Which package should an international visitor choose?
It depends on how much time you have and how high you want to go.
- First visit, 5–6 days: Shimla–Manali. Colonial Shimla and its Mall Road, then the Kullu Valley and Manali with a day at Solang or through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu. Our Shimla guide and Manali guide cover each town in depth.
- Tibetan culture and the Dalai Lama’s town: Dharamshala–Dalhousie. McLeod Ganj, the Tsuglagkhang temple complex, Norbulingka Institute, then the meadow at Khajjiar and pine forests of Dalhousie. See our Dharamshala guide.
- All three in one trip, 8–9 days: Incredible Himachal from Delhi. More driving, but you see the three faces of the state.
- Old villages, apple orchards and the Kinnaur Kailash: Eccentric Kinnaur. Sarahan’s Bhimakali temple, Sangla and Chitkul at the end of the Baspa Valley, and Kalpa facing the 6,050 m Kinnaur Kailash.
- High-altitude desert, monasteries, Chandratal: the Kinnaur–Kaza circuit in summer, or winter Spiti from December for frozen rivers, snow leopard country and a very different trip. Our Spiti guide for international travellers explains altitude, permits and what to expect.
How do you reach Himachal from Delhi or abroad?
Delhi is the international gateway. From there, your package starts either in Delhi itself or in Chandigarh, 250 km north, which is the usual road entry to the hills.
| Leg | Options | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi to Chandigarh | Shatabdi or Vande Bharat train; private car; 1-hour flight | About 3 h by train, 5 h by road | Chandigarh-start packages save a day of driving; see our Chandigarh guide |
| Delhi to Shimla | Private car; Alliance Air flight 6x weekly since May 2026; toy train from Dharampur | 7–8 h by road; about 1 h by air | Kalka–Shimla toy train runs Dharampur–Shimla only until 30 Nov 2026; see our Delhi to Shimla guide |
| Delhi to Manali | Private car; flight to Bhuntar (Kullu) then 50 km by road | 12–14 h by road, often split at Chandigarh | Bhuntar flights are weather-dependent; see our Delhi to Manali guide |
| Delhi to Dharamshala | Private car; flight to Gaggal (Kangra), 15 km away | 10–11 h by road; about 1 h 20 m by air | Gaggal flights also weather-dependent in winter |
| Shimla to Kaza (winter) | Private 4×4 via Rampur, Kalpa, Nako, Tabo | 2 driving days each way | Only route into Spiti from mid-October to about June |
In our experience the best plan for an international arrival is a night in Delhi to sleep off the flight, then the morning train to Chandigarh or a car straight up to Shimla. Add a day at the end for the drive back to Delhi; mountain roads do not keep airline schedules.
What is the road and pass situation right now?
As of 30 October 2026, the Manali–Leh highway is closed for the winter at Darcha–Sarchu and the Manali–Kaza road is closed between Gramphu and Batal; both shut on 15 October 2026 after the season’s early snow. Rohtang Pass is closed on Tuesdays throughout the year and shuts fully for winter; summer permits are issued at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in and we arrange them for our guests. The Atal Tunnel stays open year-round apart from short snow closures, which is why winter Manali packages still reach Sissu in Lahaul. Our Rohtang permit and road status page is updated through the season, and our winter Spiti guide covers the Shimla-side road in detail.
Which months suit which package?
- November to mid-December: clear skies, cold nights, few crowds and off-season prices. Good for Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Kinnaur as far as Kalpa. Our Manali in November and Shimla in November pages have the detail.
- Late December to February: snow in Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie, peak prices over Christmas and New Year, and winter Spiti for the adventurous. See Manali in January.
- March to June: spring blossom, then the warm pre-monsoon season when Indian families fill Manali in May and June. Rohtang usually opens in May.
- June to mid-October: the only window for the full Kinnaur–Kaza–Chandratal circuit. July and August bring monsoon rain to Shimla and Manali but Spiti stays mostly dry.
- October: the Kullu Dussehra festival, clear skies and autumn colours; the best all-round month in our view. Our best month to visit Himachal guide compares them all.

Send us your dates, arrival city, group size and hotel preference. We reply within a working day with a day-by-day plan and a dollar price. A 20% token confirms the package; cancel within 48 hours of paying and we refund it in full. After that the advance is non-refundable, but you can change your dates once within six months. The balance is due before the trip. The terms are on our payment page and cancellation policy. Before you arrive you receive hotel vouchers, the driver’s name and number, and a WhatsApp line to our office.
What should international travellers know before a Himachal trip?
Altitude is the main thing. Shimla (2,200 m), Manali (2,050 m) and Dharamshala (1,450 m) need no acclimatisation. Kalpa (2,960 m) is fine for most people. Kaza (3,650 m), Chandratal (4,250 m) and the Kunzum Pass (4,550 m) are high enough to cause altitude sickness, which is why our Spiti circuits climb gradually from the Shimla side rather than jumping straight up from Manali. Read our altitude sickness guide and check your travel insurance covers the heights you will sleep at.
Roads are narrow and winding; a six-hour drive covers about 200 km. Motion-sickness tablets help. Mobile coverage is good in the towns and patchy beyond Kalpa; our drivers carry local SIMs. Hotels in the hills rarely have central heating, so pack a warm layer even in October. Our Himachal Pradesh guide for international travellers and India packing list cover the rest.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Himachal Pradesh tour package cost for foreigners?
Our published packages run from ₹12,499 (about US$132) per person for 5 nights in Shimla and Manali from Chandigarh to ₹32,500 (about US$342) for the Kinnaur–Kaza circuit with Chandratal, land only, in Deluxe hotels, at off-season rates. Peak season (20 December to 5 January and from 15 March) is about 25% more. Foreign and Indian guests pay the same package price.
Do foreigners need a permit for Himachal Pradesh?
No permit is needed for Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Kinnaur as far as Kalpa, or Spiti. Rohtang Pass needs a vehicle permit in summer, which we obtain online. Foreign nationals do need an Inner Line Permit for the short stretch of the Hindustan–Tibet road between Kinnaur and Spiti, issued in Reckong Peo or Shimla; we arrange it when the route needs it.
Can I visit Spiti Valley in winter?
Yes, from the Shimla side. The Manali–Kaza road closed on 15 October 2026 and stays shut until about June, so our winter Spiti package runs Shimla–Kalpa–Kaza–Shimla from December to March. Expect night temperatures well below freezing, basic heated homestays in Kaza, frozen waterfalls and a chance of snow leopard sightings. It suits travellers who are comfortable with cold and altitude.
Which is better for a first visit: Shimla–Manali or Dharamshala–Dalhousie?
Shimla–Manali gives colonial history, the Kullu Valley, snow activities at Solang and the Atal Tunnel, and it is the easier drive from Chandigarh. Dharamshala–Dalhousie gives Tibetan culture around the Dalai Lama’s residence, quieter forests and the Khajjiar meadow. With 8–9 days, the Incredible Himachal route covers both sides.
How many days are enough for Himachal?
Five to six days covers Shimla and Manali comfortably. Eight to nine days adds Dharamshala. Ten to twelve days allows the Kinnaur–Spiti circuit in summer, or Shimla, Manali and a side trip to Jibhi or Tirthan. Because mountain driving is slow, we plan no more than one 6–7 hour drive between stops.
Are the hotels in the package suitable for Western travellers?
The Deluxe category means clean, mid-range hotels with en-suite bathrooms, hot water, Wi-Fi and breakfast, chosen for location and reliability rather than luxury. Heritage properties, boutique stays and five-star resorts exist in Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala and we quote them on request. We name every hotel in the plan before you pay.
