Why visit Trivandrum, and how many days do you need?

Thiruvananthapuram, still called Trivandrum by most travellers and by the airport code TRV, is Kerala’s capital and the southern gateway to the state. It gets far fewer tourists than Kochi or Munnar, which is exactly why we like sending guests here: the temple town is calm, the beaches at Kovalam are a 30-minute drive, and the Western Ghats at Ponmudi are a morning away. It also pairs naturally with Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and with Varkala up the coast.

In our experience, two full days cover the city and Kovalam comfortably, and a third day lets you choose between Ponmudi (hills), Poovar (backwater estuary) or Varkala (cliff beach). If you are coming for Ayurveda, add at least five to seven nights at a Kovalam resort; our Ayurveda retreat guide explains what a proper panchakarma programme involves.

Trivandrum is also the natural end point of a longer Kerala loop. Our 7-day Kerala itinerary runs Kochi – Munnar – Thekkady – Alleppey – Kovalam, and the list of 25 Kerala tourist places puts Trivandrum in context with the rest of the state.

Trivandrum tourist places at a glance

Place Distance from city centre Time needed Notes (checked 30 Oct 2026)
Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple In East Fort, city centre 1–2 h Hindus only; dress code enforced; darshan in short slots, roughly 03:15–12:00 and 17:00–19:20 (Holidify listing)
Kuthiramalika (Puthenmalika) Palace Next to the temple 45 min Wooden palace of Swathi Thirunal; usually closed Mondays – check at the gate
Napier Museum, Sree Chitra Art Gallery, Zoo About 3 km, Museum Road Half day About 10:00–16:30, closed Monday, ₹20 adult / ₹10 child for the complex (DTPC); zoo ticket separate, check at counter
Shanghumukham Beach About 8 km, beside the airport 1 h at sunset City beach, mermaid sculpture; not for swimming
Veli Tourist Village About 10 km 2 h Lagoon meets sea; pedal boats, floating bridge, children’s park
Kovalam About 16 km south Half day to several nights Lighthouse Beach for swimming and cafés, Hawa Beach, Samudra Beach quieter
Poovar About 30 km south Half day Boat through the Neyyar estuary to the golden sand bar; floating cottages
Neyyar Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary About 30 km east Half day Reservoir boating, lion safari park, crocodile farm; boating depends on water level
Ponmudi About 60 km north-east Full day Roughly 1 h 45 min drive with 22 hairpins; Golden Valley, Kallar, Meenmutty falls (Kerala Tourism)
Varkala About 40 km north Full day or overnight Cliff, Papanasam Beach, Janardanaswamy Temple
Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu) About 90 km south Full day Vivekananda Rock, Thiruvalluvar statue, sunset point; 2.5–3 h each way

Distances are road distances from the Statue or East Fort area and are rounded; a Trivandrum city cab or auto-rickshaw covers the inner ring, while the outer ring is easier with a car for the day.

What should you know before visiting Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple?

The temple of Lord Vishnu reclining on the serpent Anantha is the reason the city exists – Thiruvananthapuram means ‘the city of Lord Anantha’. It is run by the Travancore royal family’s trust and became world news in 2011 when its underground vaults were found to hold an enormous treasure. The seven-storey gopuram, the 18-foot deity viewed through three doors and the stone corridor with 365 carved pillars are what you will remember.

The rules matter here more than at most Kerala temples. Only Hindus are admitted. Men must wear a mundu (dhoti) and remove shirts; women wear a saree, set-mundu, half-saree or long skirt and blouse, and salwar kameez is now generally accepted at the entrance (Holidify listing, checked 30 Oct 2026). Trousers, jeans and shorts are not allowed for anyone, and mundus can be hired just outside the gate for a small charge. Phones and cameras must be deposited at the counter. Darshan runs in short slots through the morning, roughly from 03:15 (Nirmalya darshan) to about noon, and again in the evening from about 17:00 to 19:20; the exact slots change for festivals, so confirm the day you go.

