Short answer: The best places to visit in Rajasthan in December are Jaisalmer (desert camps, clear starry nights), Udaipur (lakes and palaces in mild sun), Jaipur and Jodhpur (forts without the heat), Ranthambore (tiger safaris in crisp mornings) and Mount Abu for the 29–31 December Winter Festival. Days run around 22–27°C, nights 7–12°C, colder on the dunes and in Mount Abu.
Quick answer: Rajasthan in December 2026
- Weather: dry and sunny; afternoons about 22–27°C in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur, nights about 7–12°C (Outlook India, citing IMD, 3 December 2025).
- Top 5 places: Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ranthambore. Add Mount Abu only if you want real cold.

December is the month Rajasthan was built for. The summer heat that keeps people away from April to June is long gone, the monsoon haze has cleared, and the light on the sandstone forts is sharp from morning to sunset. It is also the month when the state is busiest with Indian families, honeymooners and foreign visitors, so the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one is mostly about timing and booking order. This guide lists where to go, what the weather actually does, and how to avoid the two problems that catch most people: the Christmas price jump and the fog on the way in.
What is the weather like in Rajasthan in December?
December is dry across the state, with sunny days, almost no rain and nights that get properly cold. Long-term IMD normals give Jaipur an average December high of about 25°C and a low of about 9°C. In early December 2025, Outlook India, citing IMD guidance, put afternoons in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur at 22–27°C and night minimums at 7–12°C, with 4–5°C possible in some northern districts and more cold-wave days than usual.
| Place | December days | December nights | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jaipur | about 25°C | about 9°C | Amer Fort, City Palace, bazaars, first stop from Delhi |
| Udaipur | 22–27°C | 7–12°C | Lake Pichola, City Palace, couples, slow travel |
| Jodhpur | 22–27°C | 7–12°C | Mehrangarh, the blue old city, step-wells |
| Jaisalmer | 24–26°C | 8–11°C in town, colder on the dunes | Living fort, Sam and Khuri dunes, desert camps |
| Mount Abu | noticeably cooler than the plains | can drop to 1°C or below | Nakki Lake, Dilwara temples, Winter Festival |
Figures are typical ranges, not a forecast. Mount Abu is the outlier: it sits at about 1,200 m in the Aravallis and is the only place in Rajasthan where frost is normal. PTI reported minus 1°C there for three days running up to 19 December 2023, and ETV Bharat reported 1°C with dew freezing on the grass on the night of 28 December 2025.
Which are the best places to visit in Rajasthan in December?
1. Jaisalmer: the desert at its best
December is Jaisalmer’s most comfortable month, with sunny days in the mid-20s and cold, clear nights that make the dune camps at Sam and Khuri worth the drive. The fort is still lived in, the havelis are easy to walk in the cool afternoon, and the sunset camel ride is no longer an exercise in heat management. Note that since 13 October 2026 the Sam and Kanoi dunes close to tourists at sunset, so camel and jeep rides end at dusk and the evening programme happens inside the camp. Book the camp before you book anything else for Christmas week, and read our Jaisalmer in December guide for camp types and what changed this season.
2. Udaipur: lakes, palaces and soft winter light
Udaipur is the gentlest stop in a December itinerary. Afternoons on Lake Pichola are warm enough for the boat to Jag Mandir, and evenings are cool enough for a rooftop dinner with a shawl. Plan two full days for the City Palace, the Jagdish temple, Saheliyon ki Bari and the Dharohar folk show, plus a day trip to Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur. Our 3-day Udaipur plan sets out the order that avoids the midday crowds.
3. Jaipur: forts without the heat
Jaipur is about 280 km from Delhi, which makes it the natural first night. Amer Fort, Nahargarh at sunset, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal can all be done in comfort in December, and the old-city bazaars are pleasant to walk after 10 am once the morning chill lifts. Start early at Amer: it is one of the busiest monuments in the state in December.
4. Jodhpur: Mehrangarh and the blue city
Mehrangarh is one of the finest forts in India, and in December you can walk its ramparts at noon without regretting it. Add the Jaswant Thada, the old-city lanes around the clock tower and Toorji ka Jhalra step-well. Jodhpur also sits neatly between Jaipur and Jaisalmer, so it works as a one-night or two-night break on the drive west.
5. Ranthambore: tigers in crisp mornings
Ranthambore is open from 1 October to 30 June, and December is one of the most comfortable months to be in an open gypsy or canter. Expect safari slots of roughly 7:00 to 10:30 am and 2:00 to 5:30 pm in December, and dress for single-digit temperatures at the start of the morning drive. Safari seats sell out for Christmas week, so book them as soon as your dates are fixed.
6. Mount Abu: only if you want real cold
Mount Abu is Rajasthan’s only hill station, and in December it feels like one. The Dilwara Jain temples, Nakki Lake and the sunset from Guru Shikhar are the draws. The Mount Abu Winter Festival is listed by Incredible India for 29 to 31 December 2026 at the Polo Ground and Nakki Lake, with Gair, Ghoomar and Daph folk dances and a craft fair alongside New Year celebrations. See our list of Mount Abu tourist places before you add it.
What festivals and events are on in Rajasthan in December 2026?
- Kumbhalgarh Festival (expected 1–3 December 2026): folk music, Kalbeliya and Ghoomar dance and a light show inside Kumbhalgarh Fort. Dates are listed as expected, so confirm with Rajasthan Tourism before you build a trip around it.
- Mount Abu Winter Festival (29–31 December 2026): three days of folk performances and crafts at the Polo Ground and around Nakki Lake.
- Christmas and New Year: Udaipur’s lake hotels, Jaisalmer’s desert camps and the heritage hotels in Jaipur run gala dinners and cultural evenings, almost always at a fixed supplement on the room rate.
