Kerala Tourist Places: 25 Best Places to Visit in Kerala (2026-27)

Kerala’s tourist places fall into five bands: the hill stations (Munnar, Wayanad, Thekkady, Vagamon), the backwaters (Alleppey, Kumarakom), the beaches (Kovalam, Varkala, Marari, Bekal), the wildlife reserves (Periyar, Eravikulam, Wayanad) and the cities (Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode).

Short answer: Kerala’s tourist places fall into five bands: the hill stations (Munnar, Wayanad, Thekkady, Vagamon), the backwaters (Alleppey, Kumarakom), the beaches (Kovalam, Varkala, Marari, Bekal), the wildlife reserves (Periyar, Eravikulam, Wayanad) and the cities (Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode). A first trip of 5–7 days usually covers Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey. October to March is the season; the monsoon from June to September is cheaper and green.

How is Kerala laid out, and why does it matter for your route?

Kerala is a long, thin state: about 580 km from Kasaragod in the north to Thiruvananthapuram in the south, and rarely more than 120 km wide. The coast, the midland and the Western Ghats run in three parallel strips. Almost every tourist place sits either on the coast (beaches, backwaters, Kochi) or up in the Ghats (Munnar, Thekkady, Wayanad), and the drive between the two takes three to five hours on winding roads.

That geography decides your trip. Travellers who try to see Wayanad in the north and Kovalam in the south in one week spend most of it in the car. In our experience, a first visit works better as a loop in the central belt (Kochi–Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey), a second visit as the south (Thiruvananthapuram–Kovalam–Varkala–Poovar), and a third as the north (Kozhikode–Wayanad–Bekal). Our 7-day Kerala itinerary shows the central loop day by day, and the 5-day Kerala plan trims it for a shorter holiday.

Getting there from north India is simple. Kochi (COK), Thiruvananthapuram (TRV), Kozhikode (CCJ) and Kannur (CNN) all have airports, and the Kerala Express, Rajdhani and several Sampark Kranti trains run from Delhi to Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram in roughly 40–48 hours. Within Kerala, KSRTC buses link every town on this list, though a car with driver saves hours on the hill roads.

Months are our recommendation from running trips, not a rule; Kerala is green and workable almost all year if you accept rain in the monsoon.

Which hill stations in Kerala should you visit?

Munnar is the one everybody starts with, about 130 km and four hours from Kochi airport. Tea estates cover the slopes from roughly 1,500 m upward, and the sights (Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty dam, Echo Point, Top Station, the Tea Museum) are strung along three roads out of town. Eravikulam, home of the Nilgiri tahr, closes for about 45–60 days in February–March for the calving season (munnar.com guide, checked 30 Oct 2026), so plan around that. Our Munnar tourist places guide lists 15 spots with timings, and the Kochi to Munnar page covers the drive and bus.

Thekkady, 110 km south of Munnar, is the Periyar Tiger Reserve and the spice town of Kumily. The boat on Periyar lake runs five slots a day from about 07:30 to 15:30 (trawell.in, checked 30 Oct 2026); tickets go fast in season, so book ahead or arrive early. See our Thekkady tourist places guide for the boat, spice gardens and Kathakali shows.

Wayanad in the north is a plateau of coffee, paddy and forest rather than a single town. Edakkal Caves (closed Mondays), Banasura Sagar dam, Soochipara falls, Kuruva island and the Muthanga part of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary are the main stops; the Chembra Peak trek reopened with a daily cap of 75 trekkers and a group permit (Onmanorama, Oct 2024), and the heart-shaped lake is as far as you go. Our Wayanad tourist places guide has a day-wise table.

Vagamon (about 100 km from Kochi) is smaller and quieter: rolling meadows, a pine forest and tandem paragliding from October to March, roughly ₹3,000–4,500 per flight (Kerala Tourism adventure page, checked 30 Oct 2026). Ponmudi near Thiruvananthapuram and Nelliyampathy in Palakkad are half-day hill drives for travellers who have already done Munnar.

What are the backwater places in Kerala, and which one should you choose?

The backwaters are a 900-km network of lagoons and canals behind the coast, and four places sell them. Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the houseboat base: an overnight cruise on Vembanad lake with lunch, dinner and breakfast, typically checking in around noon and out around 09:00 the next day. One-bedroom boats run about ₹7,000–12,000 a night in the deluxe band and more for premium (boatsnbeds.com rate guide, checked 30 Oct 2026; prices rise around Christmas and New Year). Our Alleppey houseboat guide explains what to look for, and Alleppey tourist places covers the beach, Marari and the Krishnapuram palace.

Kumarakom, across the lake from Alleppey, is for resort stays and the bird sanctuary (best November to February for migrants). Kollam and Ashtamudi lake have the eight-hour public ferry to Alleppey, the cheapest way to see the water. Poovar, south of Kovalam, is a short estuary where the backwater meets the sea. The Kerala backwaters guide compares all four.

Which Kerala beaches are worth the drive?

  • Varkala: the only cliff beach in Kerala, 50 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, with cafes on the cliff edge and the Papanasam beach below the 2,000-year-old Janardanaswamy temple (Outlook Traveller guide). Our Varkala tourist places guide has the full list.
  • Kovalam: three crescent beaches (Lighthouse, Hawah, Samudra) 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram; the most developed, with lifeguards and a wide hotel range.
  • Marari: a quiet fishing beach 12 km north of Alleppey; pair it with the houseboat night.
  • Cherai: 25 km from Kochi on Vypin island, backwater on one side and sea on the other.
  • Bekal: a 17th-century laterite fort on the sea in Kasaragod; the beach below is sandy and empty on weekdays.
  • Muzhappilangad: a 4-km drive-in beach near Kannur, open to cars at low tide.

