Short answer: For a first Kashmir trip, plan 5 to 7 days. In 4 days you can do Srinagar and Gulmarg well; 5 days adds a night in Pahalgam; 7 days adds Sonmarg and slows everything down. Sleep at least one night on a Dal Lake houseboat, one in Gulmarg and one in Pahalgam instead of doing long day trips. Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar, Sonmarg about 80 km, Pahalgam about 95 km, and Gulmarg to Pahalgam about 140 km. Baisaran near Pahalgam is still closed in November 2026, so plans below use the open valleys.

Quick answer: which Kashmir itinerary fits you?

  • 4 days (3 nights): Srinagar 2N + Gulmarg 1N. Best for a long weekend.
  • 5 days (4 nights): Srinagar 2N + Gulmarg 1N + Pahalgam 1N. The most popular plan.
  • 6 days: see our separate 6-day Kashmir itinerary.
  • 7 days (6 nights): Srinagar 3N (with a Sonmarg day trip) + Gulmarg 1N + Pahalgam 2N. Relaxed, all four places.
  • With Vaishno Devi: start in Jammu, 1–2 nights in Katra, then the Vande Bharat train to Srinagar (Jammu Tawi–Srinagar service since 2 May 2026).

Distances between the main Kashmir stops

Route Distance Drive time
Srinagar – Gulmarg ~50 km 1.5–2 hours
Srinagar – Sonmarg ~80 km 2–2.5 hours
Srinagar – Pahalgam ~90–95 km 2.5–3 hours
Gulmarg – Pahalgam ~140 km 4–5 hours via Srinagar outskirts
Jammu – Srinagar (road) ~250 km 6–8 hours
Jammu Tawi – Srinagar (Vande Bharat) ~270 km by rail About 4 hours 50 minutes

Road figures are from our Srinagar taxi service and tour route maps; rail figures from India.com’s launch report (2 May 2026). Times stretch in winter snow and during the Amarnath Yatra in July–August.

4-day Kashmir itinerary (3 nights)

Best for: a long weekend, first-timers who want the houseboat and Gulmarg snow. Pahalgam and Sonmarg are left out on purpose; trying to fit them makes a 4-day trip a car trip.

Day Plan Night
1 Arrive Srinagar. Afternoon Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar), sunset shikara on Dal Lake. Houseboat
2 Drive to Gulmarg (50 km). Afternoon meadow walk, St Mary’s Church, Maharani Temple; snow play in winter. Gulmarg
3 Early gondola (Phase 1, Phase 2 if open). Back to Srinagar by late afternoon; Hazratbal or old city. Srinagar hotel
4 Shankaracharya Temple in the morning, then airport or station. —

Swap option: if you prefer rivers and meadows to snow, replace Gulmarg with an overnight in Pahalgam (see the Pahalgam guide for what is open).

5-day Kashmir itinerary (4 nights)

Best for: most first-time visitors. You sleep in all three main places and still get a slow morning or two.

Day Plan Night
1 Arrive Srinagar. Mughal gardens, sunset shikara. Houseboat
2 To Gulmarg; afternoon gondola or meadow walk. Gulmarg
3 Morning in Gulmarg (Khilanmarg in summer, ski lesson in winter), then drive about 140 km to Pahalgam. Pahalgam
4 Union taxi to Betaab, Chandanwari and Aru; afternoon drive to Srinagar via Pampore saffron fields and Awantipora ruins. Srinagar hotel
5 Shankaracharya or Hazratbal, then depart. —

This is the route of our Kashmir Houseboat Tour 5D/4N, from ₹21,999 per person (twin sharing, off-season) on its live page.

7-day Kashmir itinerary (6 nights)

Best for: families, couples and anyone who wants all four places without dawn starts every day. Travelling with children or parents? Our Kashmir family tour packages keep the driving days short.

Day Plan Night
1 Arrive Srinagar, settle in, evening shikara. Houseboat
2 Srinagar sightseeing: Shankaracharya, four Mughal gardens, Hazratbal, old city. Srinagar hotel
3 Sonmarg day trip (80 km): Thajiwas Glacier by pony or foot, or union taxi to Zero Point in season. Srinagar hotel
4 To Gulmarg; gondola in the afternoon or next morning. Gulmarg
5 Gulmarg morning, then drive to Pahalgam. Pahalgam
6 Pahalgam valleys by union taxi (Betaab, Chandanwari, Aru), riverside afternoon. Pahalgam
7 Drive to Srinagar airport (about 95 km) with a saffron-field stop. —

Our Kashmir 6N/7D package follows a similar route with a houseboat night, quoted to your dates. On a tighter budget, the Magical Kashmir 6D/5N economy tour starts from ₹16,999 per person (twin sharing).

