Short answer: The classic Kerala trip plan for 5 days is Kochi (1 night) – Munnar (2 nights) – Alleppey houseboat (1 night) – back to Kochi. Fly or train into Kochi, drive about 130 km up to Munnar on day 2, see the tea country on day 3, come down roughly 160 km to Alleppey for a houseboat on day 4, and return 55 km to Kochi on day 5. Budget about ₹12,000–₹18,000 per person for a standard trip, more for resorts.

Is 5 days enough for Kerala?
Five days is enough for one hill station and one backwater night, which is what most first-time visitors from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or Hyderabad actually want. It is not enough to add Thekkady, Wayanad or Kovalam without turning the trip into a drive-athon. In our experience the mistake people make is trying to fit four destinations into four nights; Kerala roads are two-lane and hilly, and 150 km here takes as long as 300 km on an expressway.
This plan therefore keeps to the triangle Kochi – Munnar – Alleppey. If you have two more days, our 7-day Kerala itinerary adds Thekkady and Kovalam. If money is the main constraint, our budget Kerala trip plan does the same loop on buses and homestays. This guide is the mid-range version: a private car, 3-star hotels and a private houseboat.

Day 1: how do you spend an arrival day in Kochi?
Most flights from north India land at Cochin International Airport (COK) in Nedumbassery, about 40 km and 1–1.5 hours from Fort Kochi. If you are arriving by train, Ernakulam Junction (ERS) and Ernakulam Town (ERN) are both about 12 km from Fort Kochi; the daily 12626 Kerala Express from New Delhi reaches Ernakulam Town at 16:30 on day three (ConfirmTkt, checked 30 Oct 2026). From Bengaluru and Chennai there are overnight trains that arrive by mid-morning.
Stay in Fort Kochi rather than Ernakulam. It is a walking neighbourhood: the Chinese fishing nets at the northern tip, St Francis Church where Vasco da Gama was first buried, Santa Cruz Basilica, then an auto-rickshaw to Mattancherry for the Dutch Palace murals (closed Fridays, small ticket) and the Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town (closed Fridays and Saturdays). Finish with a 90-minute Kathakali performance at the Kerala Kathakali Centre or Greenix – arrive an hour early to watch the make-up. Our Kochi tourist places guide has the full list including the Water Metro and Hill Palace.
Day 2: what is the Kochi to Munnar drive like?
Leave by 08:00. The road is NH85 through Kolenchery, Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam and Neriamangalam, where the climb begins. After Adimali, the highway follows the Periyar’s tributaries past Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, both right beside the road and at their fullest from July to December. Adimali’s roadside shops are the cheapest place for cardamom, pepper and homemade chocolate. The final 30 km from Pallivasal is where the tea begins, and the 130 km takes about 3.5–4 hours with stops (Savaari gives 3 h 50 min for the NH85 route). Our detailed Kochi to Munnar guide covers the bus and taxi options too.
Check in by early afternoon and keep the rest of the day light: Pothamedu viewpoint at sunset, a walk through the tea near your resort, and a visit to the Blossom Hydel Park or Munnar town market. Hotels in Chinnakanal and Suryanelli are 20–25 km beyond town; they have the views but add 45 minutes to every sightseeing run, so decide which matters more.
Day 3: which Munnar places fit into one day?
Munnar’s sights lie on two spokes from town, so do one in the morning and one after lunch. The north-west spoke, 13 km out, is Eravikulam National Park at Rajamala, home of the Nilgiri tahr. It opens 07:30–16:00, Indian adults pay about ₹200 with a separate camera fee, and visitors ride a forest department shuttle from the gate to the tahr zone (munnar.com guide, checked 30 Oct 2026). The park closes for about 45–60 days in February–March for the calving season, so if your trip is then, go to Marayoor and Kanthalloor instead. Book tickets online a day ahead in season; weekend queues are long. The KDHP Tea Museum at Nalluthanni Estate is on the way back: 09:00–16:00, closed Mondays, ₹75 adult (Holidify listing).
The north-east spoke runs past Mattupetty Dam (speedboat rides), Echo Point, Kundala Lake (pedal boats) and ends at Top Station, about 32 km from town on the Tamil Nadu border, with the valley view that appears in every Munnar photograph. Weekends see jams on this single-lane road; leave town by 14:00. Our Munnar tourist places guide has timings for all 15 stops, and if you have only two days up here, see our Munnar trip plan for 2 days.
Day 4: Munnar to Alleppey and the houseboat night
The drive down is about 160 km and takes 4.5–5 hours by the usual route through Adimali, Thodupuzha, Muvattupuzha and Kottayam; a slightly longer but prettier alternative runs via Kuttikkanam and Pala. Start by 07:00 so you reach Alleppey for the standard houseboat check-in at about 12:00. Our Alleppey to Munnar guide describes both roads and the bus.
A private one-bedroom houseboat with air-conditioning (usually run 21:00–06:00 only), a cook and two crew, lunch, evening snacks, dinner and breakfast costs about ₹7,000–₹12,000 a night in the deluxe band and ₹12,000–₹20,000 for premium boats, with peak-season (December–January) and weekend rates at the top of each range (Boats n Beds rate guide, checked 30 Oct 2026). Boats cruise from noon until about 17:30, moor for the night by the rules, and cruise again briefly after breakfast. Ask for a route through the Punnamada and Kainakary canals rather than only the open Vembanad lake. Read our Alleppey houseboat guide before booking; the Kerala backwaters guide explains the alternatives such as the Kumarakom day cruise and the village canoe.
Day 5: back to Kochi and departure
Houseboats return to the Punnamada finishing point around 09:00. From Alleppey, Ernakulam is about 55 km and 1.5 hours on NH66; Cochin airport is about 85 km and 2.5 hours, so a flight after 14:00 is comfortable. If your train leaves in the evening, spend the morning at Alappuzha Beach and the 1862 pier, or take the Krishnapuram Palace detour 45 km south. Our Alleppey tourist places guide has more.

