Short answer: Kullu Manali Airport (IATA code KUU, also written Kullu–Manali Airport) is at Bhuntar, 52 km and about 1.5 hours by road south of Manali. It is a small valley airfield with a 1,125 m runway served only by Alliance Air turboprops from Delhi, usually one flight a day on five days a week, and it is prone to weather cancellations. It works when it works; always hold a road backup via Chandigarh or an overnight Volvo from Delhi.

Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)

  • Where: Bhuntar, Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh; 11 km from Kullu town, 52 km from Manali (about 1.5 h by taxi).
  • Who flies: Alliance Air (9I) only, ATR 72 turboprops; Delhi–Kullu 9I803 departs about 06:20 and lands about 07:40, five days in the week of 26 October 2026 (FlightsFrom schedule data); Kullu–Delhi 9I804 leaves around 08:05.
  • Fares: one way roughly ₹17,000–24,400 (about US$180–260) in 2026 per The Tribune, far above the airline’s other routes.
  • Reliability: daylight-only visual approach; flights are cancelled or turned back in cloud, rain and snow, and schedules have been cut or suspended several times since 2024.
  • Best alternative: fly to Chandigarh (IXC) then 300 km / 7–8 h by private car; or Delhi–Manali overnight Volvo (12–14 h) or car (10–12 h).
  • Atal Tunnel: open year-round, keeps Manali–Lahaul reachable; Rohtang Pass itself usually shuts by mid-November.

Where is Kullu–Manali Airport, and how far is it from Manali?

The airport sits on the bank of the Beas river at Bhuntar, where the Parvati valley meets the Kullu valley, at an elevation of 1,089 m (3,573 ft). It is operated by the Airports Authority of India under the codes KUU (IATA) and VIBR (ICAO). Kullu town is 11 km north; Manali is 52 km north on NH3, a drive of about 1.5 hours in normal traffic and two hours or more on summer weekends and in the Christmas rush. Kasol and the Parvati valley are 30 km east, Naggar about 30 km north, and our own base in Bilaspur district is 90 minutes south.

Taxis wait outside the small terminal, and your hotel or operator can send a car to meet the flight. There is no bus link worth planning around. Note that the road from Bhuntar to Manali passes Kullu, Patlikuhal and Naggar turn-offs, so if your hotel is in the Naggar or Jagatsukh area ask the driver to take the left-bank road, which is quieter.

Which airlines fly to Kullu–Manali Airport in 2026?

One: Alliance Air, the regional carrier, flying ATR 72 and ATR 42 turboprops of about 70 seats. The short runway, 1,125 m, rules out jets, and no other airline has served Bhuntar regularly since 2024. The core service is Delhi–Kullu and back. In the week of 26 October to 1 November 2026, flight 9I803 was scheduled on five days with a 06:20 departure from Delhi (07:50 on Sunday) and a block time of 1 h 20 m (FlightsFrom route data, checked 23 October 2026). Flight tracking for the return 9I804 shows ATR 72-600 aircraft operating Kullu–Delhi on 17, 20, 22 and 23 October 2026, leaving a little after 08:00 (Flightradar24, checked 23 October 2026).

The schedule changes often, and that is the point to understand. The Tribune reported on 25 August 2025 that Alliance Air had cut Kullu–Delhi to one weekly flight, cut Kullu–Jaipur to one, and suspended Kullu–Dehradun, blaming the monsoon. On 8 November 2025 the same paper reported direct Kullu–Delhi flights suspended until 29 March 2026, with Delhi–Kullu on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and connections via Chandigarh or Dehradun. On 9 May 2026 it reported service back up to five days a week before the summer rush, with Jaipur, Amritsar and Dehradun links added on one or two days each, and one-way fares of around ₹17,000 on Tuesdays and Sundays and ₹24,400 on other days (about US$180 and US$260 at ₹94.70 per US$, USD/INR close 22 October 2026). Passenger numbers tell the same story: AAI counted 20,619 passengers at Bhuntar in April 2025–March 2026, down 30.5% on the previous year.

What this means for you: check the live schedule for your exact date on the Alliance Air site or a flight-search engine shortly before you book, expect a single morning rotation, and assume the Jaipur, Amritsar, Dehradun and Chandigarh links may or may not be running in the month you travel.

How reliable are flights to Kullu, and why are they cancelled?

