Short answer: A 2-day Munnar trip plan from Kochi works like this: leave Kochi by 07:00 on day 1, drive 130 km up with stops at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, and do the town-side sights – Tea Museum, Attukal, Pothamedu, Blossom Park – after lunch. On day 2 be at Eravikulam National Park for the 07:30 opening, then drive the Mattupetty – Echo Point – Kundala – Top Station road, and head back to Kochi by 15:00. Budget about ₹6,000–₹9,000 per person for a couple at 3-star level, including the car.
Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)
- Day 1: Kochi → Munnar (130 km, 3.5–4 h) with waterfalls; afternoon Tea Museum (09:00–16:00, closed Mondays, ₹75 adult – Holidify listing), Attukal falls, Pothamedu sunset.
- Day 2: Eravikulam National Park at opening (07:30–16:00, about ₹200 Indian adult, shuttle from the gate – munnar.com guide), then Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, Kundala Lake, Top Station (32 km); return to Kochi.
- Stay: one night; town or Pallivasal for convenience, Chinnakanal or Suryanelli for views (adds 20–25 km each way).
- Cost for two: roughly ₹12,000–₹18,000 at 3-star level with a sedan for two days; about ₹5,000–₹7,000 by bus and homestay.
- Eravikulam closure: about 45–60 days in February–March for tahr calving; swap in Marayoor or Kolukkumalai then.
- Best months: October–March; weekends and 20 Dec–5 Jan are crowded on the Top Station road.

Can you see Munnar properly in 2 days?
Yes, if you treat it as two half-days of sightseeing wrapped around one night, and accept that two of the far-flung places – Kolukkumalai (the jeep trip to the highest tea estate) and Marayoor–Kanthalloor (sandalwood forest and orchards, 40 km north) – need a third day. Munnar’s sights sit on three spokes out of town, and the trick of a two-day plan is to do the town spoke on arrival afternoon, the Eravikulam spoke first thing on day 2, and the Mattupetty–Top Station spoke before leaving.
In our experience the plan fails when people arrive at 14:00 and try to drive to Top Station the same afternoon: the 32-km single-lane road jams at weekends and the valley fogs over after 15:00 from October to February. It also fails when Eravikulam is left to mid-morning on a Saturday, when the queue for the forest shuttle can take two hours. Early starts are the whole plan.
This guide assumes a car with driver from Kochi, which is how most couples and families do it. The bus version is in our budget Kerala trip plan, and the transfer itself is covered in detail in Kochi to Munnar. For the full list of sights with timings, see Munnar tourist places.
Day 1: Kochi to Munnar and the town-side sights
| Time | Stop | Notes (checked 30 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 07:00 | Leave Kochi (Ernakulam or Fort Kochi) | NH85 via Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam; breakfast stop at Kothamangalam |
| 09:30 | Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls | Roadside, 20 minutes each; strong July–December, thin by April |
| 10:30 | Adimali | Spice shops; cheapest cardamom and pepper on the route |
| 11:30 | Attukal waterfalls viewpoint and Pothamedu | Both just before town on the Pallivasal stretch; first tea-valley photographs |
| 12:30 | Check in, lunch | Most resorts allow early check-in on request; Munnar town has Kerala meals for ₹150–₹250 |
| 14:30 | KDHP Tea Museum, Nalluthanni Estate | 09:00–16:00, closed Mondays and Good Friday, ₹75 adult / ₹35 child, ₹20 camera (Holidify listing); last entry about 15:30, tea-processing demo |
| 16:00 | Blossom Hydel Park or Hydel Park boating | Riverside gardens 3 km from town; small ticket; good with children |
| 17:30 | Pothamedu or Chithirapuram sunset | Back the way you came, 5–7 km; the classic rolling-tea photograph in evening light |
| 19:00 | Munnar town market and dinner | Homemade chocolate, tea shops; the town closes early, by about 21:00 |
If day 1 is a Monday, the Tea Museum is shut; replace it with the Lockhart Gap viewpoint and tea-estate walk on the Devikulam side, about 12 km south, or the Carmelagiri elephant park. If you arrive on a KSRTC bus (about 4 hours from Ernakulam, from about ₹188 – ixigo listing), hire an auto for the afternoon loop; drivers at the stand quote a fixed rate for the Tea Museum–Pothamedu circuit.
