Short answer: yes, December is a good month for Kashmir if you want snow and are ready for real cold. Srinagar averages about 10°C by day and −1.6°C at night (1991–2020 normals), Gulmarg is usually white by the second half of the month, and Chillai Kalan, the 40 coldest days, starts on 21 December. Go in the first three weeks for lower prices; Christmas–New Year is the busiest, costliest week.

Quick answer

  • Weather: Srinagar about 10°C / −1.6°C on average; Gulmarg and Pahalgam −4°C to −9°C on the coldest nights.
  • Snow: near-certain at Gulmarg and Sonamarg by late December; Srinagar town gets snow in some years, not all.
  • Best weeks: 1–19 December for value and quiet; 20–31 December for the best odds of snow (and the biggest crowds).
  • Open: Srinagar, Gulmarg and the Gondola, Pahalgam, Sonamarg (all year since the Z-Morh tunnel). Usually shut: Mughal Road, Gurez, Sinthan Top.
  • Days needed: 5–6, with one spare half-day for weather.

How cold is Kashmir in December?

Cold enough that heating decides how good your trip is. The 1991–2020 normals for Srinagar (1,585 m) give a mean maximum of about 10°C and a mean minimum of about −1.6°C for December, against 15.9°C and 1.2°C in November. Days are mostly dry and sunny, but the sun sets early and it is dark by about 5:30 pm, so plan sightseeing between 10 am and 4 pm.

The averages hide the cold snaps. On the night of 20–21 December 2024, the first night of Chillai Kalan, Srinagar dropped to −8.5°C, its coldest December night since 1990 and the third lowest in a century of records; Pahalgam recorded −8.6°C, Gulmarg −6.2°C, and parts of Dal Lake and many water supply lines froze (Kashmir Reader, 21 December 2024; National Herald/PTI, 21 December 2024). A year later, on 21–22 December 2025, Chillai Kalan opened with about 2 inches of fresh snow at Gulmarg, up to 6 inches at Sadhna Top, and Srinagar lows of 0 to 1°C with days of 8–10°C (Outlook India, 22 December 2025). Those two years are a fair picture of the range: dry and bitterly cold, or snowy and milder.

Place (altitude) December days December nights Snow in December?
Srinagar (1,585 m) About 10°C on average; 8–10°C in late December About −1.6°C on average; −8.5°C on 21 Dec 2024 Some years, usually after 20 December; not guaranteed
Gulmarg (2,650 m) 0–5°C −4°C to −8°C Very likely; the meadow is normally white by Christmas
Pahalgam (2,200 m) 3–8°C −5°C to −9°C; −8.6°C on 21 Dec 2024 Likely in the side valleys (Aru, Chandanwari); patchy in town
Sonamarg (2,730 m) Around 0–5°C Well below freezing Yes; reported in the 21–22 December 2025 spell

Hill-station ranges are approximate typical values; the dated figures are recorded readings. None of this is a forecast.

Will it snow in Kashmir in December 2026?

On the mountains, almost certainly; in Srinagar, maybe. December snow comes with western disturbances, usually one or two spells a month, and most of it lands on Gulmarg, Apharwat, Sonamarg and the upper Pahalgam valleys. Snow in Srinagar city is more of a January event, but it does happen in late December in some years.

This season has started early. The first snow of autumn fell on Zoji La, Razdan Pass and Sinthan Top on 13–14 October 2026, with fresh snow on Apharwat above Gulmarg on 15 October (we covered the details in our Kashmir in November guide). That says nothing certain about December, but it does mean the high slopes start the month with a base. As of 23 October 2026 there is no official December forecast yet; IMD’s extended-range outlook covers only a few weeks ahead, so check the MeT Srinagar bulletin in the week before you fly.

If snow is the whole point, the safest plan is a stay that includes Gulmarg after 15 December. If you want snow in Srinagar itself, January is the better bet; see our Kashmir winter travel guide for the deep-winter months.

What is Chillai Kalan and does it matter for your trip?

Chillai Kalan is the Kashmiri name for the 40 harshest days of winter, from 21 December to 31 January. It is not an official closure, nothing shuts because of it, and tourism carries on. What it means in practice: the coldest nights of the year, the highest chance of snow in the valley floor, frozen pipes in older buildings, and occasional power cuts in heavy snow. Locals wear the pheran (a long woollen cloak) with a kangri (a small wicker pot of embers) underneath, and harissa, a slow-cooked mutton dish, is sold from early morning in Srinagar’s old city. For a visitor, Chillai Kalan is the reason to book a hotel or houseboat with proper heating and hot water, not a reason to avoid the month.