The easiest plan is the first evening slot at about 17:00, followed by a walk around the temple tank (Padma Theertham) and the Chalai Bazaar lanes behind East Fort. Kuthiramalika Palace, with its 122 carved wooden horses under the eaves, is next door and is best combined with the same visit.

Which Trivandrum museums and city sights are worth a morning?

The Museum Road compound in the north of the city holds four attractions in one green campus, which makes it the easiest morning in Trivandrum. The Napier Museum (1880) is an Indo-Saracenic building by Robert Chisholm with bronzes, ivory carvings and a Kathakali gallery. The Sree Chitra Art Gallery next door has the largest public collection of Raja Ravi Varma paintings along with Nicholas Roerich’s Himalayan canvases. The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo (1857) is one of India’s oldest, with a shaded, walkable layout. The Natural History Museum completes the set.

The complex opens about 10:00 and closes at 16:30, is shut on Mondays, and tickets are sold only at the counter – ₹20 for adults and ₹10 for children for the museum (DTPC Thiruvananthapuram, checked 30 Oct 2026); the zoo and art gallery have their own small tickets, so carry cash. Allow three hours for all four buildings.

Other city stops worth 30–45 minutes each: the Kanakakunnu Palace grounds beside the museum (open-air shows in season), Kerala Legislature’s Niyamasabha complex (exterior), the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple (famous for the women’s Pongala festival in February–March) and the Connemara Market on MG Road for spices and banana chips. The Magic Planet science park at Kazhakootam, about 15 km out, suits families with children.

Kovalam, Poovar and the beaches: where should you stay?

Kovalam is a 30–40 minute drive south and remains the beach most Indian families choose. Lighthouse Beach, under the red-and-white Vizhinjam lighthouse, has the cafés, lifeguards and the gentlest swimming; the lighthouse itself opens to visitors for a small ticket and gives the best view of the three coves. Hawa Beach is the fishing cove in the middle, and Samudra Beach to the north is quieter, with the Ashok and Leela resorts above it. Red flags mean no swimming – the undertow is real from May to September.

Poovar, another 15 km south, is a different mood: a motorboat ride through the Neyyar estuary and mangroves to a golden sand bar where river meets sea. Floating cottages here (the Poovar Island Resort group is the best known) are popular for honeymoons. We usually suggest a Poovar boat trip as a half-day excursion from Kovalam rather than a separate base, unless you want the floating-cottage experience itself.

For the budget conscious, Shanghumukham Beach by the airport is where locals go for the sunset and a plate of fried fish; it is not a swimming beach. Veli Tourist Village, between Shanghumukham and Kazhakootam, has pedal boats on the lagoon and a floating bridge, and is a good two-hour stop with children.

Which day trips from Trivandrum are worth it: Ponmudi, Varkala or Kanyakumari?

Ponmudi is the Western Ghats day trip. It sits at about 1,100 m, around 60 km from the city, and the drive takes roughly 1 hour 45 minutes (Kerala Tourism FAQ), the last 10 km being 22 numbered hairpin bends through tea and cardamom. Stop at Kallar river and Meenmutty waterfalls on the way up; the top has Golden Valley, an echo point and KTDC’s hill resort for lunch. Mornings are clearer; by afternoon mist rolls in from October onwards. Private vehicles are stopped at the lower gate on busy weekends and a KSRTC shuttle runs the hairpins, so leave the city by 07:30.

Varkala, about 40 km north on the coast, is the opposite: a red laterite cliff with a line of cafés above Papanasam Beach, where Hindus perform ancestral rites. It makes an easy day trip by car or by passenger train to Varkala Sivagiri station, but many guests prefer a night or two; our separate guide to Varkala tourist places covers Kappil, Anjengo Fort and Sivagiri Mutt.

Kanyakumari, about 90 km south in Tamil Nadu, is the land’s end where three seas meet, with the Vivekananda Rock Memorial ferry and the 133-foot Thiruvalluvar statue. It is a long day – 2.5 to 3 hours each way – so we schedule it as the last day with an evening sunset and a late return, or as an overnight before flying out of Trivandrum.

How do you reach Trivandrum and get around?

