Short answer: Vagamon’s tourist places are all within 10 km of the small town at about 1,100 m: the grass meadows and planted pine forest on the Elappara road, the three hills of Thangal Para (Muslim shrine), Murugan Mala (Hindu rock temple) and Kurisumala (Christian monastery), Vagamon lake, Mottakunnu sunset point, Marmala waterfall and the paragliding slopes at Kolahalamedu. One full day covers the ten places below; Kochi is roughly 100 km and 3–4 hours away.

Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)

  • Must-see: the meadows (Mottakunnu and the Vagamon hills), the pine forest, Thangal Para and Kurisumala.
  • Paragliding: tandem flights from Kolahalamedu October to March, about ₹3,000–4,500 per person, 10–15 minutes in the air (Kerala Tourism adventure page).
  • Vagamon lake: pedal boats about ₹100–200, roughly 09:00–17:00; a 20-minute lakeside walk.
  • Three faiths on three hills: Thangal Para, Murugan Mala and Kurisumala, all within 5 km of each other.
  • Best months: September to February; the meadows are greenest August–November, the sky clearest December–February.
  • Getting there: Kochi airport about 100 km (3–4 hours); Kottayam railway station roughly 60–65 km; KSRTC buses from Kottayam and Erattupetta.
  • Combine with: Thekkady (70 km) or Munnar (95 km); Vagamon is the quieter alternative or the stop between the two.

Where is Vagamon, and why go there instead of Munnar?

Vagamon sits on the Idukki–Kottayam border at about 1,100 m, a hill station of grass-covered hills, tea and cardamom estates and a planted pine wood, much smaller and quieter than Munnar. It became a destination in the last twenty years, after National Geographic Traveler listed it among places to see, and it still has no big bazaar, no traffic jams at viewpoints and no long queues. In our experience it suits couples, families with small children and anyone who wants a slow day in the hills rather than a sightseeing circuit.

Compared with Munnar, Vagamon is lower (1,100 m against 1,500–1,600 m), warmer by a few degrees, closer to Kottayam and the backwaters, and shorter on “named” sights; there is no national park or tea museum. Compared with Thekkady, it has no wildlife boat. Its appeal is the landscape itself: open meadows you can walk across, a pine forest you can picnic in, and the three hills of three faiths within a few kilometres of each other. For first-time Kerala visitors we still recommend Munnar (see our Munnar tourist places guide); Vagamon is the second-visit hill station or the stop that breaks the Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey triangle.

From north India, fly to Kochi and drive about 100 km (3–4 hours) via Pala and Erattupetta, or take the Kerala Express to Kottayam, roughly 60–65 km away, and a taxi or KSRTC bus from there; buses also run from Erattupetta, the junction town at the foot of the hill. Thekkady is about 70 km east via Kuttikkanam and Munnar about 95 km north via Thodupuzha or the Elappara estate road, so Vagamon fits naturally between any two of Kochi, Thekkady and Munnar.

Distances are approximate from the Vagamon junction; the sights are close enough that an auto for the day or a slow walk covers most of them. Paragliding figures are from the Kerala Tourism adventure page checked on 30 October 2026; lake boat rates and park tickets are small and change with the season, so treat them as a guide.

What are the meadows and the pine forest actually like?

The meadows are what you came for: a chain of bare, rounded hills covered in short grass, with no trees and no fences, where you can walk to the top of one rise and see the next ten. The locals call the main cluster Mottakunnu (“bald hills”), and the ridge on the Elappara side is where the paragliders launch. In the monsoon and just after (August to November) the grass is a saturated green and the clouds roll through at head height; by February it has turned gold and the views are longer. Go in the early morning for mist and at sunset for the light; midday is hot and shadeless. There is no entry fee, but respect the fenced estate boundaries and do not drive on the grass.

The pine forest, 3 km from town on the Elappara road, is a plantation of tall pines on a slope above a stream, planted decades ago as a trial crop and now a picnic ground. It is small enough to walk through in half an hour and photogenic in low light. Weekends bring crowds and food stalls at the gate; weekdays it is nearly empty. A small ticket is charged at the entrance. Below the pines, the road continues through the Vagamon tea estates to Elappara and on to Peermade and Thekkady, a drive that is a sight in itself.

Which are the three hills of three faiths?

Within about 5 km of each other stand three hills that give Vagamon its reputation for harmony. Thangal Para is a vast rounded boulder perched on the hillside with the dargah (shrine) of Sheikh Fariduddin, a Sufi saint said to have come from Afghanistan, beside it; the rock is the viewpoint, looking down to the Kottayam plains and, on a clear day, far towards the coast. Cover shoulders and legs at the shrine. Murugan Mala has a Murugan (Kartikeya) temple cut into the rock at the top of a short climb, with a stone image carved into the hillside and a view across the meadows. Kurisumala, “hill of the cross”, has fourteen Stations of the Cross up a steep path to a summit cross, climbed by thousands of pilgrims on Good Friday, and the Kurisumala Ashram, a Trappist (Cistercian) monastery founded in 1958 by Belgian and Indian monks that runs a dairy farm. The monastery keeps hours of silence; visitors may attend prayers and buy milk and cheese but should not wander the cloister.

All three can be done in one morning by auto or car. The hills are also good short walks if you have children who want to climb something.

What else is there to do in Vagamon?

