Short answer: Kainchi Dham is about 320–335 km from Delhi, and the easiest way to get there is the Kathgodam Shatabdi from New Delhi (06:20, reaching Kathgodam around 11:55) followed by a 43 km taxi ride up the hill via Bhimtal and Bhowali, which takes about 1.5–2 hours. By car it is an 8–9 hour drive through Moradabad, Rampur and Haldwani. Buses from Anand Vihar take 7–8 hours to Haldwani or Bhimtal. The best time to go is a weekday morning between March and mid-June or from late September to November, avoiding long weekends, festival weekends and the 15 June foundation day. The ashram is open from about 6 am to 7 pm, and entry is free.
That is the summary. The rest of this guide is the detail we give our own guests: which train to book, where to stay so you can reach the gate before the crowd, what changed at Kainchi in October 2026, and how to fit the darshan into a short Kumaon trip without spending the whole day in traffic.

Distances from the Kumaon Division’s official page: Kainchi Dham is 9 km from Bhowali, 17 km from Nainital, 43 km from Kathgodam railway station and 79 km from Pantnagar airport. The shrine sits right on the Bhowali–Almora road beside the small Shipra river, at the double hairpin bend that gave Kainchi (“scissors”) its name.
Delhi to Kainchi Dham by train
The railway ends at Kathgodam, and three daily trains from Delhi are the ones most travellers use. Timings below are from the current published schedules. Railways revise timetables, so check NTES or IRCTC before you book.
| Train | From | Departs | Reaches Kathgodam |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12040 Kathgodam Shatabdi | New Delhi (NDLS) | 06:20 | 11:55 |
| 15035 Uttaranchal Sampark Kranti | Old Delhi (DLI) | 16:00 | 22:45 |
| 15013 Ranikhet Express | Old Delhi (DLI) | 22:05 | 05:05 (next day) |
Which one should you take?
- The Shatabdi is the default for most families. You reach Kathgodam just before noon, drive up to Bhimtal or Bhowali for lunch, check in, and do darshan early the next morning. The return Shatabdi (12039) leaves Kathgodam at 15:20 and reaches New Delhi around 21:00, so a two-day trip works without a single night on the road.
- The overnight Ranikhet Express saves a hotel night. You arrive at 05:05 and can be at the Kainchi gate by about 7 am, before the morning convoy from Haldwani builds up. It is the best option if you want darshan on day one.
- The Sampark Kranti arrives late at night. Only take it if you have a room booked near Kathgodam or Haldwani and plan to go up the hill the next morning.
Some trains also stop at Haldwani, a few kilometres before Kathgodam. On busy weekends, getting off at Haldwani and taking a pre-booked taxi from there can save time.
Delhi to Kainchi Dham by road
The road route is Delhi → Ghaziabad → Hapur → Moradabad → Rampur → Rudrapur or Bilaspur → Haldwani → Kathgodam, then up the hill road through Bhimtal and Bhowali to Kainchi. The plains section is fast, and as far as Kathgodam it is the same road our Delhi to Nainital taxi takes. The last 40-odd kilometres from Kathgodam are a mountain road, and that is where the time goes.
- Leave Delhi by 4–5 am. You clear the Moradabad bypass before the trucks and reach the hill road before the mid-morning rush of taxis from Haldwani.
- Do not plan a same-day return. 650+ km in one day, half of it in the dark, is not safe, and a jam at Bhowali can wipe out your darshan window. Stay one night in Bhimtal, Bhowali or Nainital.
- Use a driver who knows the hills if you are not used to hairpin bends. The Kathgodam–Bhowali stretch is narrow in places and busy with buses heading to Almora.
Our outstation cabs from Delhi run this route in sedans, Innova Crysta and Tempo Travellers, with drivers who do the Kumaon hills regularly. For groups of six or more, a Tempo Traveller usually costs less per person than two cars.
Delhi to Kainchi Dham by bus
There is no reliable direct bus that drops you at the Kainchi gate from Delhi, so plan for one change.
- Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) buses leave Anand Vihar ISBT for Haldwani through the day and night. From Haldwani, local buses heading for Almora, Ranikhet or Bageshwar use the Bhowali–Kainchi road, and shared or private taxis also run up to Bhowali and Kainchi.
- Private operators, including FlixBus, run Anand Vihar to Bhimtal in about 7–7.5 hours. From Bhimtal, Kainchi is a short taxi ride via Bhowali.
- Book overnight buses on the operator’s own site or app, and check the drop point. “Nainital” on a ticket sometimes means Haldwani or Kathgodam.
Searches for “Delhi to Kainchi Dham bus” spike before every long weekend, and that is exactly when buses and the hill road are most crowded. If you can only travel on a weekend, the Ranikhet Express overnight train is usually a calmer way to arrive.
