Tiger Safari India
Where to see a wild tiger — honestly.
India holds more than 70% of the world’s wild tigers, and several of its reserves are easy to add to a first trip. Here is how the main parks compare, when they are open, how to book safari permits without paying a look-alike website, and how a safari fits the Golden Triangle. Written by a travel company based in the Himalaya.
- 3,682 tigers — 2022 estimate
- Oct–Jun main safari season
- 2–3 nights at one park
- Checked 21 Oct 2026
Where is the best place for a tiger safari in India?
For a first trip, Ranthambore in Rajasthan fits easily into a Golden Triangle tour, and Corbett, India’s first national park, is a drive from Delhi. Kanha and Bandhavgarh in Central India suit a longer wildlife trip. Most core zones open from about October to June and close for the monsoon. Book permits only on official forest-department portals; sightings are never guaranteed. We plan the whole trip.
The main tiger parks compared
India has 54 tiger reserves. These four are the ones international travellers ask us about most — choose by how much time you have and where else you are going.
| Park | Why go | Main season (official) | Fits with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranthambore, Rajasthan | Dry forest, lakes and a UNESCO-listed hill fort inside the reserve; Rajasthan Tourism calls it one of the biggest tiger reserves | Reopens in October after the monsoon (1 October in recent seasons) — confirm for your dates | Golden Triangle: between Agra and Jaipur by car |
| Corbett, Uttarakhand | India’s first national park (1936): forest, grassland and river, with wild elephants, tigers and 580+ bird species | Bijrani 15 Oct–30 Jun · Dhikala 15 Nov–15 Jun · Jhirna and Dhela all year | Delhi: about 240 km (150 mi) to Ramnagar; the Himalaya beyond |
| Kanha, Madhya Pradesh | Open meadows and tall sal forest; home of the barasingha (swamp deer) | October to June; core zones closed July–September | A longer Central India wildlife trip, by flight |
| Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh | MP Tourism says it offers one of the highest chances of spotting a tiger, thanks to its tiger density | October to June; core zones closed July–September | Often paired with Kanha |

When to go on a tiger safari
The short answer: October to June, when the core zones of most reserves are open.
October to February — the cool season
Parks reopen after the monsoon in October: Ranthambore on 1 October in recent seasons, Corbett’s Bijrani on 15 October and the Central India core zones during October (dates are announced each year). Corbett’s Dhikala zone opens on 15 November. This is also the best time for the rest of North India, so a safari fits easily into a wider trip.
March to June — the hot season
The parks stay open until about 30 June (Dhikala until 15 June). Days are hot, so drives are early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Ask us what to expect for your dates.
July to September — the monsoon
The core zones of Madhya Pradesh’s tiger reserves close for the breeding season; buffer-zone safaris stay open. In Corbett only Jhirna and Dhela stay open through the year. We plan the Himalaya or other regions for these months instead.
How to book safari permits safely
Safari permits are sold only through the state forest departments’ official portals; many look-alike ‘safari booking’ websites resell them at a mark-up. Here is how it works:
- Choose the park, zone and number of drivesEach reserve allows a limited number of vehicles per drive, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Popular zones sell out early in winter, so decide your dates first.
- Book only on the official portalRanthambore: Rajasthan Forest Department (fmdss.forest.rajasthan.gov.in). Corbett: corbettonline.uk.gov.in. Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench: forest.mponline.gov.in. Foreign nationals pay a higher fee than Indian citizens and book with their passport details.
- Know the rules before you payIn Corbett, permits are issued for at most three days and are non-transferable and non-refundable once issued; private vehicles are not allowed — you ride in a registered safari vehicle with up to six guests.
- Or let us do itWe book your permits on the official portals as part of your trip, with the car, hotels and transfers, and send you the permit documents. Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.
Will I see a tiger? An honest answer
Tiger sightings are never guaranteed — the forest is wild, and anyone who promises a tiger is guessing.
Plan more than one drive
In our planning experience, two or three nights at one park (four to six drives) gives you a fair chance and time to enjoy the rest of the forest. One drive on a day trip is a gamble.
The forest is more than the tiger
Corbett has wild elephants and 580+ bird species; Ranthambore has sambar at its lakes and a UNESCO-listed fort in the middle of the forest; Kanha has the rare barasingha. A good drive without a tiger is still a good drive.
