Short answer: Nainital in December is cold, clear and calm for most of the month, then very busy from Christmas to New Year. Expect days of 10–13°C, nights near 0–3°C with frost, and a lake that is still open for boating. Snow in the town itself is rare in December; Snow View, Kilbury and Mukteshwar are the better bets. The Kathgodam Shatabdi 12040 reaches the railhead by noon, and Corbett’s Dhikala zone reopens on 15 November.

Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)

  • Snow: Uncommon in town before January; more likely at Snow View (2,270 m), Kilbury and Mukteshwar (2,171 m, 51 km away).
  • Boating: Naini Lake runs all winter; rates are fixed and displayed at the boat stands.

What is the weather in Nainital in December?

Nainital sits in a bowl around its lake at about 2,084 m. The town’s long-term climate table gives December a mean daily maximum of 12.8°C and a mean minimum of 2.9°C, with a record low of −4.4°C; January is a shade colder at 10.9°C and 1.7°C (station data compiled on the town’s climate table, checked 23 October 2026). In practice that means bright, cold days where the Mall Road side in the sun is pleasant by 11 am, and the shaded Tallital end and the lakeside stay chilly. Nights bring frost on car windscreens and mist over the water at dawn.

Rain is low in December. When a western disturbance passes, you get a grey, cold day or two with rain in town and snow on the ridges above 2,200 m. Fog is rare up here; it sits on the plains below, which is why the drive from Kathgodam often starts in haze and climbs into sunshine.

Does it snow in Nainital in December?

Rarely in the town, and usually not before the last days of the month. The lake basin is just low enough that most December systems bring rain or sleet to the Mall and snow only to the surrounding peaks. The town’s own climate notes say snow falls on “peaks higher than 2,000 m”, which in Nainital means Snow View (about 2,270 m), Naina Peak (China Peak, 2,615 m), Tiffin Top and the Kilbury forest road. January and early February are the months when the Mall itself turns white in a good year.

If snow is the point of the trip, build in Mukteshwar, 51 km and about two hours away at 2,171 m, where snowfall is described as occasional in December and January, or Kilbury and Pangot, 12–15 km above the town on the forest road. None of these is a sure thing in December. For snow you can plan around, look at Himachal: our Himachal snowfall outlook 2026–27 and Kashmir in December guides explain where the odds are higher.

What should I do in Nainital in December?

  • Naini Lake boating: rowing boats, paddle boats and yachts run through winter from the Mallital and Tallital boat stands. Rates are fixed by the boat associations and displayed at the stand; confirm the fare before you step in. The 10 am to noon window has the calmest water.
  • Naina Devi Temple: on the Mallital flats at the north end of the lake, one of the Shakti Peeths; busiest at sunrise and on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
  • Snow View: take the ropeway from Mallital (short ride, long queue in peak week) or walk up for the Himalayan panorama: Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Kot on a clear morning.
  • Tiffin Top (Dorothy’s Seat) and Land’s End: a 4 km walk or pony ride from the Mall; go before 10 am for views and after 3 pm for light.
  • Mall Road: the 1.5 km lakeside promenade between Mallital and Tallital. It is a no-honking zone with a ₹1,000 fine under the district order, and light vehicles are barred during evening hours in peak seasons.
  • Eco Cave Gardens, the Raj Bhawan tour and the Zoo: good half-day fillers for families; the zoo at 2,100 m is a cold, pleasant walk.

Kainchi Dham, Bhimtal, Sattal and Mukteshwar: which day trips work in December?

Kainchi Dham, the Neem Karoli Baba ashram, is 17 km from Nainital and 9 km from Bhowali on the Almora road, open roughly 6 am to 7 pm with free entry. It draws 20,000–25,000 people on a normal day and far more on holiday weekends, so go on a weekday morning. Our Delhi to Kainchi Dham guide covers timings, parking and the festival crowd dates.

Place From Nainital December notes
Kainchi Dham 17 km, 45 min Weekday mornings; Christmas–New Year weekends are very crowded.
Bhimtal 22 km, 50 min Larger, warmer lake at 1,370 m; island aquarium; boating.
Sattal 23 km, 1 h Seven linked lakes; good birding in winter; kayaking.
Naukuchiatal 26 km, 1 h Quietest lake; paragliding when weather allows.
Mukteshwar 51 km, 2 h 2,171 m; Shiva temple, Chauli ki Jali cliff; best snow odds near Nainital.
Kilbury / Pangot 12–15 km, 40 min Forest road, birding, first snow after a disturbance.

Distances are road distances from Nainital’s Tallital end; times assume a December weekday. Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal fit into one day; Mukteshwar deserves its own.

Can I add Jim Corbett to a December Nainital trip?

Yes, and December is a good month for it. Corbett Tiger Reserve’s Dhikala zone, the one with forest rest houses inside the park and the Ramganga grasslands, reopens on 15 November every year after the monsoon; Jhirna and Dhela stay open all year, and Bijrani reopens in mid-October (corbettonline.uk.gov.in, checked 23 October 2026). All permits, vehicles, guides and rest-house beds are booked online on the official portal, and Dhikala day visits run only by the park’s canter bus. Ramnagar, the gateway, is about 65 km and two hours from Nainital. For the wider picture on parks, zones and booking windows, see our tiger safari in India guide. Dhikala rest-house beds open for online booking some weeks ahead and Christmas-week dates go within minutes of release, so decide early.

