The best time for each part of Himachal

Himachal’s regions sit at very different heights, so the right month depends on where you want to go.

Shimla

March–June is the district’s main season (15–25 °C / 59–77 °F), and October–November is dry and clear. December–February brings snow, with nights around 0 °C (32 °F). Shimla is 370 km (230 mi) from Delhi; the Kalka–Shimla toy train (96 km / 60 mi) is a UNESCO World Heritage railway.

Manali

Mild from April to June and again in late September to November. Rohtang Pass (51 km / 32 mi away) is usually open from May until late November and needs a permit; Solang, 13 km (8 mi) away, is the nearest snow in winter. Read Manali in January for a winter trip.

Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj sits at 2,082 m (6,831 ft) under the Dhauladhar range. Spring and autumn are the easy seasons; snowfall is common in winter. Kangra airport is 14 km (9 mi) away. See our McLeod Ganj guide.

Spiti and Lahaul

The high desert behind the main range. Kunzum Pass, the road between Spiti and Manali, is closed for more than nine months a year — usually from October/November to June/July. The road from Shimla through Kinnaur stays open almost all year up to Kaza, but it is a long, slow drive (412 km / 256 mi, about 20 hours with a night halt).

Which high roads are open when

Snow decides the season more than temperature. These are the official, usual patterns — exact opening dates change every year.

Road Usually open Notes
Atal Tunnel (Manali → Lahaul) All year 9.02 km (5.6 mi) long at about 3,000 m (9,800 ft); keeps Manali connected to Lahaul in winter. Short closures after heavy snow happen.
Rohtang Pass (from Manali) May to late November Closed by heavy snow from late November; a vehicle permit is needed.
Kunzum Pass (Lahaul ↔ Spiti) About mid-June to October/November Closed more than nine months a year; the road is usually restored in mid-June.
Shimla → Kinnaur → Kaza Almost all year 412 km (256 mi), about 20 hours of driving with a night halt; slow in winter.

The monsoon: what July and August really mean

The UK FCDO says: ‘The monsoon season in India usually runs from June to October’, with flash flooding and landslides that ‘can often occur with limited warning’, and advises: ‘Avoid travelling at night and in fog as accidents are common due to low visibility’ (checked 21 Oct 2026). In Shimla, July averages 346 mm (13.6 in) of rain over about 23 days. In July 2025, for example, the Shimla weather centre issued heavy-rain alerts and tourists were advised to stay away from rivers and streams and follow local authorities. If your only window is July or August, we plan short drives, buffer days and stays away from riverbanks — or suggest another season.

We don’t promise any month is safe or unsafe. We share the official advice with dates and plan around it with you.

Which month suits which trip

Four common reasons international travellers come to Himachal, and the months that fit each.

  1. Snow and a white ChristmasMid-December to February. Shimla averages about 40 cm (16 in) of snow in each of January and February, but no year is guaranteed. Pair it with our India in December guide.
  2. Mild weather and green valleysApril to June. Combine Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala with the Golden Triangle — see our India 2-week itinerary.
  3. Clear views and quiet roadsOctober and November, the driest months. Days are mild; nights get cold.
  4. Spiti ValleyMid-June to September for the full loop (in through Kinnaur, out over Kunzum Pass to Manali). Outside that window Spiti is reached only through Kinnaur.

Permits for foreign visitors: Kinnaur and Spiti

Protected areas

Parts of upper Kinnaur and Spiti near the border are protected areas. The Kinnaur district guidelines say: ‘No foreigner can enter or stay in the protected area of the State without obtaining a permit.’ They cover around 40 villages of the Pooh block (for example Nako) and Spiti villages such as Tabo and Dhankar.

Who can apply

The official rule allows foreign tourists in groups of two or more, sponsored by a recognised Indian travel agency, to visit the listed places for up to 30 days. Kaza itself can be visited without the permit.

How we handle it

We arrange the Protected Area Permit with you through the official process before the trip. Rules can change, so we confirm them when we quote.

Altitude

Spiti and Lahaul are high. Consult your doctor before you travel, and see CDC or NHS Fit for Travel for altitude advice.

Practical basics

Visa

Apply yourself only at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware look-alike sites that charge extra. We are not a visa agency. Our e-Visa guide walks through it.

Your car and driver

Hill roads are slow, so a private car with an experienced mountain driver makes the most sense — see our private car with driver. Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.

What to pack

Layers all year. From December to February a warm jacket is a must — Shimla nights fall to around 0 °C (32 °F). A rain jacket from June to September.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask

What is the best month to visit Manali?

April to June for mild weather, late September to November for dry, clear days, and December to February for snow. Rohtang Pass, Manali’s best-known high road, is usually open from May until late November and needs a permit.

What is the best time to visit Shimla?

The Shimla district calls March to June the best season, with temperatures of about 15–25 °C (59–77 °F). October and November are the driest months. December to February is cold and snowy, with nights around 0 °C (32 °F).

When does it snow in Himachal?

Mainly December to February. Shimla averages about 7 cm of snow in December and about 40 cm in each of January and February (IMD, 1990–2010), with late snow possible in March. Amounts vary every year and are never guaranteed.

When is the best time to visit Spiti Valley?

Mid-June to September, when Kunzum Pass is usually open and you can drive the full loop through Kinnaur and back over to Manali. Kunzum is closed for more than nine months a year; outside the window Spiti is reached only through Kinnaur.

Is it a good idea to visit Himachal in the monsoon?

July and August are Shimla’s wettest months (346 mm and 314 mm on average). The UK FCDO warns that monsoon flash floods and landslides can occur with limited warning. If you travel then, keep plans flexible, add buffer days and stay away from rivers.

Do foreigners need a permit for Spiti?

For parts of it. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for listed villages in upper Kinnaur (such as Nako) and Spiti (such as Tabo and Dhankar); Kaza itself does not need one. We arrange the permit with you through the official process.

Is the Atal Tunnel open in winter?

Yes — the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel keeps Manali connected to Lahaul throughout the year, though short closures after heavy snow can happen. The older road over Rohtang Pass is closed from late November until about May.
