Kerala DMC for Travel Agents: B2B Guide to the 2026-27 Season

What a Kerala DMC handles for travel agents in 2026-27: choosing between four airports, houseboat rules, Munnar’s NH-85 road works, the Eravikulam closure and the Sabarimala season.

A Kerala DMC is the local ground partner that runs your client’s trip once they land in Kerala: airport pick-up from the right airport, hotel and houseboat contracting, a driver who knows the ghat roads to Munnar and Thekkady, sightseeing, permits and on-trip problem solving, all billed to you at net rates so you add your own margin. For the 2026-27 season that job has more moving parts than a brochure suggests. Kerala has four airports, houseboats moor for the night by law, Munnar’s main highway is being widened with single-lane bottlenecks, Eravikulam National Park closes for two months in the middle of the season, and the Sabarimala pilgrimage fills central Kerala’s roads from mid-November to mid-January. This guide is for travel agents and tour operators who sell Kerala and want to get those details right.

What a Kerala DMC does for a travel agent

In Kerala the ground work splits into six jobs:

  • Arrival handling: matching the airport to the itinerary (Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode or Kannur), tracking flights, and having a driver waiting with the client’s name.
  • Hotel and houseboat contracting: allotments in Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, Kumarakom, Kovalam, Varkala and Wayanad, plus houseboats in the right category and the right cruising zone.
  • Transport: sedans and SUVs for couples and families, tempo travellers and coaches for groups, with drivers who drive the Munnar and Thekkady hill roads every week.
  • Sightseeing and tickets: Eravikulam, Periyar lake boating, Kathakali and Kalaripayattu shows, spice plantation walks, Fort Kochi heritage walks and temple visits.
  • Documentation: vouchers, driver details shared before arrival, and a day-by-day itinerary the client can follow without calling you.
  • On-trip problem solving: a rain day, a closed park, a missed connection or a medical issue, handled by someone who is already in Kerala.

Everything goes out under your brand. The DMC stays white-label unless you ask otherwise.

Who handles what: travel agent vs Kerala DMC

The split below is how responsibility usually divides on a Kerala file. Anything not listed should be agreed in writing before confirmation.

Task Travel agent keeps DMC handles
Selling price and margin Sets the selling price, collects from the client and owns the client relationship Quotes a net cost per file
Flights Books flights (an open-jaw Kochi in, Thiruvananthapuram out often works best) and shares the PNR Matches the arrival and departure airports (COK, TRV, CCJ or CNN) to the route
Hotels and houseboats Approves the shortlist with the client Contracts rooms and houseboats, and states the houseboat category, AC hours, private or shared, and registration in writing
Park and boat tickets Tells the DMC which experiences are a must Books Eravikulam entry and the Periyar lake boat with the hotel, and drops Eravikulam for February and March travel
Transport on the ghat roads Nothing to arrange Assigns a driver who knows the Munnar and Thekkady roads and builds in time for NH-85 works and Sabarimala traffic
Vouchers and itinerary Your brand on every document Prepares white-label vouchers, driver details and a day-by-day plan before arrival
Problems during the trip Kept informed Handles rain days, closed parks, missed connections and medical help locally
Invoicing and payment Pays the DMC per file; ask for the payment schedule and cancellation terms in writing with the quote Issues a GST invoice to your business (Suzu Travels is GST-registered, GSTIN 02BLPPK1401E1ZR)

Four airports: match the airport to the route

Most Kerala transfer problems start with the wrong airport on the ticket. Kerala has four international airports, and the right one depends on where the trip starts and ends:

  • Kochi (COK), at Nedumbassery: the default for the classic Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey circuit. Munnar is roughly a 3.5 to 4-hour drive away, and Alleppey around 2 hours.
  • Thiruvananthapuram (TRV): best for Kovalam, Varkala and the south. Ending a trip here saves clients a long drive back north.
  • Kozhikode (CCJ) and Kannur (CNN): the gateways for Wayanad and North Kerala.

A smart way to sell a week in Kerala is an open-jaw ticket: arrive at Kochi, leave from Thiruvananthapuram. The client sees Munnar, Thekkady and the backwaters, ends on the beach at Kovalam or Varkala, and never drives the same road twice. Before you finalise hotels, check the airport code on the ticket. A good DMC will ask for the PNR rather than trust “Kerala” in an enquiry.

Houseboats: what to tell clients before they book

The houseboat night is the part of a Kerala package clients remember, and the part most likely to disappoint if it is sold badly. Brief them on three things.

