Short answer: Manali is about 540 km north of Delhi and there is no train or motorway all the way. International visitors usually choose between the overnight Volvo bus (12–14 hours, cheapest), a private car with driver (10–12 hours, most flexible), the morning Shatabdi train to Chandigarh plus a 6–7 hour drive, or a short Alliance Air flight to Kullu, 52 km from Manali, which cancels in bad weather.
Quick answer
- Overnight bus: HRTC and private Volvos leave Delhi (ISBT Kashmere Gate, Majnu ka Tilla) around 17:00–19:00 and reach Manali about 06:00–08:00. Non-AC seats from roughly ₹900 (about US$9); AC Volvo seats roughly ₹1,500–1,800 (about US$16–19), October 2026 listings.
- Private car with driver: 10–12 hours with stops, door to door, leave at dawn or split the drive with a night in Chandigarh or Kasauli. Best for families, luggage and first-time visitors.
- Train + car: 12011 Kalka Shatabdi, New Delhi 07:40 → Chandigarh 10:59, then 6–7 hours by road to Manali (see our Chandigarh to Manali taxi fares).
- Flight: Alliance Air ATR turboprop, Delhi → Kullu (Bhuntar) in about 1 h 20 min, a few days a week; fares roughly ₹7,700–24,400 (about US$80–260). Weather cancellations are common, so never put it on the day of an international connection.
Rates: ₹94.96 per US$ (ECB reference, 16 October 2026). All fares are approximate and change with season.

How far is Manali from Delhi, and how long does it really take?
Delhi to Manali is roughly 540 km by road: about 250 km of flat four-lane highway to Chandigarh, then the hill highway (NH-205/NH-3) through Kiratpur, Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi and Kullu. The National Highways Authority of India has been four-laning the Kiratpur–Manali stretch for years; the Tribune reported in July 2022 that the project would shorten that section from 232 km to 194 km and cut nearly three hours, and the Kiratpur–Sundernagar four-lane opened in late 2023. The Mandi–Pandoh–Aut section is still a mix of tunnels, two-lane road and construction, which is why journey times vary so much.
Realistic timings in October 2026: a bus takes 12–14 hours (HRTC’s own listings for 18 October show 13 h 30 min to 16 h 30 min depending on the route), a private car 10–12 hours including meal stops, and a car from Chandigarh 6–7 hours. The last 40 km from Kullu to Manali runs along the Beas river and is the slowest part in holiday traffic. Add two hours in the monsoon (July–September) for landslide stops, and allow for dense fog on the Delhi–Chandigarh plains in late December and January, which delays trains and buses alike.
Option 1: the overnight Volvo bus — what it is actually like
“Volvo” is the local shorthand for an air-conditioned long-distance coach, whatever the make. Two kinds run Delhi–Manali: the state-run HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation; its AC coaches are branded Himsuta) and dozens of private operators. HRTC services leave from ISBT Kashmere Gate, the main interstate terminal in north Delhi, which has its own metro station. Most private coaches board at Majnu ka Tilla (the Tibetan colony, 10 minutes further north) or at points along the Ring Road, and the pick-up is often a feeder van, not the coach itself. Check the exact boarding point on your ticket and reach it 30 minutes early.
A typical timetable: depart Delhi 17:00–19:00, dinner stop at a highway restaurant near Karnal or Ambala, a toilet stop around Mandi, arrive Manali 06:00–08:00. HRTC’s 586 service, for example, is listed leaving Delhi at 17:40 and arriving 07:10. Seats recline but these are not lie-flat sleepers on most services; sleeper buses with berths exist on the private side. The hill section from Bilaspur onwards is winding, so take motion-sickness tablets before Mandi if you are prone to it, keep a jacket (the AC is set cold) and pack a small bag for the night because large luggage goes in the hold.
Booking: HRTC sells tickets on its own website and app and through Indian booking sites such as redBus and AbhiBus. These sites normally send a one-time code to an Indian mobile number and some foreign cards are declined, so if you have not yet bought an Indian SIM, ask your hotel or tour operator to book for you, or buy at the HRTC counter at Kashmere Gate a day or two ahead. AC Volvo seats on popular dates (Diwali week, Christmas–New Year, May–June) sell out five to seven days in advance. Carry your passport; the ticket carries your name and the conductor may check it.