| Houseboat, 1 night with meals | about ₹7,000–₹9,000 (deluxe band) | about ₹9,000–₹12,000 | about ₹12,000–₹20,000 (premium) |

These are the ranges we see when quoting in the November–March season; hotel and cab figures are estimates, not fixed rates, and Christmas–New Year week runs 25–40% higher. For a line-by-line breakdown for 2, 4 and 6 days see our Kerala trip cost guide. The one fixed price we can quote is our Kerala Honeymoon Special: 6 days / 5 nights covering Kochi, Munnar (2 nights), Thekkady and a private houseboat, with a private AC sedan, 4-star hotels and the houseboat meals, at ₹22,500 per person in the off-season band (1 Nov–19 Dec and 6 Jan–14 Mar), about 25% more at peak. A 20% token confirms the booking and is fully refundable within 48 hours.
When should you do this 5-day Kerala plan?
October to March is the comfortable window: Munnar mornings at 10–15°C, Alleppey days around 30°C, and the waterfalls still running until December. December 20 to January 5 is the busiest and dearest fortnight; book houseboats and Munnar resorts six to eight weeks ahead. April and May are hot in Kochi and Alleppey but pleasant in Munnar, and tea-country resorts fill with families on school holidays. June to September is monsoon: lush, cheap and quiet, but Eravikulam’s tahr may be hidden in mist and the Top Station road can be fogged. Our best time to visit Kerala guide covers each month.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best 5-day Kerala route for a first trip?
Kochi – Munnar – Alleppey – Kochi is the route we recommend for a first visit of five days. It covers one hill station, one backwater night and a heritage town with about 350 km of total driving, and it starts and ends at Cochin airport and Ernakulam railway station. Adding Thekkady or Kovalam needs a sixth or seventh day.
How much does a 5-day Kerala trip cost per person?
Roughly ₹12,000–₹18,000 per person for a standard trip with 3-star hotels, a private sedan and a deluxe houseboat, excluding flights, based on the ranges we quote in the November–March season. Budget travellers using buses and homestays can manage in about ₹8,000–₹11,000, and 4-star resorts push it to ₹32,000–₹47,000 per person.
Should I stay in Alleppey hotel or houseboat?
Take the houseboat for one night; it is the point of Alleppey. Check-in is about 12:00 and check-out about 09:00, with lunch, dinner and breakfast included, and boats moor for the night by about 17:30. Deluxe one-bedroom boats run about ₹7,000–₹12,000 in season. Two houseboat nights are too many for most people; a second night is better spent in Munnar or at a Kumarakom resort.
Can I do this Kerala plan by bus instead of a car?
Yes. KSRTC runs Ernakulam to Munnar in about 4 hours from around ₹188 and Alappuzha to Munnar in about 3 h 45 min a few times a day (ixigo and Rome2Rio listings, checked 30 October 2026). Munnar sightseeing then needs a local jeep or auto for the day. Our budget Kerala trip plan covers this version in detail.
Is Eravikulam National Park open in February?
Usually not for the full month. The park closes for about 45–60 days during the Nilgiri tahr calving season, which falls in February and March, and reopens around late March or 1 April depending on the year. If your Munnar day falls in that window, substitute Marayoor sandalwood forest and Kanthalloor orchards, or the Kolukkumalai jeep trip.
How far is Munnar from Kochi and Alleppey?
Kochi to Munnar is about 130 km and takes 3.5–4 hours on NH85 via Kothamangalam and Adimali. Munnar to Alleppey is about 160 km and takes 4.5–5 hours via Thodupuzha and Kottayam. Alleppey back to Ernakulam is about 55 km and 1.5 hours, and to Cochin airport about 85 km and 2.5 hours.
