Updated: November 2026
Short answer: Pahalgam is a riverside town at about 2,200 m on the Lidder in Anantnag district, about 90–95 km (2.5–3 hours) from Srinagar. In November 2026 the town, the Lidder riverfront, Betaab Valley and Aru Valley are open to tourists, and Chandanwari reopened in 2026. Baisaran meadow, the site of the April 2025 attack, is still closed, and the long treks from Pahalgam (Kolahoi, Tarsar-Marsar) were also shut through 2026. Plan one or two nights, use local union taxis for the valleys, and check J&K Tourism and police advisories before you go.
Quick answer: Pahalgam at a glance (November 2026)
- Open: Pahalgam town and riverfront, Betaab Valley (reopened 17 June 2025), Aru Valley (reopened 29 September 2025), Chandanwari (reopened in 2026).
- Closed: Baisaran meadow; trekking routes such as Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar-Marsar (closed through mid-2026).
- From Srinagar: about 90–95 km via Anantnag, 2.5–3 hours.
- Local rule: outside taxis drop you in town; trips to Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari go in Pahalgam union vehicles at fixed board rates.
- Best time: April–June and September–October; December–February for snow, with some roads shut.
- Avoid for leisure: the Amarnath Yatra weeks in July–August, when traffic and security are heavy.

Is Pahalgam open for tourists in 2026?
Yes, the town is open and most of its day trips are running again. After the attack at Baisaran on 22 April 2025, the administration closed 48 of the Valley’s 87 official tourist destinations and reopened them in phases (Scroll, 22 April 2026). Betaab Valley and the Pahalgam town parks reopened in June 2025, Aru Valley on 29 September 2025 (The Tribune), and by 16 February 2026, 42 closed spots across J&K had reopened (Business Today, 17 February 2026).
Pahalgam has been slower to recover than Gulmarg or Sonamarg. On the first anniversary, Brighter Kashmir (22 April 2026) reported Baisaran still shut and Chandanwari closed; by 13 June 2026, Inside Kashmir reported Chandanwari had reopened, while Baisaran and Dabyan valley stayed closed and tourist vehicles were being stopped at Lower Chandanwari. In July 2026 The Wire reported nearly 30 destinations across J&K still closed. We found no reopening order for Baisaran up to early November 2026.
What this means: Pahalgam is worth a visit for the river, Betaab and Aru, but don’t plan your trip around Baisaran or a trek. Status can change at short notice, so check the J&K Tourism and Anantnag district or police advisories a few days before travel, and listen to your driver and hotel on the day.

How do the Pahalgam union taxis work?
This catches many first-time visitors. Your Srinagar cab brings you to Pahalgam and takes you back, but for Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari you hire a local union vehicle from the Pahalgam taxi stand. The rates are fixed by the union and shown on a board; you pay per vehicle, not per person.
- Typical cost: a 2026 travel guide put the three-valley circuit (Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari) at roughly ₹1,500–2,200 per vehicle (approx., August 2026). Single-valley trips cost less and bigger vehicles cost more. Read the board at the stand; it is the final word.
- Combine points: Betaab and Chandanwari are on the same road, Aru is on another. Two points fit easily in a morning.
- Not in your package price: union taxis are paid on the spot in almost every Kashmir package, including ours. Our Srinagar taxi service page lists them as an extra.
- Ponies: registered pony operators carry QR identity cards issued after verification (about 7,000 tourism workers had them by April 2026, per Brighter Kashmir). Ask to see the card and agree the rate and route before you mount.
How do you reach Pahalgam?
| From | Distance and time | Cab cost (Suzu rates, Nov 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar (city, airport or station) | About 90–95 km, 2.5–3 hours via Anantnag | One-way from ₹2,499 sedan / ₹3,299 Ertiga / ₹4,499 Innova Crysta. Same-day return from ₹3,000 sedan. |
| Anantnag | About 45 km, around 1.5 hours | Quoted on WhatsApp |
| Jammu | Via the Jammu–Srinagar highway and Anantnag; a long day | See Jammu to Srinagar taxi |
Our advice: don’t do Pahalgam as a day trip from Srinagar if you can avoid it. You spend five to six hours in the car and get only a couple of hours in the valleys. Local operators told Scroll in April 2026 that more visitors are doing exactly that and missing the best of the place. For all day-trip distances and fares from Srinagar, see Srinagar to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg.
When is the best time to visit Pahalgam?
