Kashmir in November 2026: Weather, Snow and What’s Open

Short answer: yes, November is a good month for Kashmir if you want colour, quiet and the first snow rather than green meadows. Srinagar averages about 16°C by day and 1°C at night, chinar colour lasts into the second week, the Pampore saffron harvest is on, and Gulmarg usually gets its first proper snow in the first half of the month.

Short answer: yes, November is a good month for Kashmir if you want colour, quiet and the first snow rather than green meadows. Srinagar averages about 16°C by day and 1°C at night in November (1991–2020 normals), the chinar trees hold their red and gold into the second week, the saffron harvest at Pampore runs from late October to mid-November, and Gulmarg usually gets its first proper snow in the first half of the month. Hotels and houseboats are cheaper than in May–June or the Christmas week. The trade-off: nights turn freezing from mid-month, Dal Lake mornings are misty, and a snow spell can shut the Gulmarg Gondola or the Srinagar–Leh road for a day. As of 18 October 2026, the valley has already had its season’s first snow on the high passes, so an early-winter November looks likely this year.

Kashmir weather in November: what the numbers say

November is the month Kashmir switches from autumn to winter, and the switch usually happens around the middle of the month. The first week often feels like a crisp October; the last week feels like December. The table below uses the 1991–2020 climate normals for Srinagar and the typical pattern reported for the hill stations in recent Novembers.

Place (altitude) Typical November days Typical November nights Snow?
Srinagar (1,585 m) About 16°C on average; 18–20°C early, 10–12°C late About 1°C on average; first sub-zero night usually in the second half Rare in town; the surrounding mountains turn white
Gulmarg (2,650 m) 10–13°C on clear days, lower during a spell 0 to −2°C; colder after snow Likely. 7.6 cm fell on 4–5 November 2025 (MeT Srinagar via ETV Bharat, 5 Nov 2025)
Pahalgam (2,200 m) 12–15°C −1 to −4°C by late month Light snow in town possible; Chandanwari and Aru get more
Sonamarg (2,730 m) 8–12°C Below freezing most nights Yes on the meadows and Thajiwas; the road can close for a day after a fall

Srinagar’s normals: a mean maximum of 15.9°C and a mean minimum of 1.2°C in November, with only two or three rainy days and under 30 mm of precipitation in the whole month, so most days are dry and sunny. For comparison, October averages 23°C/6°C and December 10°C/−1.6°C, which is why early November still feels like autumn and late November feels like winter. In 2021 Srinagar recorded −1.5°C on the night of 19 November and Pahalgam −4.3°C, two to three degrees below normal for the date (The Tribune, 20 November 2021), so pack for freezing nights from mid-month onwards.

Will there be snow in Kashmir in November?

On the mountains, almost certainly. In the towns, it depends on the week. The pattern in recent years has been one or two western-disturbance spells in the first half of November that whiten Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Zoji La and the upper Pahalgam valleys, followed by long dry, clear stretches. On 4–5 November 2025, MeT Srinagar recorded 7.6 cm of snow at Gulmarg and 2.1 cm at Pahalgam, Sonamarg got a thin layer overnight, and the Srinagar–Leh highway was shut for the day while snow was cleared (ETV Bharat, 5 November 2025). The next five days were forecast clear with Gulmarg highs of 12–13°C and lows around 0°C (Kashmir Reader, 6 November 2025). That is a typical November: one snowy day, then sunshine on fresh snow.

This year the mountains have started early. The season’s first snow fell on Zoji La, Razdan Pass and Sinthan Top on 13–14 October 2026, with fresh snow at Gulmarg and more on Mount Apharwat on 15 October (The Hans India, 14 October 2026; Kashmir Images, 16 October 2026). The MeT forecast after that spell was for generally dry weather for about ten days. Snow in Srinagar city itself in November is unusual; if a white Dal Lake is the goal, read our guide to Kashmir winter travel and plan for late December to February instead.

What is open and what is not

Srinagar: Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens and the chinars

Everything in Srinagar runs in November. Houseboats on Dal and Nigeen lakes stay open; good ones have bukharis or electric heaters and extra quilts, and you should ask about heating before you book. Shikara rides are at their best around 3–5 pm when the light is low and the mist has burned off; early mornings are foggy and cold. The Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi) are open, and in the first half of November their chinar trees are at peak red and gold. Naseem Bagh near the university campus is the classic chinar grove for photographs. The Tulip Garden is closed: it opens only for about three to four weeks in spring.

Gulmarg and the Gondola

Gulmarg works well in November. The meadow is brown-gold early in the month and white after the first spell; the Gondola runs on normal days, and Phase 2 to Apharwat is where you will find snow even when the meadow is bare. Three things to know. First, the Gondola stops in high wind, snowfall, poor visibility or for maintenance, and Phase 2 is the first to close on a rough day, so keep a spare half-day in the plan. Second, book tickets only on the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation’s own portal, never through a tout, and check its notice board for scheduled maintenance days. Third, after heavy snow the last stretch from Tangmarg to Gulmarg may require a local chain-fitted taxi; our Snowclad Kashmir Superior package (6 days, ₹32,500 per person as listed on the package page) includes that transfer so it is not a surprise cost on the day.