Bhuntar is one of the harder airports in India to fly into. The runway lies in a narrow valley with peaks several thousand feet higher on both sides, and approaches are flown visually in daylight. Pilots need a clear view of the valley; low cloud, rain, haze or snowfall at the airport, or dense fog at Delhi in the early morning, is enough to cancel or turn a flight back. The Tribune’s archive is full of examples: in February 2023 flights were grounded for two consecutive days by bad weather, stranding among others an 84-year-old Canadian visitor who ended up taking a taxi from Chandigarh. In the monsoon of 2025 the airline simply cut most of its schedule.

Our rule of thumb from running trips in the valley for seven years: in October, November, March and April the flight operates most days; in December and January morning fog at Delhi and snow at Bhuntar cause regular disruption; in July and August do not count on it at all. Even on a good day, build slack. If your international connection or a non-refundable hotel depends on the Kullu flight landing, you are taking a risk the airline will not compensate beyond a refund.

Season Typical weather on the route Flight outlook What we suggest
October–November Clear skies, dry; Manali highs 15–20 °C, cold nights Best of the year Fly in, keep a car as backup
December–February Delhi fog at dawn; snow spells in the valley most years Frequent delays and cancellations Prefer Chandigarh + car, or overnight Volvo
March–June Mostly clear; afternoon storms in April–May; peak crowds May–June Good; fares highest Fly if the fare is acceptable; book early
July–September Monsoon cloud and rain; landslides on roads too Poor; schedule often cut Road via Chandigarh in daylight; allow an extra day

Seasonal pattern based on IMD climate normals for the region and reported disruptions (The Tribune, 2023–2026); individual days vary, so check the forecast 48 hours out.

What are the alternatives to flying into Kullu–Manali Airport?

Chandigarh airport (IXC) plus car. This is the most dependable combination. Chandigarh has dozens of daily jet flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities, plus a few international services, and it is about 300 km from Manali. The road runs via Kiratpur, Bilaspur, Sundernagar and Mandi, then through the Pandoh–Aut tunnels and up the Kullu valley. Four-laning has cut the journey substantially since 2023; plan 7–8 hours with a lunch stop, more in peak season or after heavy rain. Land by 09:00 and you are in Manali for dinner. Our cab routes include this transfer, and the drive passes close to our office, so we can break it with a meal in Bilaspur.

Delhi plus overnight Volvo. Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) and private operators run air-conditioned Volvo coaches from Delhi’s Kashmere Gate ISBT and Majnu ka Tilla every evening, leaving between about 17:00 and 19:00 and arriving in Manali between 06:00 and 08:00; HRTC Volvo fares were about ₹1,500–1,800 (US$16–19) in October 2026 listings. The ride is 12–14 hours and the last four are on mountain roads, so it is not restful, but it is reliable and cheap, and it delivers you to the Manali bus stand rather than an airport 52 km away. Our Delhi to Manali guide compares every option in detail.

Delhi plus private car. About 540 km and 10–12 hours with stops. Expensive compared with the bus, but door to door, flexible, and the only option that lets you stop in Chandigarh or Mandi, or divert to Shimla. See our Delhi to Manali taxi page for how we run it, including the split option of the 07:40 Kalka Shatabdi to Chandigarh (arrives 10:59) and a car from there, which is the comfortable middle ground.

Other airports. Dharamshala’s Gaggal airport (DHM) is about 240 km from Manali, 6–7 hours by road, and is useful only if you are combining Dharamshala with Manali. Shimla’s Jubbarhatti airport has had an on-off Delhi link; do not plan around it. Amritsar (ATQ), with its international flights, is about 400 km and 9–10 hours from Manali, practical if you are starting a Punjab–Himachal loop.

Should you fly into Kullu or out of it?

If you fly once, fly out. Arriving by road lets you acclimatise to the hills gradually, see the valley, and absorb a late start without consequence. Departing by air from Bhuntar at 08:05 puts you in Delhi before 10:00 with the whole day ahead, and if the morning flight is cancelled you are at least in India with options: a taxi to Chandigarh for an afternoon flight, or the night bus. Flying in and finding yourself stuck at Delhi airport at 06:00 with a cancelled flight and a Manali hotel waiting is the worse version of the same problem.

Whatever you choose, book a refundable or changeable fare, keep two spare hours before any onward connection in Delhi, and carry your essentials in cabin baggage; the ATR has a small cabin and tight weight limits, so check Alliance Air’s allowance before you pack.

