Short answer: Alleppey to Munnar is about 160 km by road and takes 4.5 to 5 hours by car, longer than the map suggests because the first half is through busy Kottayam-district towns and the second half is a ghat climb. The usual route is Alappuzha – Changanassery – Kottayam – Pala – Thodupuzha – Adimali – Munnar. KSRTC runs a few direct buses a day taking about 5 hours; otherwise change at Kottayam or Ernakulam.

Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)

  • Distance: about 160 km (Rome2Rio shows roughly 150–175 km depending on route); about 1,500 m of climb after Thodupuzha.
  • Time by car: 4.5–5 hours with one stop; leave by 07:30 after a houseboat breakfast to reach Munnar by lunch.
  • Main route: Alappuzha → Changanassery → Kottayam → Pala → Thodupuzha → Adimali → Munnar (joins the Kochi road at Adimali).
  • Scenic route: Kottayam → Kanjirappally → Kuttikkanam → Kumily road junction → Munnar via Nedumkandam and Devikulam; 1–1.5 h longer.
  • Bus: KSRTC direct services about 4 times a day, roughly 4–5 hours (Rome2Rio listing); frequent buses to Kottayam and Ernakulam with a change.
  • Taxi: roughly ₹3,800–₹5,500 one way for a sedan in our quotes; cheaper as day 4 of a multi-day hire.
  • Stops: Thommankuthu waterfalls near Thodupuzha, Adimali spice shops, Pothamedu viewpoint.

How far is Munnar from Alleppey, and why does it take so long?

On the map Alappuzha and Munnar are only about 110 km apart in a straight line, and route planners show a road distance of roughly 150–175 km depending on which way you go (Rome2Rio, checked 30 Oct 2026). We quote about 160 km and 4.5–5 hours by car, and in our experience that is honest: there is no highway on this route. The first 40 km to Kottayam crosses the Kuttanad rice fields on narrow embankment roads, the stretch from Kottayam to Thodupuzha runs through a string of market towns, and from Thodupuzha the road climbs steadily to Adimali and then up the ghat into the tea.

The other reason it feels long is the start. Houseboats return to the Punnamada finishing point at about 09:00, and by the time bags are loaded you are leaving Alleppey at 09:30 and arriving in Munnar at 14:00–14:30. If your houseboat operator allows an early breakfast and 08:00 disembarkation, ask for it; the hour saved means you reach Munnar in time for Pothamedu at golden hour. Our Alleppey houseboat guide explains check-in and check-out timings.

Most travellers do this leg in the other direction, Munnar down to Alleppey, which is the sequence in our Kerala trip plan for 5 days. Everything in this guide applies in reverse, except that the downhill drive is about 30 minutes faster.

Alleppey to Munnar: route options compared

Route Via Distance / time Why choose it
Standard (Thodupuzha) Changanassery, Kottayam, Pala, Thodupuzha, Adimali about 160 km, 4.5–5 h Fastest, best road surface, Thommankuthu falls detour, lunch at Adimali
Via Muvattupuzha Kottayam, Ettumanoor, Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam, Adimali about 170 km, 5 h Joins the Kochi–Munnar NH85 at Kothamangalam, so you pass Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls
Scenic high route Kottayam, Kanjirappally, Kuttikkanam, Nedumkandam, Devikulam about 190 km, 6–6.5 h Tea and cardamom country from Kuttikkanam onwards, far less traffic; only in daylight
Via Thekkady (two days) Kottayam, Kumily (overnight), Munnar about 145 km + 110 km Adds Periyar boat ride and spice plantations; the sequence used in our 6-day honeymoon package

Distances are rounded road figures from route planners and our own trip sheets; Kerala’s district roads are measured in time rather than kilometres, so treat the hours as the useful number.

What is the standard Alleppey to Munnar drive like?

  • Alappuzha to Changanassery (about 25 km): the AC Road across Kuttanad, below sea level, with paddy on both sides and canals beside the road. Slow but photogenic; 45 minutes.
  • Changanassery to Kottayam (about 20 km): ordinary town traffic. Kottayam is where the Ettumanoor and Pala roads split; stay on the Pala road.
  • Kottayam to Pala to Thodupuzha (about 55 km): rubber plantations and churches, the heart of central Travancore. Pala has decent bakeries for a halt. Thodupuzha is the last big town before the hills and the turn-off for Thommankuthu waterfalls, a 12-step cascade about 18 km east that makes a 1-hour detour from July to January.
  • Thodupuzha to Adimali (about 40 km): the climb begins past Karimannoor and Kaliyar; Adimali is where this road meets NH85 from Kochi and where our drivers stop for a Kerala meal and cardamom shopping.
  • Adimali to Munnar (about 30 km): the same ghat climb described in our Kochi to Munnar guide: Pallivasal, Attukal waterfalls, Pothamedu viewpoint, then town. Mist after 15:00 from October to February.

Fuel up in Kottayam or Thodupuzha; Munnar’s petrol pumps are few and busy on weekends. Mobile data is patchy from Thodupuzha onwards, so download offline maps for the resort.

Can you go from Alleppey to Munnar by bus?

