In short

How do I choose an Ayurveda retreat in Kerala?

Start from Kerala Tourism’s official list of classified Ayurveda centres (Ayur Silver to Ayur Diamond, Green Leaf, Olive Leaf), or a centre with NABH Ayush accreditation. Let the centre’s Ayurveda doctor set the length after a first consultation, and talk to your own doctor before you book. Karkidakam (July–August) is the traditional season. We arrange the car, driver and hotels around it.

Talk to a real person: our team in Himachal answers 9 am–9 pm IST (UTC+5:30), usually within 2 hours. Message us on WhatsApp +91 70874 88961 or email info@suzutravels.com.

How to choose an Ayurveda centre in Kerala — five steps

Kerala has a great many Ayurveda resorts, centres and hospitals. We don’t sell or recommend any of them — this is the checklist we would use ourselves.

  1. Start from the official listKerala Tourism (the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala) publishes a searchable list of Ayurveda centres at keralatourism.org/ayurveda-centres. You can filter by district, destination and classification, and download the list of approved centres.
  2. Read the classificationUnder the revised scheme the Government of Kerala sanctioned in 2019, Ayur Silver is the category with the minimum facilities and Ayur Diamond the one with the highest. The list also shows Green Leaf and Olive Leaf centres. A classification tells you about facilities, not about results.
  3. Check for NABH accreditationIndia’s National Accreditation Board for Hospitals runs an Ayush accreditation programme with the Ministry of Ayush, started in 2009, with standards for Ayurveda hospitals, Panchakarma clinics and wellness centres. Ask the centre whether it is accredited, and for which standard.
  4. Ask who the doctor isIn India only practitioners on the national register may practise Ayurveda. Ask for the doctor’s name, qualification and registration, and whether you will see the same doctor throughout.
  5. Ask what the fee coversConsultation, treatments per day, room, vegetarian meals, yoga, airport transfer. Get it in writing, pay the centre directly and keep its confirmation.

Resort with a spa, Ayurveda centre or hospital?

The word ‘retreat’ covers very different places. Decide which one you want before you compare.

Kind of stay What it usually means What to ask
A holiday hotel with an Ayurveda centre Massages and short treatments while you rest between sightseeing Is the centre on Kerala Tourism’s list? Who gives the treatments?
A dedicated Ayurveda resort or centre A stay built around a doctor’s consultation, a daily treatment plan and a set diet Classification, the doctor, how long the doctor suggests, what a day looks like
An Ayush hospital In-patient treatment; NABH accreditation is open to Ayush hospitals with at least 10 beds Accreditation, who refers you, whether the e-Ayush visa applies
A government institution Kerala Tourism names the Government Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, for ‘authentic treatments under expert care’ Admission process and timings — contact the hospital directly

Treatment fees are set and paid to the centre itself. We take no commission on treatments and don’t recommend a particular centre.

When to go: the monsoon season or the dry months?

Kerala has two rainy seasons — the southwest monsoon arrives in June/July with most of the year’s rain, and the northeast monsoon brings rain in October/November.

Months Weather For an Ayurveda stay
June–August Southwest monsoon, heavy rain Karkidakam (July–August) is the traditional season: Kerala Tourism writes that ‘the body is considered highly receptive to Ayurveda treatments during this period’. Expect rain every day.
October–November Northeast monsoon rains Treatments run; plan sightseeing around showers
December–February Mild and comfortable Kerala’s peak season (November–February) — book early and combine with the backwaters or North India
March–May Hot and humid; coast 25–36 °C (77–97 °F) If you prefer cooler weather, choose December–February; ask the centre how it manages the heat

The UK Foreign Office notes that India’s monsoon usually runs from June to October, with flash flooding and landslides that can occur with limited warning. Check India Meteorological Department (mausam.imd.gov.in) before you travel.

Health first: what to ask your doctor

Ayurveda treatments are not a substitute for medical care from your own doctor. Consult your doctor before you book — especially if you are pregnant, take regular medication or have a health condition — and tell the centre’s doctor about every medicine you take. See CDC or NHS Fit for Travel for India.

Medicines to take home: be careful with herbal medicines you are offered to continue at home. US and Australian health authorities have reported lead in some Ayurvedic products bought abroad (US CDC, 2012; NSW Health, 2014). Show anything you plan to keep taking to your own doctor.

Travel insurance matters on a long stay — read our India travel insurance guide and check whether your policy covers treatment you choose to have.

Which visa for an Ayurveda retreat?

Apply yourself at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware look-alike sites that charge extra. We are not a visa agency.

Holiday with some Ayurveda

A short wellness stay alongside a holiday is usually planned on the e-Tourist visa (30 days, 1 year or 5 years). Indian missions list ‘attending a short-term yoga programme’ among e-Visa purposes.

Treatment is the sole purpose

India has an Ayush visa for a foreigner ‘whose sole purpose is to seek treatment through Ayush systems’, including ‘therapeutic care and wellness’ at an accredited and registered centre. It is on the e-Visa system as the e-Ayush Visa, with an e-Ayush Attendant Visa for a companion.

