There is no railway to Manali and, as of October 2026, no scheduled direct flight. Most international visitors hire a private car with a driver and leave Shimla by 7 am; HRTC state buses take 9–10 hours and cost roughly ₹635–1,176 (about US$7–12).

How far is Shimla from Manali, and how long does it take?

By the main road it is about 250 km. On a dry day, with one breakfast stop and one lunch stop, a private car takes 7–8 hours. The road starts on the Shimla ridge at about 2,200 m, drops to the Sutlej river near Bilaspur, follows the Beas river up through Mandi and Kullu, and ends in Manali at roughly 2,050 m. So despite the hours in the car, you finish at almost the same height you started.

The figure that surprises most visitors is the speed. Expect an average of 30–35 km an hour once stops are counted. The first hour out of Shimla is all hairpin bends, the stretch between Bilaspur and Sundernagar is often slow with trucks, and October adds apple-season pickups around Kullu. The four-lane sections near Mandi and the tunnels in the Beas gorge are where you make up time.

Some booking sites quote much shorter distances for this route. They are wrong for the road you will drive; plan on 250 km.

Is a private car the best way from Shimla to Manali?

For most international visitors, yes. The day is long, and a car turns it into a sightseeing day instead of a transfer. You are picked up at your hotel (Shimla’s Mall Road area is closed to cars, so the driver meets you at the nearest road point), you stop when you want, and your bags stay with you.

The route our drivers take runs Shimla – Ghanahatti – Darlaghat – Bilaspur – Sundernagar – Mandi – Pandoh – Aut tunnel – Bhuntar – Kullu – Manali. Good stops along the way:

  • Bilaspur, about a third of the way, beside the Gobind Sagar reservoir: the usual breakfast halt.
  • Mandi, an old temple town on the Beas. The highway bypasses it, so ask the driver to cut in if you want to see the riverside temples.
  • Pandoh dam and the Beas gorge: after Pandoh the road runs through a string of tunnels and then out of the Aut tunnel into the Kullu valley.
  • Kullu shawl stalls: hand-loomed Kullu shawls are sold along the highway. Buy from a shop that shows the weave, not from roadside hawkers.

Choose a car with a driver who does this road often. Ask for an SUV such as an Innova if anyone in your group gets car-sick: the higher seat helps on the bends. If you are also covering Delhi, Agra and the hills, it usually costs less to keep one car and driver for the whole trip than to book one-way drops. Our private car and driver page explains how that works for international guests. Domestic travellers who only want this one leg can see the route and car types on our Shimla to Manali taxi page.

Can you take a bus from Shimla to Manali?

Yes. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), the state bus company, runs the route. On 25 October 2026 ixigo listed six or seven HRTC departures a day, from 08:00 to 21:40, with fares of ₹635–1,176 depending on the bus type: ordinary, AC seater, semi-sleeper or Volvo. The journey takes 9–10 hours.

Three things to know:

  • Buses leave from the ISBT at Tutikandi, the inter-state bus terminal on the Shimla bypass, not from Mall Road. Allow a taxi from your hotel.
  • Book on the HRTC site or a booking app a day or two ahead in peak season (May–June, Diwali, Christmas to New Year). Foreign cards sometimes fail on Indian booking sites, so keep a backup payment method.
  • Night buses save a hotel night but you see nothing, and you arrive in Manali at dawn, tired. For a first visit we suggest a day bus.

HRTC is reliable and cheap but basic: luggage goes in the hold or overhead, there are two or three short food stops, and the bus driver will not wait for photos.

Is there a train or flight from Shimla to Manali?

There is no train. The Kalka–Shimla toy train ends in Shimla, and no railway reaches Manali or Kullu. If you see a “train” option online, it means going back down to Kalka or Chandigarh and then taking a road from there, which is longer than driving directly.

There is also no scheduled flight right now. Alliance Air flew Shimla–Kullu in 2022, four days a week, on a 50-minute hop (The Tribune, 21 October 2022). When Alliance Air restarted Shimla flights in May 2026, the routes announced were Delhi and Dharamshala, not Kullu (ch-aviation, 18 May 2026). If a Shimla–Kullu service returns, it lands at Bhuntar, 52 km from Manali. Our Kullu–Manali airport guide explains how weather-dependent that small airfield is.

What is the Jalori Pass route, and is it worth it?

There is a second road between Shimla and the Kullu valley, and it is far prettier than the main highway. It goes north from Shimla to Narkanda, then down to Ani and up over the Jalori Pass at 3,120 m, before dropping to Banjar and joining the main highway near Aut. From the top of the pass an easy forest walk leads to Serolsar lake.