Yes, but with care. KSRTC runs a handful of direct Alappuzha–Munnar services each day, about four according to the Rome2Rio listing checked on 30 October 2026, with a journey time of roughly 4–5 hours and fares of a few hundred rupees. Departures are concentrated in the early morning and the timetable changes seasonally, so confirm the night before at the Alappuzha KSRTC stand (next to the boat jetty) or on the KSRTC online booking site. If a direct bus does not fit, take any of the frequent buses to Kottayam (1 hour) and change to a Kottayam–Munnar service, or go to Ernakulam (1.5 hours) and pick up the more frequent Ernakulam–Munnar buses described in our Kochi to Munnar guide.

Houseboat check-out at 09:00 does not match the early buses well; budget travellers usually take a day cruise instead of an overnight boat, stay the night in an Alleppey homestay, and catch the first morning bus. Our budget Kerala trip plan is built around this.

Is a taxi from Alleppey to Munnar worth the money?

A one-way sedan is roughly ₹3,800–₹5,500 in the quotes we see, and an Innova ₹5,500–₹7,500, including fuel, tolls and parking; the one-way premium is because the driver returns empty. On a multi-day hire – the car that brought you from Kochi to Alleppey and continues to Munnar and back – this leg is simply day 3 or 4 at roughly ₹2,800–₹3,800 for a sedan, which is why almost all our Kerala itineraries are built around one car for the whole trip.

The car earns its keep on this route in particular: the bus route follows the main road, but a car can take the Thommankuthu detour, stop at a Pala bakery or a Kuttanad toddy shop for lunch, and deliver you to a Chinnakanal or Suryanelli resort 20 km beyond Munnar town without a second taxi. Ask the driver to confirm the route the evening before; some prefer Muvattupuzha for the better road surface, which is fine if you have not already seen Cheeyappara and Valara on the way up from Kochi.

How does this leg fit into a Kerala itinerary?

Alleppey–Munnar is the connecting leg between the backwaters and the hills, and the question is only which order to do them in. Munnar first, Alleppey last is the usual choice: you end on the relaxing houseboat and are 55 km from Ernakulam for the flight home. Alleppey first suits travellers arriving on a late flight into Kochi who want the houseboat before the long drives, or those continuing from Munnar to Kodaikanal or Coimbatore across the Tamil Nadu border.

With Thekkady in between – Alleppey → Kumily (about 145 km, 4 hours) → Munnar (about 110 km, 3.5 hours) – you break the journey, add the Periyar boat ride and spice plantations, and see the high route through cardamom country. This is the structure of our Kerala Honeymoon Special, 6 days / 5 nights at ₹22,500 per person in the off-season band (1 Nov–19 Dec and 6 Jan–14 Mar) with a private AC sedan, 4-star hotels and a private houseboat, run in the Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey direction. The 7-day Kerala itinerary extends it to Kovalam. For what to see at each end, start with our guides to Alleppey tourist places and Munnar tourist places, and the Thekkady tourist places guide if you take the middle route. Costs for each version are in our Kerala trip cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the distance from Alleppey to Munnar?

About 160 km by the standard road through Changanassery, Kottayam, Pala, Thodupuzha and Adimali; route planners show roughly 150–175 km depending on the roads chosen. The drive takes 4.5–5 hours by car because the first half runs through busy towns and Kuttanad embankment roads and the second half climbs about 1,500 m into the tea estates.

Is there a direct bus from Alleppey to Munnar?

KSRTC runs a few direct Alappuzha–Munnar buses a day, about four on the Rome2Rio listing checked 30 October 2026, taking roughly 4–5 hours, mostly in the early morning. If the timings do not suit, take a frequent bus to Kottayam or Ernakulam and change to a Munnar service there. Confirm at the Alappuzha KSRTC stand the evening before.

How much does a taxi from Alleppey to Munnar cost?

Roughly ₹3,800–₹5,500 one way for a sedan and ₹5,500–₹7,500 for an Innova in the quotes we see, including fuel, tolls and parking. As part of a multi-day hire where the same car stays with you from Kochi, the day costs roughly ₹2,800–₹3,800 for a sedan, so a continuous hire is almost always better value.

Which is the best route from Alleppey to Munnar?

The Thodupuzha route via Kottayam and Pala is the quickest and has the best surface, with the Thommankuthu waterfalls detour and lunch at Adimali. Go via Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam if you want to see Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, and take the Kuttikkanam high route only with a full day to spare and in daylight.

Should I visit Munnar or Alleppey first?

Munnar first and Alleppey last is the usual order: the long drives come early, you finish with the relaxing houseboat night, and Alleppey is only 55 km from Ernakulam for the journey home. Do Alleppey first if you arrive late into Kochi or plan to leave Munnar for Kodaikanal, Coimbatore or Madurai across the Tamil Nadu border.

Can I stop at Thekkady between Alleppey and Munnar?

Yes, and it is the best way to break the journey. Alleppey to Kumily is about 145 km and 4 hours, and Kumily to Munnar about 110 km and 3.5 hours through cardamom country. An overnight in Thekkady adds the Periyar Lake boat ride and spice plantations; this is the sequence of our 6-day Kerala Honeymoon Special, run in the reverse direction.