What is open in Kashmir in December?

Srinagar: Dal Lake and the old city

Everything in Srinagar works in December. Houseboats on Dal and Nigeen lakes stay open, but only the better ones have a bukhari (wood stove) or electric heating, heated blankets and reliable hot water; ask before you book, because a cheap, unheated boat on a −5°C night is miserable. Shikara rides are best from noon to 3 pm, when the mist has lifted. The Mughal Gardens are open but bare; the chinars have dropped their leaves by December. The Tulip Garden is closed until its spring season. Shops in Lal Chowk and the old city stay open for pashmina, kahwa and dry fruit.

Gulmarg and the Gondola

Gulmarg is the heart of a December trip. After the first proper spell the meadow turns white, and the Gondola runs to Kongdoori (Phase 1) and up to Apharwat (Phase 2), where snow is deepest. The Gondola stops for high wind, heavy snowfall, poor visibility and maintenance, and Phase 2 closes first, so keep a spare half-day. Book only on the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation’s official portal, never through touts at the base. Skiing gets going once there is a deep enough base, usually from late December into January; in early December, expect snow play, sledges and snowmobile rides on the meadow rather than full ski runs. After heavy snow, the last stretch from Tangmarg may need a chain-fitted local taxi. Our Snowclad Kashmir Superior package (6 days, ₹32,500 per person as listed on the package page) builds in that transfer and a Gulmarg night.

Pahalgam: Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari

Pahalgam stays open all winter and is at its quietest in December. Aru Valley, closed after the April 2025 attack, was among the spots reopened on 30 September 2025 (The Hitavada, 30 September 2025), and in February 2026 the administration said 42 of the nearly 50 closed sites had reopened (Business Today, 17 February 2026). Status of individual meadows can still change, so confirm the day’s access with your driver or the local taxi union before you set out. Chandanwari and Aru get snow first; union taxis or chained vehicles may be needed after a fall. Two nights here suit our Stunning Kashmir 6-day package (₹28,500 per person as listed on the package page).

Sonamarg: now reachable all winter

This is what changed for December trips. The 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel between Gagangir and Sonamarg was inaugurated on 13 January 2025 to keep Sonamarg reachable all year, bypassing the avalanche-prone stretch that used to cut it off every winter (Kashmir Life, 13 January 2025). Sonamarg in December is a snowfield day trip from Srinagar, about 2.5–3 hours each way. Thajiwas Glacier, near Sonamarg, was listed among reopened sites in February 2026 (Business Today, 17 February 2026), but in deep snow you will reach the edge of the meadow, not the glacier. The Zoji La road beyond, to Ladakh, can shut for days after snow.

Usually closed in December

  • Mughal Road (Shopian–Poonch over Pir Ki Gali): usually closed for the winter once snow sets in.
  • Gurez and Bangus: cut off by snow on the passes; Gurez was still listed as awaiting snow clearance in February 2026.
  • Sinthan Top (Kokernag–Kishtwar): snowbound.
  • Tulip Garden: spring only.

Early December vs Christmas–New Year: which is better?

Dates (2026) What to expect Best for
1–14 December Dry, sunny, cold; snow on Apharwat and Sonamarg, patchy on Gulmarg meadow; lowest hotel rates of the winter Couples, budget trips, photography in clear light
15–20 December Better snow odds on Gulmarg; still quiet; nights often below −5°C in Pahalgam Snow without the holiday crowds
21–24 December Chillai Kalan begins (Mon 21 Dec); coldest nights; rates start rising Travellers who want deep winter
25 Dec–3 Jan Christmas (Fri 25 Dec) and New Year (Fri 1 Jan 2027) long weekends; Gulmarg and the Gondola at their busiest; flights and hotels at peak prices Families on school holidays who book early

If your dates are fixed to the holiday week, book Gulmarg rooms and Delhi–Srinagar flights now, buy Gondola tickets as soon as the portal opens your date, and plan Gondola rides for early morning before the queues build.

A 6-day Kashmir itinerary for December

  • Day 1, Srinagar: fly in by midday, check into a heated houseboat or Dal-side hotel, short shikara ride before 3 pm, kahwa on board.
  • Day 2, Sonamarg day trip: leave at 8 am through the Z-Morh tunnel, snow play and sledges on the meadow, back in Srinagar before dark.
  • Day 3, Gulmarg: early drive, Gondola Phase 1 and 2 before the afternoon wind, snowmobile or sledge on the meadow, overnight in Gulmarg.
  • Day 4, Gulmarg to Pahalgam: a second Gondola try if day 3 was closed, then the drive to Pahalgam via Pampore and the Avantipora ruins.
  • Day 5, Pahalgam: Aru and Betaab by local taxi if open that day, riverside walk along the Lidder, early night by the heater.
  • Day 6, back to Srinagar: old-city morning for harissa and pashmina, afternoon flight.

