Short answer: Manali is a hill town at about 2,050 m in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, roughly 540 km north of Delhi. It is the easiest base in the Indian Himalaya for snow, trekking and a first look at mountain village life. International visitors usually arrive by overnight Volvo bus or private car from Delhi or Chandigarh (12–14 hours), stay in Old Manali or Vashisht, and use day trips to Solang Valley, the Atal Tunnel and Naggar. October–November and March–June are the comfortable months; December–February is for snow.

Where is Manali and why do international travellers go there?
Manali sits at the top end of the Kullu Valley, where the Beas river comes down from the Rohtang and Hampta passes. The town itself is at roughly 2,050 m; the valley sides rise to 4,000 m peaks that hold snow until June, and the Pir Panjal range behind it is crossed by the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul. Our office is in Bilaspur, about four hours down the valley, and our drivers run this road every week of the year.
For visitors from the UK, Europe, North America and Australia, Manali does three jobs. It is the most accessible place in the Indian Himalaya to see and touch snow between December and March. It is the trailhead for well-organised treks such as Hampta Pass and Beas Kund. And it is the starting point, from June to mid-October, for the drive to Leh and Ladakh. If you only have a week in north India and want mountains, Manali is the simplest answer.
It is also busy: Mall Road in May, June and over Christmas and New Year is crowded, and the sections below explain how to stay in the quieter corners. For the wider region, read our Himachal Pradesh guide for international travellers.
How do you get to Manali from Delhi or Chandigarh?
There is no railway to Manali and the airport at Bhuntar is small and weather-dependent, so almost everyone arrives by road.
| Option | Time (checked 30 Oct 2026) | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car with driver from Delhi | 12–14 h; most guests break the trip in Chandigarh or Mandi | Couples, families, luggage, stopping at your own pace | Road works and traffic near Mandi and the Kullu bypass |
| HRTC Volvo bus from Delhi (Kashmere Gate ISBT) | About 13–14 h overnight, several departures each evening | Budget travellers, solo backpackers | Book online a few days ahead; arrive early morning |
| Private car from Chandigarh | 7–9 h for about 300 km | Anyone flying into Chandigarh | Start by 07:00 to reach Manali in daylight |
| Flight to Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali airport) | Alliance Air from Delhi on selected days (07:20 departure Mon/Wed/Fri in the May 2026 timetable, Tribune 9 May 2026); then 50 km, 1.5–2 h by road | Short trips when seats and weather cooperate | Frequent weather cancellations; fares often ₹17,000–24,000 (US$180–255) |
| Via Shimla (2–3 night stop) | Delhi–Shimla 8–9 h, Shimla–Manali 7–8 h | First-time visitors who want two hill towns | The Shimla–Manali road is slow but scenic |
We have written detailed route guides for each leg: Delhi to Manali for international travellers, Chandigarh to Manali and Shimla to Manali. The flight situation changes every season, so read our Kullu–Manali airport guide before you count on it. In our experience, a car with a driver that leaves Delhi before 06:00 and stops for lunch in Mandi is the least tiring way in.
Which part of Manali should you stay in?
Manali is really four or five places, and the choice shapes your trip.
- Old Manali, across the Manalsu stream on the north-west side, is where most international visitors stay. It has guesthouses, cafes with Israeli, Italian and Tibetan menus, apple orchards and the 16th-century Manu Temple at the top of the lane. It is 15–20 minutes on foot from Mall Road. Our separate Old Manali guide covers cafes and stays.
- Vashisht, 3 km north-east on the far bank of the Beas, is a stone-and-wood village around a hot-spring temple. The public baths are free and separated by gender. Rooms here are cheaper and views across the valley are better than in town.
- Mall Road and Model Town are the commercial centre: hotels of every grade, the bus stand, ATMs, and the crowds. Convenient for one night, less restful for five.
- Prini, Aleo and the Naggar road south of town have the larger resort-style hotels with gardens and river views, used by families and honeymoon couples.
- Naggar, 20 km south, is for travellers who want a quiet village base with the castle and art gallery on the doorstep.
