Short answer: Shimla in January is cold, quiet after New Year and the most likely month (with February) for snow. IMD-based normals give about 9°C days, 2°C nights and roughly 42 cm of snow over four snowy days. Snow comes in short spells, so plan three or four nights with one flexible day, and use Kufri and Narkanda for snow play when the town itself is clear.

What is the weather like in Shimla in January?

January is Shimla’s coldest month. The 1991–2020 normals quoted from the India Meteorological Department give a mean maximum of 9.3°C and a mean minimum of 1.7°C, with about 80 mm of precipitation on four or five wet days. Clear days are bright and pleasant in the sun on the Ridge; the cold bites as soon as the sun drops behind the hills at about 5:30 pm. After a snow spell, nights fall below zero, and the shaded lanes below Mall Road stay icy until late morning.

Here is how January compares with the months either side. The figures are long-term averages, not a forecast for 2027.

Month Day / night (°C) Rain + snow (mm) Average snowfall Snowy days Record low
December 11.9 / 4.0 26 7 cm 1.3 −12.2°C
January 9.3 / 1.7 80 42 cm 4.2 −10.6°C
February 10.3 / 2.4 83 43 cm 4.2 −8.5°C

The practical reading: December is mostly dry and only occasionally snowy, while January and February carry most of the winter’s snow. If snow is the whole point of your trip, January or early February beats Christmas week. Our Shimla in December guide covers the festive weeks if you are deciding between the two.

Will it snow in Shimla in January 2027?

Nobody can promise that in October. Snow in Shimla arrives with western disturbances, weather systems from the west that bring two or three days of cloud and precipitation, then clear skies. A good January has two or three such spells; a dry one has none in town, only on the higher ridges. Recent first-snow dates show how much this varies:

  • Winter 2024–25: first snow on the evening of 8 December 2024, about 2.5 cm in Shimla, with Kufri, Fagu and Narkanda also white (PTI via National Herald, 9 December 2024).
  • Winter 2022–23: no snow in town until 13 January 2023, when Kufri and Narkanda got 1–2 inches and Shimla itself only rain (The Tribune, 13 January 2023).
  • Winter 2025–26: after a three-month dry spell, the season’s first snow fell on Friday 23 January 2026; Shimla recorded about 10 cm and NH-5 was closed near Kufri (ETV Bharat, News Arena and UNI, 23 January 2026).

So the honest plan is: book January, keep a day free, and watch the IMD Shimla forecast in the last week before you travel. When a western disturbance is due, the snow points fill up fast, so a hotel close to the Ridge and a driver who knows when to turn back are worth more than any promise of snow. For the wider winter picture across Himachal, see our Himachal snowfall outlook for 2026–27.

Where can you see snow near Shimla in January?

Even when the Ridge is dry, the higher ground east of town often holds snow through January. These are the places we send January guests, in order of distance:

  • Kufri (about 16 km): the closest snow point, on the old Hindustan–Tibet road past Dhalli. Horse rides, snow slopes and a small winter fun park run when there is cover. See our Kufri snow activities page.
  • Fagu and Theog: quieter fields and apple orchards just beyond Kufri, good for families who want snow without the Kufri crowd.
  • Narkanda (about 65 km): higher and colder, with a beginners’ ski slope and views of the snow ranges from Hatu Peak. Our Narkanda snow and skiing page explains lessons and timing. The Hatu road itself is often shut after heavy snow.
  • Chail and Mashobra: forested, lower and calmer; snow here is a bonus rather than a sure thing.

One rule for all of them: after fresh snow, the road beyond Dhalli can close for hours or a full day, and even when open it is icy. Leave by 9 am, return before dark, and do not push on in a car without good tyres or chains.

What is there to do in Shimla in January?

  • Ice skating: the Shimla Ice Skating Club’s natural open-air rink below the Ridge has run since 1920. It opened its 2025–26 season on 4 December 2025, with morning sessions from about 8 am (The Week/PTI, 3 December 2025). January’s cold nights usually give the most sessions. Our ice skating in Shimla page explains entry and skate hire.
  • The Ridge, Mall Road and Christ Church: best in the late morning sun. After snow, the Ridge turns into the town’s photo spot.
  • Jakhoo Temple: the steep walk is slippery after snow; take the ropeway or a taxi up.
  • Viceregal Lodge (Indian Institute of Advanced Study): a good half-day on a clear afternoon; check timings at the gate as they can change in winter.
  • Festivals: Lohri (13 January) brings bonfires in Punjabi and Himachali homes; the Ridge winter carnival, held over the Christmas–New Year weeks in recent years (in 2023 it ran from 25 December to 5 January, The Tribune), may spill into the first days of January.

How crowded and expensive is Shimla in January?

January has two very different halves. New Year falls on a Friday in 2027, so 1–3 January is a long weekend, and Shimla is full until about 5 January. Traffic queues between Shoghi and the town, and parking near the Mall fills by mid-morning. From about 6 January the town empties, hotels discount and only snow forecasts bring short weekend rushes. Republic Day is on Tuesday 26 January 2027, so expect a second busy spell from Saturday 23 January for anyone who takes Monday off.

