Short answer: January is India’s coldest month, which makes it the best month for two opposite trips: snow in the Himalaya (Manali, Shimla, Auli, Gulmarg, Kashmir) and sun in the south (Goa, Kerala, Andaman). Rajasthan, Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch and the tiger reserves are at their most pleasant. January 2027 has three long weekends, including Republic Day on Tuesday 26 January, and Suzu Himachal packages start from ₹12,999 per person.

Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)

  • For snow: Manali averages 10.5°C by day and −1.1°C at night in January (IMD normals 1991–2020); Gulmarg and Auli are the most reliable ski slopes; Kashmir is in Chillai Kalan, its 40 coldest days, until 30 January.
  • For sun: Goa 32.5°C/20°C, Alleppey 32.7°C/22.5°C, Port Blair 29.9°C/23°C (1991–2020 normals). Dry and pleasant everywhere in the south.
  • For heritage: Jaipur 22.5°C/8.4°C; Jaipur Literature Festival 14–18 January 2027; Rann Utsav tent city open until 7 March 2027, full moon 21–23 January.
  • Festivals: Lohri Thursday 14 January, Makar Sankranti and Pongal Friday 15 January, Republic Day Tuesday 26 January 2027 (Drik Panchang).
  • Long weekends: 1–3 January, 14–17 January (one leave) and 23–26 January (one leave).
  • Suzu prices: Kullu Manali honeymoon 3N/4D from ₹12,999; Shimla Manali ex-Delhi 5N/6D from ₹14,499; Snowclad Kashmir Superior from ₹32,500 per person, indicative, confirmed on quote. Peak supplement of about 25% applies 20 December to 5 January.

Why is January a good month to travel in India?

Three reasons. First, the weather is at its extremes in a useful way: the hills have snow and the south has dry sunshine. Second, crowds thin out after 5 January, when the New Year rush ends and hotel rates in Manali, Goa and Kerala drop back from their peak. Third, the calendar helps: Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal fall mid-month, and Republic Day on a Tuesday makes a four-day break with one day of leave.

The trade-off is cold in the north: foggy mornings in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur delay trains and flights, and desert nights drop to single digits. Pack properly and keep buffer time on travel days. If you are choosing between months, our guides to the best places to visit in December and the best places in November show how the picture shifts.

Snow destinations: Manali, Shimla, Auli, Gulmarg, Kashmir and Spiti

Manali is the default January snow trip and for good reason. Solang Valley, 13 km from town, holds snow through the month, and Manali town itself usually gets at least one snowfall in January, though no date can be promised. The Atal Tunnel opens to Sissu between snow spells; after heavy snow police restrict traffic beyond Solang, sometimes to 4×4 vehicles with chains. Rohtang Pass is closed until spring. Our Manali in January guide has the detail, and the Himachal snowfall winter 2026–27 page tracks live conditions. Prices: the Kullu Manali honeymoon package (3N/4D) starts from ₹12,999 per person and the Shimla Manali ex-Delhi package (5N/6D) from ₹14,499, both indicative and confirmed on quote. Dates up to 5 January carry the peak-season supplement of about 25%; see our Christmas and New Year Manali packages for that week.

Shimla is the softer option: about four hours from Chandigarh, with Kufri (2,700 m) and Narkanda (2,700 m, 60 km on) for snow when the town itself is dry. January days average about 9°C and nights stay just above freezing. The Kalka section of the toy train is shut until 30 November 2026; check before booking rail for January.

Auli in Uttarakhand is India’s second ski destination, reached via Rishikesh and Joshimath (about 10 hours’ drive from Delhi, usually broken at Rishikesh). The slopes run from about 2,500 m to 3,000 m with a chair lift, and January and February are the core season; check the status of the Joshimath–Auli ropeway before you go.

Gulmarg and Kashmir are in Chillai Kalan, the 40-day hard-winter period from 21 December to 30 January. Srinagar averages 7.1°C by day and −1.9°C at night; Gulmarg is far colder, with deep snow and the gondola running in two phases when weather permits. The Snowclad Kashmir Superior package starts from ₹32,500 per person, indicative and confirmed on quote, with Srinagar houseboats and hotels, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Read Kashmir in December for how the season builds.

Spiti in winter is for the brave. The Manali–Kaza road over Kunzum La has been closed by snow since 15 October 2026, so access is only via Shimla and Kinnaur, a two-day drive on roads that can shut for days. Nights of −15°C to −25°C are normal in Kaza and homestays are the only accommodation. The reward is the frozen Spiti river, Key monastery in snow and the peak snow leopard season. Our winter Spiti valley guide 2026–27 explains the preparation.