How do I reach Nainital from Delhi in December?

Kathgodam is the railhead, 35 km and about 1.5 hours below the town. The 12040 Kathgodam Shatabdi leaves New Delhi at 06:20 and arrives at 11:55, daily, a 5 h 35 min run (ConfirmTkt timetable, checked 23 October 2026). Overnight trains from Delhi also serve Kathgodam; check IRCTC for the current ones. By road, Delhi to Nainital is roughly 300–320 km via Moradabad and Haldwani, 7–8 hours in December because of morning fog on the plains. Pantnagar airport is about 70 km away with limited flights. A car from Kathgodam is the normal last leg; shared taxis and KMOU buses also run.

A 3-day Nainital plan for December

Day Plan Evening
1 Shatabdi to Kathgodam, car up by 2 pm. Naina Devi darshan, boat on the lake at 3 pm, Mall Road walk. Dinner in Mallital.
2 Snow View at opening, then Kainchi Dham by 10 am on a weekday, Bhowali fruit market, Bhimtal and Sattal in the afternoon. Back by dark; roads are unlit.
3 Tiffin Top walk at 8 am, or a Mukteshwar snow-chasing drive if clouds cleared overnight. Leave for Kathgodam by 3 pm. Train or drive to Delhi.

With two more days, add Corbett (Dhikala or Bijrani) on the way back. Nainital also features in our best places to visit in December in India and November round-ups.

Christmas–New Year rush, parking and what to pack

Between 24 December and 2 January, Nainital runs at capacity. The district administration’s standing advice is that parking on the Mall is restricted in peak seasons, with the official alternatives at the Mallital flats, the taxi stand, Tallital and KMVN’s Sukhatal parking; (nainital.nic.in tips for tourists, checked 23 October 2026). In past peak seasons, once those lots filled, the administration has held tourist vehicles at Haldwani or Bhowali and sent visitors up by shuttle; expect the same if you arrive late on 31 December. The Mall is closed to light vehicles in the evening during peak months, and the no-honking rule carries a ₹1,000 fine. If you are coming for New Year’s Eve, book a hotel with its own parking, arrive before noon, and plan to walk. The first three weeks of December are the opposite: empty boats, clear peaks and off-season rates. Our Kumaon packages are custom and priced on request because December rates vary so much by date; tell us your dates for a written quote.

  1. Thermals, a fleece and a windproof jacket; the lakeside wind after sunset is the cold you will remember.
  2. Cap, gloves and a scarf for the boat and for Snow View at 8 am.
  3. Walking shoes with grip for Tiffin Top and the Kilbury road.
  4. Sunglasses and sunscreen; December sun off the water is strong.
  5. A small day bag with water and snacks for Kainchi queues.
  6. Cash for boats, ponies and parking; UPI works in most shops.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nainital worth visiting in December?

Yes, especially in the first three weeks. Days are clear and cold at 10–13°C, nights near 0–3°C, the lake is open for boating and the Himalayan view from Snow View is at its sharpest. Christmas to New Year is crowded, with parking caps and peak rates. Snow in town is rare in December, so treat it as a bonus rather than the reason to go.

Does Nainital get snow in December?

Rarely in the town itself; snow usually reaches the Mall only in January or February. December systems more often bring rain to the lake and snow to the ridges above 2,200 m: Snow View, Naina Peak, Tiffin Top and the Kilbury road. Mukteshwar, 51 km away at 2,171 m, has better odds. Nothing is certain, so plan a snow day as optional.

Is boating open on Naini Lake in December?

Yes. Rowing boats, paddle boats and yachts operate from the Mallital and Tallital boat stands through winter, weather permitting. Fares are fixed by the boat associations and displayed at the stand, so check the board and agree the route before boarding. Late morning has the calmest water and the best light; the lake can be windy and very cold after 4 pm.

How do I reach Nainital from Delhi by train?

Take the 12040 Kathgodam Shatabdi, which leaves New Delhi at 06:20 and reaches Kathgodam at 11:55 daily, per the ConfirmTkt timetable checked on 23 October 2026. Kathgodam is the last station; Nainital is 35 km and about 1.5 hours uphill by taxi or bus. Overnight trains also run; verify current ones on IRCTC before booking.

Is Jim Corbett open in December?

Yes. Corbett’s Dhikala zone, the main one with rest houses inside the park, reopens on 15 November every year; Jhirna and Dhela are open year-round and Bijrani from mid-October. All permits, safari vehicles, guides and rest-house beds are booked only on the official portal, corbettonline.uk.gov.in. Ramnagar is about 65 km from Nainital, so a two-night Corbett add-on works well.

How crowded is Nainital at New Year?

Very. From 24 December to 2 January hotels run full, the Mall is closed to light vehicles in the evenings and parking is restricted to designated lots at Mallital, Tallital and Sukhatal; when they fill, cars are held below the town. Book a hotel with parking, arrive before noon, walk everywhere, and budget for peak rates. For quiet, come in the first half of December instead.