The cruising day is shorter than clients expect

An overnight houseboat usually boards around midday, cruises through the afternoon, and then moors for the night. Houseboats are not allowed to cruise after dark, so the boat ties up near the bank around sunset and sets off again only briefly the next morning before check-out, typically around 9 am. Clients who expect to “sail through the night” will feel short-changed. Tell them it is a slow afternoon on the water, dinner on deck and a quiet night on the backwaters.

Category and zone matter more than the photos

Houseboats range from basic one-bedroom boats to premium boats with air-conditioning that runs all night, upper decks and glass-fronted lounges. Ask your DMC for the exact category, how many hours the AC runs, and whether the boat is private or a shared multi-bedroom boat. Alleppey (Alappuzha) has the largest fleet and the busiest waterways. Kumarakom on Vembanad Lake is quieter and suits honeymooners. For groups, two or three boats sailing together often work better than one large boat.

Ask for a registered boat

Kerala has tightened inspection of inland passenger vessels in recent years. Your DMC should only put clients on houseboats that carry valid registration and safety equipment, including life jackets in every room. It is a fair question to ask in writing, and a good partner will not mind answering it.

If your client cannot spare a night, a day cruise of a few hours gives most of the backwater experience at a lower cost.

Munnar and Thekkady: road and park updates for 2026-27

NH-85 widening between Kochi and Munnar

The Kochi–Dhanushkodi National Highway (NH-85), the main road up to Munnar, is being widened. In 2026 the works caused single-lane traffic near Old Munnar and around Moolakadai, and during the monsoon the Idukki District Collector asked tourists to avoid the stretch after a landslide near a construction site. Most of the monsoon risk has now passed, but the construction has not. Build an extra hour into the Kochi–Munnar transfer, avoid scheduling an evening activity on arrival day, and expect your driver to use the Old Munnar road via the Devikulam route if the highway is blocked.

Eravikulam National Park closes in February and March

Eravikulam, home of the Nilgiri tahr and the Rajamala tourism zone, normally closes from 1 February to 31 March for the tahr’s calving season. In 2026 the closure order covered exactly those dates. Do not sell an Eravikulam visit for February or March 2027 travel. Offer the tea museum, Mattupetty, Top Station or a tea estate walk instead. For October to January travel, ask your DMC to book entry tickets early, especially for weekends and holiday weeks.

Thekkady and the Periyar boat ride

The Periyar lake boat ride is the reason many clients visit Thekkady, and the trips run on a limited number of boats each day. If the boat matters to your client, have it confirmed with the hotel booking. In the Sabarimala season, the roads around Kumily and Vandiperiyar also carry heavy pilgrim traffic, so give the Munnar–Thekkady drive a generous time window.

Wayanad: sell it with flexibility

Wayanad has had a hard couple of years. After the 2024 landslides in Mundakkai and Chooralmala, the district has repeatedly shut all its tourist centres on red-alert rain days. Visitor caps apply at places like Edakkal Caves and Kuruvadweep, and the Thamarassery ghat road from Kozhikode is prone to disruption in heavy rain. In the dry months from December to March, these problems are much rarer, and Wayanad is a good add-on for families who want plantations, wildlife and cooler weather. Brief clients that sites can close at short notice in wet weather, and ask your DMC for a back-up plan for each day.

Kerala season calendar 2026-27 for agents

Kerala sells all year, but each part of the year suits a different client. Here is how 2026-27 looks for planning:

Period What is happening What it means for your bookings
October 2026 Southwest monsoon over; the northeast monsoon normally arrives in the second half of the month Green landscapes and shoulder rates. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so plan sightseeing for the mornings.
November 2026 Diwali week (around 8 November); Sabarimala Mandala season opens around 17 November North Indian family demand rises for Diwali. Pilgrim traffic builds on central Kerala roads from mid-month.
20 December – 2 January Christmas and New Year; Cochin Carnival in Fort Kochi Kerala’s peak. Premium houseboats, Munnar resorts and Fort Kochi heritage hotels sell out first. Expect minimum stays and compulsory gala dinners at some resorts.
January 2027 Makaravilakku at Sabarimala on 14 January; Pongal and Sankranti holidays Excellent weather. Strong demand from South Indian families and international clients.
February – March 2027 Eravikulam closed for tahr calving; heat builds on the coast Good for MICE, weddings and value-focused FITs. Remove Eravikulam from Munnar itineraries.
April – May 2027 Summer school holidays; Vishu in mid-April Hill stations like Munnar, Thekkady and Wayanad sell well to families. The coast is hot and humid.

