Manali in January 2027: Snow, Weather, Roads and What to Expect

January is Manali’s coldest and snowiest month: about 10.5°C by day and −1°C at night, with 5–6 snow or rain days. Here is where the snow is, when the Atal Tunnel shuts, and how to plan around the Republic Day rush.

Short answer: January is Manali’s coldest and snowiest month, which makes it the best month to go if snow is the reason for the trip. India Meteorological Department (IMD) normals for 1991–2020 give Manali an average daytime high of about 10.5°C and a night-time low of about −1°C, with roughly 90 mm of rain and snow spread over five to six days. That is more than double December’s precipitation. Snow in town is likely at some point in the month but never certain. The real catch is access: after each heavy snowfall, the road to Solang and the Atal Tunnel can close for a day or more. The first five days of January are still peak season. From 6 January prices drop and the town goes quiet until the Republic Day weekend.

This guide covers what January in Manali is really like: the weather numbers, where the snow is, what happened in January 2026, which roads and sights stay open, and how we plan January trips so one snowfall doesn’t wreck the holiday. It is written by our team in Kullu–Manali and was last checked in October 2026.

Manali weather in January: the numbers

The table below sets January against the months either side. These are IMD’s long-term averages for the Manali station, at about 2,050 m. Solang, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu are higher and several degrees colder.

IMD normal (1991–2020) December January
Average day maximum 13.5°C 10.5°C
Average night minimum 0.3°C −1.1°C
Record low −10.0°C −11.6°C
Average precipitation 39 mm 90 mm
Average rainy/snowy days 2.2 5.6

The last two rows are the reason January is the snow month. Snow needs moisture as well as cold. In January, western disturbances arrive more often and carry more of it. A typical January brings two or three distinct spells, each lasting one to three days, with clear, freezing, bright days in between. Between spells you get blue skies, frost on every car and icy lanes in Old Manali, not constant snowfall.

What the days actually feel like

  • Mornings (7–10 am): below zero most days. Pipes freeze in older guesthouses, and shaded roads stay icy until late morning.
  • Afternoons (12–3 pm): sunny and pleasant in town when there is no disturbance, often 8–12°C. This is the best window for the snow points.
  • Evenings: the temperature drops fast after 4:30 pm. Plan to be back in town before dark on any day you go up to Solang or Sissu.

Will it snow in Manali in January?

Very probably somewhere in the valley, and quite possibly in town, but the timing can’t be predicted more than a few days ahead. As with December, it depends on how high you go:

  • Manali town (2,050 m): January is its best chance of the year for snow. Even so, some Januaries pass with only a light dusting.
  • Solang Valley (about 2,500 m) and Gulaba: snow on the ground through most of January once the first spell has come through.
  • Sissu and Lahaul, beyond the Atal Tunnel: deep, lasting snow, and the best snow scenery you can reach in a day. It is also the stretch most likely to be shut after a fresh fall.

What January 2026 taught us

Last winter is a good illustration of how January really plays out. December 2025 was almost dry in Manali. Then the season’s first proper snowfall arrived on Friday 23 January 2026, exactly as the Republic Day long weekend began.

  • Traffic between Kothi and Manali backed up for nearly 8 km, and the jam was still not cleared a day later. Hotel occupancy in Manali reached 100%, and some visitors moved down to Kullu for beds (reported by Curly Tales, 25 January 2026).
  • Across Himachal, 685 roads were blocked, most of them in Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Mandi and Kullu.
  • A second heavy spell on 27 January put up to a foot of fresh snow on Solang Nala and cut the link between Manali and Lahaul through the Atal Tunnel completely. Vehicles were stopped beyond Palchan, and some that had been stuck since the 23rd were still stranded. Rohtang, Baralacha, Shinku La and Kunzum were all closed (The Tribune, 28 January 2026).
  • Earlier that month, on 5 January, the tunnel road had been open to all vehicles.

The lesson isn’t to avoid January. It is that the same snowfall that makes the trip also closes the roads to the best snow, and that a long weekend multiplies the effect. A trip planned with one fixed “snow day” on a holiday weekend is the trip most likely to go wrong.

Atal Tunnel, Rohtang and Solang in January

Place January status What to know
Atal Tunnel & Sissu Open between spells After snowfall, police stop traffic beyond Solang or Palchan, or let only 4×4s with chains through. In past winters access has at times been limited to daytime windows such as 10 am–3 pm.
Rohtang Pass Closed for winter No tourist permits until it reopens in late spring. Live position on our Rohtang and road status page.
Solang Valley Open most days The most reliable snow day in January. Ropeway and snow activities run when the weather allows. See Solang Valley activities.
Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, Mall Road Open Beautiful under snow. Icy lanes, and some Old Manali cafés shut for winter.
Vashisht hot springs Open Best on a sub-zero morning.
Kullu, Naggar, Manikaran Open Lower and milder: the ideal buffer day when the high road is shut.
Spiti via Kunzum La Closed Winter Spiti is reached only via Shimla and Kinnaur, as a separate trip.

If you are driving yourself from the plains, January is the month to reconsider. Ice on the shaded bends between Manali and Solang catches out drivers from the plains every winter, and cars without snow chains are the first to be turned back. Our Delhi to Manali taxi puts a local driver who knows the winter road with you for the whole trip.

