How far is Munnar from Kochi, and how long does it really take?
Munnar sits at about 1,500 m in the Idukki district, roughly 130 km east of Ernakulam by the NH85 route (Savaari route guide, checked 30 Oct 2026). The first 60 km to Kothamangalam is flat and busy; the next 30 km to Adimali follows the Periyar’s tributaries into the forest; the final 40 km is the climb through tea, with hairpins, lorries and mist in the mornings from October onwards.
In our experience, a car leaving Fort Kochi at 08:00 reaches a Munnar town hotel between 12:00 and 12:30 with 20-minute stops at both waterfalls. Leaving at 10:00 adds an hour, because Kolenchery and Muvattupuzha traffic builds by mid-morning. Night driving on the ghat section is legal but not pleasant – elephants cross near Neriamangalam and the fog can be thick – so we schedule all Munnar transfers in daylight.
From Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, the road is about 110 km via Perumbavoor and Kothamangalam, joining NH85 there; count 3–3.5 hours. Travellers connecting straight from a morning flight can be in Munnar for a late lunch.
Kochi to Munnar: which option suits you?
| Option | Time | Approximate cost | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private taxi, sedan | 3.5–4.5 h with stops | roughly ₹3,000–₹4,500 one way; ₹2,800–₹3,800 a day on a multi-day hire | Couples, families, anyone with luggage | Confirm whether tolls, parking and the driver’s night halt are included |
| Private taxi, Innova | 3.5–4.5 h | roughly ₹4,500–₹6,000 one way | Groups of 4–6, elderly parents | Same as above |
| App cab (Uber Intercity) | about 4–5 h | from about ₹3,263 (Uber page, 30 Oct 2026) | Last-minute one-way trips | Drivers may not know Munnar resorts; no sightseeing stops |
| KSRTC bus | about 4 h | from about ₹188 (ixigo listing) | Solo travellers, backpackers | Ordinary and Fast Passenger buses stop often; limited luggage space |
| Private AC bus / tourist coach | about 4–4.5 h | about ₹350–₹500 | Budget travellers wanting AC | Few departures; many are package-tour coaches |
| Self-drive hire car | 3.5–4 h | about ₹2,000–₹3,500 a day plus fuel | Confident hill drivers | Narrow ghat, lorries, fog; parking is tight in Munnar town |
Cost figures are our planning ranges for the November–March season; bus fares are from the ixigo Ernakulam–Munnar listing and the Uber Intercity page checked on 30 October 2026, and both change with fuel prices.
What is the Kochi to Munnar route, town by town?
- Ernakulam to Kolenchery (about 20 km): city traffic, the Hill Palace Museum at Tripunithura is a 45-minute detour if you have not seen it.
- Muvattupuzha (about 45 km): the first big town, good for a tea stop; the road from here is the Kochi–Dhanushkodi NH85.
- Kothamangalam (about 60 km): the last large town and the turn-off for Thattekad Bird Sanctuary (12 km north); the airport road from Perumbavoor joins here.
- Neriamangalam (about 75 km): the bridge over the Periyar marks the start of the forest ghat; the Inchathotty hanging bridge is a short detour.
- Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls (about 95–100 km): both beside the highway between Neriamangalam and Adimali, 2–3 km apart. Cheeyappara drops in seven steps and is the one with the roadside steps and tea stalls; Valara is viewed across the valley. Both are at their best from July to December and almost dry by April.
- Adimali (about 105 km): the spice-trade town where our drivers stop for lunch and where cardamom and pepper are cheapest; the Thekkady road branches off here, which is why Munnar–Thekkady transfers also pass this way.
- Pallivasal and Attukal waterfalls (about 120 km): the first tea estates and the Attukal falls viewpoint; Pothamedu viewpoint is just before town.
- Munnar town (about 130 km): the junction of three rivers and three roads – north-west to Eravikulam and Marayoor, north-east to Mattupetty and Top Station, south to Devikulam and Thekkady.
