from Delhi: the Manali tour package from Delhi lists ₹14,999 (Deluxe), ₹17,699 (Super Deluxe) and ₹20,249 (Luxury) per person, off-season, with an overnight private AC cab, three nights in Manali, breakfast and dinner.
- Family of four, 5 days, mid-range DIY from Delhi: roughly ₹55,000–95,000 for the family, with one sedan or Ertiga, two rooms or a family room, and Solang and Sissu days. Our Himachal family package page shows how a package compares.
“Kullu Manali” usually adds a Kullu–Manikaran–Kasol day or rafting on the Beas, which adds one more taxi day and the activity fee to the totals.
When is Manali cheapest, and when is it most expensive?
| Period | Price level | Why |
|---|---|---|
| November to mid-December | Low | Clear, cold and quiet; off-season hotel rates. Rohtang closed, Sissu open on most days. |
| 24 December to 2 January | Highest | Christmas–New Year rush; minimum-stay rules and gala-dinner charges at many hotels. |
| January to February | Medium | Snow season; weekends after fresh snow get busy. |
| March to April | Low to medium | Shoulder season; good value before the summer rush. |
| May to June | High | School holidays and Rohtang reopening; hotels and cabs at peak rates. |
| July to mid-September | Lowest | Monsoon; landslide risk on the highway, paragliding and rafting closed. |
For the month-by-month weather behind these prices, see best time to visit Manali.
Is a Manali package cheaper than planning it yourself?
For backpackers on a Volvo, doing it yourself is cheaper. For couples and families who want a private car and a decent hotel, a package usually comes out similar or lower, because an operator buys hotel rooms and cab days at trade rates and you avoid paying a full day’s cab for half-day trips.
The real difference is risk. A package includes the overnight drive, the hotel, two meals a day and sightseeing days for one price, and the operator handles a road closure or a hotel problem. Doing it yourself, you pay as you go and you sort out a Solang or Atal Tunnel closure yourself. Which hidden costs push up a Manali trip?
- Entry fee and green tax: ₹100 a day state entry fee for out-of-state passenger vehicles and ₹200 Manali green tax per car. Himachal-registered taxis don’t pay these.
- Snow clothing: snow suits and gumboots on rent near Solang and Sissu; agree the price before you take them.
- Parking and toilets at Hadimba, Solang and Sissu.
- Peak-date surcharges on cabs and hotels for Christmas–New Year, long weekends and May–June.
- Rohtang in summer: the ₹550 permit and a dearer taxi day (₹4,999 for a sedan on our published rates).
- GST: package prices are often quoted plus 5% GST; check whether a quote includes it.
What this means for your trip
Decide two things first: Volvo or private car, and budget or 3-star hotel. Those two choices set about 70% of your bill. Then pick the month: November to mid-December and March–April give the best value, while the Christmas week and May–June cost the most. If you are two people on a tight budget, take the Volvo and share local cabs. If you are a family or a couple who want comfort, price a package such as our Shimla Manali tour from Delhi (6D/5N, from ₹14,499 per person) against your own plan before you book. Manali trip cost: frequently asked questions
What is the cost of a 3-day Manali trip from Delhi?
About ₹6,000–10,000 per person on a budget, with an AC Volvo, a budget room shared by two and shared local cabs. A comfortable 3-day trip with a 3-star hotel and a private local taxi costs about ₹11,000–19,000 per person. Peak dates cost more.
How much does a 5-day Manali trip cost per person?
Roughly ₹9,000–15,000 per person on a budget and ₹18,000–31,000 at mid-range, for four nights in Manali with two people sharing a room. A packaged 4N/5D trip from Delhi starts from ₹14,999 per person off-season on our live package page.
How much is a Kullu Manali trip for a couple?
Our Kullu Manali honeymoon package from Chandigarh lists ₹12,999 per person (Deluxe), ₹15,339 (Super Deluxe) and ₹17,549 (Luxury) for 4N/5D off-season, or about ₹26,000–35,100 for two. Doing it yourself at mid-range costs about the same for a couple.
Is 10,000 rupees enough for a Manali trip?
Yes, for a 3-day backpacker trip from Delhi: an AC Volvo return, two nights in a budget room or hostel, dhaba meals and shared cabs. It is not enough for a private car or a 3-star hotel, or for Christmas–New Year and May–June dates.
What is the cheapest month to visit Manali?
July to mid-September is cheapest, but it is the monsoon, with landslide risk and no paragliding or rafting. The best-value months for a good trip are November to mid-December and March to April, when the weather is clear and hotels charge off-season rates.
Is a taxi from Delhi to Manali expensive?
A one-way sedan starts from about ₹6,899 on our published fares, so two one-way drops cost about ₹13,800. Shared by four people, that is about ₹3,450 each, a little more than a Volvo return each. Tolls, parking and Himachal entry charges are extra.
Do I need to pay any tax to enter Manali?
Cars registered outside Himachal pay a state entry fee of ₹100 a day for passenger vehicles up to 12 seats in 2026-27, and a Manali green tax of ₹200 per car, valid seven days. Himachal-registered taxis and bus passengers do not pay these.