Trivandrum International Airport is unusually close to the city, about 6 km from the Statue junction and 15–20 km from Kovalam, with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and the Gulf. By train, Thiruvananthapuram Central (TVC) is the terminus for most long-distance services: the daily 12626 Kerala Express leaves New Delhi at 20:10 and arrives 21:50 on the third day, a journey of about 49 h 40 min (ConfirmTkt timetable, checked 30 Oct 2026). From Mumbai and Bengaluru there are faster overnight options; see our guide to Indian train classes before booking 2A versus 3A for a 40-hour ride.

Within the city, auto-rickshaws run on meter more reliably than in most Indian cities, and app cabs work well. For Ponmudi, Poovar or Kanyakumari, a car with driver for the day is the practical choice; KSRTC buses also serve all three from the Thampanoor central stand next to the railway station, with Ponmudi buses leaving in the early morning. If you are connecting northwards, KSRTC and the Kochi-bound trains take about 4–5 hours to Ernakulam.

When is the best time to visit Trivandrum?

October to February is the pleasant season: daytime highs around 30–32°C, low humidity after the north-east monsoon fades in November, and calm seas at Kovalam. December and January are peak for Kovalam resorts, so book early. March to May is hot and sticky, though Kovalam still works for early-morning swims. The south-west monsoon runs June to August with heavy rain; it is the traditional Ayurveda season and resort rates drop sharply. Our best time to visit Kerala guide has the month-by-month detail, and Kerala in December covers the Christmas–New Year rush.

Festival dates to plan around: Attukal Pongala (February–March, the city’s streets fill with women cooking offerings), the two annual festivals at Padmanabhaswamy ending in the Arattu procession to Shanghumukham Beach (March–April and October–November), and Onam in August–September, when the city hosts a week of cultural programmes.

Frequently asked questions

Can non-Hindus enter Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple?

No. The temple admits only Hindus, and the rule is enforced at the gate. Everyone else can walk around the outer walls, see the gopuram from the temple tank side and visit Kuthiramalika Palace next door. Visitors who are admitted must follow the dress code: mundu for men with no shirt, saree, set-mundu or salwar kameez for women, and no trousers or jeans.

How many days are enough for Trivandrum?

Two full days cover the city – temple, palace, museum compound, Shanghumukham – plus a half day at Kovalam. Add a third day for Ponmudi, Poovar or Varkala. If you are combining it with Kanyakumari or an Ayurveda stay in Kovalam, plan four to seven days. Most travellers add Trivandrum to the end of a Kochi–Munnar–Alleppey loop.

What is the distance from Trivandrum to Kovalam and Ponmudi?

Kovalam is about 16 km south of the city centre, a 30–40 minute drive and 15–20 km from the airport. Ponmudi is about 60 km north-east and takes roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by car, including 22 hairpin bends on the final climb. Poovar is about 30 km south, Varkala about 40 km north and Kanyakumari about 90 km south.

Is the Napier Museum open on Mondays?

No. The Napier Museum, Sree Chitra Art Gallery and the zoo compound are closed on Mondays and open about 10:00–16:30 on other days, with tickets sold only at the counter – ₹20 for adults and ₹10 for children for the museum, per DTPC Thiruvananthapuram as checked on 30 October 2026. Allow about three hours for the whole campus.

Which is the best beach near Trivandrum for families?

Kovalam’s Lighthouse Beach, with lifeguards, cafés and the gentlest surf in the season, is the practical choice for families, and Samudra Beach is quieter if you want a resort stay. Shanghumukham is a sunset beach, not a swimming one. Poovar’s sand bar is reached by boat and is better as an excursion than for swimming. Avoid the sea when red flags are up, mainly May to September.

How do I reach Trivandrum from Delhi by train?

The daily 12626 Kerala Express leaves New Delhi at 20:10 and reaches Thiruvananthapuram Central at 21:50 on the third day, about 49 hours 40 minutes (ConfirmTkt, checked 30 October 2026). Flying takes about 3.5 hours nonstop. If you want the train experience without three days aboard, fly to Kochi and take a 4–5 hour train or car down the coast.