  • Paragliding at Kolahalamedu: Vagamon is Kerala’s main paragliding site, and the state has hosted international festivals and competitions on these slopes in recent years (Kerala Tourism newsletter). Tandem flights with licensed pilots run from October to March, weather permitting, for about ₹3,000–4,500 per person with 10–15 minutes airborne (Kerala Tourism adventure page, checked 30 Oct 2026). Flights do not go in rain, low cloud or strong wind, so keep a flexible morning. Confirm the operator’s licence and insurance before you pay.
  • Vagamon lake: a small artificial lake a kilometre from the junction with pedal and row boats (about ₹100–200), a children’s park and a 20-minute lakeside path. An easy hour with kids.
  • Marmala waterfall: about 12 km down the Teekoy road, a 30–40 m fall in private estate forest with a short, slippery path from the road; full and loud from July to December, thin in April. No swimming at the base when the flow is strong.
  • Adventure park: ziplines across a valley, a rope course, archery and off-road jeep rides on the meadows, run by private operators near the town; tickets per activity.
  • Ulippooni: a forested stretch behind the estates with birds and the occasional deer or wild boar; go with a local guide early in the morning rather than on your own.
  • Mundakayam ghat and Parunthumpara: on the Kuttikkanam road towards Thekkady, a cliff-edge viewpoint over the plains and the “eagle rock” ridge; combine them with the drive to Thekkady.

How does Vagamon fit into a Kerala trip?

The usual plan is one night, two at most. On a Kochi–Vagamon–Thekkady–Alleppey route, you reach Vagamon by lunch on day one, see the lake and pine forest in the afternoon and the sunset from the meadows, do the three hills and a paraglide the next morning, and drive the 70 km to Thekkady after lunch; our Thekkady tourist places guide takes over from there. On a Munnar–Vagamon–Kottayam–Alleppey route, Vagamon breaks the long descent from the hills to the backwaters and brings you out near Kumarakom (see Alleppey tourist places). As a standalone weekend from Kochi, it is a 3–4 hour drive each way with a full day in between.

Our 7-day Kerala itinerary and 5-day Kerala trip plan use Munnar as the hill stop, but we swap Vagamon in for travellers who have done Munnar before or want fewer crowds; ask us for a variant. For the full list of destinations, see Kerala tourist places; for a longer south-Indian loop that includes these hills, our South India itinerary.

When should you visit Vagamon, and where should you stay?

September to February is the window: the meadows are green after the monsoon from September to November, and the skies are clearest and the nights coolest (10–15°C) from December to February. Paragliding runs October to March. March to May is warm and dry, with brown grass and haze, but still cooler than the plains and fine for the hills and the lake. June to August is heavy monsoon; the landscape is at its most dramatic but the meadows are often inside the cloud, the Marmala road is slippery and no flights go. Christmas–New Year and long weekends bring the only crowds the town sees, and hotel rates rise by about a quarter. The state-wide picture is in our best time to visit Kerala guide.

Stay in a homestay or small resort on the meadows or the Elappara road for views (the Vagamon Heights and the Winter Vale are well-known examples of the area, named as references, not partners), or at the KTDC-run property near the lake for a budget option. Food is simple Kerala fare at the junction and in the homestays; buy fresh tea, cardamom and Kurisumala cheese to take home. For what the whole trip costs, see our Kerala trip cost guide, and for packages and quotes, Kerala tour packages.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main tourist places in Vagamon?

The grass meadows and Mottakunnu sunset point, the pine forest, Thangal Para boulder and shrine, Murugan Mala rock temple, Kurisumala hill and monastery, Vagamon lake, the Kolahalamedu paragliding slopes, Marmala waterfall, Ulippooni forest and the adventure park with ziplines. All are within about 12 km of the town.

How far is Vagamon from Kochi and Kottayam?

Kochi airport is roughly 100 km and 3–4 hours by road via Pala and Erattupetta. Kottayam, the nearest major railway station with Kerala Express stops, is about 60–65 km and 1.5–2 hours. Thekkady is about 70 km east and Munnar about 95 km north, so Vagamon sits between the main Kerala hill stops.

Is paragliding available in Vagamon, and what does it cost?

Yes. Tandem paragliding runs from the Kolahalamedu meadows from October to March, weather permitting, for about ₹3,000–4,500 per person with roughly 10–15 minutes in the air and an hour or two in total. Flights are cancelled in rain, cloud or strong wind, so keep a spare morning and check the pilot’s licence before paying.

Which is better, Vagamon or Munnar?

Munnar has more to see: Eravikulam National Park, tea museums, Top Station and a full two days of sights. Vagamon is smaller, quieter and lower, with open meadows, a pine forest and three sacred hills that take one day. First-time Kerala visitors should choose Munnar; returning visitors or those wanting a slow, crowd-free stop should choose Vagamon.

How many days are enough for Vagamon?

One night and one full day cover the meadows, pine forest, lake, the three hills and a paragliding flight. Two nights let you add Marmala waterfall, an estate walk and a lazy afternoon, which is how most couples use it. It also works as a lunch-and-sunset stop between Munnar or Kochi and Thekkady.

What is the best time to visit Vagamon?

September to February. The meadows are greenest from September to November after the monsoon, and December to February has the clearest skies, cool nights of 10–15°C and the paragliding season. March to May is warm and dry, and June to August is heavy rain with the hills often in cloud and no flights.