The Sabarimala dates follow the Malayalam calendar. Confirm them with the Travancore Devaswom Board close to the season, as they can shift by a day.

Building Kerala packages that sell

Most Kerala enquiries fit one of four shapes.

The classic circuit (6 to 8 days)

Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, then a houseboat night in Alleppey or Kumarakom, ending at Kochi or extending to Kovalam. This is the product most first-time clients want, and it is what our Kerala tour packages are built around. You can re-badge any of them for your own clients.

Honeymoon

Fewer hotel changes, a private premium houseboat, a candlelight dinner and a beach finish. Our 6-day Kerala honeymoon package covering Munnar, Alleppey and Kochi shows a pace that works for couples.

Temple and pilgrimage

Guruvayur, Thrissur, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, often sold to senior groups and families. Temple dress codes are strict, and darshan queues can be long on festival days, so plan one major temple per half-day. The Guruvayoor temple tour is a ready-made itinerary for this market. For Sabarimala itself, devotees book darshan through the Board’s virtual-queue system, and your DMC handles transport to the base at Nilakkal.

Beach and wellness

Kovalam or Varkala with an Ayurveda resort stay. Agree treatment programmes in writing before arrival, as proper Ayurveda courses run over several days.

Why a multi-state DMC beats an aggregator for Kerala

An aggregator sells you a room and a cab. When the Munnar road is blocked or the Periyar boat is full, your client gets a helpline. A DMC gives them a person who knows their booking and can change the day. For agents, the practical advantages are:

  • One partner across your winter range. Suzu Travels handles ground arrangements in Kerala, Goa, Himachal, Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and Rajasthan (see our Rajasthan DMC guide for travel agents). Kerala and Goa make a natural two-state winter combination, and our Goa DMC guide for travel agents covers the Goa side. For snow, our Himachal DMC services page explains how we work with agents in our home state.
  • Net rates you control. You receive a net cost per file and set your own selling price.
  • White-label delivery. Vouchers and itineraries go out in your name.
  • One team accountable for the file. The hotel, the houseboat and the driver are coordinated by the same people, so nothing falls between suppliers.

What to send your DMC for a fast, accurate Kerala quote

A complete brief gets you a usable quote the same day:

  • travel dates, and whether they are flexible;
  • number of adults, children (with ages) and rooms;
  • arrival and departure airports (COK, TRV, CCJ or CNN) and flight times;
  • the circuit you have in mind, or the client’s interests (hills, backwaters, beach, temples, Ayurveda);
  • hotel and houseboat category, and whether the houseboat should be private;
  • for groups: the purpose (leisure, MICE, wedding, pilgrimage) and meal plan, including vegetarian or Jain needs;
  • your target per-person budget, so the quote is built to it rather than guessed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Kerala DMC?

A Kerala DMC (destination management company) is a local ground-handling partner that arranges hotels, houseboats, transfers, sightseeing and on-trip support in Kerala for travel agents and tour operators, at net rates, so the agent can sell the trip under their own brand.

Which airport is best for a Kerala tour?

Kochi (COK) is best for Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey. Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) suits Kovalam and Varkala, and Kozhikode (CCJ) or Kannur (CNN) suit Wayanad. For a week-long circuit, arriving at Kochi and leaving from Thiruvananthapuram avoids backtracking.

Do Kerala houseboats sail at night?

No. Houseboats are not allowed to cruise after dark. An overnight houseboat cruises from around midday until about sunset, moors for the night, and checks out around 9 am the next morning.

Is Eravikulam National Park open in February?

Usually not. Eravikulam normally closes from 1 February to 31 March for the Nilgiri tahr calving season, as it did in 2026. Plan other Munnar sights for February and March travel.

When is the best time to sell Kerala?

October to March is the main season, with the best weather from December to February. Christmas–New Year is the peak and books out first. April and May suit hill-station holidays, and the monsoon months suit Ayurveda and budget travellers.

How does the Sabarimala season affect tourist itineraries?

From mid-November to mid-January, pilgrim traffic is heavy on central Kerala roads, especially around Kumily, Erumeli and Pathanamthitta. Allow more time for Thekkady transfers and avoid the main pilgrim routes on peak days near 14 January.

When should agents book Kerala for New Year 2027?

Now, ideally by October or November. Premium houseboats, Munnar resorts and Fort Kochi hotels for 24 December to 1 January sell out first, often with minimum-stay rules.
