Short answer: Chandigarh to Manali is about 290–300 km by road and takes 7–9 hours. For most international travellers a private car with driver is the right choice: door to door, stops at Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu, and no bus-station logistics. The HRTC Himsuta Volvo (about ₹1,121 / US$12, 8–9 hours) is the budget option. Flying means Chandigarh–Kullu (Bhuntar), which is not always on sale and still leaves a 50 km drive; most people fly only from Delhi.
Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)
- Best overall: private car with driver, 7–9 hours, any departure time, luggage in the boot, lunch stop of your choice.
- Cheapest comfortable: HRTC Himsuta AC Volvo from Chandigarh ISBT-43, departures around 02:40 and 08:50, about 8 h 10 m–8 h 20 m, about ₹1,121 (AbhiBus listing, Jan 2026; checked 30 Oct 2026). Ordinary buses about ₹625, 9 hours.
- Flight: Chandigarh–Kullu (Bhuntar) has been operated by Alliance Air in some seasons and dropped in others; check the current schedule. Bhuntar is 50 km, about 1.5 hours, from Manali.
- Route: Chandigarh → Kiratpur → Bilaspur → Sundernagar → Mandi → Pandoh → Aut tunnel → Bhuntar → Kullu → Manali, mostly NH-3 and NH-205.
- Road quality: four-lane from Kiratpur to Nerchowk and from Takoli to Manali; the Mandi–Pandoh–Takoli section is the slow part with tunnels and construction.
- Timing: leave Chandigarh by 07:00 to reach Manali by mid-afternoon; avoid arriving after dark in winter.
- Package: Shimla Manali from Chandigarh 5N/6D ₹12,499 per person (about US$132) off-season, with transfers included.

How far is Manali from Chandigarh, and how long does it take?
Chandigarh is the natural gateway to the Kullu Valley. It has the nearest full-size airport to Manali, a railway station on the Delhi line, and the road north is shorter and better than the Delhi one. By road the distance is about 290–300 km depending on where in Chandigarh you start and whether the car uses the newer four-lane bypasses; the government’s own figure for the Kiratpur–Manali section is 232 km, falling to about 195 km once the remaining four-laning is done (The Tribune, 27 May 2024).
Driving time is 7–9 hours including a lunch stop. The variables are traffic out of Chandigarh and through Mandi, roadworks between Mandi and Takoli, and the season: in May–June and over Christmas the last 40 km from Kullu into Manali can add an hour of queues. From Delhi, by comparison, you are looking at about 530 km and 12–14 hours; our Delhi to Manali guide compares the Delhi options, and many of our guests take the morning Shatabdi train to Chandigarh and start the drive from there, which is faster and far more comfortable than the whole thing by road.
Exchange rates in this guide use about ₹95 to the US dollar (October 2026). Treat every dollar figure as approximate.
Chandigarh to Manali at a glance: car, bus or flight?

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car + driver | Any time; we suggest 06:30–07:30 | 7–9 h door to door | Couples, families, luggage, anyone arriving at the airport | Costs more than the bus for one person; book a driver who knows the hill road |
| HRTC Himsuta AC Volvo | About 02:40 and 08:50 from ISBT-43; more in season | 8–9 h | Solo travellers, tight budgets | Fixed times; big luggage goes in the hold; arrives at Manali bus stand |

| Ordinary HRTC bus | Several a day | 9–10 h | Backpackers | No AC, 3+2 seating, many stops |
| Flight IXC–KUU | Intermittent; check current schedule | About 45 min flying + 1.5 h drive | Anyone who cannot sit in a car for 8 hours | Small aircraft, weather cancellations, route not always on sale |
Bus times and fares are from the AbhiBus HRTC listing (page dated 21 January 2026), checked 30 October 2026; HRTC adds and removes services by season, so confirm on hrtchp.com or at ISBT-43 before you rely on a departure.
Is a private car the best way from Chandigarh to Manali?
For most international visitors, yes. The road is a hill highway with towns, trucks, a dam and a long stretch of construction; a driver who does it weekly reads it in a way a map cannot. You leave when you like, usually straight from the airport or from a hotel in Sector 17 or 35, and stop for breakfast at Kiratpur or Bilaspur, lunch at Mandi or Pandoh, and tea at Kullu. The car then stays with you in Manali for Solang, Sissu and Naggar, which matters because Manali’s sights are spread along 50 km of valley.