Sea swimming in Kerala has strong currents from May to September; stick to lifeguarded stretches at Kovalam and Varkala and follow the flags.

Where can you see wildlife in Kerala?

Periyar Tiger Reserve at Thekkady is the easiest: the lake boat shows elephants, gaur and sambar at the water’s edge in the dry months (January–April), and guided nature walks, bamboo rafting and the Gavi eco-tourism day trip go deeper. Tiger sightings are rare; do not go for tigers. Eravikulam near Munnar is the place for Nilgiri tahr, reached by a forest department bus from the Rajamala gate, 07:30–16:00, about ₹200 for Indian adults (munnar.com, checked 30 Oct 2026; confirm at the gate).

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Muthanga and Tholpetty ranges) runs morning and afternoon jeep safaris with elephant and deer sightings common. Chinnar, 60 km from Munnar towards Tamil Nadu, is dry scrub with grizzled giant squirrels and guided treks. Parambikulam in Palakkad is quieter and needs an overnight in forest accommodation. For a serious tiger trip, our tiger safari guide points you to central India instead.

What should you see in Kerala’s cities?

Kochi is the state’s gateway and the one city worth a full day: the Chinese fishing nets and St Francis Church in Fort Kochi, Mattancherry Palace (closed Fridays, Kerala Tourism-listed timings 10:00–17:00) and the Jewish synagogue, a Kathakali performance in the evening, and the Water Metro boats for ₹20–40 a ride (Wikipedia, checked 30 Oct 2026). Our Kochi tourist places guide includes a one-day plan.

Thiruvananthapuram has the Padmanabhaswamy temple (Hindus only, strict dress code: dhoti for men, saree or dhoti wrap for women), the Napier Museum and zoo, and Shanghumukham beach. Our Trivandrum tourist places guide covers it. Kozhikode is a food stop (Malabar biryani, halwa on SM Street) and the base for Wayanad. Thrissur is the cultural capital, with the Vadakkunnathan temple and the Thrissur Pooram festival in April–May, and Guruvayur, 30 km away, is Kerala’s busiest Krishna temple; we run a Guruvayur temple tour for pilgrims.

How many days do you need, and what does a Kerala trip cost?

Five days covers Kochi, Munnar and Alleppey. Six or seven days adds Thekkady and a beach. Ten days lets you add either Wayanad or the Thiruvananthapuram coast. Our Kerala trip cost guide breaks down hotels, cab per day and entry fees for 2, 4 and 6 days. For a couple, our Kerala Honeymoon Special 6D/5N is ₹22,500 per person on a Deluxe basis in the off-season band (1 Nov–19 Dec and 6 Jan–14 Mar); peak dates (20 Dec–5 Jan and 15 Mar onward) run about 25% more. The Kerala Highlights and Kerala Royal packages are priced on request for your dates.

Booking terms are simple: a 20% token confirms the package, with a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of paying, and the balance is due before the trip. For the month-by-month picture, read best time to visit Kerala and Kerala in December, the busiest month.

Frequently asked questions

Which are the top 5 tourist places in Kerala?

For a first visit we recommend Munnar (tea hills), Thekkady (Periyar lake and spices), Alleppey (houseboat on the backwaters), Fort Kochi (heritage and Kathakali) and a beach, either Kovalam or Varkala. These five sit in the central and southern belt, so they fit into one 6–7 day loop without long drives.

What is the best month to visit Kerala?

October to March is the main season, with dry days and temperatures of 23–32°C on the coast and 10–22°C in Munnar. December is the busiest and most expensive. April and May are hot on the coast but pleasant in the hills. June to September is monsoon, green and cheap, good for Ayurveda stays but not for houseboats or beaches.

How many days are enough for Kerala?

Five days covers Kochi, Munnar and an Alleppey houseboat. Six or seven days adds Thekkady and a beach night, which is the most common plan. Ten days lets you add Wayanad in the north or Thiruvananthapuram and Varkala in the south. Trying to see both ends of the state in a week means too many hours in the car.

Which is better, Munnar or Wayanad?

Munnar is tea estates at higher altitude, cooler, with more famous viewpoints and more crowds; it pairs naturally with Thekkady and Alleppey. Wayanad is a forested plateau with caves, waterfalls, wildlife safaris and homestays, better for a slower trip and reachable from Bengaluru or Kozhikode. First-time visitors usually pick Munnar.

How much does a Kerala trip cost per person?

Our Kerala Honeymoon Special, 6 days and 5 nights with Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Kovalam on a Deluxe basis, is ₹22,500 per person in the off-season band. Independent travellers should budget roughly ₹3,000–6,000 per person per day for mid-range hotels, a car and meals, plus the houseboat night, which is priced per boat rather than per person.

How do I reach Kerala from Delhi?

Fly to Kochi (COK), about 3 hours 15 minutes nonstop, or to Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode. By train, the Kerala Express and the Thiruvananthapuram Rajdhani run from New Delhi to Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram in roughly 40–48 hours; book on IRCTC well ahead for December. Within Kerala, a car with driver or KSRTC buses connect the towns.
