Snow activities in Manali at a glance
Snow activities in Manali happen at a few points, not in town. Solang Valley (14 km) has beginner skiing, snow tubing, snow scooter rides and the ropeway. Gulaba and Kothi on the Rohtang road are for snow play and photos. Sissu, just past the Atal Tunnel, often has snow when Solang is bare. Snow is most reliable from late December to February, and police barriers move with it.

Where’s the snow this month?
Manali town sits at about 2,050 m, Solang at 2,560 m, the Atal Tunnel at 3,060 m and Rohtang at 3,978 m. The higher points get snow first: Rohtang and Sissu in October–November, Solang from late December to February.

Which is the best snow point in Manali?
It depends on the month. Sissu, past the Atal Tunnel, gets snow first and keeps it longest; Solang is best from late December to February; Rohtang only in May–June. We check the day’s status for you.
Is there snow in Manali in October or November?
Rarely in town. The first snow usually lands at Rohtang and Sissu; in 2025 it closed Rohtang as early as 9 October. See our Himachal snowfall guide for month-by-month odds, or Manali in November.
Do we need a permit for the Atal Tunnel or Sissu?
No Rohtang permit is needed for the Atal Tunnel. Rohtang Pass itself needs an online permit with a daily cap of 1,200 vehicles — see our Rohtang permit and road status page. After snowfall, police may allow only 4×4 vehicles beyond Solang.
Is Rohtang Pass open in winter?
No. It closes for the season around November–December depending on snow (in 2025 the Kullu administration allowed vehicles up to 10 December, 9 am–3 pm). It reopened on 17 May in 2026. Check the permit portal for the current days.
Where can we rent a snow suit and boots?
At roadside shops near Palchan, Kothi, Solang and Gulaba. Check the boot size and that the gloves are waterproof before paying. Gear can be included in your quote.
Are snow activities safe for kids?
Tubing, sledging and snow play are fine for kids with an adult. Skiing is for beginners only with an instructor, and snow scooter age limits are set by the operator on the day.
Can our own car go to the snow points?
On clear days, yes, up to where the police allow. After fresh snow only 4×4 vehicles with chains may be allowed, so we arrange a local SUV or 4×4 with your package.
