How many days are enough for a Kerala trip?
Six days is the sweet spot because the classic loop has four stops and the drives between them are 3 to 4 hours each. Shorter trips still work if you cut a stop rather than squeezing the same four into fewer days.

How much does a Kerala trip cost in 2026-27?
Kerala has no fixed package price, and any site that quotes one number without asking your dates is guessing. On a private trip the cost is decided by five things:
- Hotel category: 3-star or boutique stays (as in Kerala Highlights) versus 4-star and heritage resorts (as in Kerala Royal Tour).
- The houseboat: a private one-bedroom boat for a couple costs far more per person than a shared cruise, and AC that runs all night costs more than AC that runs only at night-time hours. Check which one your quote includes.
- The car: a sedan suits two to three people; a family of four to six needs an Innova Crysta, which raises the transport cost.
- The month: 20 December to 5 January and long weekends are the peak; June to September monsoon rates are the lowest.

One date to plan around: the Sabarimala pilgrimage season runs from 16 November 2026 to 20 January 2027 (Mandala Pooja on 27 December, Makaravilakku on 14 January). Thekkady’s twin town Kumily and the roads through Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts carry heavy pilgrim traffic in this period, and mid-range hotels around Kumily fill up. It does not stop a Kerala trip, but book Thekkady early and allow an extra hour on that drive.
Top places to visit in Kerala (and the practical details)
Munnar
Tea estates at 1,500–1,800 m, Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and the Tea Museum. Eravikulam National Park (Rajamala) is the place to see the Nilgiri tahr; entry for Indian adults has been around ₹125 recently, tickets are sold at the counter and the park closes each year in the February–March calving season. Pack a light jacket: Munnar evenings are cold even in summer.
Thekkady (Periyar)
The Periyar Lake boat ride inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve is the main event. Boats run in five slots a day, roughly 7:30 am to 5 pm, each about 90 minutes; KTDC lists the fare at about ₹450 per person including GST, plus the reserve entry fee, and the morning slots give the best chance of seeing elephants on the shore. Book online a few days ahead in season. Spice-plantation walks, a Kalaripayattu martial-arts show and Kathakali shows run in Kumily town in the evening.
Alleppey (Alappuzha)
The houseboat night. Private boats board around noon and return around 9 am the next morning, with lunch, tea, dinner and breakfast cooked on board. Ask three questions before you book: is the boat private or shared, how many hours does the AC run, and does it cruise the open Vembanad Lake or only the canals. Kochi (Cochin)
Fort Kochi is the usual start and end point: the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, the Dutch Palace in Mattancherry and a Kathakali performance in the evening (make-up starts an hour before the show and is worth watching). The airport (COK) is about 40 km north of the city, so a late-evening arrival means a Kochi night before you drive to Munnar.
Beaches: Marari, Kovalam, Varkala
Marari is 15 km from Alleppey and the easiest beach night to add. Kovalam and Varkala sit near Thiruvananthapuram, about 4–5 hours south of Alleppey, so they suit 7-day trips that fly out of Trivandrum instead of Kochi.

- Pack light cottons plus a jacket for Munnar; in October–November add a compact umbrella.
- Book the houseboat and the Periyar boat ride in advance for December–January and for the Sabarimala weeks.
- Eat local: appam with stew, Kerala fish curry, puttu, and a banana-leaf sadya if your dates include a festival.
- Mosquito repellent for the backwaters; most houseboats provide nets or AC cabins.
