Do I need a permit for Pangong and Nubra? тЦ╛
Yes. Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake are protected areas: Indian visitors need a permit with the Ladakh Environment Fee, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. The permits are arranged as part of this package. Carry printed copies for the checkposts.
Does starting from Srinagar help with altitude sickness? тЦ╛
Yes. Srinagar is at about 1,585 m and the road climbs over Zoji La (about 3,528 m) before reaching Leh at about 3,500 m, so the body adjusts over two road days instead of a single flight. It does not remove the risk: rest on the first evening in Leh and avoid alcohol.
When is the Srinagar to Leh road open? тЦ╛
Zoji La closes with snow every winter. The average closure has been about 135 days a year, although in 2024-25 it was shut for only about 33 days. Plan this route for roughly May to October and confirm the road status before travel.
Is there mobile network in Ladakh? тЦ╛
Prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh do not work here; postpaid connections do. BSNL has the widest coverage, followed by Airtel and Jio in Leh and major towns. Coverage at Pangong and in Nubra is patchy.
What clothes should I pack for a Kashmir Ladakh trip? тЦ╛
Layering is key. Carry light jackets for daytime in Srinagar and Leh and heavy woollens for nights at Pangong Lake and in Nubra, where temperatures can fall to around freezing even in summer.