If you are travelling later in winter, the Jaisalmer Desert Festival is in February; our best time to visit Rajasthan guide has every month and festival in one table.
Is December too crowded or too expensive for Rajasthan?
The first two weeks of December are some of the best value of the whole winter: the weather is already perfect and the school holidays have not started. From about 20 December to 5 January the picture changes. In 2026 both Christmas (Friday 25 December) and New Year’s Day (Friday 1 January 2027) fall on a Friday, creating two back-to-back long weekends, and room rates in Udaipur, Jaisalmer and Jaipur rise sharply while minimum-stay rules appear. Our Rajasthan trip cost guide shows how budgets change by season.
Three practical rules for the peak fortnight: book the desert camp and the Udaipur hotel first, because they run out before anything else; avoid arriving on 24 or 31 December, when every road into Udaipur and Jaisalmer is busy; and check whether the New Year gala dinner is compulsory before you pay a deposit.
How does fog affect a December trip to Rajasthan?
Rajasthan itself is mostly clear in December, but the approach from Delhi is not. From late December into January, dense fog settles over the Indo-Gangetic plains and the Delhi side, and in late December 2025 ETV Bharat reported visibility cut to 10–15 metres in parts of the state, with IMD expecting dense fog into the first week of January. Overnight trains from the east and north run late, and early-morning flights out of Delhi are often held.
The fix is simple: take daytime trains or drive Delhi to Jaipur after 9 am, do not plan a same-day connection off an overnight train, and keep the first afternoon free. A private car with a driver who knows the expressway is the most reliable option in fog season; see our Rajasthan tour packages from Delhi for route options.
What is a good 7-day Rajasthan itinerary for December?
| Day | Route | December tip |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Delhi to Jaipur (about 280 km) | Leave after the fog lifts; Nahargarh at sunset |
| 2 | Jaipur sightseeing | Amer Fort at opening, City Palace after lunch |
| 3 | Jaipur to Jodhpur | Mehrangarh in the late afternoon light |
| 4 | Jodhpur to Jaisalmer | Straight to the dune camp; jacket for the night |
| 5 | Jaisalmer fort and havelis | Walk the fort at 10 am when it warms up |
| 6 | Long drive or flight to Udaipur | Break at Jodhpur if you are not in a hurry |
| 7 | Udaipur lakes and palace | Sunset boat on Pichola, then fly or train out |
With five days, pick two cities: Jaipur and Udaipur for couples, Jaipur and Jaisalmer for desert lovers. With nine or ten, add Ranthambore after Jaipur or Mount Abu after Udaipur. Ready-made versions of these routes include our Royal Rajasthan Tour (4N/5D), the Padharo Rajasthan Tour (5N/6D) and the Royal Udaipur and Mount Abu Tour (4N/5D), all priced on request for your dates.
What should you pack for Rajasthan in December?
- Layers, not one heavy coat: a T-shirt for the afternoon, a fleece or sweater for the evening and a proper jacket for desert nights and early safaris.
- Warm extras for Jaisalmer, Ranthambore and Mount Abu: a cap, gloves and socks; open safari vehicles are cold at 7 am.
- Sun protection: sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat, because the winter sun on sandstone is strong.
- Comfortable shoes: forts mean ramps, steps and uneven stone; temples ask you to remove shoes, so carry socks.
- Moisturiser and lip balm: the air is very dry.
What this means for your December trip
If your dates are flexible, go between 1 and 19 December: the weather is the same as Christmas week and the rooms are easier to find. If you can only travel in the holidays, fix the desert camp and the Udaipur hotel now, build in a fog buffer on the Delhi end, and keep Mount Abu for travellers who actually want the cold. Rajasthan in December rarely disappoints; the trips that go wrong are almost always the ones that were booked late.
Frequently asked questions
Is December a good time to visit Rajasthan?
Yes. December is one of the best months: dry, sunny days of about 22–27°C and cool nights of 7–12°C in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. The only drawbacks are higher prices from about 20 December to 5 January and morning fog on the Delhi side late in the month.
Which is the best place to visit in Rajasthan in December?
Jaisalmer is the standout, because December brings comfortable days and clear, cold nights for the desert camps. Udaipur is the best choice for couples and slow travel. Jaipur and Jodhpur are easy add-ons, and Ranthambore suits wildlife lovers.
How cold is Rajasthan in December?
Nights in the main cities are usually 7–12°C, with 4–5°C possible in northern districts during a cold spell. The dunes near Jaisalmer feel colder than town. Mount Abu is the coldest place in the state and has recorded minus 1°C in December, so pack a proper jacket there.
Is it too crowded to visit Rajasthan at Christmas and New Year?
It is busy, not impossible. In 2026 Christmas and New Year both fall on a Friday, so expect full hotels from about 20 December to 5 January. Book desert camps and Udaipur hotels first, avoid arriving on 24 or 31 December, and check for compulsory gala dinners.
Is Ranthambore open in December?
Yes. Ranthambore is open from 1 October to 30 June, and December safaris run in a morning and an afternoon slot, roughly 7:00 to 10:30 am and 2:00 to 5:30 pm. Mornings are cold in open vehicles, and seats sell out over Christmas week.
When is the Mount Abu Winter Festival in 2026?
The Mount Abu Winter Festival is listed by Incredible India for 29 to 31 December 2026 at the Polo Ground and Nakki Lake. It features Gair, Ghoomar and Daph folk dances and a crafts fair alongside New Year celebrations. Confirm the programme with the Tourist Reception Centre, Mount Abu, before travelling.
How many days do I need for Rajasthan in December?
Five days covers two cities, such as Jaipur and Udaipur. Seven to eight days covers the classic loop of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur. Add two days for Ranthambore or Mount Abu, and keep half a day spare on the Delhi end for fog delays.