An alternative road from the airport side runs via Angamaly, Kalady and Kothamangalam, and a longer scenic option goes through Athirappilly and Vazhachal waterfalls, Malakkappara and the Valparai tea estates to Munnar – about 230 km and a full day, for travellers with time to spare.
How do you take the KSRTC bus from Kochi to Munnar?
Buses leave from the Ernakulam KSRTC bus stand near Ernakulam Junction railway station, not from the Vyttila Mobility Hub, so allow for a 10-minute auto ride if you arrive by private bus. KSRTC runs several services a day on the Ernakulam–Munnar route, with the earliest departures around dawn and the journey taking about 4 hours; the cheapest fare on the ixigo listing on 30 October 2026 was about ₹188 for an ordinary KSRTC service, with a private operator around ₹372 (ixigo Ernakulam–Munnar page). Tickets for KSRTC can be bought at the counter or on the KSRTC online booking site; private seats via the usual bus apps.
Ordinary KSRTC buses stop at every town and fill up at Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam, so board at the origin for a seat. Luggage goes under the seats or on the rack; a large suitcase is awkward. In Munnar, buses terminate at the town stand, from where resorts in Chinnakanal or Pallivasal are 15–25 km away by auto or hotel pick-up. For a bus-based plan with Munnar sightseeing by shared jeep, see our budget Kerala trip plan.
Is a taxi from Kochi to Munnar worth it?
For two or more people, usually yes. A one-way sedan is roughly ₹3,000–₹4,500 in our quotes, which for a couple is about the price of two AC bus seats plus the auto fares at each end, and it stops at the waterfalls, Adimali and Pothamedu without negotiation. Multi-day hire – the same car staying with you for Munnar sightseeing and the onward drive to Thekkady or Alleppey – is where it pays off, at roughly ₹2,800–₹3,800 a day for a sedan including fuel, tolls, parking and the driver’s allowance.
Things to confirm before you book: the pick-up point (Fort Kochi hotels add 30–40 minutes versus Ernakulam), whether Cheeyappara and Valara stops are included (they should be), and whether the driver stays overnight in Munnar on a multi-day hire (he will, at the hotel’s driver quarters). Our drivers carry the Eravikulam online booking link and know which resorts are reachable in a sedan; some Suryanelli and Kolukkumalai roads need a jeep.
Where should you stop between Kochi and Munnar?
Three stops are worth the time: Cheeyappara waterfalls for the view and a tea (20 minutes), Adimali for lunch and spices (45 minutes), and Pothamedu viewpoint just before town for the first proper tea-valley photograph (10 minutes). If you have an extra half day, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary near Kothamangalam, Kerala’s first bird sanctuary, is best at 06:00–09:00 with a local guide, and Inchathotty suspension bridge over the Periyar near Neriamangalam is a popular stop with families.
Avoid the roadside ‘spice garden’ tours between Adimali and Munnar unless you want a sales pitch; the plantations around Thekkady are better for that. Once in Munnar, our Munnar tourist places guide covers the 15 main sights with timings, and the Munnar trip plan for 2 days organises them into two loops. How does Kochi to Munnar fit into a Kerala itinerary?
Kochi–Munnar is the first leg of almost every Kerala loop. The standard sequence is Kochi (1 night) → Munnar (2 nights) → Thekkady (1 night) → Alleppey houseboat (1 night) → Kochi, which is exactly what our Kerala Honeymoon Special does over 6 days at ₹22,500 per person in the off-season band (1 Nov–19 Dec and 6 Jan–14 Mar) with a private sedan, 4-star hotels and the houseboat. With five days, drop Thekkady and drive Munnar–Alleppey direct as in our Kerala trip plan for 5 days; the return leg is described in Alleppey to Munnar. With seven days, follow the 7-day Kerala itinerary down to Kovalam. Budgets for each length are in our Kerala trip cost guide.
Best months for the drive are October to March, when the waterfalls still run, skies are clear and Munnar mornings are cold. The monsoon from June to September makes the ghat section slow and misty but spectacular; see best time to visit Kerala for month-by-month notes.