On our own packages the pricing follows the same pattern: 20 December–5 January is the peak band, and 6 January–14 March returns to the off-season rate. As listed on the live package pages on 27 October 2026, our Shimla Manali tour from Chandigarh (5N/6D) starts from ₹12,499 per person and the Shimla Manali tour package from Delhi (5N/6D) from ₹14,999 per person (3-star, twin sharing). For a Shimla-only break, the Chandigarh–Shimla 3N/4D tour with Kufri is quoted to your dates.

How do you get to Shimla in January?

  • By road from Chandigarh: about 115 km up NH-5 via Parwanoo, Dharampur and Solan, normally 3.5–4 hours. The highway to Shimla itself rarely closes for long; the trouble spots are beyond Dhalli. Our Chandigarh to Shimla taxi page has the details.
  • By toy train: as of mid-October 2026, Northern Railway had cancelled Kalka–Dharampur trains until 30 November 2026 for repairs, with one train each way between Dharampur and Shimla. Read our toy train status update and check NTES or 139 before booking January dates.
  • By air: Chandigarh airport is the dependable option in winter. Fog in Delhi and Chandigarh can delay early-morning flights in late December and January, so avoid tight connections.

What should you pack for Shimla in January?

  • Thermal top and bottoms, a fleece and a down or heavy wool jacket.
  • Gloves, a woollen cap, a scarf and two pairs of thick socks.
  • Waterproof shoes or boots with a deep grip; normal trainers slip on packed snow.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: the January sun on snow is strong.
  • A small power bank, because cold drains phone batteries and snow can cut power for a few hours.

A sample 4-day Shimla plan for January

Day Plan If it snows
1 Chandigarh to Shimla by road (3.5–4 h); evening on the Ridge and Mall Road Arrive by 3 pm; skip side trips
2 Kufri and Fagu snow play; back for ice skating if there is an evening session Wait for the road beyond Dhalli to clear; do Jakhoo and the rink instead
3 Narkanda day trip: ski lesson or snow walk, Hatu views if the road is open Swap with Day 4 and go once the road is cleared
4 Viceregal Lodge and Christ Church in the morning; drive down after lunch Leave early; allow extra time to Chandigarh

With more time, carry on to Manali, where January snow around Solang is more dependable; our Manali in January guide covers that side. Winter travellers who want the quieter Satluj valley can also look at our Kinnaur tour from Shimla, where the road usually stays open through winter but needs a careful driver.

What this means for your trip

Choose January for snow, and choose the second or third week if you also want quiet hotels and off-season rates. Build one free day into the plan, stay close to the Ridge so you can walk when roads ice up, and let the snow forecast decide which day you go to Kufri or Narkanda. That is how we plan every January trip from our base in Himachal.

Frequently asked questions

Does it snow in Shimla in January?

Usually, yes, but not every week. IMD-based 1991–2020 normals give Shimla about 42 cm of snow over roughly four snowy days in January, the same as February and far more than December’s 7 cm. Snow comes in short spells with western disturbances. In 2026 the first snow of the season fell only on 23 January, so keep two or three flexible days.

How cold is Shimla in January?

January is Shimla’s coldest month. Normals are about 9°C by day and 2°C at night, and the record low is −10.6°C. After a snow spell, nights in Kufri and Narkanda drop well below freezing and pavements in town turn icy in the mornings. Pack thermals, a down or heavy wool jacket, gloves, a cap and shoes with a good grip.

Is January a good time to visit Shimla?

Yes, if you want snow and do not mind the cold. After the New Year rush ends on 5 January, hotels are quieter and our package rates return to the off-season band. The trade-offs are short days, icy roads after snowfall and a chance of road closures beyond Dhalli towards Kufri and Narkanda.

Are Kufri and Narkanda open in January?

They stay open as places, but the road can close for hours or a day after heavy snow. On 23 January 2026, UNI reported the old Hindustan–Tibet road (NH-5) closed near Kufri because of snow. Once the road is cleared, Kufri and Narkanda give the best snow play near Shimla, and Narkanda has a beginners’ ski slope when cover is good.

Is the Shimla ice skating rink open in January?

January is normally its best month. The natural open-air rink of the Shimla Ice Skating Club, running since 1920, opened its 2025–26 season on 4 December 2025, and morning sessions start around 8 am. Sessions only happen when the night is cold and clear enough to freeze the ice, so check at the rink the evening before.

Can I take the toy train to Shimla in January?

Check before you book. As of mid-October 2026, Kalka–Dharampur trains were cancelled until 30 November 2026 for track repairs, with one train each way between Dharampur and Shimla. No restart date had been announced. Treat the train as a bonus and keep a road transfer ready.

How many days do I need in Shimla in January?

Three nights is the sweet spot: one day for the Ridge, Mall Road and Jakhoo, one for Kufri or Narkanda depending on snow, and one spare day in case the road is shut. With five or six nights, combine Shimla with Manali, where January snow at Solang is more reliable.

Want Shimla in January planned around the snow forecast?

Tell us your dates and we will send a day-by-day Shimla plan with a snow back-up, a 4×4-ready cab if needed and hotels near the Ridge.