Pahalgam: Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari

Pahalgam is open all winter. Betaab Valley and Aru are reachable throughout November by the local union taxis; Chandanwari, at the start of the Amarnath route, is the first to get snow and the road can be slushy after a spell. The Lidder riverside walks are at their best in the clear second half of the month. Two nights here rather than one lets you see the valleys at a slow pace, which is how our Stunning Kashmir 6-day package (₹28,500 per person as listed on the package page) is laid out.

Sonamarg and Zoji La

Sonamarg is a day trip from Srinagar in November and usually has snow on the meadows and the Thajiwas side valley. The Srinagar–Leh highway over Zoji La historically closed by late November and reopened by mid-April (an average of 135 closure days in earlier years), but the Border Roads Organisation has been keeping it open far later: the 2024–25 winter closure lasted just 33 days, the shortest ever, and the pass reopened on 1 April 2025 (Kashmir Observer, 1 April 2025). Day closures after a snowfall still happen, as on 5 November 2025. If you want Ladakh in the same trip, fly between the two: see Ladakh in winter for what that side looks like.

Pampore saffron harvest

This is November’s bonus. The saffron fields on the Pampore karewas, 15 km from Srinagar on the Pahalgam road, flower for roughly three weeks from around 21 October to mid-November, and the purple fields with pickers at work are a sight you cannot see in any other month. Ask your driver to stop on the way to Pahalgam; buy saffron only from a cooperative or GI-tagged seller.

Early November vs late November

  • 1–12 November (autumn, Diwali week): chinar colour at its peak, saffron harvest on, 18–20°C days in Srinagar, Gondola usually running, roads clear. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, so the long weekend of 7–8 November and the days just after it are the busiest patch of the month for domestic travellers; book hotels and Delhi–Srinagar flights early.
  • 13–20 November (the switch): first sub-zero nights in Srinagar, chinars shedding, Gulmarg and Sonamarg white after any spell, lower hotel rates, fewer people everywhere.
  • 21–30 November (early winter): cold clear days of 10–12°C, frozen puddles in the morning, snow play at Gulmarg likely, houseboat heating essential, the quietest week of the autumn with the best deals before the Christmas rush begins around 20 December (see Kashmir in December for what comes next).

A 5-day Kashmir plan for November

  • Day 1, Srinagar: fly in by noon, check into a heated houseboat or a Dal-side hotel, late-afternoon shikara ride, dinner on board.
  • Day 2, Srinagar: Mughal Gardens and Naseem Bagh in the morning light for the chinars, Hazratbal, Old City and the Jhelum ghats in the afternoon, Lal Chowk for pashmina and dry fruit.
  • Day 3, Gulmarg: leave by 8 am, Gondola Phase 1 and 2 before the afternoon wind, snow play on Apharwat, stay overnight in Gulmarg or return to Srinagar.
  • Day 4, Pahalgam via Pampore: saffron fields and Avantipora ruins on the way, then Betaab Valley and Aru by local taxi, night in Pahalgam.
  • Day 5, Pahalgam to Srinagar: Chandanwari in the morning if the road is clear, drive back for an evening flight, or add a Sonamarg day if you have a sixth day.

If you would rather have the week laid out for you, our Kashmir 6 nights 7 days package covers all four hubs with a houseboat night, and the best Kashmir tour packages compared page lines up our seven itineraries side by side.

Getting there and around in November

Fly. Srinagar airport has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh and other cities, and November fares are lower than in peak season. Morning fog can delay the first flights of the day in late November, so pick a late-morning or midday departure if your onward plan is tight. The Jammu–Srinagar road is the alternative: the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat has run since June 2025, and a Jammu to Srinagar taxi takes most of a day via the Banihal tunnel. Inside the valley, a Srinagar taxi for the whole trip is the practical choice; remember that Gulmarg, Pahalgam’s side valleys and Sonamarg’s meadow use local union vehicles for the last stretch, which your package or driver should include.

What to pack for Kashmir in November

  • A proper insulated jacket, a fleece mid-layer and thermals for evenings and for Gulmarg and Sonamarg.
  • Waterproof shoes with grip: slush after snow, wet gardens in the morning.
  • Woollen cap, gloves and a scarf; Apharwat is windy even on sunny days.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for snow glare, lip balm for dry air.
  • A power bank and a small torch: short days, early dark by 5:30 pm.
  • Cash for ponies, local taxis and village stops; cards work in Srinagar but not on the mountain.

What this means for your trip

If you want colour and quiet at a fair price, aim for the first half of November, but avoid the Diwali weekend itself if crowds bother you. If you want snow play without full-winter cold, the last ten days of November are a sweet spot: Gulmarg is usually white, the roads are clear and the rates are at their lowest before Christmas. Either way, build one spare half-day into the plan for a Gondola or Sonamarg closure, book a houseboat with heating, and treat the saffron fields as a fixed stop.