Kashmir itinerary with Vaishno Devi

Since 7 June 2025 Vande Bharat trains have run between Katra and Srinagar, and from 2 May 2026 the service was extended to Jammu Tawi, crossing the Chenab rail bridge (Wikipedia; India.com, 2 May 2026). That makes Jammu–Katra–Srinagar a one-way trip with no backtracking:

  • Day 1: arrive Jammu, drive to Katra (about 50 km).
  • Day 2: Vaishno Devi darshan.
  • Day 3: Vande Bharat Katra to Srinagar; evening shikara.
  • Days 4–7: follow days 2–5 of the 5-day plan above, then fly out of Srinagar.

Suzu runs this as the Panoramic Kashmir with Vaishno Devi (5N/6D, from ₹17,499 per person) and the Kashmir Vaishno Devi tour with houseboat (6N/7D, from ₹24,999 per person), both twin sharing on their live pages. If train seats are sold out, we use our Jammu to Srinagar taxi (sedan from ₹6,399). Starting with the yatra? Compare our Kashmir with Vaishno Devi packages from Jammu.

How should you change the itinerary in winter?

  • Put Gulmarg in the middle and keep a spare half-day; the gondola’s Phase 2 often stops for wind or snow.
  • Sonmarg is reachable through the Z-Morh tunnel since January 2025, but Thajiwas and Zero Point are usually off in deep snow.
  • Pahalgam: Betaab is usually reachable after clearance; Aru and Chandanwari roads can stay blocked.
  • Book heated rooms and fly out mid-day, not early morning, as winter flights are sometimes delayed by fog or snow.

Month-specific planning: November, December, January.

What should you know before you lock the plan?

  • Union taxis: in Pahalgam and Sonmarg, side trips go in local union vehicles at board rates, not in your Srinagar cab.
  • Closed spots: Baisaran (Pahalgam) and long treks such as Kolahoi, Tarsar-Marsar and the Great Lakes were still closed in 2026. Check J&K Tourism and police advisories before travel.
  • Gondola tickets: book online in advance; JKTDC lists ₹750 for Phase 1 and ₹950 for Phase 2.
  • Costs: see our Kashmir trip cost guide for flights from major cities and local extras.

Which itinerary suits families, couples and older travellers?

Traveller Best plan Why
Families with small children 7 days Shorter drives each day; note that children under 5 are not allowed on the Gulmarg gondola (JKTDC).
Couples and honeymooners 5 or 7 days A houseboat night, a Gulmarg night and two quiet Pahalgam nights work well; Nigeen Lake is quieter than Dal.
Older travellers or anyone with heart or breathing issues 5 or 7 days, skip Phase 2 JKTDC bars heart and respiratory patients from the gondola; Phase 1, the meadows and the gardens are easy.
Snow seekers (Dec–Feb) 5 days with 2 Gulmarg nights More chances at an open Phase 2 and a ski lesson; Sonmarg as a bonus day trip.
Pilgrims Vaishno Devi plan Train from Katra removes the long Jammu–Srinagar road day.

What this means for your trip

If you have four days, do Srinagar and Gulmarg properly. With five, add a Pahalgam night. With seven, add Sonmarg and a second Pahalgam night. Whatever the length, sleep in Gulmarg and Pahalgam rather than commuting from Srinagar, and keep half a day spare for weather.

Kashmir itinerary: frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for Kashmir?

Five to seven days for a first trip. Five days covers Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam with a night in each; seven adds Sonmarg and a relaxed pace. Four days works for Srinagar and Gulmarg only.

What is the best order to visit Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg?

Start in Srinagar (houseboat), do Sonmarg as a day trip from there, then Gulmarg, then Pahalgam, and fly out from Srinagar. Gulmarg to Pahalgam is about 140 km, so that transfer is one of the longer drives.

Can I cover Kashmir in 3 days?

Only Srinagar plus one valley. Do a Srinagar day and a Gulmarg overnight, or a Srinagar day and a Sonmarg day trip. Pahalgam needs a night to be worth the drive.

Is it better to stay in Srinagar and do day trips?

For Sonmarg, yes. For Gulmarg and Pahalgam, an overnight is better: you get early gondola slots in Gulmarg and the Pahalgam valleys without a five-hour round trip.

Can I add Vaishno Devi to a Kashmir trip?

Yes. Start in Jammu, spend one or two nights in Katra, then take the Vande Bharat train from Katra to Srinagar. Add two days to any plan above.

Which places are closed in Kashmir in 2026?

Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam remained closed in November 2026, and long trekking routes were still shut in mid-2026. Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Srinagar and Pahalgam’s Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari are open. Check official advisories before travel.