For a fuller week with a houseboat night, our Kashmir 6 nights 7 days package follows the same order, and the best Kashmir tour packages compared page lines up the alternatives.

How do you get to Kashmir in December?

Fly if you can. Srinagar has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh and other cities, and a 1.5-hour flight avoids the Jammu–Srinagar highway, which closes for a day or more after heavy snow near Banihal. Snow at Srinagar airport itself can delay or cancel flights, so do not book a tight same-day connection home. The rail option is the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat, running since June 2025. By road, a Jammu to Srinagar taxi takes most of a day when the road is clear. Inside the valley, a Srinagar taxi for the whole trip is the practical choice, with local union vehicles for the last stretch at Gulmarg, Pahalgam’s side valleys and Sonamarg.

What to pack for Kashmir in December

  • A down or heavily insulated jacket, a fleece and two sets of thermals; jeans alone are not enough at −8°C.
  • Waterproof snow boots with grip, plus woollen socks; sneakers soak through in an hour of snow play.
  • Gloves (waterproof for snow), a woollen cap, a neck warmer.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: snow glare on Apharwat is strong even when it is freezing.
  • Moisturiser and lip balm for the dry cold; a power bank, because batteries drain fast in the cold.
  • Cash for local taxis, ponies, sledges and snow-clothes hire at Gulmarg; cards work in Srinagar but not on the slopes.

Boots and long coats can be hired at Gulmarg and Sonamarg if you do not own them; agree the price before you take them.

Kashmir or Himachal for December snow?

Kashmir is the more dependable snow destination in December: Gulmarg sits higher than Manali and Shimla, the Gondola puts you on deep snow even before the meadow is white, and Sonamarg is now reachable all winter. Himachal is cheaper to reach by road from Delhi and Punjab, and Solang and Sissu near Manali usually have snow by late December. Our Manali vs Kashmir comparison sets them side by side, and the best places to visit in December in India guide covers the beaches and deserts too.

What this means for your trip

Book early December for value and quiet, the 15–20 December window for snow without the holiday crush, and Christmas–New Year only with early bookings and patience for queues. Whatever the week, pay for heating, plan one spare half-day for a Gondola or road closure, check the MeT Srinagar bulletin a few days out, and keep the last day free of tight connections.

Kashmir in December: FAQ

Is December a good time to visit Kashmir?

Yes, if you want snow and can handle the cold. Gulmarg and Sonamarg are usually white, prices are low in the first half of the month, and Srinagar is calm. It is not the month for gardens, flowers or green meadows, and nights in Pahalgam and Gulmarg can drop to −8°C or lower.

Does it snow in Srinagar in December?

Sometimes. Snow in Srinagar city is most likely after 20 December and more common in January. Gulmarg, Apharwat and Sonamarg get snow far more reliably; on 21–22 December 2025 Gulmarg had about 2 inches of fresh snow while Srinagar saw lows of 0–1°C.

When does Chillai Kalan start in 2026?

Chillai Kalan runs from 21 December to 31 January every year, so it starts on Monday 21 December 2026. It is the coldest stretch of winter, not a closure; tourism, flights and the Gulmarg Gondola continue, with weather-related stoppages.

Is the Gulmarg Gondola open in December?

Normally yes, both phases, but it halts for wind, heavy snowfall, poor visibility and maintenance, and Phase 2 to Apharwat closes first. Book on the J&K Cable Car Corporation’s official portal and keep a spare half-day in the plan.

Can you go to Sonamarg in December?

Yes. Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened on 13 January 2025, Sonamarg is reachable through the winter as a day trip from Srinagar, though the road can close for a few hours or a day after heavy snow. The Zoji La road beyond to Ladakh may be shut.

How many days are enough for Kashmir in December?

Five to six days: two in Srinagar (one of them a Sonamarg day trip), one or two in Gulmarg and two in Pahalgam. Add a day over Christmas–New Year, when queues and road delays eat time.

Is Kashmir crowded at Christmas and New Year?

Yes. Christmas (Friday 25 December 2026) and New Year (Friday 1 January 2027) both make long weekends, so Gulmarg hotels, the Gondola and Delhi–Srinagar flights are at their busiest and most expensive. Book early or travel before 20 December.