January 2027 dates that change the trip

  • 1–5 January: the tail of the New Year rush. Hotels are full and our Himachal packages still carry the peak-season supplement of about 25%. Our Christmas and New Year Manali packages cover this window.
  • 6–22 January: the sweet spot. Off-season rates return on 6 January, the town is quiet, and the snow odds are at their highest. If you can travel on weekdays in this window, do.
  • Lohri, Wednesday 13 January: bonfires in the evening, a small bump in Punjab and Haryana traffic.
  • Manali Winter Carnival: started in 1977 and now held from 20 January. It opened on that date in each of the last three years, and in 2026 it ran for five days, with a parade from Hadimba Temple to Mall Road, the Mahanati folk dance and the Winter Queen contest. The 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026.
  • Republic Day weekend, Saturday 23 to Tuesday 26 January: with one day’s leave on Monday 25 it becomes a four-day weekend. Expect January 2026 levels of traffic if snow coincides. Book by early December, or avoid these dates.
  • Mid-January onwards: the snow igloo stays at Sethan usually open once there is a proper snow base. See our igloo stay in Manali page.

A 5-day January plan with the weather built in

This is the shape of most January trips we run from Delhi. The key difference from summer is that the snow day is never fixed in advance. Our coordinator checks the tunnel road and the police advisory each evening and moves it to the clearest morning.

  1. Day 1: Delhi to Manali. Overnight Volvo or a private car via Chandigarh, Bilaspur and Mandi (about 540 km, 11–13 hours). Leave early enough to clear the Kullu–Manali stretch in daylight.
  2. Day 2: Manali at walking pace. Hadimba Devi Temple, Manu Temple, Vashisht hot springs and Mall Road. A rest day for the body to adjust to the cold.
  3. Day 3: Snow day (moveable). Leave at first light for Solang and, if the road is open, through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu. Rent snow suits and boots on the way. Our snow gear guide explains where. Our Atal Tunnel and Sissu snow trip page covers the day in detail.
  4. Day 4: Kullu, Naggar and Manikaran, or the second snow attempt. If day 3 was blocked, this is where it gets made up.
  5. Day 5: Manali to Delhi. Morning free, then the drive or overnight bus.

Families with small children or older parents should add a night. January cold is harder on them than altitude is. Our Himachal tour package for families shows how we pace it. Couples who want snow without a 5 am start usually take our Manali honeymoon package with an extra night. If you have a week, the classic Shimla Manali package gives you two chances at snow: Kufri or Narkanda first, then Solang.

What to pack for Manali in January

  • Two sets of thermal innerwear, a fleece and a down or padded jacket. Layer them rather than relying on one heavy coat.
  • Waterproof gloves, not woollen ones, for the snow day. Wet wool turns into ice.
  • Woollen cap, scarf or neck gaiter, and three pairs of thick socks.
  • Shoes with deep grip. Iced lanes in Old Manali and around Hadimba cause more falls than the snow points do.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. Sun reflected off fresh snow burns quickly.
  • Cash, a power bank and any regular medicines. ATMs and phone signal thin out beyond Solang, and batteries drain fast in the cold.

Check our note on Himachal entry tax and permits if your car is coming from outside the state.

Manali in January vs other snow options

If snow is the priority and your dates are fixed, it is worth comparing. Gulmarg has deeper, more dependable snow in January but costs more and needs a flight. Shimla’s snow is lighter and less predictable. Our Manali vs Kashmir comparison sets the two side by side month by month. If you are travelling in December instead, read Manali in December. It is quieter in the first three weeks, but drier.

For travel agents: January groups to Manali

January is the month when group itineraries break. Coaches can’t go beyond Solang after snow, tempo travellers need chains, and a single closed day can push a whole group’s snow activity into the departure day. We build January group programmes with a floating snow day, a lower-altitude fallback and 4×4 transfers on standby. As a Himachal DMC handling ground arrangements across the state, we confirm rooming for the Republic Day weekend early. Allotments for 23–26 January go much like the New Year week.

Manali in January: frequently asked questions

Is January a good time to visit Manali?

Yes, if you want snow and can handle real cold. It is the snowiest month of the year, and from 6 January rates fall to off-season levels. The trade-off is access: heavy snow can shut the road to Solang and the Atal Tunnel for a day or more, so keep your plan flexible.

What is the temperature in Manali in January?

IMD’s 1991–2020 normals give an average maximum of about 10.5°C and an average minimum of about −1°C. The record low is −11.6°C. Solang and Sissu are several degrees colder than town, so pack for well below freezing on the snow day.

Does it snow in Manali town in January?

Often, but not every year. January gets about 90 mm of precipitation over five to six days, more than any other winter month. In 2026, Manali’s first snowfall of the season came on 23 January. Solang and Sissu have snow on the ground through most of the month.

Is the Atal Tunnel open in January?

It is open between snow spells and shut or restricted after them. Police routinely stop traffic beyond Solang or Palchan, or allow only 4×4 vehicles with chains, until the Border Roads Organisation clears the road. In January 2026 it was open on 5 January and closed after the snowfalls of 23 and 27 January.

Is Rohtang Pass open in January?

No. Rohtang is closed to tourist vehicles all winter. For snow, go to Solang, Gulaba or Sissu instead.

When is the Manali Winter Carnival 2027?

The dates had not been announced as of October 2026. For the last three years the carnival has opened on 20 January and run for about five days, so late January is the likely window.

How many days do I need for Manali in January?

Five days from Delhi, including overnight travel, is the minimum. Six is better, because the spare day absorbs a closed road or a snowfall delay without costing you the snow.

Should I drive my own car to Manali in January?

Only if you have driven on snow and ice before and carry chains. Police turn back cars without chains after snowfall, and icy bends catch out drivers from the plains every winter. A local driver knows when the police will stop traffic, and which way round to go.