Day 2: Eravikulam, Mattupetty and Top Station
| Time | Stop | Notes (checked 30 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 07:00 | Leave hotel for Rajamala | 13 km north-west of town on the Marayoor road; carry breakfast or eat at the resort first |
| 07:30–10:00 | Eravikulam National Park | Opens 07:30, closes 16:00; Indian adult about ₹200, child about ₹150, camera ₹50 (munnar.com guide); forest shuttle from the gate to the Nilgiri tahr zone, about 1 km of walking at the top; book online a day ahead |
| 10:30 | Back through town, check out | Hotels usually allow a late check-out until 11:00–12:00 on request |
| 11:15 | Mattupetty Dam (13 km) | Speedboat and pedal-boat rides on the reservoir, ticketed by the DTPC counter; 30–40 minutes |
| 12:00 | Echo Point (15 km) | Lakeside stop with stalls; 15 minutes is enough |
| 12:30 | Kundala Lake (20 km) | Pedal and shikara boats; the quietest of the three lakes |
| 13:15 | Top Station (32 km) | Viewpoint over the Theni valley in Tamil Nadu, small entry ticket; clearest before noon, so on a weekend reverse the order and come here first after Eravikulam |
| 14:30 | Lunch in town, depart | Kochi by about 19:00; Cochin airport by about 18:30 for a flight after 20:30 |
Eravikulam closes for about 45–60 days in February–March for the Nilgiri tahr calving season (munnar.com guide; the park has reopened around late March or 1 April in recent years). In those weeks, use the morning for Marayoor’s sandalwood forest and Kanthalloor orchards (40 km, about 1.5 hours each way) and shorten the lake spoke to Mattupetty and Echo Point. If you have a third day, the 04:30 jeep to Kolukkumalai for sunrise over the Tamil Nadu plains is the best thing in Munnar.
Where should you stay for a 2-day Munnar trip?
For a single night, location beats luxury. Munnar town and Pallivasal (0–8 km) put you 15 minutes from both spokes and let you reach Eravikulam at opening without a 45-minute drive first. Chinnakanal and Suryanelli (20–25 km beyond town towards Top Station) have the most photographed valley views and the larger resorts, but they add about 50 km to the day and put Eravikulam an hour away. Devikulam and Lockhart Gap (10–12 km south on the Thekkady road) are quiet, close to town and handy if you continue to Thekkady.
Homestays and small guesthouses in Pallivasal and Anachal run about ₹1,500–₹2,800 for a double, 3-star resorts about ₹4,000–₹6,500, and the tea-estate resorts with balconies ₹9,000–₹20,000 in the November–March season – our planning ranges, not fixed rates. Weekends, 20 December–5 January and the April–May school holidays push the upper bands higher, so book Munnar earlier than any other Kerala stop.
How much does a 2-day Munnar trip cost?
- Car with driver, 2 days from Kochi: roughly ₹6,000–₹8,000 for a sedan and ₹9,000–₹11,000 for an Innova in our quotes, including fuel, tolls, parking and the driver’s night halt; about 320 km in total.
- Hotel, 1 night: about ₹2,000 (homestay) to ₹6,500 (3-star) to ₹12,000-plus (tea-estate resort) for a double.
- Entry fees per person: Eravikulam about ₹200, Tea Museum ₹75, Top Station and Blossom Park small tickets, Mattupetty speedboat shared between passengers – allow about ₹600–₹900 per person including a boat ride.
- Meals: about ₹800–₹1,200 per person for the two days outside the hotel.
