The road has three states: open to all cars, 4×4 with chains only beyond Solang Nala, or closed until it is cleared after heavy snow. Police may also set timings on snow days.
We check which one applies the evening before and book the right vehicle — so you are not turned back at the barrier.
Best time for Atal Tunnel and Sissu snow
| Months | What to expect | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Oct – Nov | First snow at Sissu, clear skies; Solang is usually bare | Best-value snow — book after we check the week’s forecast |
| Dec – Feb | Deep snow, frozen waterfall and lake; 4×4-only days and full closures (about 4 days after the 23–24 Jan 2026 snowfall) | Keep a buffer day; expect Christmas–New Year jams |
| Mar – Apr | Snow melting at Sissu; the road is open more often | A good mix of snow and reliable access |
| May – Jun | Little snow at Sissu; Rohtang open with a permit; heavy traffic | Combine with a Rohtang permit day |
| Jul – Sep | Green Lahaul; landslide risk in the monsoon | Sightseeing, not snow |

Atal Tunnel and Sissu — questions
Do we need a permit for the Atal Tunnel?
No. The tunnel and Sissu need no permit; only the old road over Rohtang Pass needs an online permit. For today’s road position see our Rohtang permit and road status page.
How far is Sissu from Manali?
About 40 km, roughly 1.5 hours in clear weather. The tunnel itself is 9.02 km long.
Is there snow at Sissu in October and November?
Often, yes — the first snow usually reaches Sissu in October–November, but it isn’t guaranteed. We check the week’s forecast before you book.
Can a normal car go to Sissu after snowfall?
Usually not. After fresh snow police allow only 4×4 vehicles beyond Solang Nala, and heavy snow can shut the road for days. We switch you to a 4×4 with chains.
Can we stop or take photos inside the tunnel?
No. Stopping is only for emergencies, and photography isn’t allowed inside.
Atal Tunnel or Rohtang — which is better for snow?
Sissu, through the tunnel, has snow from about October to March with no permit. Rohtang opens only from around mid-May to October–November and needs a permit.
How much does an Atal Tunnel–Sissu trip cost?
Get Quote. It depends on the snow, the vehicle (SUV or 4×4), group size and dates, so we don’t publish a fixed rate. Send your date on WhatsApp and we reply with today’s rate within minutes.
Is Sissu OK for kids and elders?
Yes for a short visit, with warm layers. Sissu is about 3,120 m, so keep the stay short and come down if anyone feels unwell.