Mornings and evenings
Animals move most in the cooler hours, which is why both daily drives start early and end before sunset. No one may enter the reserves after sunset.
How to add a tiger safari to your India trip
A safari works best as two or three nights inside a longer trip, not as a day trip.
- Golden Triangle + RanthamboreDelhi and Agra, then two nights at Ranthambore by private car, then Jaipur. See our Golden Triangle tour and the Taj Mahal from Delhi.
- Delhi + Corbett + the HimalayaCorbett is about 240 km (150 mi) from Delhi, so it fits before or after the Taj Mahal, or on the way to the hills. Our two-week India itinerary shows how the north fits together.
- Central India by flightKanha and Bandhavgarh are deep in Madhya Pradesh. We arrange them with local teams as a dedicated wildlife leg of 5–6 days.
Rules inside the reserve
Stay in the vehicle, keep your voice low, never feed the animals and don’t play music — the Corbett forest department lists getting out of vehicles, loud music and feeding wildlife as strictly prohibited, and the same rules apply in every reserve. Your naturalist and driver decide how close to go.
Practical basics
Visa
Check whether your passport qualifies for India’s e-Visa and apply yourself only at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware look-alike sites that charge extra. We are not a visa agency; see our e-Visa guide.
Getting there
A private car with a driver takes you from Delhi, Agra or Jaipur to the park gate and on to your next stop. Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.
Health
For vaccinations and anti-malaria advice, consult your doctor; see CDC or NHS Fit for Travel.
What to bring
Your passport (checked at the gate against your permit), layers for cold winter mornings in an open vehicle, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars and neutral-coloured clothes.
Prices
Safaris are quoted on request — the park, zone, number of drives, lodge level and month change the total. You get a day-by-day plan with a US-dollar total and what it covers before you pay anything. The Golden Triangle, which many guests combine with Ranthambore, has published prices:
| Option | From | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Tiger safari — added to your India trip | on request | Safari permits booked on the official portal, park transfers, lodge and a car with driver |
| Golden Triangle — 4 days (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) | from US$299 | Per person, two sharing: private air-conditioned car and driver, hotels with breakfast, airport pick-up and drop, local guides at the main monuments |
| Golden Triangle — classic 6 days | from US$449 | Per person, two sharing: private air-conditioned car and driver, hotels with breakfast, airport pick-up and drop, local guides at the main monuments |
Prices are per person in US dollars, indicative for the season shown, and confirmed on your quote. Taxes included; international flights excluded.
Booking terms (20% deposit, 48-hour refund window) are stated once, under Plan it with a local.
Questions travellers ask
Which is the best national park to see tigers in India?
There is no single best park. Ranthambore is the easiest to add to a Golden Triangle trip, Corbett is closest to Delhi and the Himalaya, and Madhya Pradesh Tourism says Bandhavgarh offers one of the highest chances of spotting a tiger. Choose by your route and dates — we help you decide.
When is the best time for a tiger safari in India?
October to June, when the core zones are open. October to February is cooler and fits a wider North India trip; March to June is hot, with early-morning and late-afternoon drives. Most core zones close for the monsoon, July to September.
Is a tiger sighting guaranteed?
No. Tigers are wild animals and no one can promise a sighting. Two or three nights at one park, with four to six drives, gives you a fair chance — and the forests have elephants, deer, leopards and hundreds of bird species too.
How do I book a safari in Ranthambore or Corbett?
Only on the official portals: the Rajasthan Forest Department (fmdss.forest.rajasthan.gov.in) for Ranthambore and corbettonline.uk.gov.in for Corbett. Many look-alike websites resell permits at a mark-up. We can book them for you as part of your trip.
Can foreigners go on a tiger safari in India?
Yes. Foreign nationals book with their passport details and pay a higher fee than Indian citizens. Bring the same passport to the park gate.
Can I do Ranthambore as a day trip from Jaipur?
It is possible, but one drive is a gamble. We recommend at least two nights near the park, placed between Agra and Jaipur on a Golden Triangle route.
How far is Corbett from Delhi?
Ramnagar, the town at Corbett’s main gates, is about 240 km (150 mi) from Delhi by road, according to the Nainital district administration. Ramnagar also has a railway station.
