Short answer: Shimla is about 350–370 km north of Delhi, roughly 8–10 hours by road. International visitors usually choose the 07:40 Shatabdi train to Kalka or Chandigarh and then a 3–4 hour drive up, a private car with driver door to door, or an HRTC Volvo bus. Until at least 30 November 2026 the famous toy train runs only from Dharampur, not Kalka.
Quick answer
- Train + car (most popular): 12011 Kalka Shatabdi, daily, New Delhi 07:40 → Chandigarh 10:59 → Kalka 11:40; then about 3–4 hours by road to Shimla. You arrive mid-afternoon.
- Private car with driver: 8–10 hours with stops, hotel to hotel. Easiest with luggage, children or straight off a long-haul flight.
- HRTC Volvo bus: about 9–11 hours, AC seats from roughly ₹1,100 (about US$12), ordinary buses from about ₹540 (about US$6) — booking-site listings for 19 October 2026.
- Toy train: the UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla line is cut between Kalka and Dharampur until 30 November 2026; one train a day each way runs Dharampur–Shimla.
- Flight: Alliance Air flies small ATR turboprops Delhi–Shimla (resumed May 2026); the airport is 22 km from town and weather-sensitive.
Rate used: ₹94.96 per US$ (ECB reference, 16 October 2026). Fares are approximate and change with season.

How far is Shimla from Delhi, and what is the route?
Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh and the British summer capital of India, sits at about 2,200 m on a ridge in the lower Himalaya. From central Delhi it is roughly 350–370 km by road, depending on where you start. The first 250 km or so is the flat, fast NH-44 through Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal and Ambala to Chandigarh; the last 110–115 km is NH-5, a four-lane hill highway that climbs from Kalka and Parwanoo through Dharampur, Solan and Shoghi to Shimla.
That split is why almost every option on this page is really two journeys: plains to the foot of the hills (Chandigarh or Kalka), then the climb. The plains half is quick by train. The hill half is only by road — or, when it is fully running, by the narrow-gauge toy train from Kalka, which covers 96 km in about five to six hours because it is built for views, not speed.
Option 1: Shatabdi train to Kalka, then a car — the one we recommend
The 12011 Kalka Shatabdi runs every day from New Delhi station (NDLS, the big station near Connaught Place) at 07:40, reaches Chandigarh at 10:59 and terminates at Kalka at 11:40. It has two classes, both air-conditioned: CC (chair car, two-plus-three seating) and EC (executive chair car, two-plus-two, wider seats). Breakfast is served at your seat and is normally included in the fare. The return, 12012, comes down in the evening.
From Kalka, a pre-booked car takes about three to four hours to Shimla in normal traffic. From Chandigarh, add 30–45 minutes. With a car waiting on the platform side you are in your Shimla hotel by 15:30–16:00, have seen the plains from a comfortable seat, and have avoided the Delhi traffic on the way out. It is also the safest choice in winter fog season (late December to January), when the train may run late but you are not on a foggy highway at dawn.
Booking as a foreigner: Indian Railways tickets are sold on IRCTC (irctc.co.in). International users can register with a foreign passport and email, and a foreign tourist quota exists on many trains, but registration takes a few steps — do it before you fly. Shatabdi seats on Fridays, long weekends and Christmas week go early, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. If registration defeats you, your hotel or operator can book on your behalf with your passport details.

What about the Kalka–Shimla toy train in 2026?
The toy train is the reason many international visitors choose Shimla at all: a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge railway opened in 1903, with 102 tunnels, around 800 bridges and 919 curves (figures PTI cited on 14 October 2026). This year, though, it is only partly running.
Heavy rain on 29 August 2026 washed away the ground under the track near Bridge No. 57, between Taksal and Gumman, in the lower section. Northern Railway’s order of 30 September cancels the regular Kalka–Shimla trains until 30 November 2026. As of PTI’s 14 October report, a single train runs each way between Dharampur and Shimla, and it fills up. We found no restoration announcement by 19 October. The details, train numbers and sources are in our Kalka–Shimla toy train status update.
What that means for a visitor: you can still ride the best part of the line — Barog with its long tunnel, Solan, Kandaghat, Shoghi and Summer Hill — by driving from Kalka to Dharampur (about 40 minutes up NH-5) and boarding there. The trick is to send the car on to Shimla with your luggage and have it meet you at the station. Book the train ticket as early as IRCTC allows and keep the car as your fallback if there is no seat.
For December and New Year trips, the 30 November date is the end of the cancellation, not a promised reopening. Treat the full ride from Kalka as a bonus until Northern Railway confirms it.
Option 2: a private car with driver from Delhi
For two to six people this is the simplest way, and often not much more expensive per head than train plus taxi once you add the car you will need in Shimla anyway. An English-speaking driver collects you at your Delhi hotel or at the airport, and — if you book a multi-day trip — the same car and driver stay with you for Kufri, Narkanda, Manali or Dharamshala afterwards.
Leave Delhi by 06:00 to beat the city traffic. A typical day: breakfast at one of the big highway dhabas (roadside restaurants) near Murthal or Karnal, Chandigarh by 10:30, lunch at Dharampur or Solan, Shimla by 15:00–16:00. It is a long but easy day on good roads. If you have just landed after an overnight flight, or are travelling with children or older parents, split it: sleep in Chandigarh or the small cantonment hill town of Kasauli, then do the climb fresh the next morning.
One-way fares by car type are on our Delhi to Shimla taxi page; for a full itinerary with the same driver throughout, the private driver page explains what a quote includes.
Option 3: the HRTC Volvo bus
“Volvo” is Indian shorthand for an air-conditioned long-distance coach. The state-run HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation; its AC coaches are branded Himsuta) runs Delhi–Shimla buses through the day and night, mainly from ISBT Kashmere Gate, Delhi’s interstate bus terminal, which has its own metro station. Booking-site listings for 19 October 2026 show the fastest service at about 8 h 50 min and most at 9 h 50 min to 11 hours, with AC Volvo seats around ₹1,092–1,117 (about US$12) and ordinary non-AC seats from about ₹540 (about US$6). Private operators run similar coaches from Majnu ka Tilla and other pick-up points.
The bus is fine for solo travellers and backpackers. Two practical points: Indian booking sites (HRTC’s own site, redBus, AbhiBus) usually send a one-time code to an Indian mobile number and sometimes decline foreign cards, so buy at the Kashmere Gate counter a day or two ahead if that happens; and an overnight bus reaches Shimla at dawn, hours before hotel check-in. Daytime departures are more pleasant — you see the hills, and you arrive in daylight. Shimla’s main bus stand (ISBT Tutikandi) is below the town; the old centre around the Mall and the Ridge is mostly closed to cars, so expect a short taxi ride and a walk, or the passenger lift, to your hotel.
Option 4: flying to Shimla — or to Chandigarh
Shimla Airport (code SLV) is at Jubbarhatti, 22 km from town, at 1,546 m with a short 1,230 m runway. Only small turboprops can use it. Alliance Air resumed Delhi–Shimla flights on 10 May 2026 with ATR-42 aircraft, six times a week at the time (ch-aviation, 18 May 2026), plus a Shimla–Dharamshala hop. The service has stopped and restarted several times over the years, and low cloud or poor visibility cancels flights, so check the current schedule on the airline’s site and never place it within a day of your international flight home.
A more reliable shortcut is a flight to Chandigarh (IXC), which has many daily jet services from Delhi, Mumbai and other cities, then three to four hours by car up NH-5.

