Snow in Dharamshala: look up, then go up.
The snow-capped Dhauladhar stands right behind Dharamshala all winter, but the town itself sees snow only now and then. Here is where the snow actually is, when it usually comes, and how to plan a snow day from McLeod Ganj.

Dharamshala town rarely gets snow, but McLeod Ganj, Naddi and Dharamkot (about 2,000–2,200 m) can get it in January and February, and the Triund ridge (about 2,850 m) is often white from December. The Dhauladhar peaks right behind the town stay snow-capped for most of the winter, so you will see snow from almost anywhere. Last winter, Triund got fresh snow on 23 January 2026 while McLeod Ganj, Naddi and Bhagsunag dropped to near freezing. For a snow day, stay in McLeod Ganj and go higher — Triund, or the snowline above it — when the weather allows.
- Snow in the town?Rare in lower Dharamshala; occasional in McLeod Ganj, Naddi and Dharamkot.
- Best monthsJanuary and February; late December in a cold year.
- Surest snow nearbyTriund ridge and the snowline above it, when trails are open.
- Snow viewsThe Dhauladhar is snow-capped most of the winter.
- Getting thereKangra (Gaggal) airport is about 15 km from Dharamshala.
Does it snow in Dharamshala?
Dharamshala climbs a steep slope: the lower town sits around 1,450 m, McLeod Ganj above it at about 2,080 m, and Naddi and Dharamkot a little higher still. Directly behind them, the Dhauladhar range rises to over 4,000 m. That height difference is the whole story of snow here.
When a strong western disturbance crosses Himachal in winter, the Dhauladhar and the Triund ridge get snow first. Only the colder spells push the snow line down to McLeod Ganj, Naddi and Dharamkot — usually in January or February, and not every year. The lower town mostly gets cold rain.
Last winter is a good example. On 23 January 2026, the Triund trekking site received fresh snow, while McLeod Ganj, Naddi, Dharamkot and Bhagsunag dropped to near-freezing temperatures. That same spell brought the season’s first snow to Shimla and to Mussoorie in Uttarakhand.

Visiting Dharamshala in snow season
Getting there: Kangra (Gaggal) airport is about 15 km from Dharamshala; Pathankot is the nearest big railway station, about 90 km away. A Delhi to Dharamshala taxi takes most of a day.
Roads: the road up to McLeod Ganj and Naddi is steep and can ice over after snow — travel up in daylight with a hill driver, and expect short closures after a heavy spell.
Treks in snow: Triund and the trails above it change completely in snow, and local authorities sometimes restrict high treks in bad weather. Go with a local guide, start early, and turn back if the weather turns. We check current conditions the evening before.
Clothes: warm layers, a down or padded jacket, gloves, a cap and shoes with grip. Evenings in McLeod Ganj are freezing in January.