Which vehicle? A sedan (Dzire, Etios) is fine for two people with cabin bags; an Innova Crysta or similar SUV is better for three or four, for ski luggage, and for winter, when snow on the last stretch to Solang needs ground clearance. Larger groups use a Tempo Traveller. Our sedan vs SUV vs Tempo Traveller comparison explains the trade-offs, and the Chandigarh to Manali taxi page has the vehicle options and what is included; airport pick-ups are covered on our Chandigarh airport taxi page.
Should you self-drive? We would not. Indian hill roads are not dangerous in themselves, but the driving culture is different: overtaking on blind bends, trucks straddling the centre line, and cows on the carriageway are normal. Hire-car companies also restrict Himachal routes in winter. A car with a professional driver costs little more and removes the stress; our piece on whether Himalayan highways are safe goes into the detail.
What is the HRTC Volvo from Chandigarh to Manali like?
Himachal’s state bus company, HRTC, runs air-conditioned Volvo coaches branded “Himsuta” between Chandigarh ISBT Sector 43 and Manali. When we checked, the two daily Himsuta services left around 02:40 and 08:50 and took about 8 h 10 m–8 h 20 m, with a fare of about ₹1,121 (US$12); ordinary non-AC buses ran from 04:40 for about ₹625 (US$6.60) and took closer to 9 hours (AbhiBus HRTC listing, checked 30 Oct 2026). In the May–June and December peaks HRTC adds departures, and private operators run evening Volvos and sleeper coaches from Chandigarh, Zirakpur and Mohali.
The Volvo is a decent choice for solo travellers. Seats recline, there is one meal stop (usually around Sundernagar or Mandi), and the bus goes straight to the Manali bus stand near the Mall. The drawbacks: the 02:40 departure means a hotel night in Chandigarh with a 02:00 alarm, large suitcases ride in the hold, and the bus cannot stop at the Pandoh dam viewpoint or the Kullu shawl factories. Book on the HRTC site or redBus; the Foreign Tourist Quota does not apply to buses, so just use a card.
Can you fly from Chandigarh to Manali?
Manali has no airport. The nearest is Kullu–Manali airport at Bhuntar, 50 km south of Manali, a short runway in the Beas gorge served by small turboprops. Alliance Air has connected Chandigarh and Bhuntar in some seasons (The Tribune reported both launches and withdrawals of the route in different years), and when it runs the flight takes about 45 minutes. It is not a route you can plan a trip around a year ahead; check what is on sale for your dates.
The dependable air route is Delhi–Bhuntar, which Alliance Air flies most days. From Bhuntar it is about 1.5 hours by car to Manali. Our Kullu Manali airport guide covers the flights, the weather cancellations (common in monsoon and on winter mornings) and the transfer. In practice, if you are already in Chandigarh, the car is quicker and more reliable than flying.
What is the drive from Chandigarh to Manali like, and where should you stop?
The road climbs in stages, which is part of the pleasure. Out of Chandigarh you cross the Punjab plain on NH-205 past Ropar (Rupnagar) and Anandpur Sahib, a Sikh pilgrimage town with the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum that makes a good 45-minute detour. At Kiratpur (about 80 km, 1.5–2 hours) you enter Himachal and the four-lane section begins, with tunnels and a long bridge over the Gobind Sagar reservoir at Bilaspur. Our office is at Ghumarwin, just off this stretch; guests who want a boat or jet-ski stop can see our Gobind Sagar water sports page.
From Sundernagar (about 150 km) the road follows the Beas canal into Mandi (about 175 km, 4–4.5 hours), a temple town with an old bazaar and a good lunch stop. Then the slow section: Mandi to Pandoh and Takoli, where the four-laning is still being built, with tunnels, one-way sections and the Pandoh dam. The 2.8 km Aut tunnel brings you into the Kullu valley proper, past Bhuntar and the airport, through Kullu town (about 250 km) with its shawl factories and the Dussehra ground, then up the left-bank road past Patlikuhal and Naggar to Manali. For a longer trip that strings Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala together from Chandigarh, see our Himachal road trip from Chandigarh guide.