What should you know about Atal Tunnel, Rohtang and winter access?

The airport question is really an access question, and Manali’s access has changed. The 9 km Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang range, opened in October 2020, keeps the Manali–Lahaul road open through the year, with short closures during heavy snowfall for clearance. Day trips from Manali to Sissu and the Chandra valley run in all months, snow permitting. Rohtang Pass itself (3,978 m) is a seasonal road that usually closes by mid-November and reopens around May, and needs a permit in season; our Rohtang permit and road status page carries the current position. The Kunzum La road from Manali to Spiti has been closed by snow since 15 October 2026 and its reopening date is unconfirmed; winter Spiti is reached from the Shimla side instead, as described in our winter Spiti guide.

From the airport side, Bhuntar at 1,089 m rarely sees snow settle, but Manali at 2,050 m does from December onwards, and the road between them can be slow after a storm. If snow is the reason you are coming, see our Himachal snowfall outlook for winter 2026–27, and for the busiest fortnight of the year, our Christmas and New Year Manali packages explain how we plan transport around weather.

A sample plan: Delhi to Manali and back using the airport once

  1. Day 1 – Delhi to Chandigarh to Manali by road. 07:40 Kalka Shatabdi from New Delhi (or a morning flight), car from Chandigarh at 11:30, lunch near Bilaspur, arrive Manali by 19:00.
  2. Days 2–4 – Manali and around. Old Manali and Hadimba temple, Solang valley, a day through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, Naggar castle and the Roerich gallery; or a night in Kasol or Tirthan if you prefer quieter valleys.
  3. Day 5 – Fly out. Leave Manali 05:30, Bhuntar 07:00, 9I804 to Delhi at about 08:05, landing before 10:00. If the flight is cancelled, your driver continues to Chandigarh for an afternoon flight, or you take the evening Volvo.

This is the shape of our standard Himachal tour packages for visitors arriving in Delhi, and it adapts easily if you want to add Shimla on the way in (see Delhi to Shimla) or Dharamshala on the way out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nearest airport to Manali?

Kullu–Manali Airport (KUU) at Bhuntar, 52 km south of Manali and about 1.5 hours by road. It is served only by Alliance Air turboprops from Delhi, usually one morning flight on most days, and it is weather-sensitive. The nearest large airport with reliable jet service is Chandigarh (IXC), about 300 km and 7–8 hours from Manali by car.

Which airlines fly to Kullu–Manali Airport?

Only Alliance Air, using ATR 72 and ATR 42 aircraft. The main route is Delhi–Kullu (9I803) and Kullu–Delhi (9I804), running five days a week in the schedule checked for late October 2026. Links to Jaipur, Amritsar, Dehradun and Chandigarh have operated on and off in 2025 and 2026; check the airline’s live schedule for your dates rather than relying on older guides.

How much does a flight from Delhi to Kullu cost?

Fares are high for a 1 h 20 m flight: The Tribune reported one-way fares of about ₹17,000 on Tuesdays and Sundays and ₹24,400 on other days in May 2026, roughly US$180–260. Prices move with demand and the airline’s schedule changes, so compare with a Delhi–Chandigarh jet fare plus a car, which is usually cheaper for two or more people.

How often are Kullu flights cancelled?

Often enough to plan for it. Bhuntar is a visual-approach valley airport with no night operations, so cloud, rain, snow or Delhi fog cancels or diverts flights. Disruption is common from December to February and through the July–September monsoon, when the airline has cut schedules in past years. October, November and spring are the most dependable months. Always keep a road alternative in mind.

Is it better to fly to Chandigarh or Kullu for Manali?

For reliability, Chandigarh. It has frequent jet flights, and the 300 km drive to Manali takes 7–8 hours on a largely four-lane road via Bilaspur and Mandi. Kullu saves most of that drive when it operates, so it is worth using for the return leg, when a cancellation costs you a long drive rather than a missed holiday. Many visitors do exactly that: road in, fly out.

How do I get from Kullu airport to Manali?

By taxi, about 1.5 hours on NH3 via Kullu and Patlikuhal; allow two hours on busy weekends. Taxis wait outside the terminal, and hotels and local operators will send a car to meet the flight, which is simpler and avoids haggling after an early start. Public buses run along the highway but involve a walk and a change, so they are not practical with luggage.
