Short answer: India in January is peak season almost everywhere except the high Himalaya. Rajasthan, the Golden Triangle, Goa, Kerala and the south are dry and comfortable; Delhi and the northern plains are cold and foggy in the mornings; Shimla, Manali and Gulmarg have snow. The month also carries two of the country’s big set-piece events, Makar Sankranti and Pongal on 14 January and Republic Day on 26 January, plus the Jaipur Literature Festival and the start of the Haridwar Ardh Kumbh in 2027.
Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)
- Weather: Delhi 7–20°C with morning fog; Jaipur and Jodhpur 8–24°C and sunny; Goa and Kerala 22–32°C and dry; Shimla and Manali around freezing with snow.
- Go to: Rajasthan, the Golden Triangle, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Kashmir for snow; the Himachal hill stations for a short snow stay.
- Avoid: Ladakh by road (closed), Spiti via Manali (closed), long drives at dawn on the fogbound plains.
- Dates: Makar Sankranti and Pongal 14 January 2027; Jaipur Literature Festival 14–18 January 2027; Haridwar Ardh Kumbh from 14 January 2027; Republic Day 26 January.
- Booking: the first week is still Christmas–New Year peak pricing; prices ease from about 6 January.
- Pack: layers for the north, a proper jacket for the hills, and light cotton for Goa and the south.

What is the weather like in India in January?
January is the coldest month of the year across the north and the driest almost everywhere. The figures below are typical ranges based on long-term averages and our own experience, not forecasts, and dollar figures use ₹95 to the US dollar (October 2026).
| Region | Typical January range | Rain | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi, Agra, Varanasi | 7–20°C | Rare | Fog until 10:00 on many days; good sightseeing from late morning |
| Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur | 8–24°C | Rare | Sunny days, cold desert nights; ideal for forts and camps |
| Amritsar, Chandigarh | 5–18°C | Occasional | Densest fog in the country; keep flexible travel days |
| Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala | −3 to 10°C | Snow in spells | Snow stays; roads close briefly after heavy falls |
| Srinagar, Gulmarg | −8 to 6°C | Snow | Ski season; Dal Lake can partly freeze |
| Mumbai, Goa | 20–32°C | None | Best beach weather of the year; busy |
| Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka | 20–32°C | Little | Dry and warm; cool nights in Munnar and Ooty |
| Leh (Ladakh) | −15 to 0°C | Dry | Fly in only; for experienced winter travellers |
The fog is the practical issue. From late December to mid-January, dense fog across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh delays early trains and morning flights, sometimes by hours. Our rule: no international connection on the same day as a domestic flight out of Delhi, Amritsar or Varanasi, and no sightseeing departure before 09:00. Our India in December guide covers how the fog season builds; by late January it is mostly gone.
Where should you go in India in January?
Rajasthan. This is Rajasthan’s month. Jaisalmer’s desert camps are cold at night and perfect by day, Jodhpur and Udaipur are sunny, and the Rajasthan tour circuit runs without a weather worry. Carry a warm layer for camel rides at dusk.
The Golden Triangle. Fine, with the fog caveat. The Taj Mahal at sunrise can be hidden until mid-morning in the first half of the month; we often swap it to a late-morning visit and keep the sunset view from Mehtab Bagh. Our 10 day India itinerary explains how the Agra night fits.
Goa and Kerala. January is dry, warm and busy. Hotel prices stay high until about the second week and then ease. Our Goa holiday guide and Kerala tour pages cover both; if you want the backwaters and beaches without the Christmas crowds, aim for 10–31 January.
Snow in Himachal. Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie usually have settled snow by January. The Atal Tunnel keeps Sissu reachable from Manali, and Solang and Narkanda have ski runs. Our guides to Manali in January and Shimla in January go into roads, heating and what to wear. Rohtang Pass is closed all winter.
Kashmir. Gulmarg is the main ski resort in India, and January is its best snow month; Srinagar is cold, quiet and atmospheric. See Kashmir in January.
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Pongal makes mid-January a lively time for Madurai, Thanjavur and the temple towns, and Mysore and Hampi are at their coolest. For Indian travellers we keep a separate list of places to visit in January.
What is on in India in January 2027?
| Event | Date (2027) | Where | Source / status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Makar Sankranti and Pongal | Thursday 14 January | Kites in Jaipur and Gujarat; harvest festival across Tamil Nadu | Drik Panchang 2027 calendar, checked 30 Oct 2026 |
| Jaipur Literature Festival | 14–18 January | Hotel Clarks Amer, Jaipur | Announced; NewsBytes, checked 30 Oct 2026 |
| Haridwar Ardh Kumbh begins | 14 January (runs to 20 April) | Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar | Main bathing days in March and April |
| International Kite Festival | Usually the week to 14 January | Ahmedabad riverfront | 2027 dates not yet published; check Gujarat Tourism |
| Bikaner Camel Festival | Usually mid-January | Bikaner, Rajasthan | 2027 dates not yet published; check Rajasthan Tourism |
| Republic Day parade | Tuesday 26 January | Kartavya Path, New Delhi | Fixed national holiday; Beating Retreat on 29 January |
| Rann Utsav | Season to 7 March 2027 | Dhordo tent city, Kutch, Gujarat | goasia news report, checked 30 Oct 2026; confirm on the official site |
Republic Day is worth planning around if you are in Delhi: the parade of military bands, state floats and flypasts runs down Kartavya Path from about 10:00, and tickets are sold in advance through the government portal in the weeks before. Security is tight for several days, central Delhi roads close on the morning, and monuments near the route may shut. The Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk on 29 January is the quieter, more musical end of the week.