Our packages use Deluxe-grade hotels in Manali town or on the Naggar road, and we can swap to an Old Manali guesthouse or a Vashisht homestay if you prefer the backpacker side of town. Tell us at the planning stage.
What are the main sights in and around Manali?
You can cover the town sights in a day on foot and the valley sights in two days by car.
- Hadimba Devi Temple: a pagoda-roofed wooden temple set in a deodar grove about 2 km from Mall Road, dating from the mid-1500s. Open roughly 08:00–18:00, no entry fee (temple listings checked 30 Oct 2026). Go before 09:00 to avoid the coach groups.
- Vashisht hot springs and temple: free public baths; bring a towel and modest swimwear. Early morning is cleanest.
- Naggar Castle: a 15th-century timber-and-stone castle of the Kullu rajas, now a heritage hotel with a small entry fee of about ₹30; open about 09:00–18:00 (listings checked 30 Oct 2026). The Roerich Art Gallery, 1 km up the hill, shows the Himalayan paintings of the Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. We cover both in the Kullu Valley guide.
- Solang Valley: 13 km north, the ski and paragliding ground, with a gondola to Fatru at about 3,200 m. See our Solang Valley guide.
- Atal Tunnel and Sissu: the 9 km tunnel under the Rohtang ridge, open year-round with snow closures, puts Lahaul’s Sissu village within about 1.5 hours. Our Atal Tunnel and Sissu snow trip page explains the day.
- Rohtang Pass (3,978 m): open roughly May–October, closed on Tuesdays, permit required. Check our Rohtang permit and road status page for this week’s position.
When is the best time for an international visitor to go to Manali?
There is no bad month, but the months suit different trips. Indian school holidays (May–June, late December) are the crowded periods; western holidays over Christmas coincide with snow and high prices.
| Months | Typical weather in town | What works | What does not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-Mar–Apr | 10–20°C days, cold nights, snow still on Solang slopes early on | Walks, orchards in blossom, Sissu snow via the tunnel | Rohtang and high treks still shut |
| May–Jun | 15–25°C, sunny, peak Indian season | Rohtang opens, rafting, paragliding, Leh road from June | Crowds and hotel prices (+25% peak rate from 15 March) |
| Jul–Aug | Monsoon, 15–22°C, heavy rain in spells | Low prices, green valley | Landslides and road closures; we do not recommend it for first visits |
| Mid-Sep–Nov | 10–22°C, clear skies, apple harvest | Treks (Hampta, Beas Kund), Kullu Dussehra in October, photography | Nights drop near 0°C by November |
| Dec–Feb | -5 to 10°C, snow in town some years, always at Solang and Sissu | Skiing, snow play, quiet Old Manali | Rohtang closed; Leh and Spiti roads via Manali closed |
Our best time to visit Himachal page compares Manali with Shimla, Dharamshala and Spiti, and the month-by-month Manali guide goes into weather and snow in detail. If snow is the point of the trip, our snow activities in Manali page lists what is possible in each winter month.
What can you do beyond sightseeing: treks, snow and the road north?
Trekking. The two classic short treks are Hampta Pass (4–5 days, crossing into Lahaul at about 4,270 m, June–September) and Beas Kund (2–3 days to the source of the Beas, May–October). Both start within an hour of town and are run by registered operators with guides, cooks and tents.
Snow and skiing. From late December to February, Solang Valley has beginner ski slopes, sledging and a gondola, and there is organised snow play at Sissu beyond the tunnel. Serious skiers go to Gulmarg in Kashmir instead; see skiing in Himachal for an honest comparison.
Rafting and paragliding. Rafting runs on the Beas near Pirdi, south of Kullu, from about March to June and again mid-September to November. Paragliding operates at Solang in the same windows. Prices and operators are on our adventure activities in Manali page.
The road to Leh. The Manali–Leh highway is usually open from early June to mid-October. Since 15 October 2026 it has been shut at Darcha–Sarchu for winter, so for a 2027 trip plan on June onwards. Our Manali to Leh guide for international travellers covers passes, acclimatisation and the two-day drive.
Side valleys. If you have extra days, the Parvati Valley (Kasol, Manikaran, Tosh) is 1.5–2 hours away and the Tirthan Valley and Jibhi are about 3 hours. Both are covered in our Parvati Valley guide and Jibhi and Tirthan itinerary.