Not sure which?

Read the purposes listed for each e-Visa type on indianvisaonline.gov.in, or ask the nearest Indian embassy. Our India e-Visa guide explains the steps.

How we arrange the rest of your trip

Our team in Himachal plans everything around the centre you choose. In Kerala we arrange it with local partners we have worked with — one plan, one contact.

What we arrange around your Ayurveda stay: airport transfers, a private car and driver, hotels before and after, and one plan with one contact. Treatment fees are paid to the centre you choose.

Airport to the centre

Pick-up at Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode airport and the drive to your centre, timed to your flight.

A private car and driver

Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip. Use the car for the backwaters, Fort Kochi or the tea hills before or after your stay.

Before and after

Hotel nights, a houseboat night or our 8-day Kerala tour — and the Golden Triangle or Rishikesh if you are also going north.

Honest advice

We tell you what we know about roads, weather and timings, and we never push a particular centre.

What to expect when you arrive

At a dedicated centre, expect to begin with a consultation with its Ayurveda doctor, who suggests a treatment plan and how long it should run. Ask for this plan in writing, with the number of treatment days, before you commit to a long stay.

Food is part of the programme: Kerala Tourism notes that Ayurveda recommends ‘a healthy vegetarian diet’, and in the monsoon month a herbal rice gruel (Karkidaka kanji) is traditional. Panchakarma, which Kerala Tourism describes as ‘a therapeutic way extolled by Ayurveda, for eliminating toxic elements from the body’, is usually a longer, structured programme — ask the doctor whether it suits you.

Leave a free day at each end of the stay: one to arrive and rest, one before a long flight home.

Prices

Prices

Your Kerala trip is quoted on request — the number of days, hotels before and after, the car and the month change the total. Treatment fees are paid to the centre. You get a day-by-day plan with a US-dollar total before you pay anything. You can add Kerala to the Golden Triangle, which has published prices:

Option From What it covers
Kerala — transfers, car and driver, hotels around your Ayurveda stay on request Airport pick-up and drop, private car and driver, hotel nights with breakfast before and after the centre; treatment fees not included
Golden Triangle — 4 days (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) from US$299 Per person, two sharing: private air-conditioned car and driver, hotels with breakfast, airport pick-up and drop, local guides at the main monuments
Golden Triangle — classic 6 days from US$449 Per person, two sharing: private air-conditioned car and driver, hotels with breakfast, airport pick-up and drop, local guides at the main monuments

Prices are per person in US dollars, indicative for the season shown, and confirmed on your quote. Taxes included; international flights excluded.

Booking terms (20% deposit, 48-hour refund window) are stated once, under Plan it with a local.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask

What is the best time for an Ayurveda retreat in Kerala?

Traditionally the monsoon month of Karkidakam (July–August): Kerala Tourism writes that the body is considered highly receptive to Ayurveda treatments then. Expect daily rain. December–February is mild and comfortable and Kerala’s peak season, a good time to combine a stay with sightseeing.

How long should an Ayurveda retreat be?

There is no single answer: the centre’s Ayurveda doctor suggests the length after a first consultation, and longer programmes such as Panchakarma take more time than a few massages. Ask for the plan, with the number of treatment days, in writing before you book your flights.

How do I know an Ayurveda centre in Kerala is genuine?

Look it up on Kerala Tourism’s official list of classified Ayurveda centres (keralatourism.org/ayurveda-centres), ask whether it holds NABH Ayush accreditation, and ask for the doctor’s name, qualification and registration. A listing is a starting point, not a guarantee of results.

Do I need a special visa for Ayurveda treatment in India?

If treatment is the sole purpose of your trip, India has a separate Ayush visa, available as the e-Ayush Visa for accredited centres. A short wellness stay during a holiday is usually planned on the e-Tourist visa. Check the purposes on the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware look-alike sites. We are not a visa agency.

What is Panchakarma?

Kerala Tourism describes Panchakarma as ‘a therapeutic way extolled by Ayurveda, for eliminating toxic elements from the body’. It is a structured programme planned by the centre’s doctor, usually with a set diet. Ask the doctor whether it suits you, and talk to your own doctor first.

Is Ayurveda safe?

Ayurveda is not a substitute for care from your own doctor. Consult your doctor before you book, tell the centre’s doctor about every medicine you take, and be careful with herbal medicines to take home — US and Australian health authorities have reported lead in some Ayurvedic products bought abroad.

Can I combine an Ayurveda retreat with a Kerala tour or the Golden Triangle?

Yes. You can spend a few days on the backwaters or in the tea hills before or after your stay, or start in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur and fly south. We plan the car, driver and hotels around the dates your centre gives you.

Do you book the Ayurveda centre for me?

No — you choose the centre and pay it directly, so you deal with its doctor yourself. We take no commission on treatments. We arrange the airport transfers, private car and driver, and the hotels and sightseeing around your stay.
