Short answer: A 3-day Jaisalmer trip plan runs: Day 1 the Golden Fort, Patwon ki Haveli and sunset at Gadisar Lake; Day 2 Bada Bagh and the abandoned village of Kuldhara on the way to a Sam dunes camp (about 40 km west) for a camel ride, folk show and night in a tent; Day 3 the border loop to Tanot Mata temple and the Longewala war memorial (roughly 250–280 km round trip). Arrive on the overnight 14087 Runicha Express from Delhi or a morning train from Jodhpur, and leave on the overnight 12468 Leelan Express to Jaipur. November to February is the season.

Is 3 days enough for Jaisalmer?

Three days is the right amount. Most visitors give Jaisalmer one night and leave with a camel ride and a blurred memory of a yellow fort. Two full days plus a camp night let you see the town properly, sleep in the desert, and make the long drive to the border, which is the part people talk about afterwards. Jaisalmer is a small town of about 60,000 people, so the sights in town are walkable; everything else is a drive through flat, empty country.

The order matters. Do the town first, because the overnight trains arrive in the small hours and you want a gentle day; do the camp second, because camps serve dinner early and you will want a shower and a proper bed afterwards; and do the border last, because it is a long day and best when you already know the town. If you have only two days, drop Day 3. Our Jaisalmer tourist places guide lists every sight with fees, and our Jaisalmer travel guide covers the basics.

Day 1: Jaisalmer Fort, havelis and Gadisar Lake

Time Stop Notes (fees from Triveni Cabs 2026 guide, checked 30 Oct 2026)
01:30–09:00 Arrive by Runicha Express, sleep Book the hotel from the previous night so you can check in at 02:00; most Jaisalmer hotels are used to this
09:30–12:30 Jaisalmer Fort Entry to the fort is free; it is a living fort with about 3,000 residents. Raj Mahal palace museum ₹50 Indian, 09:00–18:00. Jain temples open 08:00–12:00 and 15:00–19:00, so see them before noon. Walk the ramparts for the view over the golden town
12:30–14:00 Lunch Rooftop cafes inside or just below the fort; try ker sangri and the local gatte ki sabzi
14:30–16:30 Patwon ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli, Nathmal ki Haveli Patwon is a cluster of five 19th-century merchant houses; about ₹50–₹100 Indian depending on sections. The other two are a short walk; Nathmal is viewed from outside
17:00–18:30 Gadisar Lake 14th-century reservoir with chhatris and a carved gateway; paddle boats available; sunset light on the yellow stone. Free
19:00 onwards Evening The Desert Culture Centre near Gadisar runs an evening puppet show; otherwise dinner with a fort view from a rooftop in the town below

On staying inside the fort: hotels and guesthouses inside the walls are atmospheric, but the fort’s medieval drainage was never built for the water use of modern hotels and conservation groups have long flagged the damage. We book our guests in the town below, which has the same view looking up, and visit the fort by day.

Day 2: Bada Bagh, Kuldhara and a night at the Sam dunes

Time Stop Notes
09:30–10:30 Bada Bagh Royal cenotaphs on a low hill 6 km north of town; small state ticket, check at the gate; morning light is best
11:00–12:00 Kuldhara Village abandoned in the early 19th century, now a protected site about 18 km west on the Sam road; small ticket plus vehicle charge. Allow an hour to walk the ruined lanes and restored temple
12:00–13:00 Khaba Fort (optional) Small hill fort 8 km past Kuldhara with a one-room museum and peacocks; skip if short of time
13:00–15:00 Lunch in town, collect bags, drive to Sam Sam is about 40 km west, 45–60 minutes on a good road; camps are strung along the last 5 km
15:30–16:30 Check in, rest Swiss tents with attached bathrooms are standard; AC or heated tents cost more
16:30–18:15 Camel ride to the dunes for sunset Usually included; jeep safaris, quad bikes and parasailing are extras to negotiate. Return to camp by sunset under the 2026 rules
19:00–21:30 Folk programme and dinner Kalbelia dance, Manganiyar singers and a buffet; most camps now limit loud music late at night

The rules changed in 2026 after complaints about late-night noise and drunken behaviour: access to the open dunes is restricted after sunset, and roughly nine out of ten camps near Sam now accept only families and couples rather than all-male groups (Patrika, 2 December 2025). Our guide to the Sam sand dunes sunset rules explains what that means for your evening, and our Jaisalmer desert camp guide covers how to pick a camp. Khuri, about 50 km south-west, is the quieter alternative with fewer camps and higher dunes.

Day 3: the border loop to Tanot and Longewala

Leave the camp after an early breakfast, about 07:30, and head north-west. Tanot Mata temple is roughly 120 km from Jaisalmer on a good two-lane road through the Desert National Park’s fringe, about 2.5 hours. The temple is run by the Border Security Force and is famous for the unexploded Pakistani shells from 1965 and 1971 displayed in its compound; it is free, and the BSF canteen does tea. The international border viewpoint a little beyond Tanot requires a permit from the BSF post, which is issued on the spot on most days to Indian citizens with ID; carry Aadhaar and ask your driver to check the day before, as it is sometimes suspended.