Pongal in Tamil Nadu runs over four days from 14 January 2027, with decorated cattle, kolam patterns on doorsteps and sweet rice cooked outdoors. Madurai is a good base. Makar Sankranti on the same day is kite day in Jaipur, where rooftops fill from dawn.
The Haridwar Ardh Kumbh opens on 14 January 2027, and while the largest bathing days fall in March and April, January brings the ash-smeared akharas into town and the Ganges ghats into festival mode. Our Kumbh Mela tour page explains how foreign visitors can attend safely.
What should you avoid in India in January?
- Ladakh by road and Spiti via Manali. The Manali–Leh highway and the Manali–Kaza road have been closed since 15 October 2026 and will not reopen until late spring. Spiti is reachable only via Shimla and Kinnaur, as a winter expedition, not a sightseeing trip.
- Same-day connections across the fog belt. A 07:00 Delhi–Varanasi flight on a foggy day can leave at noon. Keep a night in Delhi before any international departure.
- The first week if you are price-sensitive. Christmas–New Year peak rates generally run to about 5 January in Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan and Himachal; our own Himachal packages are about 25% higher from 20 December to 5 January than in the off-season band that resumes on 6 January.
- Under-packing for the north. Visitors from Europe assume India is hot. Delhi at dawn in January is 5–7°C, Jaisalmer at night similar, and Manali is below zero. Our India packing list has a winter section.
How do you plan a January trip around the fog and the festivals?
A sample two-week plan that we would be happy to run in January: arrive Delhi (2 nights, sightseeing from 10:00), drive to Agra (1 night, Taj late morning and at sunset), drive to Jaipur in time for the Literature Festival or Makar Sankranti kites (3 nights), on to Jodhpur (2 nights) and Udaipur (2 nights), then fly to Goa or Kerala for a final 3–4 nights of warmth before flying out of Mumbai or Kochi. That order moves you south as the month goes on, away from the fog.
If you want snow instead of beaches, replace the southern leg with Chandigarh–Shimla–Manali (5 nights), remembering that the Kalka–Shimla toy train is only running between Dharampur and Shimla while the Kalka section is closed until 30 November 2026, and that heavy snow can hold you in Manali for a day. For what February adds, see our India in February guide; for the regional picture across the year, our best time to visit north India guide has a month-by-region table.
Frequently asked questions
Is January a good time to visit India?
Yes, for most of the country. It is dry and comfortable in Rajasthan, the Golden Triangle, Goa, Kerala and the south, and snowy in the Himalayan hill stations. The drawbacks are morning fog on the northern plains in the first half of the month, peak prices in the first week, and closed roads to Ladakh and Spiti.
How cold is Delhi in January?
Typically 5–8°C at dawn and 18–21°C by mid-afternoon, with fog on many mornings in the first half of the month. Hotels and cars are heated or air-conditioned, but monuments and streets are not, so bring a jacket, a scarf and closed shoes. By the last week of January the fog usually eases and days feel like a mild spring.
Where can I see snow in India in January?
Shimla, Manali, Dalhousie and the upper villages above Dharamshala in Himachal, Mussoorie and Auli in Uttarakhand, and Gulmarg and Srinagar in Kashmir. Manali is the easiest for a short snow trip, with Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel to Sissu reachable even when Rohtang Pass is closed for the winter.
What festivals are in India in January 2027?
Makar Sankranti and Pongal on 14 January, with kites in Jaipur and Gujarat and harvest celebrations in Tamil Nadu; the Jaipur Literature Festival from 14 to 18 January; the opening of the Haridwar Ardh Kumbh on 14 January; and Republic Day on 26 January with the parade in New Delhi. The Bikaner camel and Ahmedabad kite festivals are usually in mid-January too.
Can I visit the Taj Mahal in January?
Yes. The Taj Mahal is open every day except Friday, from 30 minutes before sunrise. In early January the sunrise view is often lost to fog until 09:00 or 10:00, so plan a late-morning visit with a sunset view from Mehtab Bagh as well. The foreigner ticket is ₹1,100 plus ₹200 for the mausoleum, about US$14.
Is Goa busy in January?
Very busy in the first week, when Christmas and New Year visitors are still there and prices are at their highest, then steadily calmer from the second week. The weather is the best of the year: dry, 20–32°C, calm sea. For quieter beaches, choose south Goa or travel after 10 January.