In Manali the coaches stop at the Volvo stand on the Mall Road side of town, a short taxi ride (or a walk) from most hotels in Old Manali and Vashisht. Hotel check-in is usually from noon, so email ahead and ask for an early check-in or a room to leave bags in.
Option 2: a private car with driver
This is how most of our international guests travel, and for a group of two to six people it is often the cheapest option per person once you count the Manali sightseeing days as well. A sedan, SUV or Innova with an English-speaking driver picks you up at your Delhi hotel or the airport, and the same car and driver stay with you for the whole trip, which removes every transfer, ticket and SIM-card problem on this list. You can stop at a dhaba (a roadside restaurant) for a proper lunch, photograph the Pandoh dam and the Beas gorge, and get out whenever you like.
Two ways to do it. In one day: leave Delhi by 05:00–06:00, reach Chandigarh by 09:30, lunch at Bilaspur or Sundernagar, and arrive in Manali by 17:00–18:00 — long, but you arrive rested compared with a bus night. In two days: drive to Chandigarh (a planned city designed by Le Corbusier, worth an afternoon) or the small hill station of Kasauli, sleep, and do the 6–7 hour hill section fresh the next morning. The two-day version is what we recommend for families with young children and for anyone who has just landed after a long-haul flight.
What it costs depends on the car and whether it is a one-way transfer or a multi-day hire. Our Delhi to Manali taxi page lists the current one-way fares in rupees; for a full itinerary with the same driver throughout, the private driver page explains what is included and how a quote works. The vehicle matters on this road — a sedan is fine in summer, but an SUV is the better choice from December to March when the last stretch can be icy.
Option 3: train to Chandigarh, then car
There is no railway to Manali. The practical rail option is the daily 12011 Kalka Shatabdi, which leaves New Delhi station at 07:40 and reaches Chandigarh at 10:59 (266 km, chair car and executive chair car, meals included), after which a pre-booked car does the 6–7 hour hill drive. You arrive in Manali around 18:00 having seen the plains from a comfortable seat instead of a car. Indian Railways tickets can be booked on IRCTC with a foreign passport; the site has an option for international users, and a foreign tourist quota exists on many trains, but registration takes a few steps, so do it before you travel. Chandigarh’s other rail link is the narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla toy train, which is a separate trip and does not go anywhere near Manali.
Option 4: flying to Kullu (Bhuntar)
Kullu–Manali Airport (IATA code KUU) sits at 1,089 m in the Beas valley near Bhuntar, 11 km from Kullu town and 52 km (about 1.5 hours by road) from Manali. Its 1,125 m runway only takes small turboprops, and as of 2024–26 Alliance Air is the only airline using it, with ATR-42 aircraft from Delhi, plus seasonal links to Dehradun, Jaipur and Amritsar. In May 2026 the Tribune reported the Delhi–Kullu flight running five days a week for the summer season with fares on the route between about ₹17,000 and ₹24,400; by October 2026 flight-search sites showed two direct departures a week, about 1 h 20 min in the air, from roughly ₹7,700. Check the current schedule on the airline’s site before you rely on it.
The catch is reliability. The approach is through a narrow valley and the airport has no instrument landing system, so flights are cancelled or turned back whenever cloud or visibility is poor — common in the monsoon and on winter mornings. Treat the flight as a bonus, not a plan: book it for the outbound leg if you like, but take the road back to Delhi, and never schedule it within a day of your international departure.
Comparison: Delhi to Manali for international travellers
| Option | Time | Approx. cost per person | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HRTC / private AC Volvo | 12–14 h overnight | ₹1,500–1,800 (about US$16–19) | Solo travellers, backpackers, tight budgets | OTP/card booking hurdles, motion sickness, 06:00 arrival before check-in |
| Private car with driver | 10–12 h, or 2 days via Chandigarh | Quoted per car; see the taxi page | Couples, families, groups of 3–6, first visits | Long day if done in one go; choose an SUV in winter |
| Shatabdi train + car | 3 h 20 min + 6–7 h | Train fare + car from Chandigarh | Rail fans, anyone avoiding the plains drive | IRCTC registration for foreigners; winter fog delays |
| Flight to Kullu + 1.5 h car | 1 h 20 min + 1.5 h | ₹7,700–24,400 (about US$80–260) | Short trips, those who cannot sit 12 hours | Weather cancellations, few flights a week, no onward buffer |
Which option should you pick?