It is worth it if you have an extra day, but treat it as a two-day trip. Stay one night in Tirthan Valley or Jibhi, both small riverside villages just below the pass: see our Tirthan Valley guide. Be realistic about the road: a few kilometres either side of the pass are unpaved, steep and muddy after rain, and the pass is usually blocked by snow from mid to late December until about April (Vargis Khan, Jalori Pass guide). Only a driver who knows it should take you over, and not in a sedan after rain.

When is the best time to drive from Shimla to Manali?

The main road via Mandi stays open all year because it follows river valleys and crosses no high pass. Conditions change a lot by season:

  • March–June: the easiest months. May and June are busy with Indian holidaymakers, so leave early.
  • July–mid-September (monsoon): landslides and road damage are common, especially in the Beas gorge and between Kullu and Manali. Floods in 2023 and 2025 cut Manali off for days, and in March 2026 a repaired stretch near Raison was washed away again, with two-lane traffic kept running while it was rebuilt (The Tribune, 21 March 2026). Keep a buffer day.
  • October–November: clear skies, apple trucks, and Diwali traffic (8 November 2026). One of the best times to go.
  • December–February: the first hour out of Shimla can be icy after snowfall, and short daylight makes the 7 am start important. Manali itself may have snow. The Jalori route is closed.

For the weather in Manali when you arrive, see our Manali in November guide.

What does a good Shimla–Manali day look like?

  • 06:30 Pick-up near your Shimla hotel; tea at Darlaghat once the bends are over.
  • 09:00 Breakfast at Bilaspur.
  • 12:00–13:00 Lunch at Mandi or Ner Chowk; 30 minutes in the old town if you want it.
  • 14:00 Pandoh dam, the Beas gorge tunnels, and out into the Kullu valley at Aut.
  • 15:30 Kullu shawl stop or a short break at Kullu.
  • 17:00 Arrive in Manali, ideally in daylight.

If you are planning a longer route, this leg sits in the middle of our two-week India itinerary: Golden Triangle first, then Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala. If you have not travelled up from Delhi yet, our Delhi to Shimla guide covers that first leg.

Tips for international travellers on this route

  • Car sickness: the first 40 km has dozens of hairpins. Eat lightly, sit in front if you can, and take medication before you leave, not halfway.
  • Cash: carry some rupees for tea stops and toilets; dhabas (roadside eateries) on this road often prefer UPI or cash to foreign cards.
  • Mobile signal drops in the Beas gorge tunnels and around Pandoh. Download offline maps.
  • Tolls and parking are usually added at cost to private car fares; ask whether your quote includes them.
  • Do not plan Rohtang Pass on arrival day. It needs a separate permit, a separate day, and in winter it is closed.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is Shimla to Manali by car?

About 7–8 hours for the 250 km main road via Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu, with breakfast and lunch stops. Without stops it can be done in about 6.5 hours on a clear day, but traffic between Bilaspur and Sundernagar, apple-season trucks in October and monsoon road repairs often add an hour. Leave Shimla by 7 am to arrive before dark.

Is the Shimla to Manali road safe for foreigners?

Yes. It is a busy national highway used by buses, trucks and thousands of tourists, with four-lane sections and modern tunnels near Mandi. The main risks are weather-related: landslides in the July–September monsoon and ice on the Shimla end after winter snowfall. Travel in daylight with an experienced hill driver, and check conditions the day before during the monsoon.

How much is the bus from Shimla to Manali?

HRTC fares listed on 25 October 2026 ranged from ₹635 for an ordinary seat to about ₹1,176 for a Volvo or sleeper, roughly US$7–12. Buses leave from the ISBT at Tutikandi between 08:00 and 21:40 and take 9–10 hours. Fares change, so check the HRTC site or a booking app before you travel.

Can I fly from Shimla to Manali?

Not as of October 2026. Alliance Air ran a Shimla–Kullu flight in 2022, but its May 2026 Shimla restart covered only Delhi and Dharamshala. If the route returns, flights land at Bhuntar, 52 km from Manali, and are often cancelled by weather in this narrow valley, so keep a road plan as backup.

Is there a train from Shimla to Manali?

No. The Kalka–Shimla toy train ends in Shimla and no railway reaches Kullu or Manali. Going back down to Kalka or Chandigarh by train and then driving to Manali takes longer than driving directly from Shimla. Do the toy train on the way up to Shimla, then continue to Manali by road.

Should I stop overnight between Shimla and Manali?

Not on the main road; it is a long but comfortable single day. A night stop makes sense only if you take the Jalori Pass back road, with a night in Tirthan Valley or Jibhi, or if you want to explore Mandi. In winter, when daylight is short, a few travellers break the trip at Mandi, but most do it in one day.