How much does Manali cost for an international visitor?
Manali is inexpensive by European standards. A guesthouse room in Old Manali with a private bathroom is typically ₹1,200–2,500 (US$13–26) a night outside peak weeks; a Deluxe-grade hotel used in our packages is ₹3,000–6,000 (US$32–63); the handful of upmarket resorts on the Naggar road and in Prini run higher. A cafe meal is ₹300–600 (US$3–6), a local taxi to Solang and back about ₹1,500–2,500 (US$16–26) depending on the vehicle, and the Solang gondola, ski hire and paragliding are priced per activity on the day.
Our Manali tour package from Delhi is 4 nights/5 days from ₹14,999 (about US$158) per person on the Deluxe tier in the off-season band (1 November–19 December and 6 January–14 March), with private transfers from Delhi, hotel with breakfast, and the Solang, Naggar and local sightseeing days included. Peak dates (20 December–5 January and from 15 March) are about 25% more. A 20% token confirms the booking, with a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of paying, and we take international cards through Razorpay and PayPal. Couples usually prefer the Kullu–Manali honeymoon package at ₹12,999 (about US$137) per person.
What practical things should international visitors know about Manali?
- Altitude: town is low enough that nobody needs acclimatisation. Rohtang (3,978 m) and Sissu (about 3,100 m) are day trips, so go up and come down the same day and drink water.
- Money: ATMs are on Mall Road and in Old Manali; most cafes and hotels take cards and UPI, but small shops, taxis and temple donations are cash. Carry ₹5,000–10,000 in small notes.
- Connectivity: Jio and Airtel work in town, Old Manali and Vashisht; signal fades towards Solang and is poor beyond the Atal Tunnel. Buy a SIM in Delhi, not Manali.
- Permits: none for Manali itself. Rohtang needs an online permit. Lahaul and Leh need nothing extra for foreigners on the main highway; Spiti via Kinnaur needs an Inner Line Permit, explained in our Spiti guide.
- Dress and conduct: cover shoulders and knees at temples, remove shoes, and do not photograph people in the Vashisht baths. Winter needs proper insulated boots; snow suits and boots can be hired, see snow suit and boots on rent.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Manali?
Three full days covers the town, Solang Valley and a day through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu or up to Rohtang in season. Add a fourth for Naggar and the Kullu Valley. If you want a trek such as Hampta Pass or Beas Kund, allow 7–8 days in total including the road journeys from Delhi.
Is Manali suitable for travellers who do not speak Hindi?
Yes. Hotel staff, cafe owners in Old Manali, trek guides and most taxi drivers who work with visitors speak functional English. Menus are in English. Our drivers who take international guests speak English, and we send a WhatsApp number for the trip so you can reach us during the day.
Can you see snow in Manali in October or November?
Not in town. Fresh snow falls at Rohtang most years from mid-October, and Sissu beyond the Atal Tunnel often has snow from November. Reliable snow in Manali itself and at Solang comes from late December to February. For a trip that is certain to be white, choose January.
Do foreigners need a permit for Manali or Rohtang?
No permit is needed for Manali, Solang, Naggar or the Atal Tunnel. Rohtang Pass needs a vehicle permit for everyone, issued online at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in, and the pass is closed on Tuesdays and through winter. Your driver or we arrange it the day before. Spiti via Kinnaur needs an Inner Line Permit for foreign nationals.
Is Manali safe for solo and female travellers?
Manali, Old Manali and Vashisht are among the easier places in India for solo travellers, with a long backpacker history and a relaxed village feel. Normal precautions apply: avoid walking the unlit road between Old Manali and town late at night, do not swim in the Beas, and keep away from the river during rain.
What is the difference between Manali and Shimla for a foreign visitor?
Shimla is a colonial-era town at 2,200 m with Victorian buildings, the toy train and an easy pace; Manali is a valley town with higher mountains, snow sports and trekking. Many international visitors do both over 5–6 nights, Shimla first, then the 7–8 hour drive to Manali. Our Shimla to Manali guide explains the route.