Backpacking alone on a budget: the HRTC Volvo. It is safe, cheap and used by thousands of Indian travellers every week; book a seat near the front for a smoother ride. A couple on a two-week North India trip: a private car, ideally continuing on to Dharamshala or Shimla so the same driver handles the mountain roads throughout. A family with children or older parents: private car in two days via Chandigarh — nobody enjoys a 13-hour night on a hill road. Only four or five days in India: fly up if the schedule fits and drive back, which gives you the mountain scenery once and saves a night.
Whatever you choose, plan Manali for at least three nights. Day one is recovery and the town (Hadimba temple, Old Manali, the Mall), day two is Solang valley and the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, day three is Naggar or a short walk — and if you are coming for snow, read our month guide to Manali in January before fixing dates.
Road conditions by season
October to mid-December and March to June are the easy months: dry roads, clear skies, 10–12 hours by car. Late December to February: the Delhi–Manali road itself stays open through winter (Manali town is at about 2,050 m), but fog on the plains can add two to three hours to any morning departure, and after a snowfall the last kilometres to Old Manali or Solang may be slushy — an SUV or 4×4 helps. July to mid-September is the monsoon: the Mandi–Pandoh–Aut gorge is landslide-prone and the road has closed for hours or days after heavy rain (the July 2023 floods washed away parts of the highway). Travel by day, not by night bus, in those months and keep a buffer day before any flight home. Rohtang Pass and the Leh road beyond Manali are a separate matter and close with snow from about mid-November to May; the Atal Tunnel keeps Lahaul reachable in most weather.
What this means for your trip
If Manali is one stop on a longer India itinerary, treat the Delhi–Manali leg as a full travel day in either direction and do not try to fit anything else into it. The bus suits a solo traveller with time; a private car suits almost everyone else and makes the rest of Himachal (Dharamshala, Shimla, Kinnaur, Spiti in season) easy to add. Suzu Travels has run Himachal trips since 2019 and is registered in Mandi district, halfway along this very road, so we know which stretch is being dug up this month and where the driver should stop for lunch.

Frequently asked questions
Is the overnight bus from Delhi to Manali safe for foreigners?
Yes. HRTC and the established private operators run this route nightly and it is one of the busiest tourist bus corridors in India. Keep valuables in a small bag at your seat, note the bus number and your boarding point, and prefer HRTC or a well-reviewed operator over the cheapest ticket touts at Majnu ka Tilla.
Can I book an HRTC or redBus ticket with a foreign card and phone number?
Often, but not always: Indian booking sites send a one-time code to a mobile number, and some foreign cards are declined. If you do not have an Indian SIM yet, ask your hotel or operator to book, or buy at the ISBT Kashmere Gate counter a day or two ahead. Carry your passport when you board.
Is there a train from Delhi to Manali?
No. The nearest broad-gauge station is Chandigarh, 266 km from Delhi on the 12011 Kalka Shatabdi (07:40–10:59), and from there it is a 6–7 hour drive. The toy train from Kalka goes to Shimla, not towards Manali.
How reliable are flights to Kullu-Manali airport?
Not reliable enough to depend on. The airport sits in a narrow valley, only Alliance Air’s small turboprops use it, there are only a few flights a week, and cloud or poor visibility cancels them regularly, especially in the monsoon and on winter mornings. Fly one way if it suits you and keep the road as the plan for the other.
Should I stop overnight on the way?
If you are travelling by car with children, older travellers or straight off a long-haul flight, yes: sleep in Chandigarh or Kasauli and do the hill section the next morning. Fit adults doing a single long day should leave Delhi by 06:00 to arrive before dark.
Does snow close the Delhi to Manali road in winter?
Rarely. The road to Manali town stays open through winter; it is Rohtang Pass and the Leh road beyond Manali that close from roughly mid-November to May. Winter delays on the Delhi side come from fog, not snow, so allow extra time for December and January departures.