From Tanot, drive about 45 km south-west to Longewala, where the war memorial marks the December 1971 battle made famous by the film Border. Captured tanks, a small museum and a sound-and-light-style film are on the site; allow an hour. Longewala back to Jaisalmer is about 110 km, 2–2.5 hours, so you are in town by 16:00 with time for a last walk and the overnight train. The total loop is roughly 250–280 km; distances here are approximate from mapping and our drivers’ experience, so budget a full day and carry water and snacks, since there is almost nothing between the stops.

Alternative Day 3: if the border does not appeal, spend the morning at the Desert National Park entrance near Sam or Khuri for the great Indian bustard habitat and fossil park (a permit and a guide are needed; arrange through your camp), and the afternoon at Khuri dunes or the Akal Wood Fossil Park 17 km from town on the Barmer road. Travellers continuing to Jodhpur can use our Jodhpur–Jaisalmer road guide in reverse; Osian and the Bishnoi villages are the stops.

How do you reach Jaisalmer and leave?

From Delhi by train: the 14087 Runicha Express leaves Old Delhi at 08:55 and reaches Jaisalmer at 01:30 the next morning, daily, stopping at Jodhpur 19:20–19:40 (ConfirmTkt, checked 30 October 2026); the 12249 Swarn Nagari Express from Delhi Shakurbasti takes about 10 h 20 m (RailMitra). From Jodhpur: the 12249 Swarn Nagari (04:00 → 09:00), 20492 (06:10 → 11:50) and 20486 (14:50 → 20:30) all run daily, about 5–6 hours (ConfirmTkt). From Jaipur: the 12468 Leelan SF Express, about 12 h 40 m overnight, daily. By road, Jodhpur is about 285 km and 5 hours.

By air: Jaisalmer airport has limited flights, mainly in the October–March season to Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai; check what is operating for your dates, as schedules change each winter. Jodhpur airport, 5 hours away by road, is the year-round alternative.

Leaving: the Leelan Express to Jaipur and the Runicha and Swarn Nagari back to Delhi are the usual exits. If you are heading on to Jodhpur, the early-morning trains leave you a full day there; see our Jodhpur tourist places guide. Our Rajasthan 5-day plan shows how Jaisalmer slots into a Jaipur–Jodhpur–Jaisalmer triangle.

When should you go, and what does it cost?

Mid-November to mid-February is the window. Days are 22–27°C and nights fall to around 5°C in late December, so a camp night needs a proper jacket; our Jaisalmer in December guide covers the peak month. The Desert Festival, usually three days just before Magh Purnima (about 18–20 February 2027, tentative), fills every camp and hotel. Most camps close from April to September, when afternoons exceed 40°C. Our best time to visit Rajasthan guide has the month-by-month picture.

For two people sharing in season, budget about ₹9,000–₹12,000 per person for the three days: two hotel nights at ₹2,500–₹4,000 a room, a standard camp at ₹2,500–₹4,000 per person, a car for Days 2 and 3 at about ₹3,000–₹4,500 a day shared, and roughly ₹300 in entry fees. December weekends and especially 31 December push the camp alone to ₹8,000–₹20,000 per person. Our Rajasthan trip cost guide has the full breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 3-day itinerary for Jaisalmer?

Day 1: Jaisalmer Fort, its Jain temples and palace museum, Patwon ki Haveli and sunset at Gadisar Lake. Day 2: Bada Bagh cenotaphs and Kuldhara ghost village on the way to a Sam dunes camp for a camel ride, folk show and night in a tent. Day 3: the border loop to Tanot Mata temple and the Longewala war memorial, or the Desert National Park and Khuri dunes.

How far is Sam from Jaisalmer?

Sam sand dunes are about 40 km west of Jaisalmer, 45 to 60 minutes by car on a good road, with Kuldhara village about 18 km along the way. Khuri dunes are about 50 km to the south-west and quieter. Tanot is roughly 120 km and Longewala about 110 km from town, so the border loop is a 250–280 km full day.

Can you stay on the dunes after sunset in Jaisalmer?

Under the 2026 rules access to the open dunes at Sam is restricted after sunset, and camel rides return to camp as the sun goes down. Many camps now accept only families and couples and limit late-night music. You still get the sunset, the folk programme, dinner and a night in a tent at the camp itself; check your camp’s own policy when booking.

How do I reach Jaisalmer from Delhi?

The 14087 Runicha Express leaves Old Delhi at 08:55 and arrives in Jaisalmer at 01:30 the next morning, daily, via Jodhpur. The 12249 Swarn Nagari Express from Delhi Shakurbasti takes about 10 hours 20 minutes. Flights operate mainly from October to March; otherwise fly to Jodhpur and drive 285 km, about 5 hours. Book a hotel for the arrival night so you can check in at 02:00.

Is the Tanot and Longewala trip worth it?

Yes, if you have the third day. Tanot Mata temple, run by the BSF, displays unexploded shells from the 1965 and 1971 wars, and Longewala is the site of the 1971 battle with captured tanks and a memorial. It is about 250–280 km of flat desert driving with few facilities, so start by 07:30, carry Aadhaar for the border viewpoint permit and water for the day.

How much does a 3-day Jaisalmer trip cost?

For two people sharing in the November–February season, about ₹9,000–₹12,000 per person: two hotel nights, one standard dunes camp night with dinner and camel ride, a shared car for two days and roughly ₹300 of entry fees. Christmas and New Year raise camp prices sharply, with 31 December often ₹8,000–₹20,000 per person. Trains from Delhi or Jaipur are extra.