| Stop | Approx. km from Chandigarh | Approx. time | Why stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anandpur Sahib | 75 | 1.5 h | Sikh holy town, Virasat-e-Khalsa museum (closed Mondays; check hours) |
| Bilaspur / Gobind Sagar | 115 | 2.5 h | Reservoir views, breakfast, water sports |
| Mandi | 175 | 4–4.5 h | Lunch, old temples, Bhutnath bazaar |
| Pandoh dam | 195 | 5 h | Viewpoint over the Beas; no photography of the dam itself |
| Kullu | 250 | 6.5–7 h | Shawl factories, tea, rafting at Pirdi (Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov) |
| Naggar | 275 | 7.5 h | Castle and Roerich gallery if time allows; otherwise save for a day trip |
| Manali | 295 | 8 h | Arrive by mid-afternoon |
When should you travel, and what changes by season?
The road is open all year; it is the conditions that change. October to November is the easiest: dry, clear, moderate traffic. December to February is fine as far as Kullu, but snow can slow the last 40 km and the Solang road; start early so you are in Manali before dark, and use an SUV. March to June is dry and busy, with the worst jams in late May and June between Kullu and Manali. July to mid-September is the monsoon: the Mandi–Pandoh–Aut section along the Beas is landslide-prone, and the road closes for hours after heavy rain. We still drive it, with a flexible plan and a driver who checks the morning road report; our Himachal in the monsoon guide explains how. Himachal levies a small green tax on taxis entering Manali, which the driver pays; details are in our Himachal entry tax and permits note.
How does this fit a wider Himachal trip?
Chandigarh is the start of most of our Himachal circuits. The classic is Chandigarh → Shimla (2 nights) → Manali (3 nights) → Chandigarh, which is our Shimla Manali from Chandigarh 5N/6D package at ₹12,499 per person (about US$132) in the off-season band (1 Nov–19 Dec and 6 Jan–14 Mar; peak dates about 25% higher). Shimla to Manali is itself a 7–8 hour drive via Mandi or Jalori, covered in our Shimla to Manali guide; if you are heading for Shimla first, see Chandigarh to Shimla. For what to do on arrival, our Manali guide for international travellers is the place to start, and if you have a day in the city before you head north, our Chandigarh travel guide covers Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex and the Rock Garden.
Booking works the same for every route: a 20% token confirms a Himachal package, with a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of paying; the balance is due before the trip; international cards are accepted through Razorpay and PayPal.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Manali from Chandigarh?
About 290–300 km by road via Kiratpur, Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu, which takes 7–9 hours by car including a lunch stop. The HRTC Volvo takes 8–9 hours. The straight-line distance is much shorter, but the road follows the Sutlej and Beas valleys and climbs from about 350 m in Chandigarh to about 2,050 m in Manali.
What is the best way to travel from Chandigarh to Manali?
A private car with driver for most visitors: it leaves when you want, stops where you like and stays with you in Manali for day trips. The HRTC Himsuta Volvo, about ₹1,121 and 8–9 hours, is the budget alternative. Flying to Bhuntar only makes sense from Delhi, as the Chandigarh–Kullu flight is not always operating.
Is there a direct flight from Chandigarh to Manali?
Not to Manali itself, which has no airport. Alliance Air has flown Chandigarh to Kullu (Bhuntar), 50 km south of Manali, in some seasons and withdrawn it in others, so check what is on sale for your dates. Delhi to Bhuntar runs most days. From Bhuntar it is about 1.5 hours by road to Manali.
Is the Chandigarh to Manali road safe?
Yes, in season and with a competent driver. It is a two-lane hill highway between Mandi and Takoli with ongoing four-laning, and a four-lane road elsewhere. The risks are monsoon landslides from July to mid-September, snow on the last stretch in winter, and the local driving style. We recommend a car with a professional driver rather than self-driving.
Where does the HRTC bus to Manali leave from in Chandigarh?
From ISBT Sector 43, about 10 km from the airport and 5 km from Sector 17. Himsuta AC Volvo departures were around 02:40 and 08:50 when we checked, with ordinary buses through the day. In peak season HRTC adds services and private operators run evening Volvos from Chandigarh, Zirakpur and Mohali.
Can you drive from Chandigarh to Manali in one day?
Yes. Leaving by 07:00 you will reach Manali by mid-afternoon in normal conditions, with stops at Bilaspur and Mandi. In the May–June and Christmas peaks, or during the monsoon, allow 9–10 hours. We do not recommend planning to arrive after dark between December and February, when the last stretch can be icy.