Sun destinations: Goa, Kerala and the Andamans

Goa in January is dry, 32°C by day and 20°C at night, with the sea calm and the sunset season in full swing. Rates ease from the second week. Our Goa tour packages cover north and south beaches with airport transfers.

Kerala has its driest and least humid month: Alleppey averages 32.7°C by day, 22.5°C at night and only about 16 mm of rain. It is the ideal month for an Alleppey houseboat night, Munnar tea estates and Periyar. See our Kerala tour packages.

The Andaman Islands are at their calmest. Port Blair averages 29.9°C and 23°C, ferries to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil (Shaheed Dweep) run reliably, and water clarity for snorkelling and diving is at its best. Book ferries and resorts early; January is peak season on the islands.

Heritage and desert: Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Rann of Kutch and Hampi

Jaipur hosts the 20th Jaipur Literature Festival from 14 to 18 January 2027 at Hotel Clarks Amer (announced by the organisers in September 2026). The festival coincides with Makar Sankranti on Friday 15 January, when the old city’s rooftops fill with kite flyers. Book Jaipur hotels early for that week.

Jaisalmer is at its best for desert camps at Sam and Khuri: 23°C by day and 9°C at night, so carry a jacket for the dune dinner. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival is tied to Magha Purnima and is expected on 18–20 February 2027, not in January, so January visitors get the dunes without festival crowds. Both cities feature in our Rajasthan tour packages.

Rann of Kutch runs its Rann Utsav tent city at Dhordo from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027. The white salt desert is at its most photogenic under the full moon, and the January full-moon window is 21–23 January 2027, which lines up with the Republic Day weekend. Bhuj is the gateway, about three hours from the tent city.

Hampi in Karnataka is a long-weekend favourite from Bengaluru and Hyderabad. January is cool enough to walk the Vijayanagara ruins all day and climb Matanga hill for sunrise.

Wildlife: Ranthambore and Corbett

January is a strong month for tiger reserves because the forest is dry and visibility is good, but morning safaris in open jeeps are cold: carry gloves and a cap, and use the blankets resorts provide. Ranthambore near Sawai Madhopur is the easy add-on to a Jaipur trip (about 3.5 hours by road). Corbett’s Dhikala zone, the one with forest rest houses inside the park, has been open since 15 November and fills up fast; book the forest lodge and permits well ahead, or stay in the Dhela or Jhirna zones, which are open year-round.

For reliable snow on the ground, Gulmarg in Kashmir and Auli in Uttarakhand are the strongest choices, followed by Solang Valley near Manali and Narkanda near Shimla. Manali town itself usually sees snowfall at some point in January but no date is certain. Spiti is certain to be cold and snowy but is a hard trip.

Is January a good time to visit Goa and Kerala?

Yes, it is one of the best months for both. Goa averages 32.5°C by day and 20°C at night with almost no rain, and Alleppey 32.7°C and 22.5°C with the lowest humidity of the year. Rates peak around New Year and ease from the second week of January.

What are the long weekends in January 2027?

Three. Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January for New Year; Thursday 14 (Lohri) to Sunday 17 January with leave on Friday 15 (Makar Sankranti and Pongal, a holiday in many states); and Saturday 23 to Tuesday 26 January (Republic Day) with leave on Monday 25. Dates from Drik Panchang.

How much does a Manali trip cost in January?

Our Kullu Manali honeymoon package (3N/4D) starts from ₹12,999 per person and the Shimla Manali ex-Delhi package (5N/6D) from ₹14,499 per person, twin sharing, indicative and confirmed on quote. The peak supplement of about 25% applies only to dates from 20 December to 5 January.

Is Kashmir open for tourists in January?

Yes. Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam operate through winter, and January is the heart of Chillai Kalan, the 40 coldest days ending on 30 January. Expect snow, −2°C nights in Srinagar and occasional flight delays. Our Snowclad Kashmir Superior package starts from ₹32,500 per person, indicative, confirmed on quote.

Are the Jaisalmer Desert Festival and Rann Utsav on in January 2027?

Rann Utsav, yes: the Dhordo tent city runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, with full-moon nights on 21–23 January. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival follows Magha Purnima and is expected on 18–20 February 2027, so it is not in January; confirm with Rajasthan Tourism before booking around it.