- Total for a couple: roughly ₹12,000–₹18,000 at 3-star level with a sedan, about ₹5,000–₹7,000 by KSRTC bus and homestay with an auto for sightseeing, and ₹25,000–₹32,000 with an Innova and a tea-estate resort.
These are the ranges we see when quoting November–March trips; for how Munnar fits into a longer budget, see the Kerala trip cost guide. Munnar two days also slots straight into our Kerala trip plan for 5 days as days 2 and 3, and the Kerala Honeymoon Special (6D/5N, ₹22,500 per person in the off-season band, private sedan, 4-star hotels, houseboat) gives Munnar exactly these two nights before Thekkady and Alleppey.
What should you skip, and what are the common mistakes?
Skip the roadside ‘spice gardens’ between Adimali and town unless you want a shopping stop, and skip the second lake if the Top Station road is jammed – Mattupetty and Kundala look much the same. Do not plan Top Station after 15:00 in winter; the valley fills with cloud. Do not drive the ghat section after dark; the fog and lorries make it slow and unpleasant, and elephants cross near Neriamangalam. Carry a jacket even in April – Munnar mornings are 10–15°C – and cash for the forest department counter and boat jetties, where UPI sometimes fails on the hill network.
If two days feel short, the natural extensions are south to Thekkady (110 km, 3.5 hours) for the Periyar boat ride, or down to Alleppey for a houseboat night via the route in our Alleppey to Munnar guide. Quieter alternatives to Munnar itself, if the crowds put you off, are Vagamon and the Kolukkumalai–Suryanelli side. International visitors can read our Munnar travel guide, and for timing your trip see best time to visit Kerala.
Frequently asked questions
Is 2 days enough for Munnar?
Yes for the main sights. Day 1 covers the drive up with the waterfalls and the town-side stops – Tea Museum, Attukal, Pothamedu, Blossom Park – and day 2 covers Eravikulam National Park at opening and the Mattupetty–Echo Point–Kundala–Top Station road before leaving. Kolukkumalai sunrise and Marayoor–Kanthalloor need a third day.
What is the cost of a 2-day Munnar trip from Kochi?
Roughly ₹12,000–₹18,000 for a couple at 3-star level with a sedan and driver for two days, including the hotel night, entry fees and meals. By KSRTC bus and homestay with an auto for sightseeing it is about ₹5,000–₹7,000 for two; with an Innova and a tea-estate resort about ₹25,000–₹32,000. These are our planning ranges for November–March.
What time should I reach Eravikulam National Park?
Be at the Rajamala gate at 07:30 when it opens, especially on weekends and holidays, when the queue for the forest shuttle can take two hours by mid-morning. Indian adults pay about ₹200 and children about ₹150 with a separate camera fee, and the park closes at 16:00. It shuts for about 45–60 days in February–March for the tahr calving season.
Where should I stay in Munnar for one night?
Munnar town or Pallivasal, within 8 km of the centre, so that both sightseeing spokes are 15 minutes away and you can reach Eravikulam at opening. Chinnakanal and Suryanelli resorts have the best valley views but sit 20–25 km towards Top Station and add about 50 km of driving to a two-day plan. Devikulam is a quiet middle option.
Is the Tea Museum in Munnar open on Monday?
No. The KDHP Tea Museum at Nalluthanni Estate is closed on Mondays and Good Friday, and open 09:00–16:00 on other days with tickets of ₹75 for adults, ₹35 for children aged 6–12 and ₹20 for a camera (Holidify listing, checked 30 October 2026). If your first day is a Monday, visit Lockhart Gap and a tea-estate walk on the Devikulam side instead.
How far is Top Station from Munnar?
About 32 km north-east of Munnar town along the Mattupetty road, past Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and Kundala Lake; the drive takes about an hour each way on a single-lane road that jams on weekends. The viewpoint looks down into the Theni valley in Tamil Nadu and is clearest before noon, with cloud filling the valley after 15:00 in winter.