Which option should you choose?
First visit, two of you, a few days in Shimla: Shatabdi to Kalka and a car up — or the car to Dharampur and the toy train if you can get seats. A family, or a longer Himachal loop: a private car with the same driver for the whole trip; Shimla to Manali is a full extra day, and our sample India in two weeks itinerary shows how Shimla fits after the Golden Triangle. Backpacking solo: a daytime HRTC Volvo. Only a weekend: fly to Chandigarh and drive.
Plan at least two nights in Shimla: one day for the Ridge, the Mall, Christ Church, Jakhu temple and the Viceregal Lodge at Summer Hill, and one for a drive to Kufri, Chail or Narkanda. If you are coming for snow, read Shimla in December first — snow in town is possible but not guaranteed.
Road conditions by season
October to mid-December and March to June are the easy months: dry roads and clear views. Late December to February: NH-5 to Shimla stays open in winter, but fog on the plains slows morning trains and cars, and after a snowfall the last stretch near Shoghi and the roads to Kufri and Narkanda can be icy for a day or two — allow a buffer. July to mid-September is the monsoon: landslides can close the hill section for hours, and the 2026 toy-train damage came from exactly this. Travel by day in those months.
What this means for your trip
Treat Delhi to Shimla as a full travel day, and for October–November 2026 build it without relying on the toy train from Kalka. The Shatabdi-plus-car combination works in every season, and a private car makes it easy to carry on to Manali, Kinnaur or Dharamshala. Suzu Travels has run Himachal trips since 2019 from Mandi district and can set up the platform pick-up at Kalka, the Dharampur drop for the train, and the car waiting in Shimla.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct train from Delhi to Shimla?
No. Broad-gauge trains from Delhi stop at Kalka, at the foot of the hills. The 12011 Kalka Shatabdi leaves New Delhi daily at 07:40 and reaches Kalka at 11:40. From Kalka you continue by road (three to four hours) or, when it is fully running, by the narrow-gauge toy train to Shimla.
Is the Kalka–Shimla toy train running in October and November 2026?
Only partly. Northern Railway cancelled the Kalka–Dharampur section until 30 November 2026 after monsoon damage near Gumman. As of 14 October 2026, one train runs each way between Dharampur and Shimla. Drive to Dharampur to board, book early on IRCTC, and confirm on NTES or 139 the day before.
How long does it take to drive from Delhi to Shimla?
About 8–10 hours for 350–370 km, including breakfast and lunch stops. Leave by 06:00 to clear Delhi traffic and arrive in daylight. With children or after a long-haul flight, break the journey with a night in Chandigarh or Kasauli.
Can foreigners book Indian train and bus tickets online?
Usually, with some effort. IRCTC lets international users register with a passport, and a foreign tourist quota exists on many trains. Bus booking sites often need an Indian mobile number for a one-time code and may decline foreign cards. If either fails, a hotel, a station or bus-stand counter, or your operator can book for you.
Is it worth flying to Shimla?
Only if the schedule suits and you have slack. Alliance Air’s small turboprops land at Jubbarhatti, 22 km from town, and low cloud cancels flights. Flying to Chandigarh and driving three to four hours is the more reliable shortcut.
Can I combine Shimla and Manali in one trip?
Yes, it is the classic Himachal loop. Shimla to Manali is a full day by road (no train), so allow at least five or six nights in total. A private car with one driver for the whole loop is the easiest way; see our guide to Delhi to Manali for international travellers for the return leg.