Best time to visit Kainchi Dham
Kainchi Dham is open all year. The real question is how to avoid the crowds, and the answer is about the day and the hour more than the month.
| Period | Weather and roads | Crowds | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|
| March – mid-June | Pleasant days, cool mornings, clear roads | High at weekends and in school holidays (May–June) | Good on weekdays |
| 13–16 June (foundation day, 15 June) | Warm | The biggest crowd of the year; private vehicles stopped at parking zones, shuttles only | Go only if the mela itself is the point |
| July – mid-September | Monsoon rain, landslide risk on hill roads | Lower | Possible, but keep a buffer day and check IMD alerts |
| Late September – November | Clear skies, crisp mornings, best views | Very high on long and festival weekends | Best on weekdays |
| December – February | Cold mornings, occasional frost; roads usually open | Busy over Christmas–New Year, quieter in January–February weekdays | Good for a quiet darshan if you pack warm |
Best day and time
Go on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, and be at the gate when it opens. According to Incredible India, the ashram is open from about 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. Hours can change on special days and for VIP visits (the ashram was closed for a morning in November 2025 for a presidential visit), so confirm locally the evening before. Most day-trippers from Haldwani and Nainital arrive between 9 am and 1 pm, so an early slot is far calmer.
Dates to avoid in the rest of 2026
- Navratri weekends (Navratri begins Sunday 11 October 2026)
- Dussehra, Tuesday 20 October, and the weekend around it
- Diwali, Sunday 8 November, and the days either side
- Christmas to New Year, when Nainital and Bhimtal hotels fill and the hill road backs up
What changed at Kainchi Dham in October 2026
Footfall has exploded. Around 24 lakh people visited in the first half of 2026 alone, and over the 2–4 October long weekend officials reported well over 35,000 a day, against a normal 20,000–25,000. In response, the Nainital administration has:
- Started weekend and festival shuttles. According to Pioneer Edge (9 October 2026), on weekends and busy festival days private vehicles may only go as far as parking at Bhimtal, Bhowali and Vikas Bhawan. From there you continue by local taxi, Roadways bus or KMVN bus. Until this year, the shuttle ran only during the June mela.
- Recommended mandatory registration, modelled on the Char Dham system and likely to start with weekends. As of 9 October 2026 this was still awaiting state government approval, and no official portal had been announced. We cover the details, and what is decided versus only proposed, in our Kainchi Dham registration update.
- Cracked down on overcharging. Hotels, homestays and shops must display rate lists, and 22 units were fined ₹10,000 each for running more rooms than registered. Book a registered property before you leave Delhi.
- Banned bathing in the Shipra river beside the ashram.
What this means in practice: on a weekend, add at least an hour for parking and the shuttle, and do not count on driving your own car to the gate. On weekdays, private vehicles can still usually reach the Kainchi parking.
A two-day Delhi–Kainchi Dham plan that works
Day 1: Delhi to Bhimtal or Bhowali
Take the 06:20 Shatabdi from New Delhi to Kathgodam (11:55). A pre-booked taxi takes you up to Bhimtal (about an hour) for lunch and check-in. Spend the afternoon at Bhimtal lake or drive the extra 30 minutes to Nainital for the evening. Go to bed early.
Day 2: Darshan and back to Delhi
Leave by 6 am. Bhimtal to Kainchi is about 45 minutes on an empty road. Have darshan, eat at the langar if it is serving, and stop in Bhowali for its fruit market on the way down. Be at Kathgodam by 2:30 pm for the 15:20 Shatabdi, which reaches New Delhi around 21:00.
With one more day, add Nainital or the orchards of Mukteshwar. With two or three, continue to Almora, Ranikhet or Jageshwar. Our 4-day Majestic Nainital tour keeps Bhowali and Kainchi within easy reach, and the wider Uttarakhand tour packages can be built around a weekday darshan slot.
Where to stay for an early darshan
- Bhowali (9 km): the closest base with a real choice of hotels and homestays. Best if early darshan is your only goal.
- Bhimtal (about 20 km): quieter than Nainital, on the road up from Kathgodam, with lakeside stays. A good family base.
- Nainital (17 km): the most hotels and things to do, but Mall Road traffic adds time in the morning. Best if Kainchi is one part of a Nainital holiday.
- Near Kainchi itself: a few small guesthouses and homestays line the road. Check reviews and make sure the place is registered, given the recent crackdown.
Practical tips at the ashram
- Entry is free. There is no ticket for darshan. Be wary of anyone selling “VIP darshan” or “registration” before an official portal exists.
- Dress modestly and expect to remove footwear before entering the temple area.
- Phones and cameras: photography has been restricted inside the premises, especially at busy times. Follow the signs and the volunteers.
- Carry cash in small notes for parking, offerings and roadside tea. Mobile signal near the ashram can be weak in heavy crowds.
- Elderly travellers: on shuttle days there is a walk from the drop point. Tell your driver in advance so they can find the closest permitted stop.
For travel agents and group organisers
Kainchi Dham is now one of the most requested add-ons in Kumaon, and weekend rules are changing week to week. If you are sending groups from Delhi, quote weekday darshan as the default, keep parking and shuttle time in the itinerary, and confirm the registration status a week before departure. Our Uttarakhand DMC desk handles vehicles, registered hotels in Bhimtal and Bhowali, and on-ground timing for B2B partners.