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| April–June | Peak season. Snow on the peaks, green meadows, river full with snowmelt. Book early. |
| July–August | Amarnath Yatra season: heavy security, convoys and full hotels. Leisure travellers usually do better elsewhere. |
| September–October | Clear skies, autumn colour, easier rates. Our pick for couples and families. |
| November | Cold and quiet; first snow possible late in the month. |
| December–February | Snow and sub-zero nights (January averages about 4.9°C by day and -6.1°C at night). Aru and Chandanwari roads can be blocked; Betaab is usually reachable after clearance. |
| March | Snow melting, roads reopening; quiet shoulder month. |
For month-specific detail, see Kashmir in November and Kashmir in December.
Where should you stay in Pahalgam?
Pahalgam has rooms from simple guesthouses to large resorts. Areas, not names, matter most:
- Main market and riverside: walkable to the river and the taxi stand; most mid-range hotels are here.
- Aru road and Laripora side: quieter, more rural, cheaper guesthouses; you need a vehicle.
- Chandanwari road: bigger resorts with river views; farther from the market.
Rough nightly bands in 2026: budget guesthouses about ₹1,200–3,000, mid-range about ₹3,500–8,000, and top resorts well above ₹15,000 (approx., August 2026, per a Zoutons trip guide). Rates jump in May–June and around the Yatra. In winter, pay for proper heating.
A 2-day Pahalgam plan
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Leave Srinagar by 8 am. On the way, stop at the saffron fields of Pampore (bloom in late October–early November) and the Awantipora ruins. Reach Pahalgam by lunch, walk the Lidder riverfront in the afternoon. |
| Day 2 | Union taxi in the morning: Betaab Valley, then Chandanwari (if the road is open), then Aru Valley after lunch. Pony ride at Aru if you like. Drive back to Srinagar in the evening, or stay a second night and leave after breakfast. |
This is the Pahalgam leg of our standard trips. The Magical Kashmir 6D/5N economy tour starts from ₹16,999 per person (twin sharing), and the Kashmir houseboat tour 5D/4N with Gulmarg and Pahalgam starts from ₹21,999 per person (twin sharing, off-season), both on their live pages. Pair Pahalgam with Gulmarg for snow and the gondola, and see every option on our best Kashmir tour packages page.
What this means for your trip
Pahalgam still deserves a night in a Kashmir trip: the Lidder, Betaab and Aru are open and much quieter than before. Skip Baisaran, the Tulian and Kolahoi treks, and any package that promises them, until an official reopening is announced. Stay overnight rather than doing a rushed day trip, budget the union taxi separately, and check advisories a few days before you travel.
Pahalgam: frequently asked questions
Is Baisaran open for tourists in 2026?
No. Baisaran meadow has been closed since the 22 April 2025 attack. Reports in April and June 2026 confirmed it was still shut, and we found no reopening order up to early November 2026. Check J&K Tourism or Anantnag police advisories for the latest status before you travel.
Which places in Pahalgam are open now?
Pahalgam town and the Lidder riverfront, Betaab Valley (reopened June 2025), Aru Valley (reopened September 2025) and Chandanwari (reopened by June 2026, with vehicles stopped at Lower Chandanwari at that time). Long treks such as Kolahoi and Tarsar-Marsar stayed closed through mid-2026.
Is Pahalgam safe to visit now?
Tourists have been visiting Pahalgam again since mid-2025, with security deployed in the area and tourism workers verified with QR identity cards. Visit the open spots, follow local police instructions, and check official advisories before you go, as you would anywhere in Kashmir.
Can my Srinagar taxi take me to Betaab and Aru?
Usually not. Outside taxis drop you in Pahalgam, and trips to Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari go in local union vehicles at board rates, paid per vehicle. A 2026 guide put the three-valley circuit at roughly ₹1,500–2,200; check the board at the stand.
How far is Pahalgam from Srinagar?
About 90–95 km via Anantnag, 2.5–3 hours by car. Suzu’s one-way sedan drop starts at ₹2,499 and a same-day return at ₹3,000 (November 2026), but we recommend at least one night in Pahalgam.
Is there snow in Pahalgam in winter?
Yes, usually from December to February, with January the coldest month. Betaab is generally reachable after road clearance, while Aru and Chandanwari roads can stay blocked after heavy spells. Pack for sub-zero nights.
How many days are enough for Pahalgam?
One full day plus a night is the minimum; two nights is relaxed. In one day you can cover the riverfront, Betaab, Chandanwari and Aru by union taxi if all are open.
